4-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginers, not for deeper issues though..
My boss told me to "set up an NT server", I had worked with NT before, but never set one server up by myself. It is great for beginers and covers most of the first things you need to know. But when you covered thebasics and go back for a reference a coupple of months later you will notfind the depth you like. When i wanted to know how comressing a drive wouldaffect the over all preformance it simply says:"We don't see the pointof a server using compression with the price of a harddisk today". Andthat is not the kind of anwser i was looking for. so if you are a newbe, goahead, if you wanta reference book, look for something else. But it isstill a very good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply useful
Easy and understandable -- much advice about planning. Best book for someone starting a network.

3-0 out of 5 stars An introductory text
The book is an introductory text to Windows NT written in simple and engaging style. It introduces the basics, hardly deep enough to really run an NT server. Hence the low rating. It will not make NT systemadministrator of you. If you aspire to be one, Inside Windows NT Server isa book to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars jumper start for NT beginner
I just finished reading this book borrowed from Central Library, actually I still want to renew it, but another guy has booked it. Considering its one volume, it has covered from basic domain management to enterprisemaster domains trust. It's easy to understand with quite a number ofgraphics and illustration. It's a basic reference book on your bookshelf ifyou don't need too much in-depth knowledge of NT.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Primer
I thought the book was chock full of usefulinformation.I started with a blank hard drive and a cardboard box full of software and with my keyboard in one hand and the book in the other I had my NT 4 Server up andrunning an Intranet Web home page on IIS 4.0 via my new Ethernet LAN injust a few days. This is a great book to buy if you are starting fromscratch and you haven't yet decided to spend the extra money to buy the NT4 Server Resource Kit. ... With the release and success of Windows NT 4.0, there is a lot of ongoing Windows application development. This book will take a set of advanced programming topics such as database programming, Internet and network programming, multimedia programming, etc., and address the following: concept details of the programming topics the programmer should be familiar with; programming examples to illustrate the concept; programming Notes the programmer should be familiar with; error situations the programmer is likely to run into, known problems, workarounds, etc. The programmers using this book are expected to have experience developing C and/or C++ programs in the Windows environment, preferably using the Win API (Application Programming Interface) family. The average programmer typically uses a small subset of the total programming capabilities of Win APIs and NT and then comes across a need to develop applications using additional capabilities. This book will show them how to do just that. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Advanced or Simple ?
I've seen people arguing whether this is a advanced or simple windows programming book. This is actually not an issue worth debating. This book is a piece of cake for windows gurus while much tougher for beginners.

For people who rated this book a one star complaining about the simplicity of it, I would say it's their problems not having a brief look at the contents before purchasing. It take only a couple of minutes for a real windows guru to tell whether a book is worth buying or not. My view is that the book is advanced for people who are new or relatively new to windows programming.

The author did a good job on the different aspects of windows programming. You, as a reader, will have a good knowledge on what the windows operating system can do in general and where you can get started when you want to do a specific job.

Keep in mind that the book is more concerned about what the window's operating system can do for u as a programmer. It's not a MFC book or DirectX multimedia programming book. Go find something else if you are just looking for a book concentrating on one specific area of windows programming.

I rate this book 5 star because i think this book is comprehensive and practical for most people. I don't rate it a one star complaining its "simplicity" because the only advanced windows programming "book" talking about every aspect of windows is MSDN which is impossible to put into one book.

1-0 out of 5 stars easily the worst book i have ever seen on programming
The book mostly throws buzzwords and sample codes to you out of nothing. You cannot follow what the writer had in mind while he was sprinkling concepts so randomly.

I learned nothing from the book and would adviseyou not to get a copy

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Advanced at all...
Absolutely unbelievable. Take basic information from various "help" sources add, in some wizard generated code, and sell it as an advanced programming book. When I saw the reviews I was hopeful thatthis book would cover advanced networking, COM, and DB topics. This isbeginner stuff with no insight whatsoever. To top it all off, there was noCD included with the book as advertised. Someone else must have returned itin haste as I am about to do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for real programmers
I enjoyed this book very much, especially the section on ActiveX which was crystal clear. Can't wait for the next edition of the book when NT 5 hits!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book
Excellent book. The book is very focused and simple to follow. The examples are to the point and self explanatory. ActiveX , thread Synchronization etc. which were magical words now seems so simple. This I can say for all other topics also. The whole book follows a very nice flow. I am personally extremely impressed by the book and would like this opportunity to congratulate the two author for "A job very well done". I would also urge the authors to give us a book on DCOM as there is a vacuums of good book onthis topic. ... Read more

