SERVING THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY SINCE 1892 VOLUME XIV, NO. 51 WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 1982 BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA Three days later, it's 20-19 NCAA awards Big Game to Stanford
By BILL KUNS
Staff Writer The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has awarded last Saturday's Big Game to Stanford the Daily Californian was told late last night. The 85th Big Game originally a 25-20 Cal win, thus will go down in NCAA record books as a 20-19 victory for Stanford, who, like Cal will now finish their season at 6-5. In an unprecedented and sure-to-be-controversial decision, a special NCAA panel, invoking a rarely used amendment to its bylaws ruled yesterday that Dwight Warner, a Golden Bear freshman involved in the unbelievable five-lateral kickoff return at the end of regulation play at Memorial Stadium, was in fact downed by Stanford defenders at their 45 yard line as the clock ran out. The commission also found many other irregularities in the play, paralleling those announced by the Pacific-10 Conference yesterday. Although the PAC-l0 stated that the final score of the game would not be changed, the NCAA overruled the statement, handing the victory to Stanford. With four seconds left in the game, Stanford place-kicker Mark Harmon booted a 35-yard field goal to give the Cardinal a one-point edge, culminating a Cardinal comeback that saw it trailing 10-0 at the half.

LATINO 796.33209 LONGORIA "Athletes Remembered: Mexicano/Latino Professional Football Players, 1929-1970 is a decade by decade chronicle of the football heroes of the forties, fifties and sixties. In these pages we learn of the accolades of Eddie Saenz, Lupe Joe Arenas, Primo and Danny Villanueva, Joe Kapp, Tom Flores, George Mira and Manny Fernandez. The author has spared no research device to get this story of neglected Hispanic professional football players. Longoria has scoured media guides, books, game programs, press releases, television programs, newspaper articles, public records and magazine articles to gather the facts, statistics and accomplishments of the football Latinos. However, the personal revelations are taken from letters to, from and about these forgotten athletes. Longoria describes the tribulations suffered by Latino football players and dwells on them long enough to give the reader an indication of how each particular athlete turned these burning and hurtful episodes into the fuel of success. In addition, the personal interviews with some of the sports figures further personalize these Latino gladiators. ...This ambitious foray into the history of Hispanic athletes by Longoria is about success. It is a book that links us with a proud heritage of participation in another facet of life in America often neglected by the historians of our country."

BERKELEY - California opens its first season of the new century with an intersectional match-up against Utah. The Bears have had a good amount of success in openers of late, winning 10 of the past 13 season-opening games. This will be the third straight season-opener in Memorial Stadium, with the Bears beating Houston, 14-10, in 1998 and Rutgers last season, 21-7. Prior to those games, Cal had opened its season on the road for five straight years. Overall, Cal has a 69-42-5 (.616) record in season-openers, but is even more dominant in season-opening games in Memorial Stadium with a 36-13 (.735) mark. Cal Meets a Utah Team in Midst of 3-Game Pacific-10 Mini-Schedule California and Utah meet for only the fourth time in history and the first time in 36 years as this year's game is the first of a two-game series that sees Cal travel to Salt Lake City on Sept. 13, 2003. The Bears won the first three games in the series, 63-0 in 1920 in Berkeley, 36-21 in 1958 in Berkeley and 35-22 in 1963 in Salt Lake City, before dropping a 14-0 decision to the Utes in Berkeley in 1964. Utah opened its season on Saturday at home vs. Arizona and will host Washington State next week before starting its Mountain West schedule. California is 11-6 overall against Mountain West Conference opponents, but has lost three of the past four meetings against MWC opponents since 1994, including a 38-28 decision last year at BYU.

Gladstone Announces Four New Hires In Reorganized Athletic Department
Revamped staff eager to build towards future of Cal athletics.
Aug. 17, 2001 BERKELEY, Calif. - Culminating a three-month national search for top candidates, University of California Athletic Director Steve Gladstone today announced the hiring of four executive associate athletic directors who will play prominent roles in his new administration. They include Mark Stephens, long-time marketing executive and former captain of Cal's 1985 football team, Daniel Coonan, assistant commissioner for governance and enforcement with the Pacific-10 Conference, Bob Rose, vice president, communications for the San Francisco Giants, and Teresa Kuehn, associate commissioner with the West Coast Conference. Gladstone introduced the foursome at a media conference held in Haas Pavilion on campus this morning. "Today's announcement represents a major first step towards achieving our goals in this new era of Cal athletics," said Gladstone, who assumed his AD post June 1. "To attract such quality people as Mark, Dan, Bob and Teresa is quite exciting and demonstrates the stature of this university and the enormous potential of our athletic department. We all share the same vision and enthusiasm for Cal athletics, and I am extremely confident in their abilities to provide the leadership, experience and creativity necessary for success."

Remarks Congratulating the Undefeated National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Football Teams
March 20, 1992 For exactly 200 years this has been the people's house, and today we welcome the people's choice, the Hurricanes and the Huskies, two great teams, both national champions. And some thought I should take the ball and go outside and try to settle this thing right now. [Laughter] No, no, my black-and-white shirt is at the cleaners. We're not going to do that. I don't need this. I've got enough problems without getting in the middle of you guys. Let me begin with what we have in common. You guys play football, and in an election year I sometimes feel like a football. But it's then that I recall what you did this year. Flanked by you household names, maybe I should be around getting autographs because this is a star-studded occasion. First alphabetically and I don't want to get into trouble comes Miami, number one in the Associated Press. Two years ago we met to celebrate a national title. Today we salute the Nation's current longest home winning streak, 45 games, and the longest regular season winning streak; 4 national titles in the past 9 years including 1991; only the third undefeated team in Miami history. And what memories you've given us. Of a college known as Quarterback U, Gino Toretta, take a bow. Where is the man? All right. Leon Searcy's not here, but I wanted to single him out. He's an offensive tackle, for those amateurs around here, who wears a 17EEE shoe; they call them battleships. [Laughter] And this year we are retiring the U.S.S. Missouri, and I think we ought to commission him instead. [Laughter] But I'm sorry he's not with us.

Cal's All-Time Big Game Team Selected
Many of the greatest names in California Football history highlight the 26-member all-time Cal Big Game team announced Thursday by the San Francisco Chronicle and Citibank, following a month-long vote by the public. The team was selected out of a group of more than 60 modern-era (since 1937) nominees submitted by Cal's athletic department. From ironman lineman Bob Reinhard who played before World War II, to several members of Pappy Waldorf's highly successful run as head coach, to the nucleus of Cal's explosive 1975 offense, the all-time Big Game team covers a large part of Golden Bear football history. The final balloting showed 12 offensive players and 12 defensive players to go along with a pair of kickers, although several players in the early era played both ways. The array of offensive stars on Cal's team would make any school proud.

At this time we have a surplus of beautifully double-matted sport pieces that we would like to offer on the net to you. These pieces are matted in team colors and ready to be framed. If you see something that interests you, please let us know and we will try to get you a scan of the piece. These are all "one of a kind" items, so as one is sold there are no others. All orders will be handled on a first come-first serve basis. KEEP COMING BACK TO THIS PAGE, because we add new items every week.
