4-0 out of 5 stars Hallelujah! Somebody got it right!
I am so happy that I purchased a copy of this book. In pictorial layout, Hall & Wheeler helped me to understand a very confusing (to me) software package. I'm new at web site design, so this book was a great aid in getting me off the ground. Not perfect, but head and shoulders above anything else I have. Thanks, H&W. Ray Mathews, Raleigh, NC

3-0 out of 5 stars not bad to use as a reference
This book gets you quickly setup with Fusion's most common uses. However, the book rushes through each topic so fast, the the reader is many times left wondering what happened. it's good to learn the basics (even those you learn them in small quantities). It could have been better made, with more example on how and were you would use each technique described. ... Read more

Product Description

At the beginning of the 1950s, the interior of West and Central Africa was still known to most of the outside world as the "White Man's Grave," and consisted of vast expanses of mysterious and threatening primeval forest. When Donald MacIntosh, 23-year-old Gaelic-speaking Scottish forester, was offered a position in Nigeria in 1954, it was a dream come true and he found himself posted to the hot, cloying humidity of those fabled lands. During the next 30 years he was to wander through some of the most remote areas of West Africa where he operated as a forest botanist. There he listened to the tales of ancient Africa from the lips of hunters, fishermen, chiefs, and witch doctors from a vast diversity of tribes in myriad encampments.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fanciful, Delightfully Written Tale of Africa
MacIntosh has emerged from the continent of Africa with a chest full of treasures and has penned them into a brilliant book.He begins the stories with what led him to Africa...the forests.Through the telling of information about trees and lumber, MacIntosh runs through some entertaining stories about his time in Africa. These stories run the gamut of events that include harrowing escapes and run ins with wild animals and extraordinary encounters with natives whom he befriends. In some of the stories, he is the main character and in others he has heard it secondhand. Both ways are captivating.

On the whole, the book is warm and delightful with many humorous touches.MacIntosh lifts the veil of the mysterious jungles of Africa for readers.

I look forward to learning of more of MacIntosh's travels in the white man's grave.

The narrator of the audio version is a first rate actor and reads the book splendidly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Concepts Explained Beautifully
This book provides the best introduction to the concepts behind Obj-Oriented Programming I've ever seen. It makes every other attempt to reach beginners that I've read (and there were several) seem ham-handed bycomparison. After reading it, I didn't feel like I was a master, but I didfeel that my basics were on totally solid ground, and I had ampleconfidence to go to advanced-level books.

I agree with some critics thata chapter on how to use MRJ would have been a good idea. Since I hadCodeWarrior Pro already, I can't comment on the software that comes withthe book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Intermediate level
If you have no previous knowledge of any of prog_lang, start with Dori Smith book, then go to free Sun's tutorial. If you are familiar with OOP, this book will be nice transition to more advanced topics. Great book ifyou fit profile above. Mind you, to play around with sample code, get JDK.3 stars, because the book should make clear that some of the later chaptersare out of the reach of average beginner to programming.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good from afar, but far from Good.
The authors do a good job explaining the easy conceptual stuff and simple code in the early chapters and, as a total programming neophyte, I was very impressed--at first. But when they get to more complex code examples in themiddle chapters--forget it. IMO, they throw too many concepts at you, tooquickly, and with poorly articulated definitions and garbled explanations, and you're left shaking your head, slack jawed with confusion.I don'tclaim to be an Einstein, but I've got a very strong conceptual and logicalintelligence, years of Mac experience, plus energy and dedication to thetask of learning--and I can't get through this damn book. The otherfrustration is the CD that came with the book. It was burned in 1996. WhenI loaded it on my Mac itput files in my system folder which conflictedwith my other start-up items. I called the CD's manufacturer, Metrowerks, they politely washed their hands of it. Said it was written for system 7and was, in 1999, now"out of date" and they bore no legalresponsibility for it. In fact, the fine print in the back of the book saysas much. OK, you got met. So I called the publisher, they agreed to"send me a replacement" book. Now I have 2 copies of thisfrustrating book, both with out of date software. So had to go out and getMetrowerks updated software for about $80 (which works fine), so I coulduse my book. Shame on you Addison Wesley, for leaving this book out on themarket with apparently out of date software, and for doing such a poorquality editing job.

1-0 out of 5 stars You can learn java on a Mac easier with another book...
Learn Java on the Macintosh just doesn't have the meat one needs to become a well-versed Java master.Including CodeWarrior actually retards learning.Restricting the user to a particular IDE, and not allowinghim/her to take advantage of Apple's frequently updated MRJ SDK (a freetoolset from Apple), is a painful blow.

