ABBOT HOUSE, DUNFERMLINE DISPLAYS GROUND FLOOR Excavated to the 15th century medieval street level. In 1571 four barrel vaults were built behind the 15th century front wall. SERVERY Scene outside the house looking across 15th to 16th century Maygate. West vault was an iron foundry and the east vault was a bakery. On the lintel is a quotation from the Ballad of Sir Patrick Spens SHOP Both vaults formed the kitchen. The 16th century fireplace and slab floor can be seen. On the lintel is a quotation from The King's Quair by King James I FIRE ROOM Scene outside the house in May 1624 during the Great Fire of Dunfermline. Overhead is a representation of the gallery which was then on the front of the house. Abbot House is the sole remaining domestic building which survived the fire. The Faeds: A Remarkable Artistic Family article by Dr David Steel Gatehouse of Fleet is the home of the Faeds, a remarkable family of Scottish artists. Of the six children of James and Mary McGeoch born at Barlay Mill, Gatehouse between 1819 and 1829, no fewer than five would have their work exhibited at the Royal Academy in London and the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. The remaining son William would become a successful farmer in Australia. John, the eldest of James and Mary's children was born in 1819 and showed early artistic promise, beginning to paint miniatures of the local dignitaries at the age of nine. In 1840 John left his native town to develop his career in Edinburgh and had his first work accepted by the RSA in 1841. He would continue to exhibit at the Academy till 1895, becoming an Associate Member of the RSA in 1847 and a full Member in 1851. John's brother Thomas also showed an early interest in art but was apprenticed to a draper in Castle Douglas. However, soon after his father's death in 1842 John persuaded Thomas to join him in Edinburgh, where he helped finance his studies at the Trustees Academy. Thomas first exhibited at the RSA in 1844. Before long John and Thomas were joined in the capital by their brothers James and George who took up careers as engravers. At the time of the 1851 census we find the whole family in Edinburgh with sister Susan, herself a talented artist keeping house for Thomas and William and mother Mary with James and George.

Views of the Royal Museum (then Edinburgh Museum of Science and Art) c.1880's The National Museums of Scotland now function on six sites. In 1970 the Royal Scottish Museum incorporated the Scottish United Services Museum at Edinburgh Castle, founded in 1930 as part of the act of commemoration for Scottish servicemen killed in the First World War. It incorporates fine collections of edged weapons and firearms, uniforms, decorations, fine and applied art and archives relating to all three branches of the armed services in Scotland (The Scottish United Services Museum closed on 27 April 1998 to allow redevelopment work to take place prior to reopening in April 2000). In 1975 the Museum of Flight was established at East Fortune Airfield in East Lothian to house the Museum's extensive collections relating to the history of flight.

document.write(""); DUNGANNON Dunedin is connected by rail with Christchurch northward and Invercargill southward, with numerous branches. Electric tramways serve the principal thoroughfares and suburbs. The most important internal industries are in wool and frozen meat. The harbour is accessible, owing to extensive dredging, to vessels drawing 19 ft., at high tide; and Dunedin is the headquarters of the coasting services of the Union Steamship Co. Port Chalmers, however (9 m. N.E. by rail) though incapacitated by its site from growing into a large town, is more readily accessible for shipping, and has extensive piers and a graving dock. Dunedin is governed by a mayor and corporation, and most of its numerous suburbs are separate municipalities. The colony of Otago (from a native word meaning ochre, which was found here and highly prized by the Maoris as a pigment for the body when preparing for battle) was founded as the chief town of the Otago settlement by settlers sent out under the auspices of the lay association of the Free Church of Scotland in 1848. The discovery of large quantities of gold in Otago in 1861 and the following years brought prosperity, a great “rush” of diggers setting in from Australia. Golddredging, in the hands of rich companies, remains a primary source of wealth in the district. DUNES,’ or DUNK1RK DuNEs, BATTLE OF, was fought near Dunkirk on the 24th of May (3rd of June) 1658, between the French and English army under the command of Marshal Turenne and the Spanish army under Don Juan of Austria and the prince of Condé. The severest part of the fighting was borne by the English contingents on either side. Six thousand English infantry under General Lockhart were sent by Cromwell to join the army of Turenne, and several Royalist corps under the command of the duke of York (afterwards James II.) served in the Spanish forces. The object of the Spaniards was to relieve Dunkirk, which Turenne was besieging, and the complete victory of the French and English caused the speedy surrender of the fortress.
