3-0 out of 5 stars Ok for a "get your feet wet" book.
I stumbled on this book while cleaning out a cube and gave it a read.Obviously, this is a dated book.

Overall, it's an ok very basic introduction to Perl. However, it could create some bad programing habits so it should not be viewed as a resource for building core skills nor should you consider it a reference book.

Probably it's biggest value was that it showed how to do things in NT.But there are many resources for that now.

I was surprised that it attempted to talk about object oriented programing and CGI in 2 chapters. These topics have filled books.

So what is the value of this book?Well. If you have little money, then it's ok. Just remember to use strict and use warnings in the examples. Those two will save you grief and start you with a good programing habit. Don't take the book as gospel. Use it as a way to see some examples as what Perl can do.

After you read the book, look for the Perl docs and some sites like the perlmonks. That will get you on your way and in time you will see this book would not serve as a reference book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
This book is a very quick and organized way to get up and going in Perl.By the end of day 7 (day seven will take more than a day if you do it right) you will have a good Perl foundation.

I have the Camel book that I go to from time to time (Camel has more humor and more technical content), but I use this book as my primary reference because of it's easy layout.

If you serious about Perl, also buy the Camel book as a deeper secondary reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better organized that Larry's famous book
This book is better organized than Larry's famous book and it is easier to find information in it.

It is a great reference work and tutorial.

2-0 out of 5 stars Covers material, but better know programming.
The first impression is the large number of typos in the code.It seems to work well for teaching 'what' works in Perl, but totally skips any 'why' structure. It comes off as an infinite number of special exceptions.Someadvice, such as in the Pattern Matching chapter is just plan wrong.Seemsto have slipped out without being editted.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!! The right way to go.
I have no background in programming, but also wanted to learn some scripting language to automate my tasks for administering Windows NT network. A friend of mine recommended me about Perl and i bought this book. And now i am a proud owner of this book. ... Read more

Product Description
The documentation currently available from Microsoft on implementing TCP/IP in a Windows environment is largely insufficient, as are the available third-party materials. This leaves a large information deficit for the readers to fill in for themselves, especially at the high-end of the market Inside Windows NT: TCP/IP will cut through the complexities and fill that deficit providing the most informative and complete reference book on Windows-based TCP/IP topics. The book will be a tutorial-reference hybrid, focusing on how Microsoft TCP/IP works, using hands-on tutorials and practical examples. Concepts essential to TCP/IP administration will be explained thoroughly, then related to the practical use of Microsoft TCP/IP in a serious networking environment. The book will begin with coverage of TCP/IP architecture and advanced installation and configuration issues, then move on to cover routing with TCP/IP, DHCP Management, WINS/DNS Name Resolution, as well as the future of TCP/IP.

-As the community of administrators utilizing Microsoft TCP/IP matures, their need for reliable, technically-focused information is increasing

-The documentation currently available on implementing TCP/IP in a Windows environment does not meet the needs of the serious system administrator

-This book focuses on how to implement and build applications using the latest TCP/IP advances, approaching these topics from the perspective of the networking professionalAmazon.com Review
As you may gather from the title, Windows NT TCP/IPturns with laser-beam intensity to all facets of the Internet's linguafranca--TCP/IP--and how it operates within a Windows networkingenvironment. For those already well versed in the wild world ofWindows, this volume may be overkill, but for those new to TCP/IP asmanifested within the Windows embrace, it's the answer to a prayer. Tobe truthful, even the NT expert can make use of this easy-to-followand thorough reference guide, as it includes chapters on advancedfunctionality (such as configuring TCP/IP using Perl scripting and theWindows NT registry).

