1-0 out of 5 stars Wasted my time on this book
I'been doing software architecture for over 9 years now. Started enterprise architecture work several years ago and wanted to learn more about the Zachman Framework. I'm sorry to say all of this since I do feel authors have put a lot of work into this, but this book did not have any more details than a picture of the Framework itself. If you want to read hundreds of pages about Egyptian pyramids, Boing 777 construction, Napoleon's failure in Russia, and all kids of things that have nothing to do with architecture - you may like this book. To me this book had no value. I agree with other reviewers (see "I want my weekend back", etc.). Not even sure if this 715 pages book has enough content for a journal article...

2-0 out of 5 stars Verbose introduction to subject but lacks depth
I have been a business systems analyst for many years and used some elements of the Zachman framework succesfully in fairly cutting edge projects. I was hoping to gain a deeper perspective across the whole framework (all 36 cells) to round out my understanding and to provide additional techniques and methods I could use.
Unfortunately the book wholly failed to meet this expectation. I think it is worth 2 stars for introducing people to the overall concepts of the Zachman Framework, but don't expect any useful methods that can be applied in practice.

The Zachman Framework IS the defintive approach to enterprise systems architecture, but unfortunately there is still scant practical resources available for practicioners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Innovative and Helpful
Assigned as reading in an MIS class, this book is an interesting read and helps define enterprise architecture and describes how EA contributes to corporate value. This book illustrates how to develop a broader perspective of architecture potential and also gives plenty of examples. Chapter 4 includes a number of practical examples of how to work with people who affect decisions on EA implementation. Enterprise architecture is rarely discussed in university management programs and yet there are many opportunities available to those capable of aligning technology and business requirements. Chapter 7 gives a detailed explanation of the Zachman Framework and includes definitions pertinent to a greater understanding of enterprise architecture. The book explains that all the cells of the framework do not have to be completed to make a difference for your organization, and shows how to begin an EA effort one step at a time. The articles on the cd included in the back of the book supplement the comprehensive topics covered in the book itself. I strongly recommend getting this book along with John Zachman's eBook if you want to increase your own personal influence and effectiveness at helping others in your organization understand EA concepts and begin to implement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book; approach Zachman Framework w/caution
This is more of a "What" than a "How" book, and it does clearly [if somewhat verbosely] describe the Zachman Framework. It also provides implementation advice (the "How"), but that information is not as clearly laid out as it is in "Enterprise Architecture Planning" (ISBN 0471599859).

I like this book because it is business-focused, and painstakingly describes the Zachman Framework and how it clearly provides a multidimensional view of business-technology alignment. It also reflects the latest thinking with respect to the framework, including Zachman DNA (Depth iNtegrating Architecture), which is missing from "Enterprise Architecture Planning" I cited above. It also contains some unique perspectives that I haven't found in other books, such as how to use the framework outside of IT (Appendix C), and how to map careers to the framework (Appendix D).

What is missing from this book, and others like it, is a disclosure of the dark side of the framework if an organization fully commits to it.One such problem is once you've mapped your enterprise architecture to the Zachman Framework's matrix, a change in any cell will cause a ripple effect throughout the matrix. As time goes on this effect becomes a barrier to changes or requires high maintenance to keep the architecture in synch with the business and technology components. This does not diminish the value of the Zachman Framework as a way to view the enterprise, but should forewarn you that implementing it as a principle methodology is a step that should be carefully considered before committing.

That said, this book is one I would highly recommend to anyone who is considering the Zachman Framework, or who is seeking an approach to clearly viewing an enterprise from multiple dimensions in order to cut through complexity and see the big picture.I also recommend that you visit the Zachman Institute (see ASIN B00016NEXI) to see the latest work and additional information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read it!!
You will learn how to create value for your organization by systematically recording assets, processes, connectivity, people, timing, and motivation, through a simple framework. What's more, you will create a model that can grow and change as fast as the market evolves. Face it, we know we've got to start somewhere no matter what that first model is.

This book gives you solid information to convince the right people to make that investment. My company started when we closed one plant and had to restructure with fewer employees. All of a sudden we were faced with the reality that alot of information went out the door with the people who got laid off.

