John Singer Sargent at the National Gallery of Art WebMuseum: John Singer Sargent John Singer Sargent One of the great painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, John Singer Sargent made his fortune and reputation as a portrait painter of beautiful women and influential men. Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt, oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller, novelists Robert Louis Stevenson and Henry James, actress Ellen Terry and art patron Isabella Stewart Gardner all sat for him. But Sargent was much more than a portrait painter. He was also a prolific landscape and figure artist, producing more than 1,000 dazzling oils and watercolors. Now, Americans have a chance to see Sargent's breadth. Organized by the Tate Gallery, London, a new and unprecedented exhibition presents a full range of the artist's work. After three months in London, the show opens at the National Gallery of Art in Washington on February 21 for a stay until the end of May and then moves to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where it will be on view from June 23 through September 26. John Singer Sargent Carolus-Duran (Charles Emile Duran, 1838-1917). Sargent sailed to the United States in 1876 to establish his American citizenship, but remained active in Paris for the next decade without a trace of the yearning for America that was felt by most expatriates of the time. At the 1884 Paris Salon he exhibited a portrait of the New Orleans beauty Virginie Gautreau (exhibited under the title Madame X, 1884) which created an absurd and embarrassing scandal; Sargent as a result moved permanently to London in 1885. While his reputation as a portrait painter languished, he turned to impressionistic landscape and figure oils, including the poignantly saccharine Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose (1885-86). During a year long trip to the USA (Boston and New York), he completed nearly forty society portrait commissions, and his fortunes completely revived with his portrait of Lady Agnew of Lochnaw I should state my conviction that Sargent is the greatest of all watercolor painters. Technically there was nothing he could not do, that goes without saying; but he also found a unique harmony between his technique and his artistic vision. He reveals the constructive and sketchy nature of our visual experience in his method of creating cohesive and convincing visual images from quick, deft brushwork, and he emphasizes the fleeting, flowing, insubstantial nature of reality through his images of water, the outdoors, and the effects of light. Most stupefying of all is the consistently high standard of painting that appears across his few hundred surviving works.

John Singer Sargent , the son of an American doctor, was born in Florence in 1856. He studied painting in Italy and France and in 1884 caused a sensation at the Paris Salon with his painting of Madame Gautreau. Exhibited as Madame X , people complained that the painting was provocatively erotic.
The scandal persuaded Sargent to move to England and over the next few years established himself as the country's leading portrait painter. This included portraits of Joseph Chamberlain Frank Swettenham (1904) and Henry James (1913). Sargent made several visits to the USA where as well as portraits he worked on a series of decorative paintings for public b

An expatriate American, he showed remarkable technical precocity as a painter. After studying with Carolus-Duran, he achieved a great reputation for his portraits, employing a style that could be seen as derived from Velázquez by way of Manet . Moving in the circle of the Impressionists , he came to know most of them, and they reacted to his work in varying ways. Degas , as might have been expected, was brutally dismissive; Pissarro , in sending his son to see him in London, where Sargent spent the major part of his working life, described him as `an adroit performer'; but with Monet he had a close and mutually profitable relationship. In the 1880s he began to paint landscapes that were overtly Impressionist in technique and approach, despite a certain superficiality. At this time he visited Monet at Giverny on several occasions, painting two memorable portraits of him: Claude Monet Painting at the Edge of a Wood (c.1885; Tate Gallery, London) and Claude Monet in his Bateau-Atelier (1887; National Gallery of Art, Washington). Although Monet was later to deny that Sargent was an Impressionist, this was unjust, especially in relation to some of his works in the 1880s and 1890s. Indeed, Sargent's technique for painting large canvases out of doors, as evinced in

Claude Monet Painting at the Edge of a Wood
1887; Tate Gallery, London If not one of the Impressionists , Sargent was certainly an adherent of the movement. The derision aroused by his portrait of Madame Gautreau when exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1884 interrupted what might have been a close connection with French art and led him to make London his headquarters as a portrait painter. But he contributed to the establishment of an insular offshoot of Impressionism in the New English Art Club, of which he was one of the founder members in 1886, and sought to arouse interest in Monet 's work for America. He had the greatest admiration for Monet and was influenced in his own style by the French master. At the time he painted this portrait he had recently bought one of Monet's paintings, Rock at Tréport The portrait was painted in the spring of 1888 at Giverny where Monet had gone to live not long before. The wife of his former patron, Mme Ernest Hoschedé, whom Monet had befriended and who was to become his second wife, appears at the right of the picture. Sargent had not attempted the translation of light and shade into terms of pure color in the essentially Impressionist fashion but indicates the splashes of sunlight through the trees with his own vivacity, and his capacity for the brilliant sketch is well exemplified in the figures. © 16 Jul 2002
