Deacon Jones is a tough guy's tough guy. The Hall of Fame defensive end was the anchor of the Los Angeles Rams' "Fearsome Foursome," and never met a quarterback he liked. In fact, Jones is widely credited with inventing the term "quarterback sack." Deacon Jones defined toughness and revolutionized the role of the pass rusher. An eight-time Pro Bowl selection, Jones revolutionized the role of the pass rusher and was named the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year in 1967 and 1968. Page 2's Kevin Jackson caught up with Jones on Tuesday at the ESPY Celebrity Golf Classic, sharing a table with fellow tough guys Lee Majors, James Garner, Paul Hornung and Alice Cooper. We learned that Deacon hasn't lost one bit of his feistiness. Who's the toughest athlete in sports today? Jones: I'd have to cast the vote for myself. Because No. 1, I'm probably the toughest (expletive) here. Ain't no question about that with me. I'm the toughest guy here. If you want to eliminate me from the pack, you can pick somebody normal. Of course, quarterbacks are eliminated. We definitely don't want none of them in that mix. When you say tough, I got to be in that conversation. I'm clean. I mean, I ain't got no marks on me. I don't know nobody else who can say that who came out of any sport. I ain't got no marks on me, so I've got to be the baddest dude I know of.

Cable Modem Friday, August 2, 2002 Allen a teacher, a winner By Brandon M. Bickerstaff ESPN.com If football was George Allen's life, winning was his sustenance. "Every time you lose, you die inside," Allen once said, "and every time you win, you're reborn." Allen, who died of pneumonia in 1990 at the age of 72, won enough to make one think he might live forever. He's the only NFL coach with 10 or more years experience never to have a losing season, finishing with a 116-47-5 record in 12 seasons with the L.A. Rams and Washington Redskins. Years later, he even made a winner out of Long Beach State, leading the perennial loser to a winning season in 1990. On Saturday, with his posthumous induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Allen's legacy is sure to live on forever.

Trying to ignore Deacon Jones was like trying to ignore a parade through your living room. He was colorful, cocky, confident and athletically gifted, the leader of the Los Angeles Rams' Fearsome Foursome defensive line in the 1960s. Jones was a fast, rugged and mobile sackmaster, a Gino Marchetti-like pass rusher who helped set the standard for modern defensive end play. Jones was a 6-5, 272-pound unknown when he was selected out of Mississippi Valley State in the 14th round of the 1961 NFL draft. But that changed quickly. Jones played with the same flamboyant personality that he exhibited with reporters and soon became the leader of a devastating line that also included tackles Merlin Olsen and Roosevelt Grier and end Lamar Lundy. Deacon (a self-ascribed moniker that replaced the "too common" David) became a terror for blockers who were not quick enough to keep him from bursting into the backfield and quarterbacks who had to scramble for their lives. It was Jones who coined the term sack, "You know, like you sack a city you devastate it." In an effort to control Jones, teams used double- and triple-teams, but that strategy simply freed Olsen, his partner in the best tackle/end combination in NFL history.

Joe Namath By Allyson Turner "I came out of a hellhole, and I intend to cover that up before I die." Words from Deacon Jones, one of the greatest defensive players to step on the football field. Revolutionizing the game, he is credited for coining the term "sack," but unfortunately for Deacon, the NFL didn't recognize it as an official statistic until 1982. After attending college at South Carolina State and Mississippi Vocational, he was selected by the Rams in the 14th round of the 1961 draft. At 6-feet-4, 260 pounds, Jones used his speed, quickness and passion to become the most feared pass-rusher in the game. The Rams defensive line was one of the greatest in history and known as "The Fearsome Foursome." From left to right, they were Deacon Jones, Merlin Olsen, Rosey Grier and Lamar Lundy. During his 14-year career, Jones is credited with 180.5 unofficial sacks, and he developed a technique called the "head slap," a move that was copied by defenders until it was outlawed in the late '70s. Jones appeared in eight Pro Bowls, was All-NFL six times and twice voted Defensive Player of the Year. He was names to the NFL's 75th Anniversary team, the Team of the Sixties and was inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1980.

S.C. State Retires Jerseys of Deacon Jones and Donnie Shell
October 25, 1998 Orangeburg, SC - South Carolina State University retired the numbers of two of its former football standouts, David (Deacon) Jones (1957-58) and Donnie Shell (1970-73) Saturday. The number "90" that Shell wore during his playing days and the "66" donned by Jones were both retired as a lasting tribute to their achievements. Both of the honorees were on hand for the ceremony which occurred at halftime of the South Carolina State vs. Hampton I-AA showdown. The second-ranked Pirates won the contest, 20-7. Shell. a Whitmire, South Carolina native, was a standout linebacker and defensive back for the Bulldogs during his career, earning All-America honors in 1973. He was signed as a free agent by Pittsburgh in 1974 and went on to an illustrious career for the Steelers, earning All-Pro honors five times, and playing on four Super Bowl Championship teams. This past August, Shell was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame at South Bend, Indiana. He is currently Director of Player Development for the Carolina Panthers and resides with his family in Rock Hill, SC. Jones, one of two Pro Football Hall of Famers who started their careers at S.C. State (marion Motley of the Cleveland Browns is the other), had a standout career with the Los Angeles Rams, earning All-Pro honors ten times, and Pro Bowl selections on nine occasions.