One of our employees handed me an article by John Zachman called "Conceptual, Logical, Physical",and also recommended this book that he had used in an introductory management information course. This book will make you look at your tasks and your people differently. We're reworking some of our systems now, but this time, we're building the models as we go along--one step at a time. This book will help you see how to map any attribute or problem to the Zachman Framework, and you can use whatever methodology to do it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My baby's favorite book
Seriously, this was my baby's favorite book when she first started getting into reading board books. This and others in the series. It's simple, with bold colors and shapes.Perfect reading for an infant.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but confusing pictures
My 16-month old daughter loves this book, and it has been her favorite for some time.My husband and I both speak Spanish, so we are always looking for good bilingual books for her.I like this one, but the pictures can be confusing. Each page has a shape by itself and then a picture of something using that shape. For example, circle and balloon. My main problem is with the triangle. The picture is supposed to be a butterfly and the word on that page is "wing" and "ala."You really can't tell that it's a butterfly. My daughter is confused, so now she says "ala" everytime she sees a triangle, not realizing that she's saying "wing."Also, the crescent shape and the moon picture look exactly the same, so it's hard to explain to her why one is called a crescent and the other is called a moon. The author could have made the moon yellow instead of blue, especially since the moon really isn't blue.Otherwise, I like the simplicity of this book.It really holds the attention of younger children who don't want a lot of words on each page.

2-0 out of 5 stars Error-filled again
Yet again Ms. Emberley has created a book out of a dictionary, and again, it has errors. For example, she calls a square a "cuadro," which is plain wrong. A "cuadro" is a painting whereas a "cuadrado" is a square.

These books are certainly pretty to look at and are geared to entertain children, but their poor, error-filled content make them a poor choice to actually teach Spanish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple but good
This book is very simple, but right now my 12 month old son picks it every day without fail. He even laughs at "square", I am not sure why. I got it as a gift from a friend who had to go buy one for her son because he always wanted it from the library. Neither of us are Spanish speakers - that might be a nice feature, but the book works fine in English.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book succeeds where some others fail
I appreciate this book as well as the "My Colors" book by the same author because they take the time to seperate shapes and colors. In some series, the two are combined and I feel that they should be taught seperately. ... Read more

... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent I/T Architecture Book
This is a truly wonderful book. The author distilled his nearly 30 years of I/T experience into this book. It is also a practical book and architecture management personal will find valuable information from the book. For example, chapter 2 discussed Principle-Based Architecture and presented various architecture principles; further more, the author presented a practical Architecture Governance Model that consists of some specialized groups such as Architecture Steering Committee and Architecture Review Board etc. to ensure these principles are followed across the enterprise.

Technical person will also find this is an excellent book to read. For most developers and architects, they may know technical aspect very well within their working domain, however, outside their domain they may not know as well or do not know. This book covers different architecture domains such as Application architecture, Information architecture, Network architecture, Platform Architecture etc. After reading this book, you will have a very good over all understanding of I/T Architecture. I highly recommend this book for leader of I/T architecture department as well as technical architects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for CIO's, I/T Professionals and I/T Architects

Product Description

2-0 out of 5 stars Decepcionado

4-0 out of 5 stars Bellas palabras de un padre/ Beautiful words from a father

4-0 out of 5 stars Muy Emotivo

... Read more

Product Description
The goal of this study is to explain the psychological development of the African petite bourgeoisie into the indigenous collaborative agent for the eventual establishment of neocolonialism in South Africa. This work explains how a small group of mis-educated Black South Africans were deliberately alienated from the Black masses, taught to identify with and aspire to imitate their White oppressors, and eventually placed in positions of national government in order to assist their oppressors in continuing and intensifying the contemporary exploitation of their brethren. It focuses on how the deliberate mis-education of this group fostered an overwhelming identification with European/capitalist ideas and directed the actions of the mis-educated towards compliance with those ideas—even when they compromised the authenticity of the national liberation struggle as led by this same group. The historical ideological stances and politico-economic activities of the leadership element of the ANC are heavily evaluated in an attempt to provide evidence for this theory of mis-education for neocolonialism.

Although this work focuses on South Africa, the phenomenon explained throughout it can be applied globally and therefore should be read by anyone genuinely interested in the liberation of Black people.

