The media called him the Prince of Pop . Warhol made his way from a Pittsburgh working class family to an American legend. Born in Pittsburgh Andy was born in 1930 in Pittsburgh as the son of Slovak immigrants. His original name was Andrew Warhola. His father was as a construction worker and died in an accident when Andy was 13 years old. Andy showed an early talent in drawing and painting. This gave the Nationalgalerie not only the first permanent home for its collection of contemporary art but also a venue for innovative exhibitions and events. The collection The exhibition area of about 8,000 square metres is dedicated to art from the second half of the 20th century onwards. The collection contains works from Berlin's State Museums as well as very many items belonging to the private Berlin collector, Erich Marx. At the core of the Marx collection are works by such internationally renowned artists as Andy Warhol, Cy Twombly, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Anselm Kiefer and Joseph Beuys. The collection also includes over 450 drawings by Joseph Beuys "The secret block for a secret person in Ireland", and about sixty by Andy Warhol. Also on show are representatives of Minimal Art and the Provera. The "Berlin Circle" by the English artist Richard Long and a work by Günther Uecker were directly inspired by the Hamburger Bahnhof. The whole of the ground floor in the western wing is devoted to works by Joseph Beuys. Warhol once said, "I admit to having worn suede and leather myself for a while, but you just never felt clean, and it's degenerate anyway to use animal skins …" In a letter faxed to the museum director today, PETA offers to replace the leather couches with ones covered in a nonleather material. The animal rights organization feels that the couches should be removed or marked with Warhol's last words on the subject in order to give visitors a better perspective. Ronald Tavel, Mario Montez, and Edie Sedgwick strut their superstardom in these early works by the master of pop kitsch camp BY GARY MORRIS For most people, the quintessential "Andy Warhol film" is Trash, or perhaps Heat, or maybe Bad, or even the 3-D versions of Dracula or Frankenstein that bear his name. But these are all in fact Paul Morrissey 's films; Warhol had nothing to do with them besides adding his name to boost the box-office. True Warhol films are works like Chelsea Girls and Empire, Bikeboy and Blow Job, or the present duo, Restaurant and Screen Test #2, both from 1965. Morrissey and Warhol have a certain campiness in common, but there's ultimately very little resemblance between a commercially minded film like Trash and any of the early Warhols, whose sheer unmarketability is one of their themes. Warhol himself called his early films no more than "a way of passing the time," and he was so dismissive of convention that he'd sometimes continue to "shoot" scenes even without film in the camera. Such attitudes make it tempting to dismiss the work, much of it unseen in years and some of it never seen, as perverse and pointless. Even today, audiences usually storm the exits on the rare occasion when a grueling epic like Empire (1964), an eight-hour static image of the Empire State Building, is shown.

In addition to his pop art paintings of the 1960s at the Andy Warhol Museum, the artist's other lifelong obsession is now on view: "Possessions." It seems that Andy Warhol was not only born to paint; he was born to shop. "If the expression 'born collector' ever applied to anyone, it certainly applied to Andy Warhol," says archivist John Smith, who tracked down hundreds of Warhol's personal objects that had bee nauctioned off at Sotheby's in the 1980s. "It was something that began early in his life and continued up until the time that he died." From Indian masks and Navaho rugs, to furniture and Fiesta Ware, there isn’t much Warhol didn’t collect. "I used to bring Andy a lot of cookie jars," recalls Paul Warhola, Andy's older brother, who helped feed his obsession for cookies and the jars in which they were stored. Says Smith, "The one thing that I think we're certain of is that Warhol hardly, if ever, got rid of anything."

Andy Warhol Andy Warhol was born in 1928 in Pittsburgh to immigrant parents of (Ruthenian) Czechoslavakian stock. He studied pictorial design at Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh from 1945-49. After a successful and distinguished career as a commercial illustrator in New York in the 1950s, he began exhibiting his paintings with silkscreened Pop imagery in 1962. In 1963 he began making films. His art was thereafter shown widely in numerous exhibitions throughout the world. Warhol: Il Cenacolo (The Last Supper) opened in Milan at the Galleria Refettorio delle Stelline on January 22, 1987. On February 22, 1987 Warhol died following gall bladder surgery.
