Product Description

Bestselling master of suspense Jeffery Deaver is back with a brand-new Lincoln Rhyme thriller.

Lincoln Rhyme and partner/paramour Amelia Sachs return to face a criminal whose ingenious staging of crimes is enabled by a terrifying access to information....

When Lincoln's estranged cousin Arthur Rhyme is arrested on murder charges, the case is perfect -- too perfect. Forensic evidence from Arthur's home is found all over the scene of the crime, and it looks like the fate of Lincoln's relative is sealed.

At the behest of Arthur's wife, Judy, Lincoln grudgingly agrees to investigate the case. Soon Lincoln and Amelia uncover a string of similar murders and rapes with perpetrators claiming innocence and ignorance -- despite ironclad evidence at the scenes of the crime. Rhyme's team realizes this "perfect" evidence may actually be the result of masterful identity theft and manipulation.

An information service company -- the huge data miner Strategic Systems Datacorp -- seems to have all the answers but is reluctant to help the police. Still, Rhyme and Sachs and their assembled team begin uncovering a chilling pattern of vicious crimes and coverups, and their investigation points to one master criminal, whom they dub "522."

When "522" learns the identities of the crime-fighting team, the hunters become the hunted. Full of Deaver's trademark plot twists, The Broken Window will put the partnership of Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs to the ultimate test. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick fun read!
7.5/10

That's my personal review of the book.Deaver weaves a page turning thrill ride in another Lincoln Rhyme case. The best part of the books is learning how amazingly scary the amount of information that's available online. The book's a quick read, fun and suspenseful.I recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC perspective on our "Brave New World"
WOW, this book is NEAR PERFECTION!!!Great story, wonderful complexity without being confusing, great perspective on the whole loss of privacy issue that's so "in the news" these days.Loved how they brought in Rhyme's cousin as a reason for Rhyme to get involved in the case. The 'bad guy' was totally believable and cunning and scary but Deaver did an outstanding job of getting into his head, could really suspend disbelief on all of it, was so caught up in it, just WOW!!!Amazing!I loved how Rhyme loosened up a tad personally with his medical aide, that was a great side mini-story.And, yes, it has a lot of pages, almost 600, but it's not a long book and this coming from someone who rarely reads a book over 400 pages.I wouldn't cut out a thing!Just great.

Others by him that are amazing include:Bone Collector, Coffin Dancer, both Rhyme novels and A Maiden's Grave (an oldie, but just great), and Praying for Sleep, another oldie. His works aren't quite as consistent as I'd like, there are some that were not interesting to me at all (Blue Nowhere and Empty Chair), so be cautious on which ones you choose to read.I mean, there are tons of great books out there, why settle???

THIS ONE IS ONE I will reread several times, I'm sure!

5-0 out of 5 stars Now here is a fine mystery writer....
There are so many novels that pupport to be mysteries, and so many series with a dedicated following.
So often they are mediocre, plodding and after a few chapters, you think ...'who cares!'
This was my first Jeffrey Deaver mystery...a Lincoln Rhyme, thoroughly engrossing, defined characters.
Look forward to reading more of Mr. Deaver's literary efforts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frighteningly Informative
The Broken Window by Jeffery Deaver will shake you to your foundations. It is so riveting you can't put it down and so terrifying you almost wish you'd never picked it up in the first place. This is most frightening story I've ever read and probably the most gruesome. The murders in this story aren't especially grisly, but what happens to the people accused of those murders is almost worse than dying.Though they are innocent, they sit in jail and watch as their lives are butchered. There are scary things in this book that you should know to protect yourself, but the problem is how do you protect yourself in the electronic world.
Lincoln Rhyme is a very busy man considering he's a paraplegic, but everybody prefers him working because the brilliant forensic crime solver is unbearable when he's bored.Rhyme depends on electronics to expand his world, without them he would be condemned to a life with little or no stimulus. He has many enemies, but boredom is the most dangerous until he's pitted against the man looking through the broken window. This book will entertain you as much as it frightens you.Definately a must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The concept really blows the reader away
This book is vintage Lincoln Rhyme. In this thriller, Deaver graphically portrays murder(s) via computers. The concept really blows the reader away. We are all vulnerable in cyberspace. As the plot twists and turns, the romantic team of Lincoln and Amelia face the ultimate amoral mastermind. This reader was breathless and involved until the last word of the last page. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and interesting
Since I just purchased a new computer with Windows 7 installed, I knew I would need a book to bring me up to speed on the new items and changes made since XP.I enjoy books like these with both explanations and photos and many of the tasks can be accomplished with just two pages of instruction.Just reading the instructions can seem quite complicated sometime, but with a book like this the instructions and photos on a 2-page layout makes everything simple. There are also Tips, Notes and Cautions added to the pages to help understand the reasoning behind the steps presented to complete the task.Another thing I like is the edges of the book are colored so if one wants to go directly to a specific section of the book you just need to glance at the colors. All in all, this is a great book for following the simple steps to get acquainted with a new system and it's a joy for all who are visually oriented.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surpirsed
I was looking for something to help me get set up quickly on my new computer, since my old one had died. I had ordered "Windows 7 the Missing Manual", which is very good but not for getting started quickly. When I read the first few pages and he started with how to use a mouse, I thought this was going to way too simplistic. To my pleasant surprise, he quickly moved past this to exactly the things I needed to know to get up and running quickly. This is an excellent book to jump-start you into Windows 7.

4-0 out of 5 stars Windows 7 Explained with Ease
I've been doing it at least since the introduction of Windows 95. After buying a computer, I buy one, two or three guide books about the operating system. In the beginning of my computer experience these guide book/references were invaluable and helped me though many difficult situations. With each subsequent Windows incarnation, however, I needed to consult a Windows help book with less and less frequency. Resting on a shelf upstairs are three Windows Vista reference books, all barely touched, listed for sale on a web site, and waiting for buyers.

This time, after buying a laptop outfitted with Windows 7, I decided not to go overboard, only buying one Windows book, Windows 7 QuickSteps. I set the book aside and at least a month passed by before I got around to reading it cover to cover. During that month I had to need to consult my new Windows 7 guide even once. Now having read the book I realize that just about anything I would need to know about Windows 7 is either available on the Microsoft site or on my new computer itself, equipped with Windows 7 tips and guides, and even a few tutorial videos.
Some, like myself, nonetheless, prefer to have a book on hand for ease of access and ease of locating specific help topics.

So how is this Fast Reference book? It's actually quite good, and I am pleased with my choice. Windows 7 Quick Steps is touted as an "easy, illustrated, How To" and it fulfills all three promises.
The reader can access information on specific Windows topics by using the Contents at a Glance, the expanded contents, or the index. There are even convenient colored taps on the book edges to make chapters available with the flip of a thumb.

The color illustrations are quite legible and extremely helpful, especially for those who understand better by actually seeing what the author is explaining. One who wants to briefly examine the book, will get a feel for it by reading the contents, studying some of the illustrations, and reading the Notes, Tips, and QuickSteps scattered throughout the book.

