Emily Mary Osborn Very little is known about this genre painter. Osborn was born in England and moved to London with her family in 1848. She studied art in London and later in Munich and began exhibiting at the Royal Academy when she was only 17 years old. She had a long and successful career and her work came to the attention of Queen Victoria who purchased several of her paintings. The most famous of Osborn's paintings, this work depicts the plight of the woman artist. Osborn presents us with a woman, accompanied by a small boy, in an art dealers shop. She has come here to sell her paintings but her presence in this enviroment is something of a scandal. Uncomfortably, she twists a string about her fingers, as the two men behind her look up from viewing a painting of a dancer to cast a disapproving gaze at her. The message of the painting is clear- While women can be portrayed in the world of art as objects of desire, they have no place in the world of the art market.
