Paul Gauguin of 2
Born 1848, Died 1903
Painter, Draftsman
French
May the day come soon when I'll be myself in the woods of an ocean island! To live there in ecstasy, calmness and art. . . . There in Tahiti I shall be able to listen to the sweet murmuring music of my heart's beating in the silence of the beautiful tropical nights. Writing to his wife in 1887, Paul Gauguin expressed his desire to seek an earthly paradise in the South Seas. He arrived in Tahiti in 1891. While painting idealized visions of Polynesian culture, he relied on the Tahitians to provide him with food, models, and female companionship. Gauguin remained in Tahiti for two years, producing sculptures, woodcuts , and images of young women in Edenic landscapes. Gauguin first became enthusiastic about painting in the 1860s. By 1874 he was working with Camille Pisarro, who drew him into the Impressionist circle. Quickly abandoning Impressionism, he began using simplified lines and recurring shapes, covering the picture surface with large areas of flat color bounded by clearly marked lines. In the fall of 1888, Gauguin joined Vincent van Gogh in Arles, but the two quickly parted ways. Gauguin abandoned Europe permanently in 1895, having failed to sell many of the works from his first Tahitian excursion. He died in the Marquesas Islands in 1903.

On-Line Art Medium Art Art Form Oil on wood Keywords AIDS Art of Medicine Body Self-Image Depression ... Sexuality Summary Dividing the background expanse of red from yellow, and surrounded by a halo, three applesgreen, red, and purple, four yellow papyrus blossoms, and a snake held between the fingers of the artist's hand, a disembodied head appears caricature-like in this self-portrait. Commentary Ironic, perhaps deliberately humorous, this self-portrait is a symbolist's delight. Is the artist viewing himself as hero, seer, magician, tempter, Christ, Satan, betrayed lover, or jokester? Various title changes reflect the interest in iconography: "Portrait-charge de l'auteur," "unkind character sketch," "L'Alpha et l'omega," "Portrait a l'aureole et au serpent" (Maurice Malingue, "Du nouveau sur Gauguin," L'Oeil , July-August 1959, pp. 35, 38; referenced in The Art of Paul Gauguin, p. 165). The hieroglyphs and colors are suggestive of the heat and light of creation, hell fire, sexual allusions and perhaps the artist's jealousy.

      INTRODUCTION
The following images are accompanied by excerpts of letters written by Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh between 1887 and 1889. The two artists wrote often to one another, friends, and relatives. Van Gogh's most frequent correspondent was his brother Theo, an art dealer in Paris in the late 1880s. The quotations reveal that both men were avid chroniclers of the subjects they painted: peasants, townspeople, landscapes, and houses. The painters' candid remarks about their own canvases, most of which had either just been completed or were still in progress, offer unique perspectives on the Arles period. They also refer to a number of works painted before and after the artists' time together.
Van Gogh and Gauguin: The Studio of the South has been organized by The Art Institute of Chicago and the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam. This exhibition is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.
Van Gogh and Gauguin: The Studio of the South is part of the "Ameritech Exhibition Series" made possible through a grant from the Ameritech Foundation.

  • Paul Gauguin's erotic life He was cruel to his wife, drove van Gogh mad and delighted in impregnating women. The author of a Gauguin biography talks about why she loves his art anyway. By David Bowman Although Paul Gauguin has been dead for nearly a century, last fall he should have seduced us moderns anew with his translucent paintings. The Art Institute of Chicago had a brilliant show displaying the work of Gauguin and his on-again/off-again buddy Vincent van Gogh. Simultaneously, art historian Nancy Mowll Mathews' "Paul Gauguin: An Erotic Life" was published a scholarly, but breathy, biography that traced the bisexual urges and actual consummations inherent in both Gauguin's art and life, as well as exploring nan Gogh's unconsummated desire for Gauguin. Great art and steamy sex what more could one ask for? But then bin Laden brought down the World Trade Center and the cultural impact of the Chicago show was greatly dampened. This summer, however, Gauguin has a second chance to seduce us at the Metropolitan Art Museum in Manhattan. "Gauguin in New York Collections: The Lure of the Exotic" displays many of the primary paintings of Gauguin's career along with little-seen drawings and sculptures. Because we were interested in the "The Lure of the Erotic," we discussed Gauguin's possibly monstrous sexuality with biographer Nancy Mowll Mathews.

(37.1 x 13.4 x 10.8 cm) Museum purchase with funds provided by Smithsonian Collections Acquisition Program, 1981 (81.1) In addition to his vividly colored paintings, Paul Gauguin created sculptures using a variety of materials. Rejecting traditional European methods of marble carving and bronze casting, he favored ceramics and wood. In these media he daringly synthesized ideas from sources as diverse as Breton folk art, Japanese woodcuts, Buddhist sculpture, pre-Columbian pottery, and Oceanic mythology. Gauguin wanted to present imaginative, evocative images that would transcend the limitations of any one culture. Made soon after the artist arrived in Tahiti in 1891, Hina with Two Attendants features the Polynesian goddess of the moon. Because Tahitian religious art had been destroyed decades earlier by missionaries, Gauguin invented Hina's appearance. Her facial features were inspired by Tahitian women, while the body proportions and pose were adapted from photographs of Buddhist temple art in Borobudur, Java. When Gauguin's sculptures were exhibited in Paris in 1906, their hybrid imagery and primitivist carving style inspired many other artists, from German Expressionists to Pablo Picasso, Constantin Brancusi, and Amedeo Modigliani.

Two years later illness forced him to return to Paris, where, with the critic Charles Morice, he began Noa Noa, a book about Tahiti. Gauguin was able to return to Tahiti in 1895. He unsuccessfully attempted suicide in January 1898, not long after completing his mural-sized painting Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?