Most experienced computer users will find much that is familiar: right clicking, using the taskbar, printing, favorites, history, working with pictures, menus, saving, and security. There is new ground to cover also; how often one will need to consult this book will depend on one's experience and computer expertise. For some like this writer who have forgotten more than they know, owning a book like Windows 7 is good insurance for those inevitable sticky situations.

For anyone who wants to own a Windows 7 guide as a learning tool, or as just-in-case insurance, Windows 7 QuickSteps is a good choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for enterprise users, helps reduce support calls
We are just starting to deploy Windows 7 throughout our organization. We have a lot of savvy users but we also have those users who need a little training. One thing we don't do here is basic training. It's 2010. My opinion is that people should be able to figure out basic computer stuff on their own. What they need is guidance. That's what Windows 7 Quick Steps provides. I ordered a bunch of these books to pass out as our users make the transition from Vista. The book is perfect for all levels of users. It delivers on its "Quick Steps" format. Most experienced users can quickly find what they need by simply looking at the illustrations. Not so experienced users can read the very concise text. It is relatively free of daunting technical information, which most of my users are not interested in learning about. This book makes it easy for them to get just the information they need. If more complex issues arise, I usually want a support person to handle it anyway. This book really reduces our support calls.

5-0 out of 5 stars Be Prepared!
Having a map in hand when you set out on a trip into unfamiliar territory is helpful and comforting. Before you venture into Windows 7, grab this thorough guide to navigating through Microsoft's new computing environment. Whether you're new to Windows, or an old hand at it, you'll be glad to have this knowledgeable and easy to understand companion with you on your journey of discovery. Guaranteed to get you where you want to go, without wandering in circles! ... Read more

Product Description

"If your job requires investigating compromised Windows hosts, you must read Windows Forensic Analysis."
-Richard Bejtlich, Coauthor of Real Digital Forensics and Amazon.com Top 500 Book Reviewer

"The Registry Analysis chapter alone is worth the price of the book."
-Troy Larson, Senior Forensic Investigator of Microsoft's IT Security Group

"I also found that the entire book could have been written on just registry forensics. However, in order to create broad appeal, the registry section was probably shortened. You can tell Harlan has a lot more to tell."
-Rob Lee, Instructor and Fellow at the SANS Technology Institute, coauthor of Know Your Enemy: Learning About Security Threats, 2E

Author Harlan Carvey has brought his best-selling book up-to-date to give you: the responder, examiner, or analyst the must-have tool kit for your job. Windows is the largest operating system on desktops and servers worldwide, which mean more intrusions, malware infections, and cybercrime happen on these systems. Windows Forensic Analysis DVD Toolkit, 2E covers both live and post-mortem response collection and analysis methodologies, addressing material that is applicable to law enforcement, the federal government, students, and consultants. The book is also accessible to system administrators, who are often the frontline when an incident occurs, but due to staffing and budget constraints do not have the necessary knowledge to respond effectively. The book's companion DVD contains significant new and updated materials (movies, spreadsheet, code, etc.) not available any place else, because they are created and maintained by the author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Book!
I'm extremely impressed with how thoroughly the author covers the methods discussed in this book. Usually when I pick up a book like this I'm prepared for more questions than when I started, but that's not the case with Windows Forensic Analysis. It's elegantly worded and easy to follow which is hard to find when it comes to technical books, especially on a subject like this that can easily intimidate a reader who isn't already a programmer or an industry professional. I almost hesitate to use the term "technical" because that implies you need to be an engineer to understand the subject matter which is not the case here.

I read non-stop for 8 hours straight yesterday and I still didn't want to put it down. Not only that, but today I was able to recall almost all of the subject matter covered without returning to the book for a reminder. This speaks volumes about a book where too often information is easily forgotten if you aren't sitting in front of a computer practicing the methods being discussed as you make your way through it.

As a long time Windows user, this book has helped fill in a lot of blanks, and I feel like I'll have a lot more flexibility and power by employing many of the tools and techniques as an individual who spends a lot of time using Windows. Thank you Harlan!

5-0 out of 5 stars Skibo
I saw this book at Barnes and Noble and picked it up and started to scan it, To my Demised it caught my curiosity. The more I read the more I could relate! This book is top rated! I highly recommend it!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars There is no substitute for this book
I read and reviewed the 1st Ed of this book in July 2007, and I just finished reading Windows Forensic Analysis 2nd Ed (WFA2E) this weekend. If your job involves investigating Windows systems, you must read this book. It's as simple as that. There is no substitute for this book.It also perfectly complements other solid forensics works already published.

The three main reasons why I liked the 1st Ed hold for the 2nd Ed.The subject matter is exactly what I wanted to read. WFA2E introduces a vast number of tools to help investigators implement the concepts explained by the author.Harlan brings a lot of experience to WFA.Of these three, I really appreciate Harlan's experience. He is constantly "in the fight" so he knows what works and what doesn't.He's been around so long that he knows what he's talking about. If he encounters a problem, he can either try fixing it himself or he is friends with someone who can work the issue. All of these characteristics shine in WFA2E.

I expect to see a 3rd Ed of this book in a few years, incorporating more Windows Vista and Windows 7 material. It might also be helpful to consider techniques for Windows Server and Mobile platforms in the 3rd Ed.Regardless, I will look forward to that book when it arrives because I enjoyed WFA1E and WFA2E so much.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best forensic book currently available
I've started reading or read a number of forensic books in the past two years.Though I have yet to read a specific Operating System forensic book, most have generally focused on Windows as the choice for forensic analysis.Of all the books that I have read, I would have to say that by far Windows Forensic Analysis DVD Toolkit second edition is the best.
The author is very thorough without beating a single tool to death. The author covers numerous tools, but continues to stress that having information from one tool does not give the investigator the `smoking gun' to solving the case.He stresses repeatedly that this is just adding another tool to the investigator's toolbox.
Many books are simply an attempt to sell their book by declaring that if you follow: step one, followed by step two, followed by step three etc. that you will suddenly be a master forensic investigator or incident handler.Harlan Carvery never says that reading this book will make you an expert, only that he hopes to enlighten the reader to new tools and techniques. The author makes it very clear that each tool is valuable, but the reader should find the tools that suite their own need and get the experience necessary to analyze the output.
The book jumps straight into the discussion of volatile data and the importance of capturing it as close to the instance of compromise as possible.I was pleased to see that the author made a point of emphasizing this. There is still a mindset in many situations that pulling the plug is the first thing to accomplish.
The first three chapters are a statement to the importance placed on collecting and analyzing the volatile portion of the incident.Though technically the first two chapters also cover information to tie in the remaining chapters there is always that focus of maintaining data as close to the point of compromise as possible.
The next three chapters cover the static files and registry that a Forensic Analyst will have to review and analyze. The author covers numerous tools as well as providing his tools and his preferences for use.
The last three chapters cover rootkits, tying it together with case studies and then finally Forensic Analysis on a budget.
Throughout the book the author makes references to papers, websites and other books that will provide a much more indepth discussion of the topics. In every chapter he provides a source for more up-to-date software than what is provided on the DVD.
The author includes numerous tools that are his personal scripts or scripts that he has modified for his use.For the most part his scripts are all Perl based, but again the author shows his flexibility and understanding when he explains why his tools are Perl and not something else.At no point does the author take a "this is the only right way to do it" attitude. It is refreshing to see an unbiased book that is primarily Windows oriented.
With all that being said I would say that grammatical editing could have been a little better.Even with these errors the book was definitely worth buying. We have a copy in our office and I am buying a copy for my own personal use.I would say that if you are doing Windows forensics or have an interest in learning about the current trends in Windows forensics you need to pick up a copy.It will be an invaluable resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text covers live response and traditional computer forensics
Harlan Carvey is one of the most prolific writers on compute forensics. He has a spare writing style that conveys information directly, without excursions. In short, he is a delight to read.

