This page attempts to begin to pull together information about the white American Hemingway line that is thought to have originated in South Carolina, with many descendants in Mississippi and South Carolina. (There is information about black Hemingway families from the same area here .) As of January, 2000, it has been establishied that for the largest documented line, the original settlers South Carolina settlers were the immigrants Thomas and William , brothers who arrived from Yorkshire and settled in Horry Co., SC. (No connection to the early Virginia Hemingway family has been established; some thought there might be a connection.) Through the combined efforts of Eleanor Clyburn Wicker of Mississippi and Joe Hemingway of North Carolina and with much assistance and research by Ron Hemingway of Yorkshire, much about the English origins of Thomas and William was uncovered in 1999, and work continues in 2000. Two other William Hemingways, not thought related to brothers Thomas and William, were also early South Carolina settlers: William Hemingway from Dewsbury, Yorkshire, England to Union Co., South Carolina in October 1793

WILKIE COLLINS AND CHARLES DICKENS
Wilkie Collins met Charles Dickens on 12 March 1851 (1) after accepting the part of Smart the valet in the amateur production of Bulwer Lytton's play Not So Bad as We Seem. Although Dickens was twelve years older and an established author and public figure, a lifelong friendship followed. They dined together, took holidays together, and visited the less reputable parts of London and Paris together. They also worked together. For more than five years Collins was employed on Household Words and then All The Year Round and collaborated with Dickens on several Christmas issues of both publications, including No Thoroughfare Collins's letters to Dickens do not survive and there are two main sources for what he thought of his friend - prefaces to his books and notes he wrote on his copy of John Forster's biography of Dickens (3). Hide and Seek in 1854. He wrote "To Charles Dickens this story is inscribed as a token of admiration and affection, by his friend, the author" (4). Dickens replied to Collins's letter seeking permission to dedicate the book to him "I shall be delighted to see my name in that good company" (5). Dickens loved Hide and Seek , writing to his sister-in-law Georgina Hogarth "I think it is far and away the cleverest novel I have ever seen written by a new hand. It is much beyond Mrs Gaskell and is in some respects masterly..." (6). Seven years later in a new preface to a new edition Collins, by then as famous as Dickens, referred to "...the favourable opinions which many of my brother writers - and notably the great writer to whom 'Hide and Seek' is dedicated - expressed of these pages when I originally wrote them." (7)

By 1855 Perugini had made the acquaintance of the great British Neo-Classical artist Frederic Leighton who was traveling and studying on the Continent. A strong friendship developed between the two and Leighton took the young artist under his wing… giving him great encouragement and financial support. By the late 1850’s Perugini left for England – accompanied by Leighton. Upon his arrival he worked in Leighton’s studio, but soon set up his own atelier and by 1863, the year he exhibited his first work at the Royal Academy, he was living and working at 13 Sutherland Terrace. Through Leighton’s social connections the young Italian artist gained access to many of the wealthy patrons in England, enabling him to achieve great financial success. His works were admired and collected by many and he received favorable remarks from the critics.

In 1860 Collins had referred to Dickens in the preface to the three volume edition of The Woman in White. In later years, shortly before Dickens's death, relationships between them were, for a while, strained. One possible reason is that Wilkie's brother Charles Allston Collins had married Dickens's daughter Kate. Charles was a sickly man to whom Dickens took a growing dislike as they both headed towards the grave. After Dickens's death our knowledge of Collins's feelings about him come from some marginal notes he made in Forster's The Life of Charles Dickens. They were discovered when Collins's library was sold after his death in 1889.

The Children of Charles Dickens Home Learn More His Life Noteworthy Events What We Can Learn From Charles Dickens His Childhood ... His Friends Charles and Catherine Dickens had ten children. There is circumstantial evidence that Dickens and Ellen Ternan had a child that died shortly after being born. However this has never been proven. Charles Culliford Boz Dickens (1837-1896) Charles was known as Charley within the family. Charley married Bessie Evans despite the fact that his father had disagreements with Bessie's father. Charley was involved in banking and business. In 1868 he went into bankruptcy and was then hired by his father to work at All The Year Round. He bought Gad's Hill Place after his father died, but later gave it up because of his own failing health. Mary Dickens (1838-1896) - Mary was named after her mother's sister who died in 1837. After her father's death she lived with her aunt, Georgina. Mary went on to write My Father as I Recall Him Kate Macready Dickens (1839-1929) - When Dickens and Catherine separated Kate was the only child to stand up to Dickens and side with Catherine. That shouldn't have been a surprise to Dickens as Kate had been called "Lucifer Box" within the family because of her fiery temper. She married Charles Allston Collins and after his death she married Carlo Perugini.

Victorian Art in Britain Charles Edward Perugini
I This obituary of Charles Edward Perugini appeared in The Times on Monday 23 rd December 1918. It does, at least, give some more information about him. Death of Mr Perugini The death of Mr Charles Edward Perugini which occurred in London yesterday, removes the last of the inner circle of intimates which included Leighton and Millais and formerly Fred Walker among the art-representatives of the recent past. He was born in Naples on September 1 st 1839, during a short visit to that city by his Italian parents, who had for many years previously been resident in England, and he was still an infant when he was brought to this country, where in due course he became naturalized. Eleven years later Horace Vernet on seeing the boy’s drawings, recommended that he should study in Italy. He was successively the pupil of Bonolis and Mancinelli under whose severe training he became proficient in all the allied arts and architecture. Mr Perugini was also an occasional portrait painter; his likeness of John Forster, Charles Dickens’s biographer was re-exhibited not long since on the walls of the Victoria and Albert Museum. Although an Englishman in thought and character, Perugini showed himself in his art an inheritor of the tradition of Raphael, or rather of Carlo Dolci.

The New Magdalen
by Wilkie Collins
To The Memory Of Charles Allston Collins.
(9th April, 1873.)
First Scene. The Cottage on the Frontier. Preamble. THE place is France. The time is autumn, in the year eighteen hundred and seventythe year of the war between France and Germany. The persons are, Captain Arnault, of the French army; Surgeon Surville, of the French ambulance; Surgeon Wetzel, of the German army; Mercy Merrick, attached as nurse to the French ambulance; and Grace Roseberry, a traveling lady on her way to England.
Chapter I. The Two Women. IT was a dark night. The rain was pouring in torrents. Late in the evening a skirmishing party of the French and a skirmishing party of the Germans had met, by accident, near the little village of Lagrange, close to the German frontier. In the struggle that followed, the French had (for once) got the better of the enemy. For the time, at least, a few hundreds out of the host of the invaders had been forced back over the frontier. It was a trifling affair, occurring not long after the great German victory of Weissenbourg, and the newspapers took little or no notice of it. Still absorbed in his perusal of the dispatches, and now and then making notes of what he read by the help of writing materials placed at his side, Captain Arnault was interrupted by the appearance of an intruder in the room. Surgeon Surville, entering from the kitchen, drew aside the canvas screen, and approached the little round table at which his superior officer was sitting.
