Product Description
Offers a non-technical overview of all the major areas in the computer processing of human speech: speech recognition; speech synthesis; speaker recognition; language identification, lip synchronisation; and co-channel separation. The text's intuitive approach uses illustrations, analogies, and both historical and state-of-the-art descriptions to explain relatively complex concepts. Specifically, it helps the reader learn the professional jargon used in different areas of speech processing, evaluate speech processing systems for specific applications, understand how the various technologies of speech processing actually work, identify practical applications for speech technology in the commercial world, and relate speech technology to actual spoken language. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
I tried to use this book for a survey course on computer speech technology, but I couldn't rely on it for much.My students cursed me for making them waste their money on this book.It doesn't talk about the material at a sufficiently high level or with enough detail to satisfy even non-mathematical college students seeking a general overview. One wonders who the intended audience is?The preface says it is professionals in the field of speech (other than engineers), and I can testify it certainly doesn't work for students. The chapters that do go over some of the mathematical underpinnings of speech processing do it in the most unsuccessful of non-mathematical ways, which is to say equations are presented but are not properly explained for those who don't already know what they are about. There is really very little meat here to chew, on a subject that deserves more.Stick to the engineering books if you actually want to know anything about this subject. There is still no alternative but to learn all the math.

4-0 out of 5 stars Computer Speech Technology - A great way to start
If you are not into FFT's and HMM's, but are interested in a slightly less mathematical explanation of Automatic Speech Recognition, this is for you.Interesting, and an easy read, watch out though, the next book you get willgo math on you fast. This is a great book for non-engineers.You willeveltually out-grow its simple explanations - but that does not make a poorsource. The book does not talk down to the novice - in the finiesttradtion of Carl Popper! - Well Done ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Brode scope but not self consistent
The book took very nice and broad scope of Signal Processing.
Unfortunately not all subjects are disclosed self-consistent.
The best benefit I get from chapters where the subject was already familiar from other sources.
I could not recomend this book for initial aquintment with Signal Processing, although with some previous knowledge the book could be interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars well-written and extensive coverage of speech processing
I had the pleasure of being a student of the author's at MIT when the course notes that later became this text were under development. Having learnt about speech processing from the author and these notes, I can knowlingly comment on the clarity and depth of the material in the text and can recommend it with confidence. The book takes the reader from a fundamental review of concepts in signal processing and probability/stochastic processes through the broad range of areas in speech processing. That the author is a leading researcher in this area is reflected in the coverage of recent research advances and a bibliography that can point the conscientious reader towards current publications if desired. I strongly recommend this text to anyone interested in learning about signal processing in the context of speech. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars from HCI International News, Number 12, September 2005
(Disclosure: I, the review-poster, am the author of the book. I clipped this review from the HCI International News, because it seems fair and helpful. However, the author of the review [who is only identified as "AM", but who is probablyAbbas Moallem, the editor of HCII] did not 'rate' the book, and Amazon won't allow one to post a review without a rating. So, the 5 stars are from me, not the author of the following review. I think it deserves that many, or I wouldn't have written it, but I am not impartial. Here's the review...)

This book is an excellent resource for anyone who is interested in voice interaction design. The author, in a very descriptive and practical way, provides not only background knowledge about voice interaction design but also extensive and valuable guidelines for creating and designing voice interaction. After providing an ample description of several concepts, such as speech (chapter 2), sound and meaning (chapter 3), and language usage ("Doing Things with Words," chapter 4), the author extensively covers the principles of voice interaction design and provides guidelines-from building dialogues to evaluating techniques of voice interaction. A variety of case studies along with multiple examples makes the book very attractive to interaction designers. Occasional long, philosophical discussions and difficult vocabulary might frustrate some readers who are in a hurry to get to the author's point, but with patience they will discover the usefulness of the lengthy discussions. The book provides an extensive related bibliography and an excellent glossary of terms, especially useful for the novice reader in this field.

Product Description

The telephone marks the place of an absence. Affiliated with discontinuity, alarm, and silence, it raises fundamental questions about the constitution of self and other, the stability of location, systems of transfer, and the destination of speech. Profoundly changing our concept of long-distance, it is constantly transmitting effects of real and evocative power. To the extent that it always relates us to the absent other, the telephone, and the massive switchboard attending it, plugs into a hermeneutics of mourning. The Telephone Book, itself organized by a "telephonic logic," fields calls from philosophy, history, literature, and psychoanalysis. It installs a switchboard that hooks up diverse types of knowledge while rerouting and jamming the codes of the disciplines in daring ways. Avital Ronell has done nothing less than consider the impact of the telephone on modern thought. Her highly original, multifaceted inquiry into the nature of communication in a technological age will excite everyone who listens in.

