Jan van Eyck Special thanks to the Microsoft Corporation for permission to use following biographical information from Jan van Eyck was a Flemish painter, active in Bruges, who along with Robert Campin (previously known only as the Master of Flémalle) in Tournai, was the founder of the Ars Nova (“new art”) of 15th-century northern late Gothic painting. This style heralded the Renaissance in northern Europe. This period of Netherlandish art is characterized by a naturalistic style of vivid oil colors, meticulous detail, accurately rendered textures, and the illusion of three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional surface. Jan probably came from Maaseick in the province of Limbourg. In 1422 he was working in The Hague for John of Bavaria, count of Holland. In 1425 Philip the Good, duke of Burgundy, appointed him court painter, a position he retained until his death. Jan was on especially good terms with Philip, who entrusted him with certain secret diplomatic missions, presented one of his children with a christening gift, and personally interceded for him when he learned that Jan was having trouble collecting his salary. Jan's contemporaries were awed by his amazing technical skill and his precise renderings of carefully observed detail. These qualities explain why he was still called the King of Painters by his compatriots as late as the 16th century.

His 1434 work "The Arnolfini Spouses" at the National Gallery in London is extremely famous, in it the words "Johannes de Eyck fuit hic" appear above the mirror that reflects the back view of the couple who are exchanging their vows of everlasting love, as well as two other people, one of whom could have been Jan himself, who evidently wanted to consider himself part of the picture. Van Eyck also painted his wife and many "Virgins", paying attention especially to the facial expressions and the detail.

I picked Jan Van Eyck for very sentimental reasons. At the tender age of 17 I was introduced to Renaissance Art at the boarding school I attended in Switzerland. All of our dormitories were created to look like Renaissance era villas or mediaeval castles. In the foyer of our dorm hung a replica of The Marriage of Arnold Fini . Which was referred to by the students as Uncle Arni. At one point someone wrote a comment underneath the painting it said, 'Uncle Arni is watching you. Sneaking out will cause you to look like this' with an arrow pointing to the pregnant looking woman in the painting. Until I attended this class I was unaware that the true title of the artwork was The Arnold Fini Marriage When van Eyck began painting social structure was changing. The middle classes were beginning to form as the merchant class came into existence. The middle class now had the resources great enough to commission art works. Art became something that was economically attainable for others besides the aristocracy and the church. The Arnold Fini Marriage is a significant art work as it shows this movement of wealth. In this painting a Merchant is shown with his wife. In the forefront of the painting are his wooden puddle shoes to protect fine leather shoes are shown and a small household dog. These are things that a very well to do person would view as being common items which previously only the nobility could afford.

JAN VAN EYCK Portrait of Jan Van Eyck INTRODUCTION Jan Van Eyck was one of the most influential people in his time. BACKGROUND No one ever knew when Jan was born. They think it must have been around the 1390's. Jan died in 1441 and was buried on July 9, that year. Jan Van Eyck was Dutch. He was born in the province of Limberg, in the region between the Netherlands and what is now called Belgium. Jan had an older brother named Hubert Van Eyck, who was also an artist. The brothers often worked together; sometimes Hubert would start a painting and Jan would finish it. Jan worked for Phillip the Good and the Duke of Borgonga. ACCOMPLISHMENTS Jan Van Eyck completed fifteen paintings in sixty-one years. Jan Van Eyck's most famous painting was Giovanni Arnolfini and his Bride, (painted in 1434). The Ghent Altarpiece was started by his brother, Hubert Van Eyck, in 1425 (years before he died), then finished by Jan seven years later. In The Last Judgement Jan and Hubert had to use their imagination. To them the painting meant "The end of time when the dead rise from their graves and are judged." Another one of Jan's finest paintings was Man In Red Turban (painted in 1433). The sitter could have been Jan himself because there was a slight strain in the eyes as though he were looking into a mirror.