In this second edition of Windows Forensic Analysis, he broadens the territory to include live system response. His three chapters on the subject are interesting, but not of particular immediate interest to me since I have no call to do such. It is, however, helpful to have the information just in case and Carvey presents it in a coherent manner. His descriptions of the various available are quite good.

Harlan's chapters on Registry and File Analysis are worth far more than the price of the bok. He is one of the masters of the arcane innards of the Windows Registry and has written a power and useful tool, RegRipper, to make registry analysis far easier and more productive. These two chapters alone make this book a must-have for the active computer forensics examiner.

The chapters on Executable File Analysis and Rootkits, like the earlier chapters on live response will have limited application for many examiners. However, once again Carvey's writing style makes the information highly accessible and the chapters are worth reading solely to put their contents in your own memory.

Harlan is quite am accomplished Perl scripter and the accompanying DVD is crammed with useful Perl scripts he has written. As a courtesy, he has also included the scripts from the first edition of his book, which is very nice of him.

Harlan writes for the person with some experience in the field. For those people, Windows Forensic Analysis 2nd. Ed. Serves not only as a text, but as a quotable reference as well. There are actually very few solid texts on computer forensics. This is one of them.

Windows XP for Dummies does a good job in its role as the flagship of the Dummies line, providing Windows novices with a guided introduction to Microsoft's latest and most feature-rich operating system for everyday computer users. Its treatment of computer, Windows, and Internet fundamentals is among the best on the market, and author Andy Rathbone has an appealing way of writing that's simultaneously fun and detail-rich. If you're a Windows novice--meaning you don't know how to undelete a file that's been sent to the Recycle Bin, or what a Web browser is, or what it means to "cut and paste" text--you will get a lot out of Rathbone's work.

Some aspects of this book could be better, such as the part of the networking chapter that calls for an Ethernet hub without noting that a switch, though possibly more expensive, would do the job better, without any additional hassle. The networking coverage also does an inadequate job of explaining how to share a cable modem or DSL connection among several computers. This is a serious shortcoming, and we're getting to the point in our evolution as a society of computer users at which we can assume that everyone knows what the "Cancel" button does and would rather read about the newer, more exciting things that Windows XP can do. Even the dummies aren't that dumb anymore.

But that said--and Rathbone does confine a lot of the really elementary stuff to a skinny introductory chapter--this book is a boon to people who aren't familiar with Windows XP or its immediate predecessors (including Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Me). It's also great for people who have learned a little about Windows on the job or from their kids, and want to expand on what they know. --David Wall

Topics covered: Microsoft Windows XP for people completely unfamiliar with the operating system and other recent versions of Windows. 5-0 out of 5 stars Windows 7 for Dummies by Andy Rathbone
Excellent text and reference book.Easy to read and understand.Recommend for novice and mid-level computer users.I have found the "Dummies" books to be an indispensible part of my computer library upon upgrading to each new operating system and the DVD was just the thing to round off the learning process. Of course, if you're too stuck on yourself to even consider reading something with "Dummies" in the title then maybe you better just use the old "trial and error method."And if you're going to buy a book, Amazon.com is the economical place to do it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Product great. But the setup sucked!!!
The product I eventually received was in great condition! However the set up to purchase was deliberately misleading. You get the impression that you can track item, not so!!! Then when they have taken your money you find that the item can take up to 3 weeks for delivery. I felt i was mislead, and repeatedly attempted to cancel my order. Was not allowed by the company selling the product. Eventually, i received a notice something about it has nothing to do with amazon but with the company. Bunch of baloney!!! Was not happy with amazon or the company. Won't be buying anything fro them again.

Amazon.com Review
Here’s the ideal, on-the-go reference that desktop administrators and support professionals can carry with them as they support and manage Windows 7.

DISM Tool Techniques
The Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool (DISM) ships with business editions of Windows 7. Using DISM, you can manage online and offline images of the Windows operating system, including images for deployment and those for virtual machines. Windows Image (.wim) files are used to deploy Windows 7. Virtual hard disk (.vhd) files are used with virtual machines. The same commands work on WIM and VHD files.

You can use DISM to:
--Add and remove packages. Packages can include language packs, patches, utilities, and so on.
--Enable and disable Windows features.
--Add and remove third-party device drivers.

You can run DISM at an elevated administrator command prompt by following these steps:
1. Click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Accessories.
2. Right-click the Command Prompt shortcut on the menu, and then click Run As Administrator. (If you see the User Account Control prompt, proceed as you normally would to allow the application to run with administrator privileges.)
3. In the Command Prompt window, enter dism /? to view available options for DISM.
4. To view commands available for working with online images, enter dism/online/?.

Although DISM is designed to work primarily with offline images and images you've mounted, you can use some DISM commands to get important information about the live operating system running on a computer.
For example, if you want to display a list of Windows editions to which a computer can be upgraded, you can enter the following command:
dism /online /get-targeteditions

You can customize a mounted boot or install image using the DISM utility. Available options for DISM are summarized in the table below. All components in an image are managed via the component store.
The Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool provides commands for working with WIM images. The syntax for mounting images is:
dism /mount-wim /wimfile: Path /index:Index /mountdir:MountPath

where Path is the full path to the WIM image, Index is the index position of the image number of the image within the .wim file to apply, and MountPath is the directory location where you'd like to mount the image, such as:

dism /mount-wim /wimfile:c:\winpe_x86\iso\sources\boot.wim /index:1
/mountdir:c:\win7

You can then modify the image as necessary. To commit your changes at any time, you can use Dism /Commit-Wim as shown in the following example:

dism /commit-wim /mountdir:c:\win7
Here, you commit changes to the WIM images mounted in the C:\Win7 directory.
To unmount a WIM file, you can use Dism /Unmount-Wim as shown in the following example:

dism /unmount-wim /mountdir:c:\win7

Product Description

Windows on the World Complete Wine Course is simply the bestselling wine book in North America—it’s a classic. In addition to retaining the expanded 60-page section on “101 Wines You Should Know,” from last year, the 2009 revision will include 16 pages of quizzes (two at the end of every chapter) to test readers on how much they’ve learned—just as if they were in Kevin’s class. Those who use the book as an actual course will find this enormously helpful, and a great challenge for testing their knowledge of wine fundamentals. Of course, all wine lists and labels, vintage charts, and trend reports will receive a complete update, too.
As always, Zraly organizes his wines by region, from simple to complex, beginning with white wines from France, the U.S., and Germany; he moves on to the red wines of Burgundy and the Rhône, Bordeaux, the U.S., Italy, Australia, Argentina, and Chile; and concludes with champagnes and ports. By following Kevin’s order, readers will experience the best wines and the wide diversity of taste, style, region, and country. It’s not only a comprehensive and bargain-priced hands-on wine education, but a superb catalog from which to start a wine cellar or find a bottle appropriate for any occasion at any price.
This unequaled volume retains all the invaluable information, fabulous illustration, and gorgeous styling of the previous editions—presented in Zraly’s inimitable, irreverent style. It’s clearly the wine guide against which all others are judged.