The book begins by calling close attention to the importance of the telephone in Nazi organization and propaganda, with special regard to the philosophy of Martin Heidegger. In the Third Reich the telephone became a weapon, a means of state surveillance, "an open accomplice to lies." Heidegger, in Being and Time and elsewhere, elaborates on the significance of "the call." In a tour de force response, Ronell mobilizes the history and terminology of the telephone to explicate his difficult philosophy.

Ronell also speaks of the appearance of the telephone in the literary works of Duras, Joyce, Kafka, Rilke, and Strindberg. She examines its role in psychoanalysis—Freud said that the unconscious is structured like a telephone, and Jung and R. D. Laing saw it as a powerful new body part. She traces its historical development from Bell's famous first call: "Watson, come here!" Thomas A. Watson, his assistant, who used to communicate with spirits, was eager to get the telephone to talk, and thus to link technology with phantoms and phantasms. In many ways a meditation on the technologically constituted state, The Telephone Book opens a new field, becoming the first political deconstruction of technology, state terrorism, and schizophrenia. And it offers a fresh reading of the American and European addiction to technology in which the telephone emerges as the crucial figure of this age.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Work of Art
This book is a masterpiece of typography. This is not mentioned enough on the amazon page here. As the book delves further into the schizophrenic/paranoid meditation on the concept of telephones, the text parallels the writing's insanity in the form of angled passages, strangely uncomfortable size variations, and some truly mind-bending blurred words. I was very intrigued by the notions of the telephone and its place in our world. It truly is an insane machine that we all take for granted. The book is very verbose, but anything less would undermine its authority and its lingual nature. I have to emphasize again how much value this book holds as a physical object. It is tall and narrow, black with subtle raised squares on the cover. The masterful use of text inside amplifies the sense of mystery and dread relating to its subject. It's like a tome, containing the untold secrets of our docile little telephones.

5-0 out of 5 stars Avital is Cool--
those who want to protect the "integrity" of academia would not enjoy this book, but what can I say? Avital is a punk. She does not ask you to love her. Yet I find her writings generous; those who always feel to be orphans of society can understand what is going on in this book as well as her "Crack Wars" and recent "Stupidity." She is very much interested in transforming the world. I am contiually inspired by her writings. Aside from Nietzsche, she is the only one who has shown me that philosophy can be rock n roll.

4-0 out of 5 stars jarred old coots
Ronell is the new scholarship. Praised be. Her style is innovative and she actually has something new to say about dead white guys. It's high time professors on respirators retired anyway. PS: She's the CHAIR of German Lit., Dr. Geezer.

1-0 out of 5 stars Jarring is not the word
It is rare to encounter work so devoid of analysis coupled with boundless arrogance, and, literally, an attack on the reader's intelligence in advance of any argumentation. It's a bad, telling sign that the first wordsof the volume announce to the reader that the book "is going to resistyou": even Miss Ronell knows all too well the weaknesses of the textshe has produced! Why not responsibly address critical objections to thesubstance of the text, which her opening remarks indicate she's obviouslyhad, instead of claiming on an a priori basis intellectual brilliance nodissenting critic could possibly possess? This is a sad inaugural maneuver, one that fails to be masked by even the most elaborate typographical games."Jarring" is not the word for this book.

Product Description

Cross-layer design seeks to enhance the capacity of wireless networks significantly through the joint optimization of multiple layers in the network, primarily the physical (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) layers. Although there are advantages of such design in wireline networks as well, this approach is particularly advantageous for wireless networks due to the properties (such as mobility and interference) that strongly affect performance and design of higher layer protocols.

This unique monograph is concerned with the issue of cross-layer design in wireless networks, and more particularly with the impact of node-level multiuser detection on such design. It provides an introduction to this vibrant and active research area insufficiently covered in existing literature, presenting some of the principal methods developed and results obtained to date. Accompanied by numerous illustrations, the text is an excellent reference for engineers, researchers and students working in communication networks.