Product Description
Scripting provides system administrators an optimal means of automating tedious and time-consuming application, configuration, and management tasks. In addition you can take advantage of new capabilities offered by VBScript, ADSI and Windows Scripting Host. ADSI is particularly important in light of the upcoming release of Windows 2000, as it provides a means of accessing functionality in the Active Directory Microsoft's highly-publicized directory service.ADSI allows for cross-functionality with directory services in other computing platforms, which is critical since 90% of all enterprise networks comprise multiple platforms. This book will provide system administrators with solutions to automate and simplify the configuration and management of their networks. The author will present expert tips, code development and proven in real-world enterprise environments.Amazon.com Review
Microsoft Windows scripting support has taken off recently, and Thomas Eck has done a lot of useful work at the cutting edge of this technology. In Windows NT/2000 ADSI Scripting for System Administration, he documents the Active Directory Service Interfaces (ADSI) as they apply to systems administrators interested in using Component Object Model (COM) objects written in Visual Basic to automate administrative tasks. Because this book is backed by such a considerable development effort, administrators of large Windows NT and Windows 2000 networks will be able to put its ADSI solutions to profitable use immediately.

Though he does provide a conceptual introduction to ADSI and the services implemented in Active Directory, Eck's book is all about code. Code listings appear in quantity. It's one recipe after another, collectively covering hundreds of administration tasks, with minimal commentary on each solution. After all, this is a book for system administrators, and the idea is that they're not so much reading to become programmers as to see the assortment of tools they can use to solve problems.

Though more explanation of the code wouldn't hurt, administrators will be very pleased with the work Eck has done on their behalf. Typical solutions include scripts that add a user to a group, retrieve a computer's processor type, enumerate the groups a user belongs to, and reset all locked-out user accounts in a domain, plus a pair that start and stop an Internet Information Services (IIS) site. Many more scripts populate the pages of this book and its supporting Web site. --David Wall

Topics covered: Active Directory and the Active Directory Service Interfaces version 2.5 (ADSI 2.5), with emphasis on programs that manipulate users, groups, computers, services, and various resources automatically. Other programs perform administrative work on the Internet Information Services (IIS) metabase, Internet sites, and Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) services. ADSI and VBScript references appear as appendices. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Source for ADSI Code & Nature of Operation
This is the best book I have used so far on ADSI.The book presents a huge amount of sample code, objects, properties, and methods which act as a source for developing scripts to manipulate network objects. The data is not only provided in Visual Basic format, but also in VB script format. Many underlying priciples of how the code works and what parameters must be met for successful implementation of ADSI scripting are explained.I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is great for Web Site Administrators
This book will prove invaluable to those who deploy multiple web sites in a redundant environments. If you are deploying web applications over mutliple servers and would like to get away from using the MMC for creating each and every web site then I would recommend getting this book. The book clearly explains how to write automated scripts that can be used to deploy web sites to a single server, or across an enterprise.Creating a web site includes multiple tasks such as FTP accounts, FTP virtual directories, Web site virtual directories and more. This book explains each facet clearly and you can pick and choose the parts that you want to sew together to create an automated system. Now, the only thing I'm wishing for is an ASP book that is written as well so I can create a web interface for the scripts I'm creating.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding menu of code snippets to make life easier!
I am revising this review as I again return to this book.I am constantly surprised just how good this book continues to be. With all of the poorly written and just plain wrong computer books out there, this book continues to be a lifesaver.

When I need to find out how to do something in ADSI, I go to the index, within a couple of minutes I have a prototyped, mostlyworking application. This book is worth every penny I paid for it and then some.

This book has so many different examples that I went through and wrote a management application just by taking the code snippets from it and combing them to do what my application had to do.

It doesn't explain the differences between NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 implementations. But, it does cover most of the functionality built into ADSI.Also, there are some things that are built into ADSI that are counter-intuitive, but the author goes into a sufficient amout of detail to get you going on your way.

It is the best treatment of ADSI I have come across both from an administrators point of view and a developers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nearly useless
Avoid this book if you can...

The author tries to get away with repeating the same paragraph and example over and over and over, and not have to actually explain anything. You finish the book with a lot of code snippets, which are of very little use unless you either know the subject (in which case you wouldn't have bought this book in the first place), or you are trying to do exactly the kind of work described in the book. This is nothing but a cookbook, and a bad one at that.

