Joslyn Art Museum Omaha, NE Elihu Vedder's Drawings for the Rubaiyat Left to right: Elihu Vedder, Cover, 1883-1984, watercolor on paper; Elihu Vedder, The Cup of Death, chalk, pencil and ink on paper I n the ten months from May 1883 to March 1884, American artist Elihu Vedder (1836-1923) completed a series of 54 drawings in pencil, ink, chalk, and watercolor to accompany the 1884 edition of Omar Khayyam's Rubaiyat. All of these original drawings, which were proclaimed a masterwork of American art, are included in the special exhibition Elihu Vedder's Drawings for the Rubaiyat from the National Museum of American Art on view at Joslyn Art Museum from September 26,1998 through January 3, 1999. The exhibition will also include two first edition printings of Khayyam's Rubaiyat with Vedder's "accompaniments" (he disliked the term illustrationsj. New York City, studied in Paris. From 1867 his permanent residence was Rome. He often used romantic landscape as a setting for allegorical images. Among his works are The African Sentinel and The Pleiades (Metropolitan Mus.) and The Keeper of the Threshold (Carnegie Inst., Pittsburgh). He is known for his illustrations for Fitzgerald's translation of The Rubaiyat. His symbolic and decorative murals include five lunettes representing good and bad government (Library of Congress). American Collection Elihu Vedder visited Egypt long before he created this painting in 1891. He made sketches of rounded tombs similar to the ones he painted here. He also described in his diary the activities of merchants, who slowly moved their goods across the desert on camel. The stone forms in the right foreground are stepping platforms used to mount the camels. The broad foreground, almost empty of forms, suggests the vast and desolate expanses Vedder felt in the desert. The camels are silhouetted against the low background hills, a device that calls attention to an exotic animal all but unknown to nineteenth-century Americans. By hiding the tombs, on the left, among the rocky outcroppings, Vedder suggests the mystery of death that had long fascinated him. This hidden realm of the past boldly challenges the present day, represented here by the brilliant blue sky and the mundane activities of the small figures. Little Elihu Vedder Painting Wakes up Crowd by David Hewett The buyer was Spencertown, New York, dealer Karl Gabosh, who really did buy it for stock. The little gem, painted in 1868, was titled Roc's Egg and depicted the discovery of an egg of the Persian and Arabian mythological bird of prey. "I've been interested in Vedder all my life," Gabosh admitted. "He painted a wide variety of subject matter. Much of his work isn't as good as this one is. This piece is just stunning." Karl Gabosh wasn't surprised by the bidding war for the piece. "There were at least four phone bidders and I assume the one who stuck in to the end was a major New York City dealer. When a painting is the best Vedder to come on the market in your lifetime, you know it won't be cheap." Gabosh said the record price for a Vedder is in the neighborhood of $150,000. Search M.A.D.
