Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck was born in Kiel, Germany, on April 23, 1858, the son of Julius Wilhelm and Emma ( Patzig) Planck. His father was Professor of Constitutional Law in the University of Kiel , and later in Planck studied at the Universities of Munich and Berlin, where his teachers included Kirchhoff and Helmholtz, and received his doctorate of philosophy at Munich in 1879. He was Privatdozent in Munich from 1880 to 1885, then Associate Professor of Theoretical Physics at Kiel until 1889, in which year he succeeded Kirchhoff as Professor at Berlin University, where he remained until his retirement in 1926. Afterwards he became President of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society for the Promotion of Science, a post he held until 1937. The Prussian Academy of Sciences appointed him a member in 1894 and Permanent Secretary in 1912. Planck's earliest work was on the subject of thermodynamics, an interest he acquired from his studies under Kirchhoff, whom he greatly admired, and very considerably from reading R. Clausius' publications. He published papers on entropy, on thermoelectric ity and on the theory of dilute solutions.

Ernst, Max
German-born artist and a founder of Dada and surrealism . Noted for his use of frottage and collage, he explored the subconscious through his stylistically varied works, such as the painting Old Man, Woman, and Flower (1923). Ernst, Max Dada . . .a Dada exhibition. Another one! What's the matter with everyone wanting to make a museum piece out of Dada? Dada was a bomb . . . can you imagine anyone, around half a century after a bomb explodes, wanting to collect the pieces, sticking it together and displaying it?
Max Ernst (1891-1976), German painter, poet. Quoted in: C. W. E. Bigsby, Dada and Surrealism, ch. 1 (1972).
"Art is not made by one artist but by several. It is to a great degree the product of their exchange of ideas with one another." - Max Ernst

collage
1.a. An artistic composition of materials and objects pasted over a surface, often with unifying lines and color. b. The art of creating such compositions.
2.An assemblage of diverse elements: a collage of conflicting memories verb
collaged, collaging, collages verb, transitive
To paste (diverse materials) over a surface, thereby creating an artistic product. verb, intransitive
To create such an artistic product. [French, from coller, to glue, from colle, glue, from Vulgar Latin *colla, from Greek kolla.]
Collage Collage, an artwork made by pasting together heterogeneous materials. The decisive and characteristic difference between the technique of collage (from French, coller, "to paste") and painting is that in painting the visual impression is built up by composition of color and line, whereas in collage, bits of newspaper, labels, buttons, and chickenwire, to mention only a few materials, are attached, ready-made , to the surface. The French painter Georges Braque and Spanish artist Pablo Picasso made collages for cubist works in the early 20th century. American pop art of the 1960s introduced the use of large objects, such as pieces of sheet metal, machine parts, parts from automobiles, and wooden rafters.

Max Ernst was born on 2 April 1891, in Bruhl, Germany. He enrolled in the University at Bonn in 1909 to study philosophy, but soon abandoned this pursuit to concentrate on art. At this time he was interested in psychology and the art of the mentally ill. In 1911 Ernst became a friend of August Macke and joined the Rheinische Expressionisten group in Bonn. Ernst showed for the first time in 1912 at the Galerie Feldman in Cologne. At the Sonderbund exhibition of that year in Cologne he saw the work of Paul Cézanne, Edvard Munch, Pablo Picasso , and Vincent van Gogh. In 1913 he met Guillaume Apollinaire and Robert Delaunay and traveled to Paris. Ernst participated that same year in the Erste deutsche Herbstsalon. In 1914 he met Jean Arp, who was to become a lifelong friend. Despite military service throughout World War I, Ernst was able to continue painting and to exhibit in Berlin at Der Sturm in 1916. He returned to Cologne in 1918. The next year he produced his first collages and founded the short-lived Cologne Dada movement with Johannes Theodor Baargeld; they were joined by Arp and others. In 1921 Ernst exhibited for the first time in Paris at the Galerie au Sans Pareil. He was involved in Surrealist activities in the early 1920s with Paul Eluard and André Breton. In 1925 Ernst executed his first frottages ; a series of frottages was published in his book Histoire Naturelle in 1926. He collaborated with

L'anno successivo crea i primi

Ernst, Max
Pronunciation Key
Ernst, Max , German painter. After World War I, Ernst joined the Dada movement in Paris and then became a founder of surrealism . Apart from the medium of collage , Ernst developed other devices to express his fantastic vision. In frottage he rubbed black chalk on paper held against various materials such as leaves, wood, and fabrics to achieve bizarre effects. A note of whimsy often characterizes his dreamlike landscapes. Other works reveal an allegorical imagination. Two Children Are Threatened by a Nightingale and several other works are in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Alberto Giacometti e Max Ernst. Questi scambi generano nuovi stimoli in entrambi.