If you believe that Black people are already liberated because there are so many examples of wealthy Black individuals or Black people are relatively more materially privileged now than prior to the civil rights movement, the African national liberation struggle, or the end of apartheid, then this book will initially liberate you…

“With ‘mis-educated Negroes’ in control of themselves, however, it is doubtful that the system would be very different from what it is or that it would rapidly undergo change. The Negroes thus placed in charge would be the products of the same system and would show no more conception of the task at hand than do the whites who have educated them and shaped their minds as they would have them function.Negro [politicians] of today may have more sympathy and interest in the race than the whites now exploiting [the] Negro…but the former have no more vision than their competitors.Taught from books of the same bias, trained by Caucasians of the same prejudices or by Negroes of enslaved minds, one generation of Negro [politicians] after another have served for no higher purpose than to do what they are told to do.”

Product Description
From the inventor of fractal geometry, a revolutionary new theory that overturns our understanding of how markets work.

Benoit B. Mandelbrot, one of the century's most influential mathematicians, is world-famous for making mathematical sense of a fact everybody knows but that geometers from Euclid on down had never assimilated: Clouds are not round, mountains are not cones, coastlines are not smooth. To these classic lines we can now add another example: Markets are not the safe bet your broker may claim. In his first book for a general audience, Mandelbrot, with co-author Richard L. Hudson, shows how the dominant way of thinking about the behavior of markets--a set of mathematical assumptions a century old and still learned by every MBA and financier in the world--simply does not work.

As he did for the physical world in his classic The Fractal Geometry of Nature, Mandelbrot here uses fractal geometry to propose a new, more accurate way of describing market behavior. The complex gyrations of IBM's stock price and the dollar-euro exchange rate can now be reduced to straightforward formulae that yield a far better model of how risky they are. With his fractal tools, Mandelbrot has gotten to the bottom of how financial markets really work, and in doing so, he describes the volatile, dangerous (and strangely beautiful) properties that financial experts have never before accounted for. The result is no less than the foundation for a new science of finance. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An opportunity for continued thinking
Benoit Mandelbrot's The (Mis) Behavior of Markets is a splendid read and very informative. As many reviewers have noted, Mandelbrot invented fractal geometry. He has also been on the cutting edge (some would say fringe, but he's thinking and questioning) in multiple disciplines, as his curiosity seem to know no bounds. Mandelbrot does a good job of describing the inadequacies of the efficient market hypothesis and CAPM and other sacrosanct theories in finance, and he offers for our consideration an alternative view. His view is based on his assertion of reality; namely that the world of finance is turbulent (as indeed, the world is turbulent), and linear tools relying on reliability and rational man will never tell the full story.

Mandelbrot, to his credit, warns the reader early on that his is not an investment guide. He simply offers his ideas, and admits that some don't offer as much insight currently as he wishes. He is, however, optimistic that his philosophies and his alternative (edge-type) thinking will prevail in some form.

Truly wish I read this before b-school, as he explains why I scratched my head through a good portion because the theories didn't look "right." As a couple of other reviewers have noted, the first part of the book is best, and sort of stumbles to find itself in the second half. All that said, this is a valuable contribution and highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars An unconventional view of financial markets
Benoit Mandelbrot presents a very sophisticated approach to describing the statistics of financial markets. The assumption of gaussian statistics is often the starting point for modeling many phenomena.Sophisticated modelers soon realize that gaussian statistics are inadequate in many cases; and so, it is not surprising that gaussian statistics fail in modeling financial markets.I can only hope that the organizations that analyze risk for retirement investments and the plans that these organizations recommend do not use gaussian statistics in predicting possible retirement financial scenarios.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
A must-read if you enjoyed Taleb's Black Swan and want more information on the ideas behind Taleb's postulations.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Awesomeness of Fractals
(Note: first, I recommend that readers read Gaetan Lion's excellent review of this book.My review addresses narrower, somewhat technical aspects of the book.I apologize in advance for its great length.)

Second, some backstory to this book.Institutional investors such as insurance companies or brokerages usually do not focus on picking stocks per se; rather, they operate like an actuary, selecting the odds of particular outcomes and insuring against the bad outcomes in the cheapest way. For a large number of investors, the returns come from "cheaply-held risk," meaning that risky (but potentially higher-performing) assets are insured against massive losses in the least expensive way prudent.Naturally, a cheap way to hold risky assets is to not insure against risk, but of course this is extremely dangerous.