Great book! Must read if you like to learn more about wine. Easy to read and easy to follow.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Moment of Silence

Are we talking about reverence in a moment of recollection regarding the deceased?

Nope.

It's about the proper appreciation of wine. As Kevin Zraly, founder of the Windows on the World Wine School writes, "Over the last few years I have insisted that my students spend one minute in silence after they swallow the wine".

Okay, fair enough.

But then, this. "In my classes it is amazing to see more than a hundred students silently taking one minute to analyze a wine. Some close their eyes, some bow their heads in deep thought, others write notes."

Gee, this seems to be bordering on some kind of religious experience...

For the most part though this book manages to avoid this kind of pretentious blather. That's a good thing. After all, it's only wine.

This having been said, I recommend Complete Wine Course for budding oenophiles and anyone who wants to understand a bit more about what they're drinking and why they may or may not like it.

There are chapters devoted to the major wine growing regions, and what makes them distinctive. We learn about the characteristics of the major varietals, and are exposed to history, production methods, and more. Maps, reproductions of labels, photos and charts add visual interest to the text.

So go ahead - enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wine is my passion
Over the years, my passion for winehas evolved into an appreciation for hand-crafted winemaking tradition and an attraction to Bordeaux style wines , this book is great to start , I recommended to all who appreciate wine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great wine book!
If you getting into wine for work or play, this is a great place to start.Easy to read, but more importantly fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very readable and tons of good info
I bought this for my husband for Christmas and we are steadily reading our way through it, generally with the aid of a bottle of wine! It has so much good information, and is presented in a really friendly, easily-accessible way. I feel we are learning a lot, and enjoying the process! We have already started to branch out in our wine buying rather than sticking to the old favourites.I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves wine and wants to know more about it! ... A Light in the Window is the second installment in thisenormously popular series about a small-town rector, Father Tim, andthe heartwarming cast of characters surrounding him. This time FatherTim, a lifelong bachelor, finds his heart distracted by hisfree-spirited neighbor Cynthia, but his stomach and the rectory cashbox are distracted by Edith, a wealthy widow who is wooing the rectorwith love potion casseroles. At every turn, including when a broodingIrish cousin decides to move in, Father Tim must decide whether hewill practice what he preaches.

Fans of the series say they long to buy real estate in Mitford, justso they can live next door to these funny and endearing characters andfeel the embrace of such a loving community. 5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous Mitford Series
I thoroughly enjoyed this book as I have all the books on life in Mitford and would highly recommend them to all readers. The characters are so interesting and I am going to hate to see the series end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jan Karon...the best
You can't go wrong with a Jan Karon book. She is the only author that I have read and re-read her books. You get to know the characters and they grow and change with each book. I love Father Tim and his relationship with Cynthia. The town of Mitford is a small town with a lot of character. I would love to live in Mitford!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Light in the Window
I happened upon the Mitford Years series at our local library and promptly fell in love with the stories. Our library had every book in the series except "A Light in the Window". thus I was able to read the entire series in a matter of weeks, one after the other. The problem...I wanted more.

The stories are beautifully written - I did think Father Tim, the Episcopal minister was more than a little dense when it came to romance but given the fact he was in his 60's and had never been in love nor been married, I suppose it was understandable to an extent. However, he nearly lost his chance to be with this incredible creative lady he belatedly proposed to.

The way the people in the town are incorporated into the story is beautiful, you come to know and care for all of them.

Beautiful book, beautiful series!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Light for the Darkness
We love the Mitford books. Though, as a pastor, I am amazed at how much one man does and how intimate he is with his congregation, this book serves as an inspiration and heart warming tale. It certainly provides a better light on the clergy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't miss this book
I listened to "At Home at Midford" and started to like Father Timothy.Father Timothy reminds me of Paul in the New Testament: fearless, courageous, lovable, kind, self sacrificing, and lonely.

"The Light in the Window" has a very special window of spirituality, as Mrs Saddie shares her miraculous rescue after falling in a old well.A truly surprising addition to the story line which will bring tears to your eyes.

Doolie is becoming a man. Opportunity is available all around him, football, college, tutors, and friends.Doolie struggles with smoking and disobeying Father Timothy leading to the injury of his friend Tommy.

Buck Leaper! Now, there is a character that will make you retreat.Buck is a tough, mean, hard driven man. However, in the end you will discover he is a private individual with an amazing sorrowful story of loss.Buck highlights the possiblity of forgiveness and cause you to have empathy towards the enemy and see him as a real person.

I loved "A Light in the Window".Cynthia, afraid to be hurt, wanting emotional commitment, NY lifestyle, book writer, and cat fan seeks Father Timothy's undivided attention and devote. She gets its. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Honest Transparency
What can you say about a book that makes you think and reflect?Gives a challenge to look deep within the heart and soul of Christ to reveal your own heart and soul.Ken Gire is honest, transparent, and fearless in sharing fears, doubts, spiritual hunger and barrenness and yet, it is not about him......but about the Christ, the Savior, the King that revealed the real Ken Gire to Ken Gire as hejourneyed in the wilderness.Excellent book. Windows of the Soul

5-0 out of 5 stars I know Ken Gire and he's solid
I met Ken Gire many years ago when he was an editor at Insight for Living Inc. He was soundly evangelical then and I believe he is now. I don't think he is trying to say at all that Scripture is somehow insufficient and we must seek further daily revelations from God. Scripture is always our foremost authority. Based upon Scripture as our bedrock, I believe he is saying that we must also keep our minds working and our eyes open to what can be learned through epiphanies as well as mundane daily experiences. What might God want us to learn from our encounters?

I found the book even more interesting because I am a writer and Gire shares some of his experiences in writing. It was at Insight for Living that his first books really took off and books reps showed up to seek more writings. Throughout that process he remained humble and desirous of writing that which could most help other believers.

I have little room for books in my little office and must carefully select those to keep on the shelves. This is definitely a book you will want to have on your shelf to refer to occasionally.

5-0 out of 5 stars Being Truly Alive
Wonderful in every way, this book - though not of the depth and intensity of the more ancient Christian classics - is a modern classic. Ken Gire's magnificent words bathe both mind and soul in inspiration and beauty and thoughtfulness in how we are to live Christ out in our lives. The reader finds himself wanting to see others differently and live life more vividly. The only disappointment with the book is that it ends.

