Edouard Manet was born into the ranks of the Parisian bourgeoisie on January 29, 1832. His Mother, Eugenie-Desiree Fournier, was a woman of refinement and god daughter of Charles Bernadotte, the Crown Prince of Sweden. Edouard's father, Auguste Manet, was a magistrate and judge who hoped that Edouard would someday follow in his footsteps, but Edouard was destined to follow another path. Although well educated, Manet did not particularly excel within the academic environment but he showed a propensity toward drawing and the arts. His Uncle Charles Fournier encouraged Manet's appreciation for the arts and often took him and his childhood friend, Antonin Proust, on outings to the Louvre. In 1850 after serving in the merchant marines, Manet entered the studio of Thomas Couture where he studied until 1856. He was influenced by the old masters, particulary Velazquez and Goya , but Manet reasoned that ones art should reflect ideas and ideals of the present rather then the past. So disagreeing with Diderot's theory that great art only reflected the costume of the past, Manet sought instead to follow the advice of Baudelaire...to depict a contemporary realism, to be "

Yet this was the case in 1850 when Edouard Manet began to study painting. Young artists could expect to succeed only through the official Academy exhibitions known as Salons, whose conservative juries favored biblical and mythological themes and a polished technique. Within twenty-five years, however, both Paris and painting had a new look. Urban renovations had opened the wide avenues and parks we know today, and painting was transformed when artists abandoned the transparent glazes and blended brushtrokes of the past and turned their attention to life around them. Contemporary urban subjects and a bold style, which offered paint on the canvas as something to be admired in itself, gave their art a strong new sense of the present. Son pere etait Chef du personnel au Ministere de la Justice, sa mere fille d'un agent diplomatique a Stockholm. Tres tot, sous l'impulsion de son oncle qui l'emmene dans les musees, Edouard Manet execute ses premiers dessins et realise de nombreuses copies. Plutot que d'entreprendre des etudes de droit comme le souhaitait son pere, Manet s'inscrit au concours de l'Ecole Navale. Ein Blick auf das Spätwerk bis 1883, das zuweilen auf die stilistischen Errungenschaften des Impressionismus rekurriert oder damit experimentiert, beendet die Ausstellung. Eine kleine Auswahl von Arbeiten auf Papier zeigt ergänzend Studien und eigenständige Werke. Für die Malerei der Moderne ist Manet tatsächlich eine der Schlüsselfiguren, neben den Malern der Schule von Barbizon oder Courbet, die auf ihre Art die ersten Breschen in die traditionsverhaftete Salonmalerei schlugen. Respinto agli esami, decise di iniziare la carriera artistica. Dal 1850 al 1856 studiò presso il pittore accademico Couture, pur non condividendone gli insegnamenti. Viaggiò molto in Italia, Olanda, Germania, Austria, studiando soprattutto i pittori che avevano scelto il linguaggio tonale quali Giorgione, Tiziano, gli olandesi del Seicento, Goya e Velazquez. Notevole influenza ebbe sulla definizione del suo stile anche la conoscenza delle stampe giapponesi. Nell’arte giapponese, infatti, il problema della simulazione tridimensionale viene quasi sempre ignorato, risolvendo la figurazione solo con la linea di contorno sul piano bidimensionale. Manet è stato un pittore poco incline alle posizioni avanguardistiche. Egli voleva giungere al rinnovamento della pittura operando all’interno delle istituzioni accademiche. E, per questo motivo, egli, pur essendo il primo dei pittori moderni, non espose mai con gli altri pittori impressionisti. Rimase sempre su posizione individuale e solitaria anche quando i suoi quadri non furono più accettati dalla giuria del Salon. Le sue prime opere non ebbero problemi ad essere accettate. La rottura con la critica avvenne solo dopo il 1863, quando Manet propose il quadro «La colazione sull’erba». In questa tela sono già evidenti i germi dell’impressionismo. Manet aveva abbandonato del tutto gli strumenti classici del chiaroscuro e della prospettiva per proporre un quadro realizzato con macchie di colori puri e stesi uniformemente. In esso, tuttavia, l’occhio riesce a cogliere una simulazione spaziale precisa se osservato ad una distanza non ravvicinata.

Edouard Manet Edouard Manet nasce a Parigi il 23 gennaio del 1832. Dopo una breve parentesi come ufficiale di marina, decide di dedicarsi alla pittura. In questo periodo frequenta l'ambiente di artisti e letterati che si riuniscono al Café Guerbois e alla Nouvelle Athènes. Tra essi figurano, oltre Baudelaire e Zola, i principali esponenti dell'impressionismo: Nadar, Degas, Monet, Renoir e Pissaro, che considerano Manet figura di riferimento per le sue intuizioni artistiche. Più tardi conosce B. Morisot, che fa anche posare per il suo quadro "Il balcone". Lo scandalo e il riconoscimento Solo nel 1868 gli viene accettato al Salon "Il Ritratto di Zola”. Di tanto in tanto si trova con Monet e Renoir a dipingere "en plein air", e, grazie anche alla loro ricerca, la sua pittura diventa più sciolta e dai toni più luminosi. Manet comunque non entra a far parte ufficialmente del movimento impressionista, perché la sua ambizione resta l’affermazione nel mondo artistico ufficiale: quello dei Salon.
