Editorial Review

Product Description
''(Mis)Understanding Families takes a refreshing look at home-school relations, with inspiring examples of how such relations can be reinvented in North American schools. The editors and authors issue an urgent call for repositioning the needs, experiences, and perspectives of diverse families at the center of educating the whole child. Educators and those who teach them would do well to take heed of the call.'' -- Susan Auerbach, California State University Northridge

''This book stakes out new ground in the area of home-school collaboration. The authors position parents, children, and their 'stories' where they belong, at the core of schooling, an approach that is not just helpful but vital to the well--being and education of all children.'' -- Kenneth Teitelbaum, Dean and Professor, Southern Illinois University Carbondale

This practical resource will help educators to identify, address, and meet the needs of the diverse families in today's classrooms. It is the first book to critically examine how families are represented in the media, schools, and other institutions and apply that information to building effective home-school partnerships. The authors examine how different relationships between families and teachers are defined by discourses that circulate through formal and informal curricula. They explore how families and educators can collectively reconceptualize these conversations to create positive educational experiences for children. Discussion questions are included in each chapter so that readers can examine their working relationships with the families of their students. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Problematic
Although written for early elementary schoolers, this work on Vermeer is so filled with factual errors that it subverts the goal of bringing young sensibilities to meet Vermeer's genius. From inaccurately stating the number of Vermeer's children to misrepresenting a portrait of a young artist as a self-portrait by Vermeer (it is rather a likely print made from a painting done by Michiel van Musscher, certainly not a portrait of Vermeer himself), from mischaracterizing Vermeer's St. Luke's Guild as an "organization for people who wanted to learn to paint" to a benighted explanation of Vermeer's painting technique, the book stumbles around relentlessly. Although there are generally good reproductions of some of Vermeer's paintings, the book shows an image of Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring that was taken more than 20 years ago, well before the painting was restored so masterfully in 1994. For the high cost of this book one can purchase many others that are much more compelling. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
In this book Svi Shapiro explores the ideological and attitudinal functions of schools, looking especially at what is called the 'hidden curriculum.' He offers both an analysis of the role of education in producing and maintaining attitudes and values that contribute to our competitive, socially unequal, instrumental, consumerist, and self-oriented culture and a radically different vision for what our schools should be about—a vision that focuses on education's role in supporting a more critically reflective, socially responsible, and compassionate culture.Federal and state legislation have propelled schools today in the direction of an increasingly test-driven, instrumental and individually competitive regime. Under these legislative mandates, schools are increasingly alienating and stressful places for both students and teachers. Most disturbing is that this form of education is not conducive to providing young people with the capacity to cope with the moral, cultural, spiritual and political challenges of the world they inhabit. More than only offering a critique of schools, Shapiro proposes a counter-vision that can lead to a different kind of culture and society and he discusses strategies for advocating and implementing it. Written in a style that is very accessible to a wide range of readers, Losing Heart: The Moral and Spiritual Mis-education of America's Children is also carefully researched and draws on relevant theory to make a strong case. This book speaks to a wide range of readers, including academics and students in education, sociology, anthropology, political science, and cultural studies; public school professionals; and the general public interested in education. It will appeal to faculty in schools of education who are looking for a text that offers both a critical language and one that speaks to possibility and change. ... Read more

Product Description
Totalitarianism, as an ideological notion, has always had a precise strategic function: to guarantee the liberal-democratic hegemony by dismissing the Leftist critique of liberal democracy as the obverse, the twin, of the Rightist Fascist dictatorships.Instead of providing yet another exposition of the history of this notion, Zizek's book addresses totalitarianism in a Wittgensteinian way, as a cobweb of family resemblances. He concludes that the devil lies not so much in the detail of what constitutes totalitarianism but in what enables the very designation totalitarian: the liberal-democratic consensus itself. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars interesting
this is wonderful.i read it in one week.persuade readers to go on and on.

1-0 out of 5 stars Incomprehensible
I found this in the philosphy section of a local store and was intrigued by the timely theme and title. Nothing else proved commendable about this book. This is the sort of book that gives philosphy a bad name. A dense fog of jagron so abstract that it almost seems like a parody. I must admit I could not finish this book. I was barely able to penetrate the first two chapters. Several honest attempts to scan the rest of the book read like pure gibberish.

5-0 out of 5 stars An intensely searching evaluation and analysis
Did Somebody Say Totalitarianism?: Five Interventions in the (Mis)use of a Notion is an intensely searching evaluation and analysis of precisely what totalitarianism is, and how the term has been misused -- particularly in twentieth century political science and philosophical discussions. Individual chapter sections address diverse, unusual, and controversial topics such as "The radical ambiguity of Stalinism"; "A plea for material creationism"; and "The Pope versus the Dalai Lama". Deviously written by Slavoj Zizek (Senior Researcher, Institute for Social Studies, Ljublijana) to unweave conundrums about the cross-purpose classification of totalitarian power and governance, Did Somebody Say Totalitarianism? is a complex, thought-provoking philosophical accounting and a highly recommended addition to academic Political Science and Philosophy Studies departmental reference collections and reading lists. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Spanish version of Simply Delicioso
I'm an Ingrid fan. She is charming and fun to watch on TV.This book - in Spanish - is probably a lot like her English version "Simply Delicioso" but I got it hoping it would have more recipes with South American and Caribbean flair than the "Simply" version. I can't say that it does, but the recipes are easy to follow and the ingredients should be available in most supermarkets. I like her latina "twist" on otherwise ordinary recipes. For example, eggs benedict with a chipotle kick to the hollandaise sauce, a tomato and mango bruschetta, a papaya and feta cheese salad, her version of croque monsieur [croque senor cubano], and many "Ingrid" recipe versions for fish, shellfish, chicken, pork, lamb, and more.Excellent color photos in the front of the book illustrate different ingredients, there's a glossary in Spanish and English, and there are descriptions of different types of peppers - key ingredients in many recipes.

2-0 out of 5 stars I expect more...
because in tv show saids that every recipe have a photo and if you saw that is more simple to made that dish, but NO is not true

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book
If you are learning Spanish, or already know the language, you certainly will enjoy this reading... not just for the exquisite story involved, but to the way Alejandro Dumas (R.I.P.) managed to describe in order to make the readers go away into their imagination.
