The astronomy program prepares students for careers in several broad areas. The B.A. is aimed primarily at students interested in secondary education in the physical sciences, science policy, and science and technical writing. The B.A. can also prepare students to continue their studies in astronomy in graduate school as well. Degree Requirements To complete the B.A., students must complete at least 120 credits. The number of credits completed in the major varies depending on a student's specialization, but at least 15 credits must be taken with the Ast designator. The astronomy degree has several different tracks depending on the area of specialization the student wishes to pursue. Each of these tracks has the same core math, physics, and astrophysics requirements. In addition to these core courses, each track requires additional credits specific to the area of specialization. These tracks are: secondary education, science writing, science policy, and scientist.

Academics Undergraduate Fact Sheets Physics and Astronomy
Physics, the science of matter and energy, is the study of the deepest mysteries of our universe, ranging from subatomic particles to cosmology. Exploring ideas of space, time, matter, energy and radiation, it serves as the basis for the physical sciences.
At UW-Eau Claire, we also combine the study of physics with astronomy to apply the ideas of physics to the study of planets, stars, galaxies and all celestial phenomena within reach of our telescopes. These two areas share a vast array of common ideas and knowledge, and discoveries in physics often aid progress in astronomy and vice versa. WHY STUDY PHYSICS?
  • Modern society is influenced by physics in countless ways, including recent development in such fields as laser optics, miniaturized electronics, nuclear energy and medical instrumentation. It's a fascinating field in which you try to solve mysteries of the universe such as: What are the fundamental forces in the universe? What holds atoms together? How does an airplane fly? It's solid preparation for graduate studies in physics, surface science, astronomy, medical physics, medicine, teaching, engineering, architecture, law, and for careers working in computer companies, planetariums, government laboratories, the military, industry and the Peace Corps.

Astronomy majors study the nature of stars, gaseous nebulae, and phenomena like quasars and black holes and take a variety of generalized and specialized courses to meet their own interests. Our unique program blends course work with cutting-edge research opportunities involving ground-and space-based telescopes and state-of-the-art computers. Students work one-on-one with faculty doing exciting research at the forefront of physics and astronomy, leading to co-authorship on research presentations at professional meetings. The Physics and Astronomy Department provides an analytical and scientific background for students planning for graduate school, a career in industry, business, or science education. An Astronomy major helps prepare students for graduate school or careers in computer science, medicine, teaching, engineering, patent law, medicine, science writing, or science reporting.

department requirements contact The astronomy minor is suggested for those students who want to increase their knowledge of basic physics and astronomy as it applies to other branches of science or engineering. The minor gives students a qualitative overview of the universe, as well as a more in-depth view of some of the aspects of astrophysics. A minor in astronomy can be of great value to students majoring in many subjects. It can broaden and deepen students' understanding of their majors and of the surrounding universe. It can also increase their options for graduate study and employment, and it will enhance their academic record. Although students majoring in fields that are not science or technology related will find the astronomy minor more challenging than those that are, it may be of even greater value for such students because of the expanded career opportunities it can offer.

Astronomy Down to Earth
Foothill College Astronomy Instructor Andrew Fraknoi has written Voyages to the Planets , a new textbook co-authored with NASA-Ames Research Center Chief of Space Science David Morrison and National Observatories Director Sidney Wolff . In addition to detailing the latest discoveries in planetary exploration, the authors say the book is the first planetary textbook with jokes, analogies, humor and accessible writing.
Fraknoi will teach ASTRO 10A: An Introduction to Our Solar System and Other Planetary Systems using the new textbook and his collection of slides from NASA and telescopes around the world when Winter Quarter classes get under way Jan. 3. A background in science is not required for this class. Students will also have the opportunity to visit the Foothill College Observatory to view planets through several telescopes.
Fraknoi is the only community college astronomy instructor in the nation to have an asteroid named after him. He has received the Annenberg Foundation Prize of the American Astronomical Society and the Klumpke-Robert Prize of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, the two highest national honors in astronomy education and popularization.

(department maintained) is an exciting place where you explore the very foundations of the universe. Whether you are studying in the observatory with our computer-controlled telescope, working with our particle accelerator or with our subcritical nuclear reactor, you have the opportunity to explore the underpinnings of our existence. What Is Distinctive About Valpo's Program?
Facilities:

Valpo is fully computerized in astronomy, nuclear physics, and more. This includes high speed computers and computer interfaces that enable students to learn valuable laboratory techniques, applicable immediately after graduation in employment and in graduate school. Our astronomical observatory features a 16-inch computer controlled reflecting telescope. Valpo physics labs feature a subcritical nuclear reactor, as well as laboratory stations with ultrasonic motion detectors, LED photogates, and thermocouples. Students have hands-on experience running the particle accelerator in the nuclear physics laboratories, the astronomical telescope and sophisticated data collection equipment, etc. Astronomy students learn to operate the Valparaiso University Astronomical Observatory and have full responsibility for open viewing sessions for people from the community and from the campus. They also participate in data collection at the observatory if they are engaged in astronomical research. See