A seemingly hefty reference closes the book. But a closer examination reveals that it's no more that a quick listing of properties and methods (with little distinction made between the two) of some of the ADSI COM interfaces. The text and reference are exclusively VB oriented, and will frustrate all but the most inexperienced programmer.

If you are the kind to cut and paste JavaScript code and then go on to call yourself a programmer, this book is for you. Otherwise, I'd suggest you look elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't even think about it, BUY THIS BOOK.
If you're relatively new to ADSI control with VBS or VB, you'll find a few annoyances where more practical detail would be helpful. Otherwise, the book is thick with excellent coverage and sample code. The indexes are also well done with a great code library at the back. You'll come back to this one over and over again. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Most useless book on my bookshelf
I have had this book since it came out in 1996.When I found it, I was excited - I thought it was going to give me all of this great systems administrator level information about Windows NT.I happily picked up a copy to keep on my bookshelf for reference.I am _still_ awaiting the day where this book is going to give me some useful information.

Over the last 4 years I've come across numerous situations in which something funky was going on with my NT box and I needed more information to diagnose the problem.Every time, I've gone to this book. Not ONCE has the book had an answer to my question! But, the book is SO huge, I keep thinking that there really MUST be some question out there I'm going to have that it will answer.Yet, it always amazes me with a complete lack of an answer -- typically in the form of "see your System Administrator".Uh, hello? What book are system administrators supposed to get then?Or what if you run NT at home and don't have a system administrator? This book touts itself as if it's the book FOR system administrators and then it tells them to "see their system administrator." (ayeeee!)

Thank god I'm just a programmer, not a sys admin and thus only disappoint myself when I can't find the answer.I just remain baffled that Microsoft could fill 1300 pages without an ounce of useful information.

Anyway, I've upgraded my NT systems to 2000 so I'm going to chuck the book -- just thought I'd offer a warning to others about it before it went completely out of my memory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still the definitive WinNT reference!
This book, along with the Windows NT Server resource kit, provides the best reference to how NT works on a day-to-day administration level. (For even more detail, go get the excellent "Inside Windows NT" book from MS Press.) This book teaches things like automated setup, policies and profiles, how the registry works, and everything else a good NT admin needs to know. It's much more comprehensive than the online help, and the price is right for such a useful book. There are other thousand-page tomes on administering NT, but this is the best one I've read, and should be the starting point for every admin.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Technical Must Have for the Power User
Senior Network/Systems Administrator

A must-have for the NT Power User. Both robust on theoretical knowledge about OS architecture, internals, etc. and rich in tips, tools, advice, right-on-target details and hands-onexamples about utilities usage. Strong chapters include Deployment,Security, Printing, Tuning and Optimization, File system, Recovery,Troubleshooting, Registry, OS startup, compatibility, Networking and eventhe NT debugger. Rather common content for NT books, but this one is reallypacked with useful information. It isn't so much an on-the-spot problemsolver. Yet this very technical book is an excellent reference on manyadvanced subjects for which information is not easily found elsewhere. Itis also the kind of books that can actually be read from cover to cover :it provides the solid, in-depth, detailed knowledge of the OS that allserious NT administrators should have. Don't go without it.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Ho Hum Book
I bought the book back in 1996 when I needed something to augment the software. I'd say the average rating at this point, 3 1/2, is a bit high. This is an average book. I can see where it *might* be of benefit to someusers, but it has always seemed to me surprisingly short on details. There're some good explanations of things but in my view they tend to beoverviews. In three years of use, I don't think it's solved more than twoor three problems, and they were not of any great consequence. The CD-ROMincluded with the book has been of no help. The book strikes me as havingbeen written by a number of people without a real focus. IMHO it's morelike a dictionary or reference, and its focus is like them.

I thinkslightly higher of Mansfield's book, Windows NT 4 Workstation. At least, ithas some more practical and easily useful info that's easier to read.Norton has a book on this subject, but I have no idea of it's quality. Ifyou're into networking and the server side of things, try Mark Minasi'sMastering Windows NT Server 4. It's applicable to Workstations too.

SinceWindows 2000 will be available in about 2 months, Feb. 2000, this book maylose its relevance fast.