For his last game at Wake Forest, James MacPherson was grateful that the game plan called for a bit more passing than usual. MacPherson completed 9 of 16 passes for a season-high 241 yards and two touchdowns as the normally grounded Demon Deacons beat Oregon 38-17 Monday in the Seattle Bowl.

and Karina Barba Combine the two and, for this young man, America was not exactly the land of opportunity it prides itself on being. Out of a barren, desolate field, however, grew a beautiful rose. If Deacon Jones had to go through life being shortchanged on opportunity, he was going to do more than just grab opportunity for himself. Once he had become one of the most famous men ever to have played the game of football, Deacon Jones knew that he had to make sure that a new generation did not get cheated as he had. Finances preclude Jones from giving unlimited opportunity to every child on the planet, but he was determined to provide hope and the possibility of opportunity for as many kids as possible. Out of his own childhood travails sprang the seed for what would flower into the Deacon Jones Foundation. "I’ve always had the idea," Jones says. "When you … see exactly how I came up, and if you were there or if you have really done some study on that period, you can see how difficult it was to do anything. Along the way, as I broke through the ice, as I kicked the door in, I wasn’t stupid enough not to take under consideration what the hell I was up against and how you beat it.

Undeterred by racism and poverty, Deacon Jones now offers a helping hand to inner-city youth
By Ron Pollack, Editor-in-chief
Nov. 20, 2000
Deacon Jones
as Hall of Fame player Deacon Jones is looking for one more sack. Retirement has taken Jones off the football field. No longer does he employ his punishing headslap to devastate offensive linemen. No longer does he dominate in the way that led him to eight Pro Bowls and a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. No longer is his job, as he used to like to say, "to kill quarterbacks." These days, Jones is still out to kill the opposition. Quarterbacks can breathe a deep sigh of relief, though, because they are no longer his target. "I came out of a hellhole and I intend to cover that up before I die," Jones says. "Coming from a poor inner city myself, I have an intimate knowledge of all the problems people face there." Simply put, Jones is out to sack inner-city misery through a scholarship program designed to also provide long-term life lessons, training and opportunity. Jones is taking his vaunted headslap and trying to go upside the head of inner-city despair. He is facing an opponent more diabolical than any quarterback he ever tried to annihilate.

He is a spokesman for the national hypertension awareness program, Have a Heart. He recently talked to staff writer Brian Landman about the Ravens-Giants matchup. I like the New York Giants. I think the Giants have the best balance, I really do. They have an equally good defense and a better offense than the Ravens and I think they have better special teams, too. And I think that's going to be the difference.

Not much can be said about this game. WFU came out and got burnt for 34 (yes, 34) first QUARTER points. The opening kickoff even got run back for a 98 yard touchdown and a 7-0 Duke lead. Although Wake beat Duke 35-14 in the next three quarters, the Deacs just couldn't come back. The loss hurts WFU bad in the bowl picture. They must beat Georgia Tech on Saturday to even be eligible.
    WFU 19 UNC 3
Wake Forest got the job done at Kenan Stadium on Saturday, November 6th. The Deacs pulled out a victory thanks in large part to senior kicker Matt Burdick's foot. Burdick was 4-4 on field goals which included 47 yarder in the first half. The Deacs seemed a little sluggish all game and were not very impressive, but they did what they needed. The Deacons scored their other points off of a Rhamen Love-Lane TD reception of 5. The TD was Love-Lane's first in his three years at Wake Forest. The Deacon defense was steady once again and only allowed the Heels 12 first down while only giving up 148 yards in total offense. More importantly, the Deacs gave up just three points and destroyed UNC's bid to win on homecoming. The Deacs (5-4) will travel to Durham to face Duke on Saturday.

The Clemson Tigers barely survived a high scoring affair on Saturday afternoon at Groves. The Deacs went down early when the Deacons oversnaped punter Matt Brennie, ending up in a safety. This gave the Tigers a commanding 2-0 halftime lead. However, WFU's Matt Burdick came back strong in the second half with a long 23 yard field goal which gave the Deacs a 3-2 lead. But, Clemson took over the rest of the 2nd half in the scoring department and scored a record high 10 points in 2 quarters on a 19 yard Lazzara FG as well as a 1 yard Brandon Streeter run. Both teams moved to 4-4 on the season. Wake Forest plays the almighty 1-7 Tarheels or Tar Heels or whatever next week...
