So I say au revoir rather than Good bye. always very sincerely yours Charles Allston Collins James Thomas Fields was the editor of Atlantic Monthly from 1861 to 1871. He was in Europe in 1869 - Dickens wrote inviting him on 9 April - and after touring round London with Dickens he arrived at Gad's Hill Place, as his guest on June 2. Fields and his wife stayed for a few days, taking trips into the countryside and enjoying a large dinner party with so many guests some had to be accommodated in the inn over the road. Fields returned to Gad's Hill in October "Once more we recall a morning at Gad's Hill, a soft white haze over everything, and the yellow sun burning through. The birds were singing, and beauty and calm pervaded the whole scene" (1). It is likely that this letter refers to that visit rather than the one in June. The piece referred to in the letter as 'On Accident' was in fact published in

Charles Allston Collins a short Biography
http://web.ukonline.co.uk/wildbunch/collins.htm
Charles Allston Collins 1828-1873
Born in Hampstead, his father was the genre painter William Collins, and his older brother the novelist Wilkie Collins. The latter was a friend of Millais and introduced the pair in 1850 when they were both at the R.A. Schools. Millais and Collins spent the next summer painting together in Oxford, Millais on The Woodman's Daughter and Collins on Convent Thoughts, in the garden of the Clarendon Press. This painting reflected his somewhat aesthetic, introspective sensibilities. When Collinson withdrew from the Brotherhood, Millais wanted Collins to join in his place, but Deverell was chosen ahead of him by the other P.R.B. members. Millais refused to agree to Deverell's membership. The factions split Millais, Hunt, Rossetti, and Stephens wanted Collins - Woolner emphatically did not, and William Michael Rossetti sympathised with Woolner's view that Collins had not established himself as having any legitimate claim to be considered a member. Furthermore, he feared that the good relations between the Brotherhood members would be jeopardized by Collins's inclusion. In the event, nobody was allowed to replace Collinson. For a period, Collins fell in love with the rather serious-minded Maria Rossetti, but she wasn't interested in him. In the late 1850s he gave up painting for writing and in 1860 he married Kate, the daughter of Charles Dickens, for whom he subsequently did some illustration work. He died after a long illness in April, 1873.

Collins, Charles Allston
painter, writer england 25 Jan 1828, London: Hampstead - 9 Apr 1873
Grave location: London: Brompton Cemetery, West Brompton
Son of landscape painter William Collins RA and younger brother of writer Wilkie Collins. His paintings were conventional until in 1850 he changed his style under influence of his friend Millais. Without being a formal member of the Preraphaelite Brotherhood he was close to several members.
His most important painting is "Convent Thoughts", which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1851 along with paintings by Millais and Hunt. They were attacked savagely by the critics. John Ruskin wrote a letter to The Times (May 13th, 1851) in which he defended Collins. "Convent Thoughts" is now at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.
Charles had so many trouble finishing his paintings (caused by both mental and physical reasons) that in 1857 he decided to try his hand on writing instead. He published a novel, "The Bar Sinister", but he hardly managed to earn a living and the couple had to be supported financially by Dickens and his brother Wilkie.
The religious Collins married Kate, the daughter of Charles Dickens, who was a close friend of his worldy brother Wilkie. Clouds came over the marriage when Charles' health detoriated further and Dickens began to dislike him, probably because he was rumoured to have known to be impotent before he married. Kate confirmed towards the end of her life that 'he ought never to have married'. After a long struggle against cancer Charles died in 1873, surrounded by his half-finished paintings.

Charles Allston Collins (British, 1828-1873) Browse Paintings List Available Paintings View Available Prints Biography
Charles Allston Collins, son of the academician, William Collins (and brother of Wilkie Collins, the novelist) was a conventionally academic painter before his friendship with Millais in 1850 led him to change his style. Convent Thoughts , his most famous work, was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1851, where it shared in the general denunciation by the critics of all things Pre-Raphaelite. The Times wrote: We cannot censure at present as amply or as strongly as we desire to do, that strange disorder of the mind or the eyes, which continues to rage with unabated absurdity among a class of juvenile artists who style themselves the PRB. Collins' picture is typical of the early, gothic phase of the movement, and the religious piety of these works led many critics to accuse the painters of being Roman Catholic sympathizers. The mood of Convent Thoughts is certainly similar to Rossetti's early paintings, but the flowers and the garden reflect Millais' influence.

Click to view enlargement About the painting: The background of Convent Thoughts was begun in Botley in 1850 when Collins was visiting Oxford with Millais. According to a note by Thomas Combe (Oxford based patron of the Pre-Raphaelites) on the back, the flowers were painted in Combe's garden in Walton Street. The novice was added later, in London using a costume which William Holman Hunt had previously used in Claudio and Isabella . The sleeves, however, covered the essential missal which the novice holds. Collins admitted that he was tempted to cut the sleeves short: 'It is awkward', he wrote, 'in as much as part of the story depends on the hand and the book held in it'. The book, indeed, provides the key to the symbolism. The novice's index finger marks a page illustrating the Annunciation , the moment when the angel tells the Virgin that she has been set aside for special grace. She is surrounded by many different species of lily flowers, the Virgin's attribute, which also flank the picture on the frame, designed by Millais and inscribed 'Sicut Lilim', the opening words of a text from the Song of Solomon, conventionally thought to prefigure the Virgin of the New Testament: 'As the lily among Thorns, so is my love among the daughters'. The flower she holds, however, is a Passion Flower, symbol of the Crucifixion, to which her thoughts have turned. We know this as the missal is open at a picture of the Crucifixion.

Real name: Clairmont, Clara Mary Jane
Grave location: Firenze (tomb disappeared (bones reburied) )
Stepdaughter of the philosopher Willam Godwin and therefore stepsister of Mary Godwin. After a short romance with Lord Byron - whom she saw first as early as 1812 - she gave birth to his daughter Allegra after travelling through Europe in 1816 with Mary and her husband to be Percy Bysshe Shelley. She was also present during the night that Byron and Shelley told ghost stories, inspiring Mary Shelley to write her Frankenstein.
Claire agreed that Byron would take care of Allegra because her daughter would have better prospects that way and she surrendered her to him reluctantly. Allegra died in a convent a few few years later and Claire would hate the poet all her life, allthough many young children died in those years and it could hardly be called his fault.
After Shelley's death she went to Vienna in October 1822, where her brother Charles was living. She was very poor and became seriously ill, but she recoved anough to go to St. Petersburg, to become - Helped by her command of five languages - a paid companion for the daughters of Countess Zotoff in 1823. By the spring of 1824 she had become the governess of the children of the lawyer Zachar Nicolaivitch and his wife Marie Ivanovna in Moscow. Unfortunately, their daughter Dunia died in 1825.
Claire moved on to another family and on 27 December 1826 in Moscow there was talk about the nobleness of Lord Byron and in her diary she wrote:

http://www.wilkiecollins.demon.co.uk/wilkiefamily/family.htm
Wilkie's Family
Wilkie Collins came from a family of artists. His brother Charles Allston Collins was a close friend of the members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood - particularly John Everett Millais and Holman Hunt. Though never a full member, he exhibited twelve pictures in the Royal Academy and made his living for some years by painting and later by writing. Wilkie's father William Collins RA became an associate member of the Royal Academy in 1814 and a full member in 1820. He painted more than 200 works and was one of the most famous artists of his day with patrons among the wealthy and aristocracy. His mother Harriet Geddes also came from an artistic family. A diary of her domestic life in 1835 and another covering September 1836 to December 1837 exist. Harriet's younger sister, Margaret Carpenter , was a well known portrait painter.