5-0 out of 5 stars #1 NT Resource
If you are serious about administering NT, and are not just interested in passing exams for the quick buck, this book is for you. When I received my MCSE in 1996 there were very few study aids and test preps. I used the WKS and Server resource kits to pass the exams. I also learned a lot more aboutNT than was needed for the exams, but was essential in the real world. Nowthat the MCSE is worthless, maybe you should learn something useful aboutthe operating system, rather then waste your time memorizing testquestions. ... Read more

The first partof the book is an excellent overview of Windows NT Server and keyMicrosoft technology and terminology pertaining to the enterprise. Thefirst chapters cover the architecture, network protocols, domains, workgroups, layered drivers, and more. The second part, consisting ofthree lengthy chapters, addresses installation andconfiguration. Rather than merely address the key steps, Minasipresents information about important related topics such as theredundant array of independent disks (RAID) for fault tolerance andthe Windows NT registry.

Part three consists of over 400 pages ofwell-organized discussion on administration; everything from usermanagement to interfacing with Macintoshes and working with theWindows Terminal Server is covered in detail. Throughout the book,Minasi presents useful sidebars that answer common questions about howto perform specific tasks.

The final seven chapters coverenterprise issues such as interconnecting Novell NetWare networks, troubleshooting, optimization, disaster recovery, Remote AccessServices (RAS), and Internet Information Server (IIS). These sectionsaddress advanced issues and complete the book.

Whether you'relooking for a guide to learning Windows NT Server or something to bailyou out in the field, this definitive work is an excellentchoice. --Stephen W. Plain ... Read more

everyone out on the job in the ICT-world should have this one ! I can't wait for the W2K edition to come out !

5-0 out of 5 stars How Mark Minasi's Book Helped Me Get My First SA Job
I wish there were a place where you could rate the "Author" and not just the book.I own many of Mr. Minasi's books and he never fails to meet my expectations of just how much information he can successfully impart to the reader.I stress the words "successfully impart" because this author's style is so clear and his analogies are so "on point" that he is able to make you understand concepts that other books fail to properly convey.Oh and as an extra:he throws in his quirky sense of humor, thus bringing some welcomed comic relief to those of us who read dull tech stuff all day long. This book is the first "Mark Minasi" book I ever owned and I haven't stopped buying books authored by him since.
At the time I purchased this book, I already owned two other books which endeavored to teach NT 4.0 Server.
Plain and simple:after reading this book from cover to cover I was able to obtain my first job as a junior system administrator.I failed to meet that goal with the other books.
I am currently enrolled in a course to prepare for the Windows 2000 MCSE.Of interest to all those pursuing this same path I say this:While studying for the W2K tests I referred constantly to this book in order to put into perspective the changes in Windows 2K relative to Windows NT 4.0.
One last note: The TCP/IP section in this book is incredibly well written.Mr. Minasi takes a very esoteric topic and lays down a brilliant foundation for the beginner.
More than saying I would recommend this book, I say... I would recommend this Author!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Always a pleasure to read.
Mark always writes in such a way that he make the driest of subject interesting to read. Yes sometimes there is some stuff in each chapter. A sidetrack or extra information that's not necessary. However that is what makes him so easy to read. I often find myself reading long after the time I allotted myself to. One topic always leads my interest to another. This ease of reading greatly helped me obtain my MCSE, with earlier versions.I bought this update to NT 4.0, as it's being phased out, to get the latest and greatest for SP6. I purchase and have read threw months ago, sorry it has taken me so long to write the review. As with all of Marks books, when there is a revision (which SP6 created the need for), it's worth getting. I will be able to better support my Windows NT 4.0 servers until they're in there grave.I also recommend his Windows 2000 books, which I own a few of. The only thing I miss about Marks writing is his PC Upgrading & Maintenance book. The best thing about this author is he writes like he talks and talks like he writes. If you get the chance to hear him speak, you'll buy all of his books on topics you need. I came to this conclusion when I attended a tech. conference, Chicago in April of 2000. Thanks, Mark

