Of the French prose versions of the Historia de proeliis may be noticed the late romance, L'Hisloire du noble et vaillant roy Alixandre le Grant (1506). After an account of the ancient history of Macedonia and of the intrigue of Nectanebus we are told how Philip dies, and how Alexander subdues Rome and receives tribute from all European nations. He then makes his Persian expedition; the Indian campaign gives occasion for descriptions of all kinds of wonders. The conqueror visits a cannibal kingdom and finds many marvels in the palace of Porus, among them a vine with golden branches, emerald leaves and fruit of other precious stones. In one country he meets with women who, after the burial in the winter, become alive again in the spring full of youth and beauty. Having reached the ends of the earth and conquered all nations, he aspires to the dominion of the air. He obtains a magic glass, cage, yoked with eight griffins, flies through the clouds, and, thanks to enchanters who know the language of birds, geti information as to their manners and customs, and ultimately receives ^ their submission. The excessive heat of the upper regions compels him to descend, and he next visits the bottom of the sea in a kind of diving-bell. The fish crowd round him and pay homage. Alexander returns to Babylon, is crowned with much pomp and mass is celebrated. He dies by poison soon afterwards.

John White Alexander In 1891, Alexander moved to Paris and over the next ten years gained prominence as an exponent of the current Art Noveau trend. However this was only one of several influences that converged on him and other artists during these years. In the 1890s proponents of the so-called Aesthetic Movement decried the Ruskinian conviction that art must perform a moral and didactic function and instead asserted that art was autonomous and self-referential. Free of literary, narrative conventions, artists could favor mood over story and assert the formal, evocative properties of color and line for their own sake. This new freedom encouraged a shift in subject matter toward the representation of objects and figures that were simply beautiful in themselves. The culture of the 1890s, gritty and ugly as it appeared, produced such subject matter in abundance. The century's end had witnessed the explosive growth of commerce, industry, and urban concentration, contributing to the creation of great fortunes in few hands; it also contributed to a radical adjustment in the social roles of women of the upper and middle classes. Deprived of the centrally productive role they had previously performed in a rural society, women were now relegated to a decorative role, serving as beautiful symbols of male wealth and status. As such they were bountifully represented by artists, and their images were eagerly acquired by patrons. It is noteworthy that in the current exhibition of fifty-two paintings there are twenty-four representations of women, almost exclusively upper class, and only one male self-portrait.

The academy was too rigid for him, and he moved to Polling, Upper Bavaria, where a group of American students were studying under Frank Duveneck. A year later, he traveled with "Duveneck's Boys" to Florence and Venice. Alexander did admire Duveneck's work, shared a studio with him in Florence, and taught some of Duveneck's art classes. While Alexander was in Venice, he met James Abbott McNeill Whistler, who was most influential in the development of Alexander's painting. In 1881, Alexander returned to New York and became a successful portraitist while continuing his work at Harper's Weekly and teaching drawing at Princeton University. In 1890, he went with his wife and child to Paris, where they socialized with Whistler, Henry James, Stéphane Mallarmé, Auguste Rodin, Oscar Wilde, and Mrs. Jack Gardner. It was here that Alexander came into contact with the Symbolist and Art Nouveau movements, which influenced his characteristic style. His paintings of attenuated women, seen close up in serpentine poses became the hallmark of his work. He traveled back and forth between Paris and America and in 1901 returned to New York, where he was in great demand as a portrait painter. In 1905, he was commissioned to paint forty-eight murals for the new Carnegie Institute, a singular and highly profitable distinction.