5-0 out of 5 stars If only all Christian Living books where this good
This is one of the few 'Christian Living' books I've been impressed with. The author is very open and honest, writing with emotion on every page. This book is what evangelicals need to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Illustrations not my cup of tea but story wins out
Let me say this up front: The artwork is not my favorite. It is almost Fauvist (or maybe some other "ist"); in any case, perhaps the failing is my own immature art appreciation. But the story is sweet without being sappy, and much better than I initially gave it credit for. I particularly enjoy how it is told from the child's perspective. My favorite part is when she reports that "nothing happens" while she is napping; true enough, as far as a kid is concerned! Note that the portrayal of an interracial family has nothing to do with the story itself yet nor does it detract. To the extent that the same can be said for real life (in other words, that color *doesn't* matter), this is worthwhile.

3-0 out of 5 stars Scribbley Colors
Though it didn't speak to me, this book could be very useful with young children to explore the idea that they can write about anything, even a window at their grandparent's house and what it means to them. It also introduces quotes in a very simple and non-intrusive way.
The pictures in the book are abstract and very colorful. Young children might find them fun and whimsical. I cannot decide if because of the abstractness I think they are not very detailed pictures, or overly detailed pictures. Overall, I didn't find this book that great.

5-0 out of 5 stars As good as kids' books get!
I just tripped across this book at a bookstore; I didn't realize who the author was...I was just captivated by the amazing illustrations.Once I read the book I knew it had to be on our bookshelf.I've been reading it to my now-5 year old for 3 years and we love it as much now as ever.It just never gets old or boring or repetitive. The characters are adorable and funny and intelligent, the artwork is mesmerizing, and the text is fantastic; clever and intelligent and spot-on.I've already given it as a present several times. Can't say enough good things about this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Family Favorite
We got this book as a gift and it has been so popular with our kids (5 year old son and and 7 year old daughter) that for a time when my daughter was 3 she actually had it memorized. It is a delightfully simple story of a little girl enjoying time with her grandparents while her parents are at work. The illustrations are beautiful, subtle almost impressionistic portrayals of life as seen by the little girl / narrator. The text is well done with a musical quality to it. I feel this book well deserves the honors that it has been bestowed.

Other favorites to check out include: Snowmen at Night, Snowmen at Christmas, The Relatives Came (Live Oak Readalong),Bear Snores on, and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Loving Tribute to Interacial Familes
I was so thrilled when I began to read this book: my husband is Italian, and I'm black. It was the first time I had ever seen an interracial family in a children's book. The loving, supportive family portrayed in the story illustrate that people don't have to look alike in order to be a family. I purchased two copies of this book: one for thedaughter's son I have, and one for the grandchildren I hope to one day have from my son. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Secrets NO!!! -- Windows 7 for Dummies Yes.
Can't echo the Secrets-NO! reviews enough already for this book.If this book was titled 'Windows 7 for Dummies' or akin than it would indeed be an OK book...as this book is just a very HIGH level walk-through of windows 7 features like how to install for a user that doesn't know much about computers or want anything more than a very default like orientation of windows (for example the install section recommends you glaze onto the next screen at the partition window and so on).

In contrasting fact, I find the documentation for Windows 7 to include more information than what's in this book on most of the topics discussed. Hardly a secret book at all.

Furthermore if you have any technical expertise with non-Microsoft software you will find the excessive market-like rants about how great Microsoft is for this and that "after seven years of research"...etc to include features that have been around in Linux/Mac and Firefox for years all the more annoying about this book.

Again, OK book for non-technical people who want a high-level overview of Windows 7 features and want to read on and on about Microsoft like dogmatic claims but if you are looking for how does Windows 7 do any feature under the scenes to do what you never thought possible, insider tips, advanced documentation, and expert advice as the cover claims...there is a hardly a secret in it.

Ex of a what they call a secret- "You don't have to enter your product key in the license installation window, Windows will give you up to 30 days to activate"

All in all, it reads more like an elongated demo of Windows 7 by someone from Microsoft.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Coffee Table Ever
I really enjoy this coffee table. I think it's cute they designed it to look like a computer book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview, but not many "secrets" exposed
Having gone through an upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 last year, I thought that this book would help answer some of those "where did that feature go?" types of questions. I also follow the author's web site posts and blog, and I have found those to be informational.

It's obvious through the 1,000+ plus pages of this book that the authors put a lot of time and effort into it. For someone with only a casual familiarity with Windows (of any ilk), this would be a helpful reference. However, if you're looking for something to serve as an in-depth reference, you have to separate a lot of chaff to find the wheat in those 1,054 pages.

I have come across numerous features that have changed from Windows XP, which are inexplicably missing from Windows 7. Nothing obvious, but little things like the fact that Windows 7 doesn't save window positions for different Windows Explorer windows, and that you can't have some folders spawn new windows while others open in the current window. This may have changed in Windows Vista, but I am one of those people that never took that jump from Windows XP because there was little compelling reason to do so.

While this book does provide you with information about some features that may not be immediately obvious, it doesn't necessarily live up to the promise of its title for someone already familiar with Windows in general and just needs a good solid reference on how to do things in Windows 7, especially when those things have moved or changed from Windows XP.

It does provide useful information, but I found myself wishing that it was available as a searchable reference online instead of in a printed book.

The author does update a companion web site to correct errors and add omitted information, but it would also be nice if one could perform a search on the web site and it would tell you what page that the search results could be found on, much like an online concordance for the printed book. Better still, each book should come with a unique code that would unlock an electronic version of the book for online searches and reference. Opening it up for comments from buyers of the book could add to the value that it presents by gathering the knowledge of a larger set of people, but perhaps the challenge of moderating those comments would be too great a chore...

Is Windows 7 Secrets worth the money? I think so, and that's largely because it acts as the user's guide that you don't get with the package when you pay your $100-$150 for a copy of Windows 7.

But a definitive reference to all things Windows 7, it is not. So long as you know that going in, it presents a good value.

3-0 out of 5 stars Should really be about 3.5 stars
I have to admit that, despite having this book for about six months now, I've only read the first half (...note that it is over 1000 pages long).I had ordered some copies of Windows 7 and found myself quite motivated to start digging into it waiting for my Windows 7 upgrade DVDs to arrive, but after it did arrive, I found myself learning most new things by playing around and using the built-in help and became somewhat less interested in actually reading.

But that was a bit of a mistake.

Despite a less-than-glowing rating, there's a lot of information in this book that the average user is unlikely to discover in "casual usage" of Windows 7.E.g., do you really understand how Windows 7 libraries operate?Do you know you can have the ubiquitous clock widget that's been around since Windows 95 display multiple clocks (for different timezones)?Just what are all the different flavors of Windows 7 anyway -- if you're going to be footing the bill for a new or upgrade copy (rather than just getting it with a new PC), you'll want to know so there won't be any "surprises" as to what works and what doesn't.(In particular, it seems like a lot of people who end up with Home Premium feel a little short-changed that it doesn't come with "XP mode" -- Win 7 Professional or Ultimate are required for that.)