5-0 out of 5 stars This is THE Book
If I had just one reference book for NT 4.0, this would be it. It gives you all the information you really need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressed in Glasgow
I bought MasteringWindows NT Server as comprehensive reference for troubleshooting& aid to full knowledge & understanding that underpin exam success in the MCSE program. It is outstanding & merits my 5-star rating for the above purposes because, as someone who has taught about computing for 15 years, I have NEVER come across another work which combined readability with such a high technical level and such comprehensive treatment.Since reading it I have passed the MCSE exams in NT Server, NT Workstation and Networking Essentials. ... Administrators spend much of their time and energy on workstation problems, those user and logon problems that keep the helpdesk phone jingling. From forgotten passwords to user-caused destruction of workstation environments, the problems are ongoing and unremitting. Some administrators have a real instinct for these kinds of problems; they "smell" the source and know right away what the solution is. Most of us, however, have to assess the problem logically. This book helps you take that approach. This book covers:

  • Lockouts and freezes
  • Forced password changes
  • Replication and execution problems with the Logon Script
  • Local, roaming, and mandatory profiles
  • Domains and servers, the Network Neighborhood, and peripherals
  • Control of user activity
  • Remote administration on NT 4.0 and Win9x workstations
  • Command Line incantations

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best!
For years I've been buying books from O'Reilly because they make my jobeasier. Running a large system across multiple sites, multiple domains, with thousands of users isn't exactly a snap.

Managing Logons is withouta doubt the best written O'Reilly book the publisher has ever put out. While many O'Reilly books are filled with excellent technical detail, they're generally not written all that well and sometimes that makes itmore difficult to get through them. You have to move slowly becausesentences and paragraphs aren't always clear on the first reading. They'realso often not very entertaining, which means you tend to read in shorterspurts.

This book is a model of perfect writing.I couldn't put it down. The author writes with clarity, and you feel as if an experienced humanbeing who actually has a personality is having a conversation withyou.

The second reason this is the best O'Reilly book on my desk (whichhas more than a dozen O'Reilly books) is that it provides the best of twoworlds, a wonderfully clear overview of the technology in addition todirect instructions on how to perform tasks. Many of the O'Reilly books Ihave (and treasure) only provide technical overviews, you have to buyanother book (or spend time in front of a computer) to learn how to performtasks.Of course those tasks are easier and safer to perform if you readthe overview first, especially if you get your information from the kind ofexperts that write O'Reilly books.

I've solved so many problems with thisbook, some of which dogged me for years. Before I read this book, I appliedworkarounds that actually reduced efficiency, but at least the errors wentaway. Now user logons are smooth and I can incorporate all the features Iwant into the logon processes because I learned how from this book.

I'mnot sure I want to migrate my networks to Windows 2000 until Kathy Ivenswrites her Windows 2000 version of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!
I am a technical trainer and have started recommending this book to all of my students. This slim volume helps solve many of day-to-day NT problems and includes a great amount of very useful information. This book has someof the best information I have seen to date reguarding the integration ofWindows 95 and 98 clients into NT networks. The author consentrates onuseful real world information.

I only wish this book had appeared earlierin NT 4's life. I hope the author has started the Windows 200 version ofthe book

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must" for your NT bookshelf
Managing NT Logon is not only packed full of good, hard-to-find information, but is concise, well-organized, and beautifully written.Every two or three pages I found myself saying, "ah hah... so THAT'Show that really works!"The section on the boot.ini file was a tourde force.I have a bookshelf with about 2 dozen books on Windows NT, someof them quite thick, yet Iven's book was the first to clearly explain theboot process, related files and functions, and possible problems in a waythat connects directly to our network operating environment.Even if youthink you know everything you need to about the NT logon process, this bookcould surprise you. Lucid, useful, satisfying, and an excellent value.

4-0 out of 5 stars A book that helped with lab management

1-0 out of 5 stars Definately not for beginners
I have had great difficulty trying to get the example programs to run. Code snippets are missing include files, some code produces errors that I cannot resolve. Very frustrating.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad- not great either!
This book covers a LOT of OpenGL material. The first 3 chapters of the book are great, with a few exceptions. He doesn't explicitely state that you must link OpenGL32.lib and Glaux.lib to your application before you'reable to use those libraries in your app. - 1 star!By the 4th chapter, thereader (or at least I was) ready to jump into 3d programming. However, bythe 4th chapter, I became discouraged because the author suddenly assumesthat you have entry-level windows progamming! I didn't... thus, that's asfar in the book I got. Why did I still give it 3 stars? Because it deservesit! It covers a lot of material, and if you already have some experience inwindows programming, I'd rate this book higher (to a 4). This is a greatbook- if you know windows programming to a certain (basic) extent.

