Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641) was born in Antwerp, Flanders to a prosperous fabric merchant and his second wife. He developed his skill as a painter at a very young age, and by nineteen he was admitted into the painter's guild of Antwerp as a master. Shortly after, he began working in the studio of Peter Paul Rubens, who by this time had great fame throughout Flanders and much of Europe. By 1620, Van Dyck had become senior assistant to Rubens.
Van Dyck was introduced to both etching and engraving by Rubens, who used printmaking extensively and trained engravers for his own use. He developed a strong reputation as a painter while working under Rubens, becoming well-known for his history, religious, and portrait paintings. Due in part to his great skill as a portraitist, he became an important court painter to King James I of England, who was a source of many painting commissions for Van Dyck.
Like most of the portraits in Van Dyck's Iconography, "Jacobus De Breuck" is an engraving rather than an etching (ninety-nine of them are engravings, and fifteen are etchings). Instead of the more quick, spontaneous method associated with etching, engravings are produced through an exacting process, which requires the skill of a trained engraver. In preparing the series, Van Dyck created meticulous drawings and oil sketches as guides and then sent them to a professional engraver to execute the actual plates, which were then printed and marketed by publishers. "Jacobus De Breuck" was engraved by Paulus Pontius, who was one of the most renowned engravers in Antwerp at this time, and who was also employed by Rubens. The deliberate and intensive process of engraving is mirrored in the precise, formal, and controlled quality of "Jacobus De Breuck."

This is believed to be a posthumous portrait of the Countess Southampton to commemorate her passing in 1641. She is painted as the goddess Fortune who rules the cosmos and whose spirit lives on, triumphant beyond death, indicated by the skull at the sitter¹s feet.
Van Dyck was a student of Rubens and he clearly absorbed Ruben's flamboyant style in portraiture. Van Dyck is one of the great painters of fabric, brilliantly capturing texture and finish, particularly of satin and silk.
Van Dyck was very well travelled and frequently went to England where he was a favourite painter at the court of Charles I. He painted members of the Royal Family of England and many of the leading courtiers, including this work of Rachel de Ruvigny, the wife of Thomas Wriothlsey, 4th Earl of Southampton.

He soon acquired all the virtuosity of Rubens in rendering the texture and surface of things, whether it were silk or human flesh, but he differed widely from his master in temperament and mood. It seems that Van Dyck was not a healthy man, and in his paintings a languid and slightly melancholic mood often prevails. It may have been this quality that appealed to the austere noblemen of Genoa and to the cavaliers of Charles I's entourage. In 1632 he had become the Court Painter of Charles I, and his name was Anglicized into Sir Anthony Vandyke. It is to him that we owe an artistic record of this society with its defiantly aristocratic bearing and its cult of courtly refinement. His portrait of Charles I

Apart from Rubens, Sir Anthony van Dyck was the most important Flemish painter of the 17th Century. After a brief apprenticeship with van Balen, he became a member of the Antwerp painter's guild and in 1618 came under the tutorship of Ruben's himself working as the great master's assistant. Ruben's influence was powerful. Van Dyck's work gained a fluency and grace which was conferred on every subject. Though van Dyck also painted religious scenes and landscapes and began a series of etchings of famous contemporaries, it is for his portrait painting that his immortality has been assured. Indeed he will be remembered as one of the geartest portrait painters ever. English portrait artists especially were enriched by van Dyck's incomparable skill for painting materials and the elegance and refinement conveyed upon his sitters. His influence in portrait painting can be traced through to Sargent (1856-1925).