Penned by Dr. Karanjit S. Siyan (one of theoriginal architects of the TCP/IP protocol), Windows NT TCP/IPcovers each TCP/IP networking base while not shying away fromdetail. These TCP/IP-related topics--as well as the Windows NTarchitecture itself--are covered quite granularly. Also handy is themarket and historical context Dr. Siyan provides for various protocolsand technologies, which helps to explain the success of a relativeantique like NetBEUI. Windows NT TCP/IP holds the hallmark ofany reference book worth its salt; the volume is jam-packed withuseful diagrams, charts, tables, and specific commands. Another winnerfrom New Riders, Windows NT TCP/IP offers something foreveryone interested in Windows NT networking. --Sarah L.Roberts-Witt ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, wonderful Reference/amazing beginner's Guide too
The attention paid in this book on IP Itself is worth praising, too many books hand you too little of everything to be of any real use. I have found this to be superior to the Oreilly book, even though that is a fine book in itself. I have read Comer's books on IP itself, and no wonder its the yardstick in IP books, that of course gets a little too detailed or abstract interms of "what can I use now" for some. Karanjit nails the issueof IP and NT with authority and precision for a reader on a beginner tomedium level. Unless you want to really get into hardcore IP, or even ifyou want to, this book is great as a good "getting started" Guideand also as a confidence builder for someone new at this, given that NT isshowing up everywhere, the reader can try the small utilities as she goesto see what all this on paper is about in real life. Looking forward to its2000 Edition.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not nearly as good as the O'Reilly book
I saw the mixed reviews on this book and went over and checked the ones on O'Reilly's Windows NT TCP/IP Network Administration by Hunt & Thompson.I didn't want to buy both so I went down to B&N at the mall and sat onthe floor reading through them. The O'Reilly book is much better. This oneis a typical New Riders book. In other words, not as as good as theO'Reilly. I wonder if all the anonymous reviews for this one were reallywritten by the author. This isn't really a horrible book, but if theO'Reilly book deserves 5 stars this one only deserves one.

5-0 out of 5 stars very good
el libro me parece que es excelentes para aquellos que comienzan a manejar un server de NT para la distribucion de Internet, sobre todo en seguridad

5-0 out of 5 stars I like this Book.
The first Iread it I wonder wheter there is another one like it

5-0 out of 5 stars Written for the Senior Systems Administrator..great choice!
If you want to go deep into Windows NT and TCP/IP this is the book that will take you there.I found it goes far beyond the basics of what most books cover. As an MCSE I can tell you that if you want to be an "NTGOD" then read this book!

It covers all the important aspects ofusing TCP/IP in a LAN/WAN environment, but also includes GREAT in depthtopics such as DNS, IIS (Web and FTP), and PERL on Win32.Where else areyou going to find all of these topics covered in one book?

This is notsome cheezy 800 page book of fluff with 3" margins and hugepictures..if you want that then keep on searching. This is a professional, well laid out, to-the-point book on Windows NT and TCP/IP.

I hated NewRiders' MCSE books - they were horrible. The new Landmark Series are greatand for the first time I feel a publisher has finally found the recipe thatO'Reilly uses and added some spice to it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is the manual that Microsoft forgot
The Manual that Microsoft Forgot Review of *Visual QuickStart to Internet Explorer 3 for Windows95/NT* by Eric Selje Once upon a time, much of the pleasure received from purchasing new software was diving into the manual, looking for little nuggets of information to make that program work. There was something about the 3-ring binder, the smell and touch of the paper, the poorly worded phrases of an overwrought programmer who suddenly finds themself a technical writer. In the last few years, the computer manual has gone the way of the manual transmission. With most software nowadays, it's a readme file and a help file, if you're lucky. Such is the case with Microsoft's Internet Explorer. The program is ubiquitous, and yet everyone is just supposed to know how it works, and all of its nuances. How are we to obtain this information?Osmosis? Well, Visual Quickstart Guide to Internet Explorer 3 for Windows95/NT is a very good place to start.Like all books in this series, this one too gets to the heart of the matter quickly, with screen shots to show you every step of the way. With a program like Internet Explorer, this approach works exceedingly well.Internet Explorer is an extremely visually-oriented applicaiton, without a whole lot of technical understanding necessary in order to use it.This book becomes the manual that Microsoft never wrote. Because Internet Explorer is none too involved, this book can cover almost every aspect of the program in its compact size.In regard to the browser, the author starts from what a browser and the World Wide Web are, how to navigate that space, how to organize your space, how to search the web, how to browse securely, and much more. This book not only covers Internet Explorer, but also its two cohorts: Internet Mail and Internet Newsgroups.Addressing e-mail using the Windows Address Book, attaching files and signatures, receiving mail, and more are, um, addressed. In the newsgroup section, the author explains what newsgroups are, how you can read and post to them, how to encode and decode messages, and how to work off-line, among other topics. Throughout the book, there are helpful tips to make your experience with Internet Explorer better.I found most of these tips to be genuinely useful, and not just rehash of obvious ideas or statistics. The tone of the book is very down to business, although there are subtle touches of humor if your looking hard enough. It's not irreverent like the Dummies or Idiots series. Reading this book harkened back to the time when you could discover the mysteries of the software by reading the manual.I would recommend this book to everyone who uses a computer, because when Microsoft gets its way, we'll all be users of Internet Explorer. Visual QuickStart Guide for Internet Explorer for Windows95/NT was written by Steven Schwartz and is published by Peachpit Press. It retails for a mere $16.95 ... Read more