3-0 out of 5 stars OpenGL Superbible
I found this book dropped off precipitously in substantive content after the first few chapters. It is adequate for a novice but quickly became inadequate when trying to obtain a deeper understanding of OpenGL.Agreewith reviewer who said title should be different, and to some extent, sharethe "UGH" reviewer's sentiments.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ugh!
This book is not what I'd expected. Expecially from the reviews its gotten. I have VC++ and right off the bat I couldn't even get the 1st example to work. Finally after searching all over the place I found outthat I had to link a few DLL's, which the book fails to mention. Not a coolbook at all. Ugh!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book...
I have read this book, and think it was a good book. Since I'm not on the Windows-platform anymore (i've moved on to Linux :-) there were much Windows-specific information I didn't want, but the book is forWindows-programmers... but I think it was a great book on OpenGL though! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Very Useful
I felt the book greatly lacked depth into topics. It seemed to only cover some of the remedial basics. It is not a very good choice for someone who really wants to leearn how to effectively use this program. It also doesnot serve too well as a refence manual.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not helpful on any topic.Below basic.
Well below the manufacturer's manual. Not worth spending time or money

5-0 out of 5 stars Use this book if you are new to CAD
Autocad LT 97 was the second book I tried to use to learn Autocad. My goal was to learn AutoCad LT by myself. The first book (bought last year) that I tried was AutoCad LT by Omura. It was very difficult to follow fortwo reasons.First, I needed a book for the extreme novice.Second, Mr.Omura's book is about Autcad release 3.0, which differs greatly fromrelease 14.Mr. Grabowski's book is clearly written, informative, and knowingly focuses on the challenge faced by the beginning CAD student. He starts each section by explaining the goals, and he also shares theperspective enjoyed by the high end CAD person, one who is in it every day. This book is excellent for the beginner and intermediate student.Itincludes a CD with all the drawings you have to make already done.Aftermaking each one of these at least 6 times, I learned even more by openingup the same drawing from the CD, one that was done by an expert.I thinkyou will need at least two books to learn AutoCad LT97 well enough to makemoney at it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow tutorial guide, but without enough detail
I am converting from a DOS Cad program with which I am intimately familiar, to AutoCAD LT.

This book gave a useful tutorial guided introduction to the package (although most of the stuff is intuitive if youare familiar with Windows and CAD concepts).

What the book lacks is adetailed index, or in fact much detail at all about CAD operations.

After2 evenings I already need to buy a more in-depth reference book.

Andrew

2-0 out of 5 stars The book is inaccurate about AutoCad LT's abilities.
I found "AutoCAD LT 97 for Windows 95/NT" to not point out the real potentials and had some statements that it could not do things that it could do very well.In reading the book I felt the author was playing downthe importance of AutoCAD LT 97 and its abilities. The book did have somegood material to help out a beginner. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very good for teching!
This is a very well done book that has made it much easier for teaching the concepts to new and aspiring administrators.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely well written and illustrated-not overly technical!
This is not a training manual (with chapter quizes, etc.).It is,however, the BEST source I've seen for grasping an understanding of TCP/IP(as in MCSE candidate). It is extremely well written, and the grahicillustrations are a tremendous help to someone like me (I'm a visuallearner who easily forgets things that don't have a graphic or otherstimulus). Let's face it, when you start talking about a bunch of 1's and0's running around inside of computer or across a network wire, that's alittle hard to relate to without something tangible.I'm studying forMCSE, and I use this as a reference source to clarify voids in my trainingmanuals. This resource has crystalized many things which were just"vapor" until Bisaillon/Werner.Again, the graphics, supplemented by understandable text, is the answer.I'd highly recommendthis to any person seeking better understanding of the subject withoutbeing overly technical. Finally, I might add, so many of these computerrelated books/manuals are loaded with typo's, spelling and punctuationerrors, poor grammar, and outright mistakes; but NOT this one.I haven'tread the book cover-to-cover, but I also haven't noticed any mistakes. That's refreshing! My hat is off to the authors for a such a superb job!

