Fra Angelico
On account of the struggle for the pontifical throne between Gregory XII , Benedict XIII, and Alexander V, Fra Giovanni and his brother, being adherents of the first named, had in 1409 to leave Fiesole, taking refuge in the convent of their order established at Foligno in Umbria. The pest devastating that place in 1414, the brothers went to Cortona, where they spent four years and then returned to Fiesole. There Fra Angelico remained for sixteen years. He was then invited to Florence to decorate the new Convent of San Marco which had just been allotted to his order, and of which Cosmo de' Medici was a munificent patron. At Cortona are found some of his best pictures. It was at Florence, however, where he spent nine years, that he painted his most important works. In 1445, Pope Eugenius IV invited Fra Angelico to Rome and gave him work to do in the Vatican, where he painted for him and for his successor, Pope Nicholas V , the frescoes of two chapels. That of the cappella del Sacramento , in the Vatican, was destroyed later by Paul III. Eugenius IV than asked him to go to Orvieto to work in the chapel of the Madonna

    Fra Angelico (Guido di Pietro)
Early Renaissance Fra Angelico was one of the most celebrated artists of the early Renaissance. A Dominican monk, based in Florence, all his art was religious. Though nothing is known of his training he appeared to clearly understand the innovations of Masaccio. This is evident in an early painting, Annunciation (Cortona, Diocesan Museum), probably dating from the late I420s, where the architecture of the loggia, which has a single vanishing point. The Coronation of the Virgin was painted in the 1430s for his own convent at San Domenico in Fiesole. It shows a clarity of colour in the Gothic tradition. An understanding of Masaccio's frescoes is displayed in Crucifixion with St. Dominic . The simple humanity of Christ, in extremis, with his head sunk is reminiscent of Masaccio's alterpiece at Pisa. In 1438 Angelico and his assistants began his greatest work, the decoration of his monastery in Florence, now a superb museum dedicated to his work. In scenes intended for meditation (many are in the monks' cells) he achieved a sense of blissful, radiant simplicity and great emotional directness.

FRA GIOVANNI ANGELICO of Fiesole, known in the world as Guido, was
no less excellent as a painter and illuminator than as a monk of the
highest character, and in both capacities he deserves to be most
honourably remembered. Although he might easily have led a secular
life and gained what he liked at art beyond what he possessed, for he
showed great skill while still quite young, yet, being naturally quiet
and modest, he entered the order of Friars Preachers chiefly for the sake of (1) In I497. his soul and for his peace of mind. For although it is possible for men of all conditions to serve God, yet some think that they can win salvation more easily in a monastery than in the world. Although this course is well enough for good men, yet it leads to a wretched and unhappy existence for those who become monks for other ends. There are some choir books illuminated by Fra Giovanni in his convent of S. Marco at Florence of indescrib° able beauty, and others like them in S. Domenico at Fiesole, executed with extraordinary

Blessed Fra Angelico, OP (PC)
March 18
Born in Mugello near Florence, Italy, in 1386 or 1387; died in Rome, Italy, in 1455. Guido da Vicchio's innate talent for art was supplemented by the natural beauty of his native Tuscany. He studied under several master artists when Italy was most conscious of the spirit of Giotto and Cimabue, and their influence was always to give a certain unearthly aspect to his paintings. When he was still quite young, and already a recognized artist, he entered the Dominican monastery at Fiesole with his brother Benedetto in 1407. It is a tribute to the ability and sanctity of both brothers that their names stand out in such distinguished company, for some of the greatest men of the order were housed in the same priory: Blesseds John Dominici Peter Capucci , and Lawrence of Ripafratta (f.d. September 28), and St. Antoninus of Florence . The latter, when he was appointed archbishop, was to commission some of the two artists' finest work. Few personal details are known about Brother John of the Angels, who is known as Fra Angelico in secular history. He was a priest. His painting in Florence was sufficiently well-known and admired to merit his being called to Rome to decorate the Chapel of Nicholas V at the Vatican. In 1449, he was appointed prior of San Marco, which he decorated with his wonderful paintings, and held that office for three years. He may have been recalled to Rome in 1454; he died there in 1455 at the Dominican friary of La Minerva. In much the same way as

