FICHA Nacionalidad: Italia Vicchio di Mugello (h. 1390) - Roma (1455) Estilo: Renacimiento Italiano Quattrocento Escuela Italiana Vasari , donde se menciona su estudio y admiración por Masaccio , podremos confirmar una clara influencia de la vía del arte-conocimiento en sus primeras obras. A esta fuente de inspiración se suman los ecos recibidos de Gentile da Fabriano Anunciación del Museo del Prado como en los numerosos encargos recibidos del círculo social que rodeaba a los dominicos Observantes. En 1437 comenzó una nueva orientación productiva en su arte, al dotar a sus principios doctrinales de un claro aire intimista y esencialista que aplicó a su obra de mayor envergadura, la decoración del convento de San Marcos, que había sido donado a los dominicos por el papa Eugenio IV. Con las obras de remodelación y ampliación del convento, el humanista y mecenas Cosme de Médicis, confió a Fra Angelico la realización pictórica del monasterio. El enorme encargo, que incluía las celdas de los frailes, numerosos claustros y el retablo para el altar mayor, hace indudable la colaboración de un taller personal que siguiese las normas volumétricas y espaciales que Fra Angelico captaba de las nuevas corrientes renacentistas . Gracias a su buena relación con el papa Eugenio IV pudo trabajar en la basílica de San Pedro de El Vaticano desde 1445, primero decorando la capilla del Santísimo Sacramento, desaparecida durante el pontificado de Pablo III, y más tarde, por encargo de su sucesor Nicolás V, continuará pintando en colaboración con

F ra Angelico, Beato Fra Angelico, que durante una residencia en Foligno quedó bajo la influencia de Giotto, pronto se graduó de la iluminación de misales y libros de coro a la destacable labor de pintor de imágenes religiosas, que glorificaron la original naturalidad de sus tipos con peculiar y piadoso misticismo. Estaba convencido que para retratar a Cristo, uno necesitaba ser como Cristo, y Vasari decía que él oraba antes de comenzar sus pinturas. Su equipamiento técnico era muy sutil, como lo debía ser para un artista con sus orígenes, su obra era más bien sutilmente seca y dura. Su espíritu sin embargo glorificaba sus pinturas. Saints O'the Day March 18 Blessed Fra Angelico, OP (PC) Born in Mugello near Florence, Italy, in 1386 or 1387; died in Rome, Italy, in 1455. Guido da Vicchio's innate talent for art was supplemented by the natural beauty of his native Tuscany. He studied under several master artists when Italy was most conscious of the spirit of Giotto and Cimabue, and their influence was always to give a certain unearthly aspect to his paintings. When he was still quite young, and already a recognized artist, he entered the Dominican monastery at Fiesole with his brother Benedetto in 1407. It is a tribute to the ability and sanctity of both brothers that their names stand out in such distinguished company, for some of the greatest men of the order were housed in the same priory: Blesseds John Dominici Peter Capucci , and Lawrence of Ripafratta (f.d. September 28), and St. Antoninus of Florence . The latter, when he was appointed archbishop, was to commission some of the two artists' finest work. Few personal details are known about Brother John of the Angels, who is known as Fra Angelico in secular history. He was a priest. His painting in Florence was sufficiently well-known and admired to merit his being called to Rome to decorate the Chapel of Nicholas V at the Vatican. In 1449, he was appointed prior of San Marco, which he decorated with his wonderful paintings, and held that office for three years. He may have been recalled to Rome in 1454; he died there in 1455 at the Dominican friary of La Minerva. In much the same way as

Angelico, Fra Angelico, Fra (Guido di Pietro) (c. 1400-55). Florentine painter, a Dominican friar. Although in popular tradition he has been seen as `not an artist properly so-called but an inspired saint' (Ruskin), Angelico was in fact a highly professional artist, who was in touch with the most advanced developments in contemporary Florentine art and in later life travelled extensively for prestigious commissions. He probably began his career as a manuscript illuminator, and his early paintings are strongly influenced by International Gothic . But even in the most lavishly decorative of them all the Annunciation in the Diocesan Museum in Cortona Masaccio's incluence is evident in the insistent perspective of the architecture. For most of his career Angelico was based in S. Domenico in Fiesole (he became Prior there in 1450), but his most famous works were painted at S. Marco in Florence (now an Angelico museum), a Sylvestrine monastry which was taken over by his Order in 1436. He and his assistants painted about fifty frescos in the friary (c.1438-45) that are at once the expression of and a guide to the spiritual life of the community. Many of the frescos are in the friars' cells and were intended as aids to devotion; with their immaculate coloring, their economy in drawing and composition, and their freedom from the accidents of time and place, they attain a sense of blissful serenity. In the last decade of his life Angelico also worked in Orvieto and Perugia, and most importantly in Rome, where he frescoed the private chapel of Pope Nicholas V in the Vatican with

Guido, o Guidolino di Pietro, divenuto in seguito frate Giovanni Angelico da Fiesole, nacque a Vicchio di Mugello nel 1387. Nel 1417, ancora laico, svolgeva già l'attività di pittore. Nel 1423 passò nel Convento di San Domenico a Fiesole, prendendo il nome di Fra' Giovanni, e vi rimase fino al 1437 circa. Da quella data risulta presente nel convento di San Marco a Firenze, dove si era ritirato anche suo fratello. Dopo una fervida produzione pittorica, costituita da immagini sacre distribuite nelle varie chiese fiorentine e altre tavole destinate alla devozione privata, nel 1433 arrivò per l'artista la grande commissione del tabernacolo dell'Arte dei Lanaioli. A seguito del passaggio dai Silvestrini ai Domenicani nel convento di San Marco a Firenze, Fra' Angelico, assieme a molti collaboratori, affrescò la nuova sede conventuale seguendo la tradizione domenicana, che voleva i conventi interamente decorati da pitture. L'intero ciclo, compresa la Pala per la chiesa, è databile dal 1438 al 1446. Nel 1446 Papa Eugenio IV chiamò Beato Angelico a Roma, dove gli commissionò una cappella in Vaticano, oggi scomparsa. Il successore, Niccolò V, affidò all'artista i dipinti per la Cappella Niccolina e lo Studio Pontificio. Durante l'estate del 1447 il frate si ritirò ad Orvieto dove iniziò la Cappella di San Birzio nel Duomo, interrotta e proseguita dal Signorelli. Tornò in Toscana nel 1449-51 e nel 1452 fu coinvolto nel progetto degli affreschi del Duomo di Prato, che verranno invece eseguiti da Filippo Lippi. Nel 1455 morì nel convento domenicano di Santa Maria sopra Minerva, vicino Roma.
