3-0 out of 5 stars A vision emerging.
This book was an ambitious attempt to describe both a vision of what personal computing could be and to providea much needed technical overview of Squeak.Although largely successful, the buyer should be warned that some chapters in this book refer to online software that has yet to be written or is not currently available online. In particular, Alan Kay provides an unintended joke with his forward to the book.He states that Squeak is a "dynamic medium for creative thought" and that the foreward to the book should be an online active essay in Squeak.Unfortunately, the essay, "It Should Be Active, But Where (and When) Will It Be?" does not yet exist!

As Squeak continues to evolve rapidly, this book may become obsolete in a few years, but it currently provides some of the best technical overviews of Squeak's Morphic UI, networking, 3D animation, and other fun topics. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Meant For People Who Do Multimedia For a Living!
The title make it seem like it teaches you more than the instruction manual does. If you have an understanding of complex animation programs such as Flash or After Effects you can figure out how to do the tricks this book teaches on your own. I thought this book would be a step above the basic...but I was wrong.

Someone who does not do multimedia for a living may think the presentations you create with this book are dynamic...but for those of us who know better...nothing dynamic here.

If you are looking to do really "good" multimedia in PowerPoint...find another book.

Product Description

Although vital to modern software development, Java and object-oriented programming can pose significant challenges to newcomers. This text, unique in both scope and approach and accompanied by an interactive CD-ROM , addresses that learning curve by providing a careful, classroom-tested presentation of Java -- from the fundamentals of variables, types, and expressions to procedural concepts like loops and sophisticated object-oriented ideas.

Multimedia Introduction to Programming Using Java anchors its pedagogy in the CD-ROM ProgramLive, a complete multimedia module in itself. Containing over 250 recorded lectures with synchronized animation, ProgramLive allows users to see, first-hand and in real time, processes like stepwise refinement of algorithms, development of loops, execution of method calls and associated changes to the call stack, and much more. The disk also includes all programs from the book, 35 guided instruction sets for closed lab sessions, and a 70-page hyperlinked glossary.

Additional key features of this work:

Provides clear and accessible treatment of all aspects of a first course, along with more advanced topics such as recursion, exceptions, interfaces, inner classes, and GUIs.

Introduces objects and classes early in the exposition, rendering object-oriented programming intuitive and natural.

Develops programs, rather than simply showcasing them.

Supports all concepts through complementary lectures on the CD-ROM.

Contains numerous self-help exercises that encourage readers to practice programming.

Emphasizes rigor and accuracy through user-friendly exposition and a flexible organizational style.

With its comprehensive appendices and bibliography, systematic approach, and helpful CD, this exciting work provides the key tools they needed for successful object-oriented programming. It is ideal for use at the undergraduate and graduate beginning level, whether in the classroom or for distance learning; furthermore, the text will also be a valuable self-study resource or reference volume in any programmerÆs library.

3-0 out of 5 stars Publishing error
Note for the public:

Springer, the publisher, has failed to include the CD in some of the new printed copies. This is a known issue. Considering that the other reviewers consider the CD the key benefit of this book, this is a serious error.

You may be able to get a replacement software download from the publisher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
One of the authors of this book, David Gries, is my Computer Science teacher and hearing his voice (and that of his son Paul) on the multimedia CD is a weird experience, but extremely helpful.I can't stand just reading textbooks, and the multimedia CD allows me to have an interactive learning experience and not just stare at pages. The book is great as well but the learning CD is really what stands out. There are videos, exercises, sample programs, labs, you name it.Very easy to learn Java with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars interested CD with recorded presentations
The multimedia CD is clearly the most distinctive aspect of the book. I found the recorded presentations to be quite interesting and these can be helpful to the Java beginner. They would specifically be useful to a reader who learns best from a live teacher than from text. But who, for whatever reason, lacks that teacher.

The text of the book is competently done. With Springer's usual technically accurate content. Though I can't say that the text is necessarily distinctive or better than other pre-existing texts on Java.