Basically what I'm saying above, though, is that I recommend you do get "the missing manual" (no, not necessarily that particularly line of books) for Windows 7 -- while some are better than others, all of them will, I believe, teach you enough new tricks to be worthwhile and let you interact with your PC more productively. So with that in mind, here's what I see as the pros and cons of this particular book:

Pros:

-- It is quite comprehensive when it comes to the *GUI* aspects of Windows
-- The authors will occasionally tell you little tricks when there's some obviously annoying aspect of Windows, e.g., how to use an "Upgrade" DVD to perform a fresh install (...assuming you know you can legally do this -- Microsoft apparently makes this difficult because they figure most people who'd want to do it want to in an effort to violate copyright law, which has the unfortunate side effect of screwing over all the folks with a legitimate desire and the appropriate licensing to do so... but I guess that's DRM for you in general: Doesn't really harm the bad guys any, but it's a real pain in the side of the good guys.)
-- Plenty of illustrations make it easy to follow
-- The editing is good; unlike some computer books today, this one clearly had an editor who cared and double-checked, e.g., figure references, spelling, grammar, etc.

And now for some of the Cons:

-- On the back it claims the reader level is "medium to advanced."No way -- "beginner to medium" is more like it.There all of 7 pages devoted to Windows PowerShell, for instance (mainly just mentioning what it is and how to fire it up), and IMO any "medium to advanced" level book should have considerably more detailed examples and discussions of it.(...and indeed, I looked at another comprehensive Windows 7 book like this at Fry's one day, and it had an entire chapter devoted to PowerShell; I unfortunately do not remembering the title.)
-- The authors have drunk a bit too much of the Microsoft Kool Aid, in my opinion. They occasionally drop in little bits along the lines of, "Microsoft has chosen the best option here" or "we don't even know why these other options are available, as we can't imagine anyone not just using Microsoft's defaults."Blecch!Gag me with a spoon, man; if you're going to write this sort of tripe, you should be writing for Microsoft Press and not a competitor!(Be see the pros too -- they're not *completely* blindsided to all of Windows' shortcomings.)
-- It's more the fault of the publisher than the authors, but to me the title "Windows 7 SECRETS" implies you're going to get information that is available in few -- if any -- other places; information that others are actively attempting to kept private.Of course, that's not the case at all here -- indeed, the authors themselves explain at one point that to them "secrets" just means something more like "information that isn't readily known, that might be buried deep within the official documents."Well, OK, but I don't think your high school English teachers would approve of that definition.(But maybe I'm just a stick in the mud; I don't care for the "...for idiots" line of books either...)

The cons above might not seem that important, but overall they just leave a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.I'd normally give the book about a 4 given all the "pros" -- there would have to be a lot that really stands out to garner a 5, and it just isn't there -- and then knock another half point off for the "bad taste," ending with 3.5.Amazon doesn't allow that, so in thinking it over I decided the bad taste was enough to round down rather than up.

I would like to see the authors continue to write; they do have a light and informative style I enjoy.I'd prefer that they'd add in more advanced material and be a little more objective about who their audience is and just how close Bill Gates is to the messiah.(Granted, these days he's in stiff competition with Steve Jobs...)

5-0 out of 5 stars Windows7 Secrets
a good book to get through for a lot of the tricks to work within the Windows7 environment....a good reference book for the hidden gems that are available, but not obvious within Windows7 on the surface. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic way to get started with PowerShell
If you want a concise, practical introduction to PowerShell, and a book that you can refer back to later to quickly look up syntax you've forgotten then this is the PowerShell book for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book. Not for beginners.
I like the book - it's a very thorough reference guide. But I'm a PowerShell beginner so the book ran out of usefulness pretty quick. Still, it's going to be great if you have some background and decide, "how would I do this specific task?"This book probably has the answer, and it's written as it says - a reference guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars When You NEED to KNOW - You've Got to KNOW
This Book has it all right at your finger tips! Microsoft has done a superior job in expounding and down to the depths in PowerShell 2.0 with details, details, details - with How to's including images. Including the important information(s) of the possibilities "if you do this, then you might experience that" - with cautions, warnings, et cetera.

I MUST STRESS THIS EMPHASIS - Please take your time in reading this book! Do not rush through this, having a highlighter, colored pencil, write in it, make notes even though it comes with notes - read it all over again. While it does discuss both PowerShell v1.0 and v2.0; you will learn about both as well as the differing betwixt the two which can be very important to know in various areas. Especially for Businesses and Corporations that are working with both 64 bit and x86 aka 32 bit platforms.

I strongly recommend this book - this one is not going to be the one to be "thrown away or tossed aside" for one will want to return back to it for it is loaded with answers if one were to ever "run into a jam", in my humble opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Blessing
I got the book last night and I all ready read two whole chapters, I'm still learning how to use command line. But so far this book is fool proof, pretty detail and real world scenario. If you want to learn Powershell get this book trust me using linux, DOS, and CMD.exe commands in the same shell what more do you want.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good balance of material
This book has a good balance of foundational information and practical applications of Powershell 2.0.If there was a version of this for Powershell 1.0 I wish I had known about it.:-)The author assumes that you have some background in scripting so it doesn't come across as a pure beginner's book. The book provides practical examples for Powershell in the Windows environment and some background information on each subject. It has an appropriate balance between detail and maintaining a "big picture" view of teaching you about how to use Powershell.

The only request I make of the author in a future edition is to provide a little more coverage on loading assemblies through the Reflection.Assembly class. This is a minor issue though because he does discuss when to use it and of course one can always consult the online Microsoft documentation for additional methods.

Some of the big pluses in the book include a "real world" view and I particularly liked the quick overview of SQL Server support and how to add the supporting snapins to the basic Powershell environment - that saved me a lot of time!

Overall, one of the better books out there on the subject for those interested in a hands-on approach. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book
I had to get this book for a computer graphics:imaging class I'm taking at university of baltimore. The book was to be used as a reference book for us and not necessarily a textbook. I find it very easy to use. It is especially helpful when at home doing an assignment. There's no teacher at home to ask a question so just go to the index and bam you can find what you generally in two chapters (one maybe indrotucing the tool or function and another demonstrating it in a more complex piece). It's a good book overall.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
its a great book, full color pages and easy to understand.the pictures are based off of MacOS.required textbook for the fashion institute of technology.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant surprise
I like to order a Missing Manual and an easy visual start manual for each software product.I ordered this product because it said visual. I was disappointed when it care because it was not as visual as the visual brand that I usually order. However, upon glancing through the book, I found that the information is great.I probably will stick to the usual visual manuals that I order in the future, but I indeed will use this book in addition to the others.

5-0 out of 5 stars What an overhaul
I've purchased Adobe 3rd party books over the years and I'm not sure if this was the intention, but the Visual Quickstart Guide for CS5 appears to me as a complete overhaul. Beautifully laid out, easy to find stuff, and even the screen captures (which are a big part of the book) are extra large.

Just wonderful. I wonder if the other upcoming Visual Quickstart Guides are overhauls too?

