First Presbyterian Church in Germantown Murals by Violet Oakley: Great Women of the Bible About the Artist Violet Oakley (1874-1961) was perhaps the greatest woman muralist the United States has produced. She grew up in Bergen Heights, NJ and began studying art at age 18. She studied art in Philadelphia and England. She came from a family of artists. Both her grandfathers were members of The National Academy of Design. From the mid 1890's until 1902, Ms. Oakley had a studio at 1523 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia. For the next four years, she lived in Villanova, PA. From 1906 until her death in 1961, Ms. Oakley lived and worked at 627 St. George's Road in Mt. Airy, Philadelphia. Religion and Politics Ms. Oakley was an Episcopalian who converted to Christian Science. She later became immersed in William Penn's Quaker ideas of universal brotherhood, freedom of religion, and a world court of arbitration to supplant wars. Her political activity focused on international issues of world peace and disarmament. Ms Oakley was a pacifist and a feminist of that generation of feminists that won the vote for women. Artistic Achievements Ms. Oakley began as an illustrator of books and magazines. She developed other talents: stained glass; designs for posters; work in charcoal and pastels; pencil, ink and watercolor on paper; oil on canvas.

Home Past members A HISTORY OF THE PLASTIC CLUB Prepared by Barbara MacIlvaine The Plastic Club entrance before recent rennovations In the late 1800's it was the custom for Philadelphia artists to visit back and forth in their Center City studios. "On an evening in March 1897, a group of women artists were visiting the Walnut Street studio of sculptor John Boyle. There, in the light of candles to illuminate the great spaces and under the shadows of some of his heroic statues, The Plastic Club drew the first breath of life and was first dimly formulated." (Club speech, n.d.) Art clubs for men already existed in the city, but women artists had no place to meet, to exchange ideas, and to exhibit their work. They wanted to bring together experienced, successful artists and younger artists who were just beginning their artistic careers. In March 1897, Emily Sartain , principal of the Philadelphia School of Design for Women (now Moore College of Art), hosted the organizational meeting of the Plastic Club at the school. The term "Plastic" in the name, suggested by Blanche Dillaye who later was elected the first president, refers to the state of any unfinished work of art. The club chose a motto: "All passes; art along enduring stays to us: the bust outlasts the throne, the coin, Tiberius." The club was formed "to promote a wider knowledge of art and to advance its interest by means of exhibitions and social intercourse among artists." Shortly thereafter, it rented a large room at 10 S. 18th Street.
