AL HANSEN'S HOME PAGE "LIKE MOST OF YOU GUYS" "I LOVE THIS COMPUTER!" This is the Hansen family. Cori,Tina and Al W e live in Granbury, a small tourist town in central Texas. There is a lake, formed by damming the Brazos river. With all the usual sports that go with it, skiing, fishing and now days the jet ski's are like water bugs. During the summer folks from all the neighboring larger cities come here on week ends to get away from the rat race. Many of them have second homes here. The town square has been restored and is like going back in time to the 1800's. On the square is an old Opera House that still puts on musical, comedy and dramatic shows year around. There is a sidewalk cafe, an Ice Cream store,where you can get a real chocolate shake and where the guys, young and old, gather to play their guitar's and banjo's on week ends. Beck and Al Hansen: Playing with Matches Art Beatus Gallery, Vancouver February 5-March 6 Al Hansen, John Lennon and Andy Warhol Photo: Valerie Herouvis Art Beatus Gallery, Vancouver February 5-March 6 - "Beck and Al Hansen: Playing with Matches" is an exhibition of collage, sculpture, photography, audio-video, intermedia poetry and "ephemera" curated by Wayne Baerwaldt of Winnipeg's Plug In Gallery. But more than this, it is a tribute to an under-recognized figure on the international art scene who made an enormous contribution to the movement known as Fluxus, and to his grandson, a Grammy Award-winning recording artist. Beck Hansen Photo: Valerie Herouvis With its roots in John Cage's ideas about chance and indeterminacy as conditions for the creation of art and Marcel Duchamp's ideas about art as a concept rather than an object, Fluxus was an anti-art movement originating in the 1960s. Al Hansen's early Venus collages of found materials like Hershey bar wrappers and his work with discarded cigarette butts were instrumental in creating a signature style for him. Like his grandfather Al Hansen, Beck shares an attraction to collage and found materials - although his medium is often music and his "samplings" take the form of appropriations from the music-video culture.

News Releases Playing With Matches January 19th, 1999 Vancouver, B.C. From February 5 to March 6, 1998, Art Beatus will present an exhibition of over 130 collages, assemblages, photographs, drawings, audio loops and videos by both Beck and Al Hansen. Grammy award winner Beck Hansen, a songwriter, musician and artist, is best known for his critically acclaimed 1996 pop album, Odelay and his most recent release, Mutations. Al Hansen, his grandfather, gained fame in the 1960s as the creator of Happenings while based in New York. In addition to his performance art pieces Al Hansen is also known for his witty Goddess Venus collages composed of refuse such as cigarette butts, burnt matches, Hershey bar wrappers and other detritus. Al Hansen passed away in 1995 at the age of 68 in Cologne, Germany, where he had been living and working for the last fifteen years of his life. In the 1980s and early '90s, the Hansens shared an informal exchange of ideas and notes on artmaking. Beck Hansen also made a number of trips to Europe in order to travel with his grandfather. This dialogue acted as a catalyst for the development of their respective, overlapping engagements with art and sound. Each had already explored the connections between the two disciplines. They concluded that art and sound/music were not separate entities in a media-saturated world, and that the mixing and sampling of media could be both subject matter and medium. Curated by Wayne Baerwaldt of Plug In Inc in Winnipeg, this touring exhibition was first presented at the Santa Monica Museum Of Art in 1998, for the inauguration of their new exhibition space, and more recently opened the fall exhibition season at Thread Waxing Space in New York and at Plug In Inc in Winnipeg. After the Vancouver stop, the exhibition travels to Tokyo, Nagoya, Pittsburgh, Banff, Kingston and other cities through 2000.

We propose an index of climate change based on practical climate indicators such as heating degree days and the frequency of intense precipitation. We find that in most regions the index is positive, the sense predicted to accompany global warming. In a few regions, especially in Asia and western North America, the index indicates that climate change should be apparent already, but in most places climate trends are too small too stand out above year-to-year variability. The climate index is strongly correlated with global surface temperature, which has increased as rapidly as projected by climate modelers in the 1980s. We argue that the global area with obvious global change will increase notably in the next few years. But we show that the growth rate of greenhouse gas climate forcing has declined in recent years, and thus there is an opportunity to keep climate change in the 21st century less than "business-as-usual" scenarios.