A friend of mine recommended this book to me several years ago.Uponreading it, he went from a job as a roofer to an MCSE professional makingsignificantly more money.I bought and read it, and was amazed how Heywoodwas able to explain very complicated concepts in a very understandable way. I achieved MCSE status as well in short order, largely relying on thisbook, and tripled my salary. No guarantee, but this book covers a greatdeal of the material you need to know to be an effective Microsoft expert. I passed the MS TCP/IP exam using only the TCP/IP chapter as preparation. For those of you wanting to achieve MCSE status before the 12/31/00deadline, pick up this book and read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will help you pass the exam
This is a good book. It contains a little more than you need to know to pass the exam. It can also be used by a novice who simply wants to learn NT. I would strongly recommend it if you can afford spending $70. One ofthe problems is multiple errors, although the errors are minor. The otherproblem is that the book is simply too big to carry around - it's over 1000pages, of which only about 600 pages are useful text, and the rest aresample tests and appendixes. The chapter tests are good to help understandthe material, but you won't see them on the actual exam. Another thing isthat in addition to chapter test, there is also the self-assesment test andthe mastery test, both of which simply repeat the capter questions indifferent order. They don't help much, and could have reduced the size ofthe book by at least 200 pages. I didn't find the CD useful at all. Itshould have contained the book's text, but it doesn't. All you will find isthe chapter tests and 2 other tests (see above)in not very usable format. Finally, the publisher was in such a rush to release the book, that theymissed the appendix that contains lab exercises. You will have to downloadit (along with errata) from Que's web site.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could do better
It is basically a good book, but getting it released has clearly been a rush job. There were many typing errors and even some of the diagrams were scrambled. To be honest its quite shocking that this ever got past any proof-reading procedures. On the positive side though, the book was easy to read and well presented and I would recommend it but for the price.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book, but Contains ERRORS
At first I was impressed with the amount of information, but then horrified at the frequency and severity of documentation errors. On page 178 it even says you can create an Emergency Repair Disk by running "winnt /ox" which in reality creates Setup boot floppes (3 disk set).An Emergency Repair Disk is created by running"rdisk /s".In the sample questions on the CDs there are also errors similar to this, as the 'answer' contradicts information presented in the book.I was very disappointed having paid $70 for a book that contains such obvious errors.I would recommend the Microsoft materials over this, as well as reading through TechNet as it does NOT contain errors such as this. Also, On Page 93-94 of "Windows NT Server 4.0 Enterprise Exam Guide looks as though Figure 5.1 and Figure 5.2 are reversed.Figure 5.2 says it will be "efficient" when in fact every BDC for the network is on the wrong side of the 56k link.A minor error but still not acceptable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent one-stop source for passing this exam.
This book covers everything you need to know to take the exam with confidence. Also a super reference to keep on hand.

CD-ROM practice exam questions show you where you are weak.Chapters are broken down well to allow you to zero-in on these areas."Key Concept" text boxes alert you to specific things that will be on the exam.

Chapters 20-22 go into extensive detail on troubleshooting.Great for overall knowledge.Overwhelming if you think all details could be on exam....they're not! ... Read more
