Product Description

Current access paradigms for the Web, i.e., direct access via search engines or database queries and navigational access via static taxonomies, have recently been criticized because they are too rigid or simplistic to effectively cope with a large number of practical search applications. A third paradigm, dynamic taxonomies and faceted search, focuses on user-centered conceptual exploration, which is far more frequent in search tasks than retrieval using exact specification, and has rapidly become pervasive in modern Web data retrieval, especially in critical applications such as product selection for e-commerce. It is a heavily interdisciplinary area, where data modeling, human factors, logic, inference, and efficient implementations must be dealt with holistically.

Sacco, Tzitzikas, and their contributors provide a coherent roadmap to dynamic taxonomies and faceted search. The individual chapters, written by experts in each relevant field and carefully integrated by the editors, detail aspects like modeling, schema design, system implementation, search performance, and user interaction. The basic concepts of each area are introduced, and advanced topics and recent research are highlighted. An additional chapter is completely devoted to current and emerging application areas, including e-commerce, multimedia, multidimensional file systems, and geographical information systems.

The presentation targets advanced undergraduates, graduate students and researchers from different areas – from computer science to library and information science – as well as advanced practitioners. Given that research results are currently scattered among very different publications, this volume will allow researchers to get a coherent and comprehensive picture of the state of the art.

Product Description
Autonomous agents or multiagent systems are computationalsystems in which several computational agents interact or worktogether to perform some set of tasks. These systems may involvecomputational agents having common goals or distinct goals. Real-Time Search for Learning Autonomous Agents focuses onextending real-time search algorithms for autonomous agents and for amultiagent world. Although real-time search provides an attractiveframework for resource-bounded problem solving, the behavior of theproblem solver is not rational enough for autonomous agents. Theproblem solver always keeps the record of its moves and the problemsolver cannot utilize and improve previous experiments. Other problemsare that although the algorithms interleave planning and execution, they cannot be directly applied to a multiagent world. The problemsolver cannot adapt to the dynamically changing goals and the problemsolver cannot cooperatively solve problems with other problem solvers. This book deals with all these issues. Real-Time Search for Learning Autonomous Agents serves as anexcellent resource for researchers and engineers interested in bothpractical references and some theoretical basis for agent/multiagentsystems. The book can also be used as a text for advanced courses onthe subject. ... Read more

Product Description
This thesis presents an approach to learning good search guiding heuristics for the supposition-based theorom prover E in equational deductions. Search decisions from successful proof searches are represented as sets annotated clause patterns. Term Space Mapping, an alternative learning method for recursive structures is used to learn heuristic evaluation functions for the evaluation of potential new consequences. Experimental results with extended system E/TSM show the success of the approach. Additional contributions of the thesis are an extended superposition calculus and a description of both the proof procedure and the implementation of a state-of-the-art equational theorem prover. ... Product Description
Generating Abstraction Hierarchies presents a completelyautomated approach to generating abstractions for problem solving. Theabstractions are generated using a tractable, domain-independentalgorithm whose only inputs are the definition of a problem space andthe problem to be solved and whose output is an abstraction hierarchythat is tailored to the particular problem. The algorithm generatesabstraction hierarchies that satisfy the `ordered monotonicity'property, which guarantees that the structure of an abstract solutionis not changed in the process of refining it. An abstraction hierarchywith this property allows a problem to be decomposed such that thesolution in an abstract space can be held invariant while theremaining parts of a problem are solved. The algorithm for generating abstractions is implemented in a systemcalled ALPINE, which generates abstractions for a hierarchical versionof the PRODIGY problem solver. Generating AbstractionHierarchies formally defines this hierarchical problem solvingmethod, shows that under certain assumptions this method can reducethe size of a search space from exponential to linear in the solutionsize, and describes the implementation of this method in PRODIGY. Theabstractions generated by ALPINE are tested in multiple domains onlarge problem sets and are shown to produce shorter solutions withsignificantly less search than problem solving without usingabstraction.Generating Abstraction Hierarchies will be of interest toresearchers in machine learning, planning and problem reformation. ... Product Description
This book lays out the theoretical groundwork for personalized search and reputation management, both on the Web and in peer-to-peer and social networks. Representing much of the foundational research in this field, the book develops scalable algorithms that exploit the graphlike properties underlying personalized search and reputation management, and delves into realistic scenarios regarding Web-scale data. Sep Kamvar focuses on eigenvector-based techniques in Web search, introducing a personalized variant of Google's PageRank algorithm, and he outlines algorithms--such as the now-famous quadratic extrapolation technique--that speed up computation, making personalized PageRank feasible. Kamvar suggests that Power Method-related techniques ultimately should be the basis for improving the PageRank algorithm, and he presents algorithms that exploit the convergence behavior of individual components of the PageRank vector. Kamvar then extends the ideas of reputation management and personalized search to distributed networks like peer-to-peer and social networks. He highlights locality and computational considerations related to the structure of the network, and considers such unique issues as malicious peers. He describes the EigenTrust algorithm and applies various PageRank concepts to P2P settings. Discussion chapters summarizing results conclude the book's two main sections. Clear and thorough, this book provides an authoritative look at central innovations in search for all of those interested in the subject. ... Read more