For a smaller number of investors, the returns come from providing the insurance: writing put options, exotic swaps, and so on. Limited liability partnerships that did this sort of thing used to be known as "hedge funds," since they were businesses that sold hedges against risk to other investors. More recently, portfolio insurance (in the forms of exotic derivatives) has become a major source of income for the entire FIRE sector. Even if one nets out the immense losses of 2008, it's been a very lucrative business worldwide.More about that in a minute.

As with other forms of insurance, the paramount consideration is pricing risk, which depends on the size and frequency of market fluctuations. In theory, these fluctuations not only ought to be random, but the frequency of each variation (ranked by size and direction) ought to map out a Normal (Gaussian) curve, as other random phenomena do.Instead, it maps out other curves.Since there MANY other curves that could potentially do the job--and softwares for applying them, too--this is not really a serious hurdle. But the problem doesn't really end there.

If anomalies like the 6 May 2010 1000-pt. drop in the Dow were randomly distributed THROUGH TIME, then adapting risk evaluation methods like the Black-Scholes formula (used to compute the value of derivatives) would be easy. Once we've replaced a Normal distribution with something that fits the data, we would still wrongly expect 6-May-2010 shocks to occur very far apart. But while volatility overall is not at unprecedented levels, individual anomalies are larger and more frequent than ever; and even if we focus on much more commonplace events, we find that they have very un-even distribution through time. In fact, such shifts come in consecutive (or almost-consecutive) bursts; this is known as "autocorrelation," and it makes a hash of any effort to actually price risk.

Prudence says that capital managers should keep value at risk below 20% of the value of the portfolio, which should be easy with a reasonable amount of hedging. But if one acknowledges the possibility both of very large numbers of anomalies, AND their autocorrelation (incidence close together in time), then hedging adequately becomes prohibitively expensive, eliminating gains from trading.

Mandelbrot argues that the patterns of price changes are fractal in nature; the (log) price history for the Dow, for example, looks rather the same if you show a 330-day chart or a 330-minute chart.Revealingly, he demonstrates how to use fractals to simulate a fictional trading chart that mimics the statistical behavior of the real stock. However, after explaining this backstory (and including the marginally relevant story of H.E. Hurst's study of the Nile), the authors have little to add. This is not the fault of fractals per se; indeed, several studies of multifractal models of asset returns (MMAR) compared to GARCH(1,1) suggest that fractals are indeed a stronger tool for capturing the true risk of asset returns.*

Part of the problem may be the difficulty of explaining the mathematics/nature nexus clearly. Mandelbrot is not merely a brilliant mathematician, he's a gifted writer; his 1997 paper introducing MMAR is remarkably easy to read, considering its historical significance. But for even broader diffusion, a prominent financial editor co-wrote the book, and probably decided the upper limit on how much could be explained to non-statisticians.

However, a more serious issue is the lack of rationale for the revised theory. What I mean by this is, we can always tweak the mathematical model to produce results that approximate reality very closely. As explained above, even a random (simulated) process is valuable to a trader, if the random process captures the statistical features of the real process--in this case, a time series of asset prices. But if the mathematical model is nothing more than yet another shrink-to-fit snapshot of history, it's nothing more than data mining writ large. It's as if I generated a Fourier series that precisely matched the movement of the Dow over many years; without an underlying narrative, it's nothing but an ingenious way to draw another chart of PAST price movements. The pattern and timing of anomalies could continue to change over time in a wholly unpredictable way, in the absence of an overriding explanatory narrative.

* GARCH(1,1): generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity. The (1, 1) refers to the number of lags of the conditional variance and the number of lags of the squared innovations. An example of such a study would be Thomas Lux, "Multi-Fractal Processes as Models for Financial Returns" (1999).

Product Description

Mis/takes departs from the bulk of screen discourse by applying Jungian and Post-Jungian ideas on unconscious processes to popular film and television. This perspective offers a rich insight into the way that various myths infiltrate popular culture.

