Arthur Hughes as Illustrator of Sing-Song T he acclaim that Hughes won as a painter carried over into his reputation as an illustrator, where many of the same Pre-Raphaelite elements benefited his work. His illustrations for George Macdonald's children's book, At the Back of the North Wind (1871), used a "tight, controlled line" and "textural effects" for a distinctly Pre-Raphaelite treatment of the subject ( Arbuthnot , 915). He was also known for using white areas and blank space on the page to "give a quality of light and to build a feeling of shape and depth" ( Arbuthnot When he undertook the illustration of Christina Rossetti's Sing-Song , it was much to the delight of the poet. She was apparently taken by several pictures in particular, and in a letter to her brother William , she wrote: "What a charming design is the ring of elfs producing a fairy ring... ...also the apple tree casting the apples... ...also the three dancing girls with the angel... kissing one... ...also I liked the crow-soaked grey stared at by his peers" ( Zaturenska The Sing-Song illustrations clearly convey those elements which characterize Hughes' work and its strong Pre-Rapaelite influence. The absence of framing around the drawings and the white area left inside objects illuminate the space and give depth to the page. Arthur Hughes (1832-1915) Arthur Hughes was born in London and studied to become a painter at the Royal Academy. There he met Rossetti, Millais and Holman Hunt, and joined them in making the mural decoration of the Oxford Union. Hughes remained under the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites, and many of his paintings follow, more or less closely, the themes produced by members of the Brotherhood. Hughes produced a series of pictures of lovers, making a feature of clinging ivy on old trees, and his subjects tended to be out of doors. As well as being a painter, Hughes became one of the more successful Pre-Raphaelite illustrators, drawing many pictures for the illustrated magazines and books of the 1860s and onwards. Several later illustrators followed his style for nursery and fairy tale books, among them Helen Stratton. Bock-Hughes Family James Arthur Hughes b. June 16, 1937 (Baltimore Ohio) - d. Feb. 12 1997 (Columbus Ohio) Jim Hughes grew up on a farm in Fairfield County, Ohio. His parents came from Gallia County, Ohio. He did a stint in the Navy, married Kay Yvonne Wagner in 1960, and went to night school at Ohio State University. Soon he became an actuary for the Blue Cross health insurance organization. He and Kay built a home in Columbus Ohio, and had two sons, James J. Hughes and Thad Hughes. They divorced in 1975, and Jim soon married his high school sweetheart, Rosemary Leist. He was working for the Blue Cross of Western Pennsylvania when he developed cancer and died. Jim became an atheist in his early twenties, and he maintained a consistently sceptical and humanistic outlook throughout his life. He was active in movements for dignity in dying, national health insurance, and a non-imperialist U.S. foreign policy. He was an occasional member of the Unitarian-Universalist Church. Jim's two favorite authors were Mark Twain and Joseph Conrad. These two quotes give some of the flavor of Jim's outlook on life in his last year. After all, Jim's career was the calculation of the statistical incidence of disease, death and disability as it afflicted Midwesterners... Droll thing life is - that mysterious arrangement of merciless logic for a futile purpose. The most you can hope from it is some knowledge of yourself - that comes too late - a crop of unextinguishable regrets. I have wrestled with death. It is the most unexciting contest you can imagine. It takes place in an impalpable greyness, with nothing underfoot, with nothing around, without spectators, without clamour, without glory, without the great desire for victory, without the great fear of defeat, in a sickly atmosphere of tepid scepticism, without much belief in your own right, and still less in that of your adversary.

The following year he won an art studentship to the Royal Academy Schools, where in 1849 he won the silver medal for antique drawing. St. Louis Post-Dispatch, August 20, 1965) [Arthur Llewelyn] Hughes came to Washington University in 1923 to succeed Arthur Holly Compton as head of the physics department, and it was in the ensuing years of his chairmanship that the department, for all purposes, crossed the threshold into modern physics. There were two reasons for this, and for one of them neither Hughes nor anyone else could have take credit. It was simply the times. The day of quantum mechanics had arrived, and sooner or later the complexion of the department was bound to change. Indeed, the change already had begun under Compton. "I had the idea that we should get men who were so good that we couldn't keep them, on the theory that these men would do a great deal of good work for the university before they left," Hughes said. "It was a nuisance when they left, insofar as I had to find new men. Nevertheless, I think it was very profitable for the department to have had them here." Hughes' own interests in physics have been broad: the list of his publications, for instance, shows a steady output of articles from 1910 into the 1960s. His