4-0 out of 5 stars A pleasant, quick way to get your network running.
I managed to add TCP/IP, DHCP, and RAS to a buggy NetBeui Network in just a few days by following the examples in the book.Fell a bit short for me on the theory and advanced topics and I couldn't contact the authors, but it served it's purpose well.Glad I found it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very well written overview of TCP/IP focused on NT.
This is not only a book on how to configure TCP/IP functions on NT but also a very good overview of the internet protocol.Does an excellent job reviewing the IP protocol and all of its layers including some of the more interesting applications.Excellent reference material and a good read. ... Product Description
As communications networks grow in size and complexity, it becomes increasinglydifficult to locally manage and control all of the devices (e.g., routers, servers, and workstations) on those networks. SNMP (Simple Network ManagementProtocol) gives you a way to manage network devices remotely. You can use SNMPto check on the performance of a network (and its devices), to find out whatproblems may be occurring, and to fix them. This book covers the implementation of SNMP on Windows NT 3.51 and 4.0(with a look ahead to NT 5.0), and Windows 95 systems. It contains:

  • The basics of SNMP, computer networking, and network management
  • Programming for NT SNMP; detailed developer information on installing the Microsoft SNMP service, using the Microsoft SNMP APIs, developing Win32 SNMP extension agents, implementing traps, and writing network management applications
  • Extensive references to additional SNMP books, Web sites, newsgroups, Microsoft documents, and other Internet resources
The book comes with a CD-ROM containing a wealth of additional information:standards documents, sample code from the book, and many third-party,SNMP-related software tools, libraries, and demos. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Actually a decent introduction to SNMP
I originally bought this book when it was released for a project involving SNMP. Of course the project was cancelled. There were two other attempts but they ended in cancellation.

Years and a couple companies later, I am involved with a project that will finally happen.

I dusted this book off (literally) and gave it a read. The information is dated as it mainly talks about SNMPv1 and references SNMPv2. There is a comment of a new project SNMPv3 and talks about the future NT5 ;).

Do not get this book if you are looking to design something with SNMP. The software was written in Windows 95 and NT 4 days.I didn't even bother attempting to load stuff from the CD.

However, if you are new to SNMP this book is surprisingly a decent introduction that can get you on your way for the greater tomes of today. Read the first part of the book on SNMP basics and maybe the trap chapter in section 2. Other then that don't bother with the programming aspects as they are dated.

Again for a couple bucks, it's not a bad intro. Too bad the author didn't update it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere
This books is awful. The SNMP tools provided on the CDROM do not load up properly. The source code does not address anything new or clever that you can't get from the MSDN. Save yourself the trouble of returning it (look elsewhere).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for a new-comer
I was tasked with the job of developing an SNMP agent.I knew what theacronym stood for, and that was about it.The more I found out, the more Irealized I had to do.I am still working on my agent development, but thisbook has gotten me well on my way.I have written an enterprise MIB,loaded it in the NT registry, and have a .dll which I modelled from thisbook... I still have a bit of work to do, but my MIB browser is recievingdata that I programmed the windows NT SNMP service to send!!GREATexamples!the CD has been worth its weight in gold!

3-0 out of 5 stars This book is out of date
I bought this book because of the title and I like O'Reilly books - concise and to the point.

This book is well written, concise and to the point. Part I contains an easy to read intro to SNMP. Part II contains somegood info on the NT SNMP services and writing extention agents.

HOWEVER,I was disappointed on the coverage on the management API. Why? Because thisAPI is obsolete. WinSNMP is now the standard, is available now and willcome with NT 5.0. Now I am not a great fan of the WinSNMP API (you can justtell it is from Microsoft - badly designed API and more complicated than itneeds to be). Thank goodness there is SNMP++ from HP - an SNMP C++ classlibrary which is available for free on multiple platforms including NT.SNMP++ on NT actually uses WinSNMP.

I'm glad I did the research on SNMPpackages for NT. If I had followed this book blindly I would have ended upwith a management application that may not run when NT 5.0 comesout.

This would be a great book if it was updated with the WinSNMP and/orSNMP++ API.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very well presented

I own a lot of books on NT Server (too many in fact) and this is one of my favorites.Anyone responsible for the support of NT Server should have this book without question.Curt Aubley has produced a book that is easyto digest yet comprehensively covers all aspects of optimizing NT Server inyour own environment.

It includes many ideas and suggestions that youcan implement immediately and see true performance gains. If you've everwondered, "What RAID configuration would be best for my newapplication server?"or "Which performance monitor counter isreally the best to use to monitor this or that?", then this book isdefinitely for you.

Let's hope Curt produces a similar book of the samequality for Windows 2000.This book sits right beside Mastering Windows NTServer by Mark Minasi on my desk, and between the two of these and Technet, one doesn't need much more to support an enterprise Windows NT 4.0environment.