On a passing note, the CD's content must have been quite expensive to produce. Given that Springer's texts tend to be fairly small circulation, one might wonder if they will ever recoup the cost of development. ... Read more

Product Description
This book is the first to put forward a general theory of the manner in which different media--music, words, moving picture, and dance--work together to create multimedia. Beginning with a study of the way in which meaning is mediated in television commercials, the book concludes with in-depth readings of Disney's Fantasia, Madonna's video Material Girl, and Armide (Godard's sequence from the collaborative film Aria). Analysing Musical Multimedia not only shows how approaches deriving from music theory can contribute to the understanding of multimedia, but also seeks to draw conclusions from the practice and further development of musical analysis. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful theory of multimedia
This book provides original multimedia theory while at the same time being easier to understand than much academic writing. If you are studying multimedia, or just deeply interested in the topic, it is well worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Constructing Meaning Through Song
What is the role of music in advertising? When the music swells as a mother cradles her dying child in a film is it the music of the moment which captures our attention and emotions? These are the type of questions dealt with by Nicholas Cook in this intriguing journey into music's role in multimedia.

For something to be a medium does not mean that it is 'just' a medium. Cook rightly asserts that "the idea that anything can be 'just' a medium has... look precarious since the days of Marshall McLuhan"(pg. 261). Rather Cook upholds the value of the medium in the construction of meaning: "my argument [is] predicated on the assumption that media such as music, texts, and moving pictures do not just communicate meaning, but participate actively in its construction. They 'mediate' it." (pg. 261). According to Cook meaning in multimedia lies in the encounter between music and other media (pg. 270). If these ideas interest you, read this book. ... Read more

It was originally written by John Pfenninger, who created the National Procedures Institute, where doctors can take courses to brush up their procedures. I have the first edition, which is now in 3 pieces due to chronic use. 5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific overview of basic design
This book has a lot of clearly articulated suggestions for how to execute good design. As this is something that many of us struggle with, a good book on this topic is definitely needed, especially with so many projects emphasizing the look more than the content. There are lots of examples of just what constitutes good design and suggestions for how to improve. I wish this book had come out years ago!

5-0 out of 5 stars visual communication 101
As a non-designer often tasked with creating graphic materials for people I work with, there are two issues I find most difficult. One is convincing people that they don't need to fill every bit of a page with "something." The other is defending my design decisions with more than just "because it looks right." "White Space is Not Your Enemy" definitely helps me with both of those problems with its thorough coverage of design concepts written in clear language and supported by excellent examples and exercises. I definitely recommend this book for anyone put in the position of creating visual materials and unsure of how to get a result they won't be embarassed by.

5-0 out of 5 stars The design book for non-designers
What a great book this is. The way a design book should be done: not just a bunch of endless text but lots and lots of pics of what to do vs what is wrong with this picture kind of samples. This was the ideal book to get your feet wet in the design world. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the non-designer
This is a very well written, well organized, very engaging book.I'm typically a skimmer. This book immediately drew me in and I spent several weeks reading it cover to cover. The reason it took me several weeks was that I would read a bit. Then I would spend time exploring the concepts presented.I found as I read this book I looked more critically at visual images I encountered.

I am planning on applying the principles I learned in this book to a variety of media I work with as a hobbyist.I strongly feel it will help me redesign my web page as well as improve my cropping and overall composition when taking photographs.

I strongly recommend this book for anyone who is looking to find insight into how to better visually present information regardless of format.

4-0 out of 5 stars A decent text for true beginners
"White Space is Not Your Enemy" does a good job of covering the very basics of graphic design. It could be a good textbook for a Graphic Design 101 class, or a serviceable primer for a small business owner with no design background who wants to create his or her own promotional materials. It doesn't achieve enough depth to be useful to someone with even a basic foundation in graphic design.

I do some in-house design for the small school where I work, as well as a bit of web design. I'm certainly not a designer -- I do the design work because when you have five employees and a small budget, someone's gotta do it. I've picked up design basics over the years, mostly through paying attention to what I like, and also from talking to others in similar situations. I have no formal design background at all. This book reinforced what I already know, and "concretized" some things for me, but didn't really teach me anything new.

This is also very heavy toward print design, despite the sub-title emphasizing non-print media. Yes, much of what's applicable to print is also applicable to the web, and they do a good (if somewhat boring) job of explaining CMYK color vs RGB color, as well as resolution needs, and outlining the things any designer needs to be aware of, but I was expecting something with a little more emphasis on electronic and new media.