By examining the function of psychological motifs and symbols in cinema and television, Terrie Waddell opens up another way of thinking about how identity can be constructed and disrupted. Mulholland Drive, Memento, The Others, The X-Files, Twin Peaks, The Sopranos, Spider, Intimacy and Absolutely Fabulous all lend themselves to this approach.

The close analysis of these films/programs are guided by a number of core archetypes from trickster and Self to incest and the grotesque. The book’s four parts reflect these dominant patterns:

  • Jung, trickster and the screen
  • Mistaken identities, self-deception and the undead
  • Redeemers, bad dads and matricide
  • Excesses of the sad and the sassy

Mis/takes gives readers a chance to engage with screen material in an original and subversive way. This study will be of great interest to Jungian analysts and students of film, cultural studies, media, gender studies and analytical psychology.

Product Description
In this volume, the authors identify three "intuitive rules" and demonstrate how these rules can be used to interpret important misconceptions many students have about science and maths. By showing how learners react in similar ways to scientifically unrelated situations, the authors make a strong case for a theoretical framework that can explain these inconsistencies and predict students' responses to scientific and mathematical tasks. Provided are useful teaching strategies, grounded in this framework, that may be used to strengthen students' abilities to understand scientific and mathematics content. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This whole series is plagued with errors
This whole series is useless. Each of the books has words that are translated incorrectly, and/or are plain poor choices (such as selecting items that have different regional names in different Spanish-speaking countries).

For example, in this book, "Salamander" is translated as "Lagartija". Really? The Spanish word for Salamander is "Salamandra" ("lagartija" means lizard - which is a reptile - while salamanders are amphibians - totally different groups of animals).

In addition, often there is no gender correspondence between the translation and the selected object. For example, the number "one" is translated as "uno" (which is correct). But then, she chooses a word that is feminine ("La Lagartija", making it "UNA lagartija"). Given that there are thousands and thousands of words in Spanish, why not choose one where both instances of the translation match? Especially since there is no explanation on how nouns in Spanish are associated with a gender (unlike English, where most words are gender neutral).

In the back cover of all this collection, the word "collect" is translated as "recolecta", which would be equivalent to "gather". The correct word would be "colecciona".

In a book that has about 10 words total, and designed to teach a foreign language, these errors are unforgivable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good beginnings
We urchased this as a book for our church library in the preschool. Children love the bright, simple colors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful images
This one is by far the best out of this series. I don't know who enjoys these books the most, my 10-month old son or my husband who is learning Spanish. The beautiful graphics in all the books in this series keep them both engaged. After he outgrows these books, we are looking forward to utilizing them as a resource for art projects. This particular book contains no errors per se, but keep in mind that the Spanish language is very rich, and there are different words (used in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America) that mean the same thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Educational & Fun for Baby & Parents!
MY NUMBERS/MIS NUMEROS is a simple, fun book. There are two pages for the numbers one through ten. The first page shows the number, with the name of the number in English and Spanish. On the facing page is a picture, with as many instances of that object as go with the number.

The illustrations in MY NUMBERS/MIS NUMEROS are spectacular. They look as if they were made using cutouts of construction paper, and combine overall simplicity with some fascinating detail. For example, for the number one the illustration is of a salamander with little round ends to his toes. My son puts his finger out and traces over the shapes with fascination. Each of the ten illustrations is excellent.

My 10-month old son loves MY NUMBERS/MIS NUMEROS. It is one that he will pull out of the book basket and look at at on his own. A good friend of mine, an artists and former teacher, loves it. Her 2 year old son also enjoyed reading this book, enough that we read it over and over when I recently babysat him. I am also enjoying MY NUMBERS/MIS NUMEROS as a way to brush up on a bit of my Spanish.

The vocabulary: 1 salamander, 2 leaves, 3 strawberries, 4 hearts, 5 carrots, 6 snakes, 7 stars, 8 bumblebees, 9 ladybugs, and 10 butterflies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great Spanish Board book
Whether you're introducing Spanish to your child, or wanting a nice review, this book is GREAT because of the bright, simple pictures, its sturdiness, and its perfect size for younger children through upper elementary.

I pull out this book when I need another way to drill numbers in my Spanish classes. It goes great with the numbers lesson in the workbook Flip Flop Spanish! ... Read more