5-0 out of 5 stars A daily answers guide to R1 and R2
Stanek is the best of the best in computer writing for a reason. He's both a professional writer and one of thew few technical gurus Microsoft looks to. Thanks to one of Stanek's other books, I lead our deployment of Windows Server 2008 the first time. Now we're preparing for R2, I did my homework again and again chose one of his books to help me -- this one.

This book, Windows Server 2008 Administrators Pocket Consultant Second Edition, covers the R1 and R2 releases of Windows Server 2008. I found it had a good balance of both step by steps and expanded details. There are many new features in R2 and this one covers most of them and in sufficient enough depth. Whether you are working with R1 only or with both R1+R2, I can't see how you can go wrong with this one. ... Read more

A great perspective of the forgotten command line administration. A super reference for both new user to old school windows administrator.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT - In every regard!
With the move to Windows server 2008 and Exchange 2007, the command line has been a place that needs to be re-visited.Technology is forever changing, thanks to our friends in Redmond. This book, therefore, is the perfect companion to anyone that is on a server trying to get things done on a regular basis.

There are extensive examples and discussions about command line operations.I have been administering windows servers for a long long time and did not realize that there was so much hidden in the kernel that I dont know about.

This book will help you get stuff done.....if not teach you a new trick or two that you can show off with. The appendix has a dictionary type feel to it, allowing you to search out specific command line functions with examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Microsoft Windows 7", book

Having recently purchased a new computer with Windows Seven installed, I needed to bring myself up to speed using this operating system. It is vastly different from WIndows XP Pro, with which I was fairly proficient. This is the best way to do so, short of a class, that I know of. You can either go through the whole book and learn a little at a time, or cut directly to those items you need to know as soon as possible. Like other Operating System books Mr. McFedries has written, it cuts right to what you need to know and skips the hype and hoopla so common to other books of the genre. If I could only have ONE book about this operating system, I would take this one. Far and away, it is the best I have come across, and I recommend it without reservation.

Product Description

Through Euclid's Window Leonard Mlodinow brilliantly and delightfully leads us on a journey through five revolutions in geometry, from the Greek concept of parallel lines to the latest notions of hyperspace. Here is an altogether new, refreshing, alternative history of math revealing how simple questions anyone might ask about space -- in the living room or in some other galaxy -- have been the hidden engine of the highest achievements in science and technology.

Based on Mlodinow's extensive historical research; his studies alongside colleagues such as Richard Feynman and Kip Thorne; and interviews with leading physicists and mathematicians such as Murray Gell-Mann, Edward Witten, and Brian Greene, Euclid's Window is an extraordinary blend of rigorous, authoritative investigation and accessible, good-humored storytelling that makes a stunningly original argument asserting the primacy of geometry. For those who have looked through Euclid's Window, no space, no thing, and no time will ever be quite the same.Amazon.com Review
"How do you know where you are?" asks Leonard Mlodinow in his charmingmathematical history, Euclid's Window. This question and othersabout space and time grew out of simple observations of the environment bya select group of thinkers whose lives and brains Mlodinow dissects.Starting with Euclid, geometry has flowed out over the centuries, describing the universe, and, Mlodinow argues, making modern civilizationpossible.

This is not just a history of geometry--it's a timeline of reason andabstraction, with all the major players present: Euclid, Descartes, Gauss,Einstein, and Witten, each represented by a minibiography.

Lots of examples pepper the narrative to help readers achieve their own"eureka!" And it's impossible not to be staggered at the mathematical featsof these geniuses, accomplished as many of them were in the absence ofanything but observation and intense thought. Each story buildssatisfactorily on the last, until at the end of this delightful book, onehas a sense of having climbed a peak of understanding.

A working knowledge of basic geometry is helpful but not essential forenjoying Euclid's Window, and Mlodinow's chatty style lends itselfremarkably well to explaining these deep and revolutionary concepts.--Adam Fisher ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Book, Though Most of Its Coverage Isn't Unique
I was given this book as a gift, and after having it sit on my shelf for a long time, I finally read it. Or at least most of it (I'll explain later).

As with most pleasure books that are ostensibly about math, this one is really a combination of math, physics, history and a touch of philosophy. Although the title implies that it's about geometry, the book actually discusses a broad range of topics from ancient Greek philosophers, astronomy, Des Cartes and his coordinate system, Maxwell's equations, Einstein and his theories of relativity, and string theory to name only a few.

One of the things I like about this book is that it actually discusses concepts in non-Euclidean and how they apply to real life (e.g. cartography). Non-Euclidean geometry is something that seems to be very seldom discussed in laymen circles. Unfortunately, this book didn't discuss it enough. And other than this one topic, the book doesn't have anything really unique to discuss. That's not to say the read was boring, but why write about topics other authors have extensively discussed already?

Some last comments: the writing style is good (you'll probably laugh at least a couple times). There are a few egregious typos.
And why did I rate this book 4 stars instead of 5? Because it spends the last few pages discussing string theory. I personally think string theory is garbage, hence I didn't bother to read that part.

4-0 out of 5 stars Biographical history of particle physics
"Euclid's Window" traces the roots of particle physics, from the initial geometric work of the ancient Greeks, to Descartes attaching algebra to geometry, to Gauss and Riemann realizing that space need not be flat, to Einstein applying these ideas in the theories of relativity, to the particle physics and string theory as we know it today. These are just a few of the mathematicians and scientists discussed. The book is not a history of geometry as the subtitle suggests, as Mlodinow only takes the parts that are relevant to the current physics-based explanation of the world (membrane theory) and the quest for a grand unified theory and how geometry fits into it. The story along the way is very engaging and entertaining, revealing both the life and times of the people that invented the various theories we use today, as well as lucidly explaining the theories themselves (even string theory). I highly recommend the book for both entertainment value and educational value, though I must qualify this statement: Mlodinow makes a few blunders along the way with dates, fills in some details with his own imagination, and interjects his opinion quite frequently. You might walk away from the book thinking that Ed Witten is the next Einstein (not to discredit Professor Witten, as he has made very important contributions). Mlodinow most noticeably leaves out contributions from the ancient Indians and Chinese, and only briefly mentions the Arabs- basically taking a very Europe- and American-centric point of view...take it or leave it, but I can't help but agree that these are the people that took us from the parallel postulate to quarks, gravitons, and so on. Historical context is cherry-picked to support the anti-Christian and anti-antisemite (basically pro-Jewish) opinions of the author, which isn't to say the points aren't valid. As you will discover in reading the book, Christianity killed (literally) the ancient Greek science, and has impeded the return of logical thought and science ever since.

So we don't have complete historic rigor here- I say who cares. Mlodinow has written a story with few geometric sketches and even fewer equations, not a textbook. If you want the usual dry history of "and on April 12, 1652, Hermann von German discovered this phenomena while rowing a boat across a lake," or page after page of equations, then I'm sure there are many other books out there to satisfy your needs. So, take the finer points with a grain of salt (if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is- except for C.F. Gauss) and enjoy the ride of learning about the people behind the math and physics. This is still a great book that I would recommend to those interested in math and/or physics.

