Courbet, Gustave (1819-1877) Französischer Maler, mit Honoré Daumier und Jean François Millet Begründer der Tradition des Realismus in der französischen Malerei des 19. Jahrhunderts. Courbet stammte aus bäuerlichen Verhältnissen in der Nähe von Besançon Ornans, Franche-Comté ). Nach kurzem Akademiebesuch in Besançon übersiedelte er 1840 nach Paris und trieb dort autodidaktisch Studien, vornehmlich durch Kopieren niederländischer und venezianischer Malerei im Louvre Ab 1844 war Courbet beim prominenten Pariser Herbstsalon vertreten. Nachdem bereits 1849 sein Gemälde "Die Steinklopfer" (ehemals Gemäldegalerie , Dresden , 1945 zerstört), eine realistisch-kritische Darstellung von Straßenbauarbeitern, für Aufsehen gesorgt hatte, provozierte das Monumentalgemälde "Begräbnis in Ornans" Musée d'Orsay , Paris ) einen Skandal. Courbets wirklichkeitsgetreue Wiedergabe von Bauern und Geistlichkeit widersprach dem herrschenden Prinzip einer idealisierenden Darstellung und wurde allgemein als Affront aufgefaßt. Die in der Folge entstandenen Seestücke Landschaften Still-Leben Genreszenen und Akte wirkten gleichermaßen provokant auf die Zeitgenossen.

Ab 1861 konnte er dank guter Beziehungen zur Fam. Bovy und zum Maler Barthélemy Menn seine Werke in Genf ausstellen. Aufgrund seines polit. Engagements und der Verfolgung durch den franz. Staat nach der Pariser Kommune 1871 flüchtete er im Juli 1873 in die Schweiz. Er liess sich in La Tour-de-Peilz nieder und malte Ansichten des Genfersees und einige Porträts (Henri Rochefort, Louis Ruchonnet). 1875 schuf er eine die Freiheit darstellende Büste; Kopien stehen heute auf öffentl.
