Apart from Rubens , the greatest Flemish painter of the 17th century. In 1609 he began his apprenticeship with Hendrick van Balen in his native Antwerp and he was exceptionally precocious. Although he did not become a master in the painters' guild until 1618, there is evidence that he was working independently for some years before this, even though this was forbidden by guild regulations. Probably soon after graduating he entered Rubens's workshop. Strictly speaking he should not be called Rubens's pupil, as he was an accomplished painter when he went to work for him. Nevertheless the two years he spent with Rubens were decisive and Rubens's influence upon his painting is unmistakable, although ven Dyck's style was always less energetic. In 1620 van Dyck went to London, where he spent a few months in the service of James I (1566-1625), then in 1621 to Italy, where he travelled a great deal, and toned down the Flemish robustness of his early pictures to create the refined and elegant style which remained characteristic of his work for the rest of his life. ENGLISH ANHTONY VAN DYCK (1599-1641) Self-Portrait Sir Anthony van Dyck was born on March 22, 1599, in Antwerpen. He was son of a rich silk merchant, and his precocious artistic talent was already obvious at age 11. In 1618 he was admitted to the Antwerpen guild of painters. Next two years he spent as a member of the workshop of the Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens in Antwerpen. During 1620 to 1627 Anthony van Dyck traveled in Italy, where he visited different cities and stadied painting of the great Italian masters. Since 1627 to 1632, van Dyck worked in Antwerpen as a portraitist and a painter of church pictures. In 1632 he settled in London as King Charles I chief court painter. La formazione Allievo di H. van Baelen e collaboratore di P.P.Rubens, e nel 1620 ancora giovanissimo fu introdotto alla corte di Giacomo I d'Inghilterra. Soggiornò a lungo in Italia, soprattutto a Genova dal 1623 al 1627, e profondo fu l'influsso dell'arte italiana, in particolare veneziana, che ne rese più elegante il disegno, più fluido e prezioso il colore. La ritrattistica Si dedicò alla ritrattistica con risultati degni, per sapienza tecnica e interiorità psicologica dei più grandi maestri. Rientrato a Londra nel 1632, divenne pittore di corte sotto Carlo I, del quale celeberrimi sono i ritratti "Carlo I a caccia" ora esposto al Louvre di Parigi. Le prime opere Fra le opere più giovanili piene dell'irruenza incontrollata del colore: "Sileno ebbro" ora situato a Dresda nella Gemaldegalerie; "Cristo portacroce" ora ad Anversa nel Musée Royal; del periodo italiano oltre ai ritratti di nobili genovesi tra cui "Vergine del rosario" opera del 1627 ora a Palermo nell'oratorio del Rosario; della maturità "Calvario e Pietà" ora ad Anversa nel Musée Royal, "Madonna e committenti" ora al Louvre di Parigi. Celebre l'iconografia di van Dyck, pubblicata posteriormente alla sua morte ad Anversa nel 1645, serie di cento ritratti incisi su rame.