5-0 out of 5 stars fabulous!
this is the only history book I have ever liked. great stuff if you like physics or geometry

5-0 out of 5 stars "The book of nature is written in mathematics" Galileo
"The book of nature is written in mathematics."Galileo

If writing around 1632 Galileo was right that the book of nature is written mathematics then Leonard Mlodinow's book is a kind of Cliff's Notes version.

Mlodinow is a highly experienced writer who collaborated with Oxford's Stephen Hawking when they wrote A Briefer History of Time and his understanding of the material as well as his ability to write accessibly both abound in this work which traces mathematics from the time of Euclid to its present place of prominence on the frontlines of string theory.

Along the way, Mlodinow gives biographies of some of the critical figures like Euclid himself, Descartes, Gauss, Einstein and finally Ed Witten...interestingly enough who works out of the same Institute for Advanced Study that Einstein worked out of in the years prior to his demise.

What makes the study so fascinating is that it tracks a body of study...mathematics...which endeavors to describe reality. In the beginning the story started with Euclid and his fifth postulate...the assertion that parallel lines don't meet.

While it's true that Euclid's postulate produced a self consistent mathematical system, it's also true that eventually (and by eventually I mean like over two thousand years later) it was discovered that you can create yet another self consistent mathematical system which says that parallel lines do meet.

In other words, Euclid created a ruler which is great for measuring flat spaces but later mathematicians in collaborative effort created a special bendable ruler which can measure curved spaces...like a ball.

The significance of this later discovery was made all too obvious when Albert Einstein asserted that gravity bends space...making it more curved and less flat.

So as can be seen the story here is an important one which tells us nothing less than the true emerging story of the universe in which we live and its origins.

5-0 out of 5 stars Euclid's Window - A highly enjoyable walk through the Math Timeline!
Having a lifelong interest in 2 and 3D "geometry", this walk down memory lane into the future of mathematical theory and application was most informative, enlightening and a learning experience. Being introduced to many personalities old and new such as Edward Witten was a real treat!Mlodinow's approach caused me to think and ponder and his humorous style and personal experiences kept me very interested! I cannot wait to finish "The Drunkard's Walk". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Only Game in Town...
But a good one!You do have to be a reasonably accomplished ASP.NET developer to even follow along in this book. But you picked it up to write your own WIF app, so that was pretty much a prerequisite. Excellent information from an expert, that really saves you a good deal of time from hunting it all down on the web.The technical content is balanced well with practical suggestions and applications.I appreciate how Vittorio explains what works, what does not work, what he hasn't seen, and what doesn't work very well. That sort of information can save lots of time in programming wild goose chases. Those 2 factors make the purchase of this book worthwhile by saving you lots of time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best in the market so far
Currently I am using WIF and AD FS 2.0 to protect WCF services on Azure platform.I collected and read tons of articles/white papres available online, still didn't get a very clear picture. Finally this book became available, I read it from cover to cover. This book is the best WIF book available so far.It covers everything, Web applications (ASP.NET), Web services (WCF services), delegation including ActAs and OnBehalf, and finally Azure platform. The first few chapters cover generic topic and ASP.NET, then a chapter covers WCF, finally Azure platform. A must have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource to get started with WIF

Having followed Vittorio's work (blog, webcasts, code samples)related to claims-based identity over the last two-three years, I ordered this book as soon as it arrived. And this book did not disappoint.I read the book cover-to-cover within a week of its arrival and found it to be very useful in helping me better understand the concepts behind WIF.

Here are some additional details that I hope will be helpful to anyone considering this book:

1) Claims based identity is an important enabling technology that .NET developers and designer need to understand well. And this is not just case, if you are an ASP.NET or WCF developer. Claims-based identity is important even if you are SharePoint, BI or Azure developer.

2) This book is broken up into two parts. The first part explains the basics of claims based identity. Second part is more advanced and gets into the nuts and bolts of WIF.

3) Don't skip over the ASP.NET chapters (2, 3 & 4 ) just because you are not going to use WIF inside ASP.NET.These aforementioned chapters cover a number of important concepts ( such as single-sign-on, claims transformation, federation) that you will need to understand when using WIF outside of ASP.NET (say with WCF).

4) Beinginvolved with the WIF team for a long time, Vittorio is able to provide important context around how some of the features have evolved, design decisions etc.

5) Last but not the least, it is hard to write a book on security. Fortunately, Vittorio has managed to write it in a conversational, unassuming style that makes it easy to read. Wherever needed, he provides a just in time, overview of protocols ( WS-Trust, WS-Federation and so on) without getting mired in the details associated with these, rather arcane, specifications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book and the only one so far
This is a very good book, the author knows extremely well what he explains, provides a great introduction and the example of using the driver's license or passport as a valid identification from a trusted issuer provideron a movie theather or liquor store is an excellent analogy to understand. He goes quickly about how to use it on your own app, how to get claims backs and create custom code to extend the framework. Also he gives a lot of deep theory about the authentication process and all the complexities of security and how WIF makes things easier for you. He mentions how to create a test STS using WIF (new Visual Studio template that comes with the framework), that can be used during development to simulate a real life scenario and how to create your own custom claims.

I read the book, I have a better understanding, 200+ pages of great wisdom. Get it!!

Thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent WIF resource
This is a must have for any anyone tasked with writing claims aware applicatons.Do NOT let the size of this book fool you either - it is jammed full of critical details. This is the only publication available that goes into the detail that Vittorio goes into.Whether you're new to claims-based development and just want to know enough to get started writing Relying Party's (that's about the first 50 pages), or need the in-depth knowledge of how protocols work, intricate details of WSFAM and SAM, and such, this book has you covered.I also like how Vittorio draws attention to solutions to some common problems, such as home-realm discovery, pass through claims, impersonation, proof-of-possession, custom STS's, and more. You will also find references to some very useful tools to aid in your development. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Handy and comprehensive
I've read many of the authors books and always enjoyed his writing style. This one's as complete a guide to Windows 7 as I've found, even better than the Missing Manual and Inside Out books. One of the rare computer books I've actually read in its entirety too. The first few chapters are exceptional for customization and optimization. Definitely worthwhile.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
Out of all the Windows 7 books I looked at, this was the most clearly written and I'm glad I bought it. As compared to others, it was so much better. To say this book has been such a huge help in my studies would be an understatement. Everything I've wanted to learn about was covered in excellent detail and I've learned so much for this book it has more than paid for itself.

1-0 out of 5 stars A lot of pages for so little information
I have been frustrated each time I go to this book for information.I NEVER find the information. It's beyond me how he can write so many words and say so little.Probably my biggest disappointment is the Index. I have NEVER gone to the index and found what I was looking for.I'm a long time user of Microsoft Windows products, so I'm already familiar with most of "how it works" topics, so it amazes me how this author can write much and leave me hanging wanting for more details. I cannot recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent detail and comprehensive
The best training manual for Windows 7 available. Detailed instructions and numerous tips. Not a dummies style book but more of an instructors manual. Very thick. I wish it would come in smaller sections so I could read it in bed.