All in all, this would be a perfectly fine book to get you started if you just need to quickly pick up the basics of design. My only real complaint about it is that, somewhat ironically, the text is a little too small for comfortable reading (I don't wear, or need, glasses). My dad would probably be so frustrated with the text size, especially against the coated paper, that he'd give up on it.

If you're looking to dive a little deeper, as I was, or if you're looking for inspiration, look elsewhere. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Desperately needs updated
An excellent book, and truly one of a kind. But since Flash has become an Adobe product, released CS3 and CS4 and most importantly the transition from ActionScript 2.0 to 3.0, this book is in desperate need of a new edition.

It presents tutorials in a way that are actually useful to journalists, rather than useless and overly complex motion graphics. However some very simple coding is now impossible with this book, because of ActionScript 3.0. I found it very frustrating trying to do tutorials in Flash CS4, and not being able to follow the instructions because of updates to the program.

For a journalist wanting to know flash, McAdam's book would be the perfect resource if it didn't force you to digress in technology more than 4 years. Until a new edition is released, I'd have to recommend lynda.com over this book.

A plea to the author... Please update! Journalist and j-schools everywhere need this resource.

4-0 out of 5 stars 85% of perfect
Very clearly explained for people who have no experience in flash. However, it didn't get me all the way to where I wanted to be. I wanted to produce an audio slide show that featured a) faded transitions, b) synchronization to the audio track, c) seamless loading on the user's end, and d) dynamically loaded content for ease of re-use. Although the book teaches a, b, c and d individually, it never puts them all together; the "final project" doesn't incorporate syncronization or seamless loading, and the audio-sync slide show it teaches doesn't have dynamic content or faded transitions. However, I feel well equipped to pick up a more thorough flash book to take me the rest of the way, and I'm glad I started with this one (a more general starter book would likely have covered topics of no use to me, like advanced animation et cetera).

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book.Focused and complete.
This book is excellent. It has a mission and it executes it well. Its mission is to teach people to use Flash to communicate their ideas through images, words, and if necessary, sound. The book is structured with an introduction to communicating effectively followed by 10 progressive lessons for using Flash to accomplish the stated mission. The 3rd part of the book presents 6 case studies, real live examples of Flash in action. These case studies discuss the issue at hand, the approach that the designers, producers, and developers took to solve their problem, plus a technical tip that we all encounter when building Flash applications. An Appendix is included with additional information, such as preloaders, swf management, and video. The companion website takes this book from 5 stars to 10 stars. This is one of the best technical books I have ever read.It never looses sight of its mission. It marries technical technique to a functional objective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a book to learn how to do a multimedia piece right!
Finally a flash book that does not just show you how to make a ball bounce across a stage!

This is the book I recommend to aspiring multimedia journalists.

If you are a journalist who wants to go toward the online realm this is the book to buy, read and learn from -- I have always sent folks to Mindy McAdams' web site in the past -- now this new book she has done is even better.

Product Description
Multimedia information systems is a rapidly growing area of research and development, attracting increasing interest from a variety of application fields including business, entertainment, manufacturing, education, CAD, CAE, medicine, etc. Due to the diverse nature of the information dealt with and the increased functionality (e.g., user interaction), the capabilities and system requirements of multimedia information systems dramatically exceed those of conventional databases and database management systems. This book presents an integrated approach to interactive multimedia documents. After summarizing the prerequisites and background information, the author develops an IMD model taking into account interaction and spatiotemporal composition. Based on this model, the author develops an integrated framework covering most of the steps during the life cycle of an IMD, namely data modeling, authoring, verification and querying, execution and rendering, and indexing. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Indexing and information retrieval work properly only if language and interpretation are shared by creator and user. This is more complex for non-verbal media. The authors of Indexing Multimedia and Creative Works explore these challenges against a background of different theories of language and communication, particularly semiotics, questioning the possibility of ideal multimedia indexing. After surveying traditional approaches to information retrieval (IR) and organization in relation to issues of meaning, particularly Panofsky's 'levels of meaning', Pauline Rafferty and Rob Hidderley weigh up the effectiveness of major IR tools (cataloguing, classification and indexing) and computerised IR, highlighting key questions raised by state-of-the-art computer language processing systems. Introducing the reader to the fundamentals of semiotics, through the thinking of Saussure, Peirce and Sonesson, they make the case for this as the basis for successful multimedia information retrieval. The authors then describe specific multimedia information retrieval tools: namely the Art and Architecture Thesaurus, Iconclass and the Library of Congress Thesaurus of General Materials I and II.A selection of multimedia objects including photographic images, abstract images, music, the spoken word and film are read using analytical and descriptive categories derived from the literature of semiotics. Multimedia information retrieval tools are also used to index the multimedia objects, an exercise which demonstrates the richness of the semiotic approach and the limitations of controlled vocabulary systems. In the final chapter the authors reflect on the issues thrown up by this comparison and explore alternatives such as democratic, user-generated indexing as an alternative. Primarily intended for third-year undergraduate and postgraduate information studies students, the breadth and depth of Indexing Multimedia and Creative Works will also make it relevant and fascinating reading for information professionals working with multimedia and digital archives, and for multimedia developers, computer scientists and electronic publishing specialists. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Decent attempt
The book is outdated, unclear in its focus, and makes assumptions for the reader. This book provides only a poor intro to Squeak and poorly touches up on OO principles.Liu's Smalltalk book is probably where one would want to start to get both worlds. Worst, this book is used at Ga Tech for a class titled "Objects and Design."

