Keeping you up to speed with news and events from around the world. Front Page UK Europe International ... News Releases Storing carbon in soils good for agriculture and global warming Should France store carbon in agricultural soil to meet reduction targets for carbon dioxide emissions? A study commissioned by the French Ministry of Ecology and Sustainable Development failed to come up with a satisfactory answer – but found other benefits in soil carbon sequestration. The study by the French Agricultural Research Institute (INRA) found that while farm soil shows good potential to store carbon, its overall value as a sink for carbon emissions is not as significant when it comes to meeting Kyoto Protocol reduction targets. In terms of environmental benefits, says INRA, soil carbon sequestration should be evaluated according to its combined effects of abating greenhouse gas warming and improving the quality and sustainability of agricultural soil. Organic carbon can be stored for relatively long periods in soil, and represents a significant fraction of the planet’s total carbon. Some 1500 billion tonnes is estimated to be bound globally to soil - twice the amount present in the atmosphere. France could potentially store three million tonnes of carbon a year over a 20-year period in its soils, equivalent to 2% of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions, says INRA. But this would require “massive changes” in the way soil was managed, with longer periods of commitment by farmers to growing specific types of vegetation. In turn this would bring other benefits, such as reducing erosion and improving the quality of soils, says INRA.

CHAPTER 10 - AGRICULTURE AND SOILS I. World Food Problems A. Principal Objective of Agriculture - The principal objectives of modern agriculture are to cultivate the soil for increasing crop yields while protecting the land from erosion or misuse. An important requirement for nations is a periodic agricultural census and inventory. Such information permits the monitoring of current production and the prediction of crop yields, so that serious food shortages or distribution problems can be recognized in time and corrective action can be taken. B. Role of Remote Sensing - Because of the size, remoteness, diversity, variability, and vulnerability of the world’s crops, accurate information on production during and following the crop season is limited. Conventional, medium-scale aerial photographs have been used for decades in some regions for identification of major crops and monitoring of crop-area allotments. Such surveys also permit the identification of land characteristics, such as major soil types, drainage, and topographical relief patterns, as a basis for evaluating the best potential use of the land. The following applications have been made: Assessment of potentially arable lands Classification of agricultural lands Identification and distribution of crops cultivated Crop areas and predicted crop yields Periodic changes in crops or farming patterns Detection of crop damage Evaluation of plant diseases and plant vigor Surveys and mapping of agricultural soils Analysis of terrain and soil-forming processes

Culture, Agriculture and Anthropic Soils: The Araracuara Case, Colombian Amazonia Santiago Mora Abstract . Black and brown earths have been identified in different locations in Amazonia. Their characteristics as well as their association with archaeological material strongly suggest a human origin. However, the archaeological context where they develop, their history and evolution are still a matter of debate. The data recovered until now have suggested a strong variability that could be explained in part as a consequence of multiple physical and cultural processes involved in their origin and evolution. The purpose of this presentation is to examine Araracuara's anthropic soils from an archaeological perspective that considers its role in agriculture and its cultural context over a 1000 years occupation. Summary:
This data set consists of GIS layers that describe the soils of the BOREAS SSA. These original data layers were submitted as vector data in ARC/INFO EXPORT format. These data also include the soil name and soil layer files, which provide additional information about the soils. There are three sets of attributes that include information on the primary, secondary, and tertiary soil type within each polygon. Thus, there is a total of nine main attributes in this data set. A guide document which includes more information about this data set can be found at http://www.daac.ornl.gov /boreas/STAFF/soil125v/comp/SSA_Soils_125K_Vector.txt ORNL DAAC maintains information on the entire BOREAS Project

Is organic farming beneficial to soils?
Organic management promotes the development of earthworms and above ground arthropodes , thus improving the growth conditions of the crop. More abundant predators help to control harmful organisms (pests).
Epigaeic arthropods Epigaeic arthropodes that live above ground, like carabids, staphilinids and spiders, are considered sensitive indicators for the evaluation of site quality. Some species are recognized as important predators, who feed on other insects and especially on the highly abundant pest populations
    Foto: Siegfried Keller (FAL)
    Density of carabids, staphilinids and spiders (average of 1988, 1990 and 1991), K2 = 100 %
In the organic systems the density of arthropods living on the soil surface was almost twice that of the conventional soils. This difference is explained by prey deficiency due to pesticide influence as well as by a richer weed flora in the standing crop that was less dense than in the conventional plots.
    Earthworms
Earthworms are well known for their sensitivity to pesticides.

FiBL Frick Research Soil-ecology DOK-Trial: Organic farming enhances soil fertility and biodiversity
Does organic farming mine our soils?
The negative nutrient balance for phosphorus and potassium leads to a decrease in the easily available fraction of these elements. The nutrient reserves in soil, however, decreased less dramatically.
Potassium became rate-limiting relatively early after conversion to organic management when potatoes were cultivated. Fertilization with potassium is indicated where allowed according to the rules of organic farming.
Water soluble phosphorous Water soluble phosphorus decreased markedly in all systems. In the beginning of the field trial the conventional system was strongly fertilized to enhance the phosphorus and potassium concentration. Towards the end of the third crop rotation, however, soluble phosphorus values decreased to those of the organic systems.
The phosporus soluble in 2% citric acid The phosporus soluble in 2% citric acid is less immediately available, and represents reserve nutrients.