Van Dyck also painted mythological and religious scenes and was a fine engraver and etcher. Van Dyck was born in Antwerp, Belgium. He showed great talent for painting as a boy and had his own studio and pupils at the age of 16. Peter Paul Rubens From 1618 to 1620, Van Dyck worked with the famous painter Peter Paul Rubens. Van Dyck visited England briefly in 1629 and then lived in Italy from about 1621 to 1627. He painted in several Italian cities, including Genoa, Rome, and Venice. His portraits of Genoese nobles and their children rank among his finest works. Venetian Throughout his career, Van Dyck admired the style of the Venetian artist Titian. Van Dick's Italian paintings show Titian's influence in their warm colors and free brushwork. Van Dyck returned to Antwerp in 1627 and worked there for about five years. During this period, he painted his largest and finest religious pictures, including The Resurrection of Christ. England In 1632, Van Dyck moved to England, where King Charles I made him court painter. The artist became popular with English nobles and completed about 350 portraits of them, including 38 of the King . Portrait of Charles I Hunting, perhaps the most famous of these works.

Childhood Antoon Van Dyck was born on 21 March 1599 in Antwerp, then the main port of the Spanish Netherlands . A member of a well-to-do family, he was named after his paternal grandfather, who had himself once been a Master in the Antwerp painter's guild. But, in a city where there were more painters than bakers, Van Dyck the Elder had found it impossible to make his art pay. So he turned to commerce, becoming a successful merchant in luxury textiles - velvet, satin and silk. His eldest son, Frans, was Antoon's father. He expanded the family business but ultimately overreached himself, falling into financial 'disgrace' at the end of his life. In 1609, at the age of 10, the boy signed on as a 'leerjonger' or apprentice at the studio of Hendrick Van Balen, the Dean of the Antwerp painters. But Van Dyck's time here was a brief stop on a road to greater things. As soon as a vacancy occurred (and almost certainly by 1613 or 1614), Van Dyck transferred to the workshop of Peter Paul Rubens, who had recently re-settled in the city. In the Rubens Studio Van Dyck's new master was a man of towering importance. As the world's most famous, wealthy, influential and versatile painter his influence over the art of his age would find no parallel until the career of Picasso. Van Dyck, who seems to have got along badly with his own father, adopted Rubens as a surrogate parent. Rubens returned the compliment, finding in his talented new pupil a phenomenally quick and willing disciple.

Although he did not become a master in the painters' guild until 1618, there is evidence that he was working independently for some years before this, even though this was forbidden by guild regulations. Probably soon after graduating he entered Rubens's workshop. Strictly speaking he should not be called Rubens's pupil, as he was an accomplished painter when he went to work for him. Nevertheless the two years he spent with Rubens were decisive and Rubens's influence upon his painting is unmistakable, although ven Dyck's style was always less energetic. In 1620 van Dyck went to London, where he spent a few months in the service of James I (1566-1625), then in 1621 to Italy, where he travelled a great deal, and toned down the Flemish robustness of his early pictures to create the refined and elegant style which remained characteristic of his work for the rest of his life. His great series of Baroque portraits of the Genoese aristocracy established the `immortal' type of nobleman, with proud mien and slender figure. The years 1628-32 were spent mainly at Antwerp.

Anthony van Dyck (Antonis van Dijck) is one of the greatest Flemish painters. He was born on the 23rd of March, 1599 in Antwerp, 7th child in the family of a well-to-do silk merchant Frans van Dyck. After the early death of his mother he, at the age of 10, was sent to be trained by painter Hendrick van Balen in his workshop. In 1615, he already had his own workshop and an apprentice. In 1618, he was accepted as a full member of the Lucas Guild of painters. In 1618-1620, Van Dyck was working with Rubens as his pupil and assistant. He took part in the painting of the Jesuit Church in Antwerp. Also he painted such religious works as Samson and Delilah The Crowning with Thorns Judas' Kiss St. Martin Dividing His Cloak (1620-1621) and portraits: Frans Snyders Margareta de Vos Family Portrait (1621) and several known self-portraits . Although Van Dyck was with Rubens little more than two years, the older master's style affected his own indelibly. By his twenty-first year Van Dyck was already ripe for independence. His pride and ambition made it hard for him to stand in Rubens' shadow in Antwerp. He therefore accepted the invitation from
