Arthur HUGHES Biography 27 January 1832, London - 22 December 1915, Kew Arthur Hughes studied under Alfred Stevens and entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1847. His first Royal Academy exhibit was Musidora in 1849. Upon reading The Germ in 1850 he was converted to Pre-Raphaelism. He later confessed that 'I am not conscious of any literature that has had such effect upon poor me as that first number'. Initially Hughes painted in the spirit of Millais and his first PR work was Ophelia (Manchester City Art Gallery), exhibited at the Royal Academy of 1852. In 1854 Millais chose Hughes to model for the head of The Proscribed Royalist His career peaked in the 1850s and 60s. He is noted for his lyrical delicacy of colour and drawing and Ruskin described April Love (1855-6, Tate Britain) as 'exquisite in every way' - the work was bought by William Morris. Other important works are The Long Engagement (c.1854-9)

Gerry had planned for the interview to be broadcast but a change of circumstance meant it was never transmitted. Martin Hutchinson was able to use soundbites from the interview in his Cult TV feature but here, for the first time, is a complete transcript of the interview: Arthur Provis - in conversation with Gerry Hughes Introduction by Gerry Hughes: With the revival of programmes like Thunderbirds and Stingray Twizzle Torchy the Battery Boy and Four Feather Falls We got friendly and we then formed a small production company to make commercials or whatever we could get. Roberta Leigh turned up one day and asked us to make a puppet film for her, called Twizzle . I think the budget was something like a thousand pounds for fifty-two episodes, so it gives you an idea of how crazy it was. I think we ended up making fifty quid out of it. But it gave us a lot of experience, and then we started to make another series, in conjunction with her - as a partner really - called Torchy the Battery Boy Twizzle Four Feather Falls GH: Now, that was financed by Granada Television.