Angelico, Fra (Guido di Pietro) (c. 1400-55). Florentine painter, a Dominican friar. Although in popular tradition he has been seen as `not an artist properly so-called but an inspired saint' (Ruskin), Angelico was in fact a highly professional artist, who was in touch with the most advanced developments in contemporary Florentine art and in later life travelled extensively for prestigious commissions. He probably began his career as a manuscript illuminator, and his early paintings are strongly influenced by International Gothic . But even in the most lavishly decorative of them all the Annunciation in the Diocesan Museum in Cortona Masaccio's incluence is evident in the insistent perspective of the architecture. For most of his career Angelico was based in S. Domenico in Fiesole (he became Prior there in 1450), but his most famous works were painted at S. Marco in Florence (now an Angelico museum), a Sylvestrine monastry which was taken over by his Order in 1436. He and his assistants painted about fifty frescos in the friary (c.1438-45) that are at once the expression of and a guide to the spiritual life of the community. Many of the frescos are in the friars' cells and were intended as aids to devotion; with their immaculate coloring, their economy in drawing and composition, and their freedom from the accidents of time and place, they attain a sense of blissful serenity. In the last decade of his life Angelico also worked in Orvieto and Perugia, and most importantly in Rome, where he frescoed the private chapel of Pope Nicholas V in the Vatican with

ANGELICO, Fra
(b. ca. 1400, Vicchio nell Mugello, d. 1455, Roma)
Biography
In Fiesole Originally named Guido di Pietro, Angelico was born in Vicchio, Tuscany. He entered a Dominican convent in Fiesole in 1418 and became a friar using the name Giovanni da Fiesole. Although his teacher is unknown, he apparently began his career as an illuminator of missals and other religious books. He began to paint altarpieces and other panels; among his important early works are the Madonna of the Star (1428?-1433, San Marco, Florence) and Christ in Glory Surrounded by Saints and Angels (National Gallery, London), which depicts more than 250 distinct figures. Among other works of that period are two of the Coronation of the Virgin (San Marco and Louvre, Paris) and The Deposition and The Last Judgment (San Marco). His mature style is first seen in the Madonna of the Linen Weavers (1433, San Marco), which features a border with 12 music-making angels. In Florence and Rome In 1436 some of the Dominican friars of Fiesole moved to the convent of San Marco in Florence, which had recently been rebuilt by Michelozzo.

The convent of San Marco was taken over by his Order in 1436, and he was commissioned to decoarte the friar's cells with frescoes painted directly on to wet plaster walls. These were intended to stimulate prayer and meditation rather than to be a factual record of the Biblical story. He wanted to represent the sacredness of Christ in all its glory and simplicity; although he understood the principles of perspective, as seen here in the rendition of the tomb door, these were often sacrificed for a simple style. In the nineteenth century Angelico's painting captured the imagination of the Pre-Raphaelites, who saw in them the charm of a pure faith. In this fresco , Christ appears to Mary Magdalene. She has been weeping after discovering that his tomb is empty. A figure appears. At first she mistakes him for a gardener as he is carrying a hoe. Suddenly realizing who it is, she goes to embrace him. But he moves away, telling her not to touch him - literally 'Noli Me Tangere'." Entrance to the museum can be found on the right of the church . Cosimo the Elder commissioned Michelozzo , his trusted architect, to carry out the restoration of the Bell Tower and the crumbling Monastery of the abolished order of Silvestrini Friars. Angelico (Guido o Guidolino di Pietro, Vicchio di Mugello 1387 - Rome 1455), a friar from the Monastery of San Domenico , moved in here with his brothers and worked on the famous frescoes of the 42 cells, the cloister, the chapter house and the first floor corridors from 1438 to 1446.
This was where Lorenzo the Magnificent, later to be his bitter foe, sent Savonarola ,to act as Father Superior, until his martyrdom at the stake - after Lorenzo's death - in Piazza della Signoria
Bartolomeo della Porta, Renaissance painter and follower of Savonarola , also joined the Dominican community here.
The building came under the control of the Government in 1860 and was opened to the public in 1869. The museum dedicated to Fra Angelico was opened in the 1920's with the help of various financial sources.
The First Cloister (of Sant'Antonino) is a perfect example of Renaissance monastic architecture, decorated with flower beds and a majestic Cedar of Lebanon. It contains 17th century frescoes and paintings by Fra Angelico, whose finest paintings on wood - the famous Annalena Altarpiece, the St. Mark Altarpiece, the intense Deposition of the Holy Trinity and the Last Judgement - can be found in the ancient Pilgrims' Hospice. The Hospice also contains the Tabernacle of the Flax Dressers (1433), carved by Ghiberti and painted by Fra Angelico.
