A mong the great American artists of the 20th-century, Georgia O'Keeffe stands as one of the most compelling. For nearly a century, O'Keeffe's representations of the beauty of the American landscape were a brave counterpoint to the chaotic images embraced by the art world. Her cityscapes and still lifes filled the canvas with wild energy that gained her a following among the critics as well as the public. Though she has had many imitators, no one since has been able to paint with such intimacy and stark precision. Teaching in South Carolina was Arthur Dow, a specialist in Oriental Art. Dow's interest in non-European art helped O'Keeffe move away from the forms she had found so stifling in her previous studies. She said of him, "It was Arthur Dow who affected my start, who helped me to find something of my own." Soon after O'Keeffe's return to Texas, she made a handful of charcoal drawings, which she sent to a friend in New York. The friend, Anna Pollitzer, showed them to Alfred Stieglitz, a photographer and gallery owner. He was enthused with the vibrant energy of the work, and asked to show them. Born in 1887, she grew up in a rural environment, but was determined to be an artist by the time she graduated from high school. O'Keeffe studied at both the School of the Art Institute in Chicago and the Art Students League in New York City from 1905-1908. While teaching art in Virginia, South Carolina, and Texas, she came under the influence of Arthur Wesley Dow, whose ideas encouraged her to develop a personal language for her own feelings and ideas. When she returned to New York in 1914, she met Alfred Stieglitz, for whom she became both a photographic subject and a presented artist whose worked he displayed in his "291" gallery, and later promoted at other galleries. They fell in love, living and working together in New York City and at Lake George, NY, and married in 1924.

Harriet Tubman Born in Wisconsin in 1887, GEORGIA O'KEEFFE studied and taught art until her late twenties. She met noted photographer and gallery owner, Alfred Stieglitz, in 1907. He encouraged her to move to New York City and paint full time, and was instrumental in launching her career. They were married in 1924. her work from this period includes gigantic floral pieces and skyscraper scenes. Drawn to the western landscape, O'Keeffe began spending summers painting in New Mexico at age 41. Her work became even more abstract and she started the skull paintings about this time. The Museum of Modern Art gave O'Keeffe a retrospective exhibit, their first for a women artist, in 1946, the year Stieglitz died. O'Keeffe thereafter led a reclusive life at her ranch in New Mexico, but continued paining until her death at age 98. She is among the greatest and most original painters of the twentieth century. Artist's Statement: "The first time this image hit the scene was on an Avalon Ballroom concert poster in 1967, when the Dead were just another San Francisco rock band. Mouse and Kelley would spend their days in the back rooms of the San Francisco library digging through art books. When Kelley saw Edmund J. Sullivan's illustration of the Skeleton in the Rubaiyat, he said: "This has Grateful Dead all over it." The band related so well to the poster art that they then used it for an album cover, and eventually made it their logo. The Skeleton & Roses is one of the most widely recognized rock icons ever. Pre-War American Painting There have always been interesting American artists, and at least two 19th-century painters, Thomas Eakins and Winslow Homer, influenced the course of future art in the United States. During the 1920s and '30s, Edward Hopper and Georgia O'Keeffe emerged as the inspirational new painters of distinctive American traditions. Hopper's work was strongly realist, his still, precise images of desolation and isolated individuals reflecting the social mood of the times. O'Keeffe's art was more abstract, often based on enlarged plants and flowers, and infused with a kind of Surrealism she referred to as ``magical realism''. She may not have been a great painter, but her art was highly influential.