Also, all the previous book reviews on this page were reviews of Squeak and Alan Kay as opposed the book.So their 5 stars are misplaced.

5-0 out of 5 stars You cannot afford to miss this book
This book is one of the early signs of the real computer revolution that is about to start, according to Alan Kay, a visionary from Disney, who, in essence, invented a computer world as we see it now. The book is about the language that is 3 times more productive than Java, and ported to 22 platforms. The language which domination is as inevitable as the dot-com crash. Mark is a member of the inner circle of Squeak development, so his knowledge of Squeak is superior. You will save yourself dozens of hours if you read this book. And this book just a pure fun to read. Get this book, it will change your thinking about computer programming forever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine Book on a Wonderful Language
As the author of several Smalltalk books myself, I tend to be a bit skeptical of new books about Smalltalk. But Mark Guzdial's excellent first book on the best Smalltalk implementation on the planet, Squeak, earns my highest respect. It is organized the way I suspect most people trying to learn a new language like such books organized. Rather than beginning with abstract concepts and thenhoping you will be able to use those concepts to solve specific problems, Guzdial takes a practical, project-based approach.

This book does not purport to cover basic object-oriented design and programming paradigms but in fact it does at least an adequate job even for a relative beginner. It is clearly aimed at someone who has at least a smattering of programming training or experience, but you don't really need much to derive great value from the book.

It is true that since the book was released there is a newer version of Squeak, but the good news is that the author had the foresight to include on the accompanying CD-ROM the version of the language on which he relied to make the book examples work. I've been working with the newer version for some time but reverting to the older version for the purpose of the book wasn't difficult or painful.

I believe that Squeak IS the future of all kinds of computing and development, including the Internet/Web world, and it will behoove you to learn this wonderful language sooner than later. There is simply no better way to do that than to start with Guzdial's work. He's the prototypical teacher and the book is marvelous.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great Smalltalk book
Good books for people wanting to get started in Smalltalk are hard to find. Particularly, those that are connected to a viable programming environment. This book is excellent on both counts. The associated Squeak programming environment is a solid Smalltalk-80 implementation that is being moved in new directions by a team at Squeak Central, now at Disney, led by Dr. Alan Kay whose team contains several of the early developers of Smalltalk. Dr. Kay also invented the concept of the DynaBook. Mark Guzdial's team is also working on a Collaborative DynaBook at Georgia Tech. Thus, this book is also a entry point into two hotbeds of R&D in leading-edge computing technology. Welcome to the future! Note: Squeak is free on a number of popular platforms.

4-0 out of 5 stars The only book about one of the best software systems
If you do not yet know Squeak or Smalltalk:

1. Download the current version of Squeak from squeak.org (the version on the CDROM is not the latest and greatest)!

2. Buy this book, read it and learn to Squeak!

3. Order the other book (not yet published) about Squeak edited by Mark Guzdial!

otherwise: do the same!

In both cases try to ignore the problems with the reproduction of some of the screenshots. ... Read more
