What is Astronomy Education Research?
Astronomy Education Research is a powerful tool in evaluating the quality of your current instruction, as well as in guiding your curriculum reform efforts. Research tools not only can offer insights into your students' opinions, but they can provide information on what your students have actually learned. The purpose of Astronomy Education Research is to introduce several research techniques (some borrowed from the physics education research community) that can help answer the questions you have about your course. The research also explores assessment and research topics generated by the tutorial participants.

Astronomy Education: A Global Perspective

Planetarian , September 1995 Planetarians are part of a worldwide network of astronomy educators-"kindred spirits" in the communication of astronomy. This network includes planetarians in other countries, and also educators and astronomers (both professional and amateur) working in other settings but sharing the same goals. This article is written from my perspective as president of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) Commission on the Teaching of Astronomy.
Introduction
Why, then, is astronomy so often the "poor cousin" in the school science curriculum? The same problems and issues seem to occur all over the world: (i) few teachers, especially at the elementary level, have any training in astronomy; (ii) teachers think that astronomy must be technical and mathematical, and requires elaborate teaching equipment; (iii) simple, inexpensive, "hands-on" activities are needed-preferably ones which get around the problem that "the stars come out at night, the students don't; (iv) inappropriate teaching techniques fail to overcome students' ingrained misconceptions about physical and astronomical phenomena; (v) many students (especially girls) are turned off science at an early age; (vi) scientific illiteracy is widespread among students and the public.
Current Developments in the US
The results of these efforts will soon be available to astronomy educators around the world. In order to facilitate this process, to co-ordinate the next phase of development of astronomy education, and to ensure that present efforts meet the needs of all students, the Astronomical Society of the Pacific is holding a major symposium on astronomy education on June 24-25, 1995 at the University of Maryland. The proceedings of this conference should be the definitive guide to astronomy education in the US.

The Education news group website http://www.egroups.com/group/astroednz provides a forum for the exchange of information related to the teaching of Astronomy. The Education Section also publishes a quarterly magazine "GALAXY - TE KORURANGI" a 16 page magazine for children with information on the night sky, space and astronomy articles, stories, cartoons and puzzles. Further information can be found at the GALAXY website . The GALAXY Editor is Marilyn Head, marilyn@actrix.gen.nz In addition to the above, resources and assistance to science educators and school parties are provided by many of the local astronomical societies throughout New Zealand. Such resources can be of great help to teachers wishing to provide quality learning experiences in Astronomy for their pupils and also to help with the professional development of science teachers themselves. For the Beginner
For the beginning sky watcher, I prepare monthly all-sky charts to help people learn the constellations. I hope soon to allow this to be run interactively. You may get my chart for September here . These charts are published monthly in the York University faculty newspaper, The Gazette. You are invited to come to the public tours at York University Observatory , which I volunteer with.
    Free Planisphere:
Want to learn the sky? You may get a free planisphere here . A planisphere allows one to see what the sky will look like at any time throughout the year. They sell in bookstores for about $15 but you can make your own for about 60 cents!

Here's my Sky events calendar for the month of June.

The Final Frontier It's closer to home than you think! Space holds a magnetic fascination for most of us: people are ever eager to know more. So, to meet this need, we have devised an exciting public outreach programme comprising presentations and activities which exploit this interest and bring it down to Earth. Whether you are 6 or 96, you can sit back and take in our presentations... Or you may prefer to go "hands-on" and investigate science and technology from the practical side. Projects range from the designing and flying a model rocket to carrying out Lunar Exploration; from mapping our Solar System to studying the possibilities of finding alien life. The tranformation of education into entertainment, our aim is to make science FUN... Why not enjoy learning?
