The Hardware Companies Kollectors Klub Updated February 1, 2003 THCKK is a not-for-profit organization formed in March of 1996. It serves to distribute information and provide an interactive forum about hardware companies such as E.C. Simmons, A.F. Shapleigh and The Winchester Store (and the popular collectibles bearing their logos and house brands)and other historically interesting hardware companies. THCKK is committed to establishing avenues for communication for its members and providing as much information to collectors of Keen Kutter, Diamond Edge, Winchester, Simmons and Shapleigh Hardware items as possible. Presently THCKK has over 400 members representing 38 states. Dues are $20.00 per year and includes 3 newsletters. " The Winchester * Keen Kutter * Diamond Edge Chronicles" is the offical publication of THCKK and features articles, historical items, tidbits, updates on fakes and fantasy items, questions, want ads, free advertising space to buy, sell or trade any items related to this field. An annual Klub Meet is held. Usually the 3rd or 4th weekend in March. (Depending on Easter and Indy Advertising Show) This meet is open general public. Typically his dreamlike compositions combine a dry, meticulously detailed, and often humorous depiction of everyday life with an elaborate religious symbolism, as in The Resurrection, Cookham (192426 Tate Gallery, London). He studied at the Slade School from 1910 to 1914, and served in World War I. The influence of his military service is evident in his great mural paintings for the Memorial Chapel, All Soul's, at Burghclere, Hampshire, which depict crowded and active scenes of military life and the Resurrection, a recurrent theme in his work. For most of the remainder of Spencer's work two sources are responsible, Cookham and the Bible, and his pictures are a highly individual blend of the real and the imaginary. The Stanley Spencer Gallery The Kings Hall, High Street, Cookham, Berkshire, United Kingdom Tel: +44 (0)1628- The Stanley Spencer Gallery, opened in 1962, is unique as the only gallery in Britain devoted exclusively to an artist in the village where he was born and spent most of his working life. To Spencer, Cookham was the scene of heavenly visitations and its influence can be seen when touring the village . Set in the heart of the village he immortalised, the gallery occupies the former Victorian Methodist Chapel where Spencer was taken as a child to worship. Not far from " Fernlea ", the cottage where Spencer was born and lived in Cookham High Street, the gallery was opened in 1962 as a memorial through the effort of the people of Cookham and support from far beyond. It can be found at the end of the High Street (opposite the Bel and Dragon pub) The gallery is self-supporting and exhibits are changed during the year. It contains a permanent collection of his work, together with letter, documents, memorabilia, and the pram in which Spencer wheeled his equipment when painting landscapes. It also displays important works on long-term loan, and mounts a winter and summer exhibition each year. Over a thousand works have been shown since the gallery opened. It was in this Thames side village that he grew up happy and secure as a member of a large and talented family. Stanley's early life in Cookham was the well spring of his inspiration and the village itself was an important background for many of his paintings. Stanley Spencer was born at Fernlea, Cookham High Street on 30 June 1891, the tenth child of a family of eleven, of whom two died in infancy. His father William was an organist and music teacher. Pupils coming for lessons and his older siblings practicing the piano or the violin created a musical atmosphere in which Stanley flourished. Music was always an important part of his life. Two of his sister ran a school in a shed in Fernlea garden and Stanley received his early education at their hands. His reading was based on the Bible, Bunyan and Milton. He attended the parish church as well as his mother's Methodist chapel (now the Spencer Gallery Fernlea, especially at mealtimes, was loud with discussion and argument as Stanley's older brothers talked with each other and their parents. Intended fairly soon: Mircea Eliade's Religious Man The Shakers Stanley Spencer: Artist of the Sacred Earlier this year, the Tate British gallery in London mounted a magnificent exhibition of the work of the English painter, Stanley Spencer (1891-1959). A quick consideration of Spencer as an artist of the sacred will give some idea of the concerns of this site. It is easy enough to say that Spencer was an artist of the sacred. But what does that mean exactly? Consider one of Spencer's last works, The Crucifixion (1958). This depicts the crucifixion of Christ as taking place in a contemporary setting, in the High Street at Cookham, the Berkshire village where the artist was born and where he spent most of his life. Spencer had been producing comparable pictures throughout his career. A 1935 example is the St Francis and the Birds in which the saint is represented by the artist's aged father out in the village in his dressing gown and slippers. How are we to understand such works and the personality behind them? The Conventional Sacred The conventional take on the sacred does not apply to Spencer. In this perspective, the sacred is about the supernatural manifesting itself in the natural world, but strictly in the context of ancient and exotic religions. When Spencer was seventeen he entered the Slade School of Fine Art at University College, London. Other students at the Slade at that time included C. R. W. Nevinson and Mark Gertler. At the Slade he won the Composition Prize with The Nativity (1912). On the outbreak of the First World War, Spencer joined the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC). For a while he worked at Beaufort Hospital in Bristol but in August 1916 he was sent as part of the 68th Field Ambulance to Salonika, a port being defended by General Maurice Sarrail and 150,000, British and French soldiers. In May, 1918, Stanley Spencer was asked to contribute to the government planned Hall of Remembrance. The letter asked him to "to paint a picture under such title as A Religious Service at the Front, or any subjects in or about Salonika". However, it was not until after the Armistice that Spencer painting his most famous war painting, Travoys Arriving with Wounded at a Dressing Station at Smol, Macedonia, September 1916.