Product Description
Sashiko - the traditional Japanese style of decorative quilting - has long been admired around the world. Unfortunately, the painstakingly slow process of stitching the motifs by hand and the start-and-stop hassles of stitching by machine have discouraged many of today's sewers from trying this ancient art. Now the process is easy with author Mary Parker's continuous machine sewing technique. Begin by preparing a pattern with heat transfer markers, then simply transfer the colour pattern onto a piece of temporary stabilizer or interfacing and then onto the back side of your fabric. Place sashiko thread in your bobbin and them simply sew over all of the lines in one colour. More than 100 designs are featured in a stitch dictionary, with each one shown as a photograph of a sewn sample and as a colour-coded pattern. The patterns are organized by level of difficulty and are accompanied by fascinating tidbits explaining their history and how they are formed. Complete, step-by-step instructions for 25 distinctive projects are included, most of which can be customized by choosing different patterns, fabrics, or specialty threads.Create your own custom fabrics with allover sashiko designs and then use the fabric to make unique wearables, or create incredible sampler bedspreads, wall quilts, and table runners using your favourites designs from the pattern dictionary. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners
I'm new to sashiko, and this book didn't offer much help. It has lots of designs and nice photographs, but the nitty gritty details (how to start/stop stitching, which needle to use, etc) were missing. When the author did offer specifics, she assumed the reader already knew the steps (she said to tie a square knot then a half hitch knot but didn't describe how). The author emphasized continuous machine stitching, yet most of the designs featured parallel lines. Doesn't that mean a lot of starting and stopping? The projects were attractive, but there were few step-by-step illustrations for how to make them.

In short, if you're an experienced sewist, you'll probably get more out of this book than I did. If you're a beginner, you might enjoy reading about the history of sashiko and seeing the beautiful designs, but you won't feel ready to start sewing them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good mini for drawing those big machines
Mecha Manga is the first follow up to this series of pocket sized reference book which started with Manga Tips. However, the cover of the book I got is different.

The sketches in this book are consisten with the previous book, still simple and well made, but good enough to drive the lessons home. This is how this book is divided:

introduction
equipment
form and structure
mecha components
weapon design
materials and textures
mecha world
1. basic mecha
2. military mecha
3. animal mecha
4. industrial mecha
5. service mecha
6. chibi mecha

This book has sevelar introductory sections that teaches you how to go about drawing several parts related to mecha. These conform 67 out 192 pages!Every subsequent sections includes a small gallery with illustrations that can be used as a guideline or inspiration.I was very impressed with weapon design, materials and texture introductory sections showing how to draw metals, flames, lasers, ion and plasma beams, particle blasts, electric arcs.

This reference book may not replace much larger books about drawing mechas, but it is much easier take with you on the road. ... Read more