If that were the only flaw, Mr.Boone could be forgiven, but it's not.Though the examples that arepresented are easily readable and simple to perform, not enough effort hasbeen spent by Mr. Boone to make sure his reader can expand upon thesesimple skills at the book's completion.

After reading the several hundredpages, the reader has done no more than been led by the hand through themost simplistic tasks (and has been tied to CodeWarrior if s/he wants toget them done).

To really get down anddirty with Java, take a look at Exploring Java By Patrick Niemeyer &Joshua Peck ISBN 1-56592-184-271-9.By the second chapter you've alreadybeen exposed to Java class hierarchies and paint methods (two topics Boonebarely mentions).

It's a shame though.Mark's book on C is a wonderfulvolume. But Boone took too long to get going (I have an electronic copyand started printing out what I was going to actually read at page 187) andfinally comes up short.Java is a field where Windows isn't the name ofthe game and cross-platform functionality is.Java's the perfect langaugefor the Mac; the book just ain't!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good authors, not a good reference book
If you're looking to begin your computing experience with computerprogramming, this is a very good foundational book. Boone and Markhand-hold you through the process, and Java seems very simple under theirtutoring. However, as I've begun to program and use this as a referencebook, I have occasion to go back to it and try to find coding I'd readabout, Finding lost coding is almost impossible. It seems as though verylittle time was spent on the index and glossaries. In other books likeLaura Lemay's HTML book, there was a lot of time that was spent recappingthe chapter and listing all the code in a concise, timely manner. There isnothing like that in this book. It wasn't bad enough for 3 stars, but 4stars seems a little much, too. ... Read more

Product Description
Provides an easy, visual approach to teaching Dreamweaver, using pictures to guide students through the software and show what to do in a step-by-step manner.Softcover.Amazon.com Review
Whether you're a beginner who needs a quick introduction to Dreamweaver or an intermediate user who needs help with one of the program's newer or more complex features, this handy guide is perfect. Instead of a tutorial where you work through a specific project, the lesson in this book walks you through your documents while you work on them.

If you've used QuickStart guides before, you know how convenient they are as references. Succinct text eliminates having to wade through discourses on theory or history, and a thorough index directs you to answers quickly. Plus, with their small footprint, these guides earn their place on a crowded desk. The QuickStart series is consistent in style (with numbered steps in one column, screen shots in the other) and quality.

Even within this established format, author J. Tarin Towers's light and friendly style shows through--making for interesting reading. The author has also included numerous sidebars on how things work (for example, using measuring units such as pixels, picas, or ems) and timesaving features (for example, the Hints menu in the Quick Tags editor). Alternate methods for executing tasks and other handy information can be found in the many tips that follow each section.

Macintosh users in particular should read the introduction, which explains the few, but crucial, differences in the Windows version of Dreamweaver. This affects the way screen shots look throughout the book.

This edition has four new chapters that cover changes in Dreamweaver 3. Since one of the best features of Dreamweaver is the ease with which you can view and edit source code, the book devotes a chapter to HTML and the application's tools for working with it (for example, the new Clean Up Word HTML command). With more than 500 pages, this is one of the longer QuickStart guides and well worth a spot on a Webmaster's desk. --Angelynn Grant

Topics covered: Step-by-step instructions for using Dreamweaver 3 (including an introduction to the working environment, palettes, and menus); creating a Web site and site management; working with text, images, links, tables, frames, CSS, DHTML, behaviors, timeline animation, and plug-ins; customizing and automating tasks; working with HTML; and the new features of version 3. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Dreamweaver makes coding easy
I work with coding for the web at work using HomeSite which is certainly a big step up from WordPad, but Dreamweaver has made my job fun and easy.I love the Visual Quickstart books because they allow me to pick and choose what I want to do in the book, and learn what I need when I need it.Each subject is a one or two page standalone. In the typical computer book, the user is forced to read through a complete chapter to learn how to do something.Granted, this gives the reader a more thorough background on the how's and why's, but I like the quickness of the Visual Quickstart Guides.I can look up one function at a time, see and read it quickly, and actually make it happen almost just as quickly. If I need more, I can go to a bigger reference book. But if quick, professional and basic competence are my criteria, then nothing beats the Visual Quickstart Guides. I enjoy being able to review the chapters and/or subjects in the order I need them.I find that I sometimes still hit that 'F10' key and make manual changes to my source coding to make things happen as I want, but I could avoid that if I chose; manual changes, after all, do keep my coding skills honed so I don't get totally lazy.Dreamweaver versus manual coding is like comparing Windows to DOS, or an automatic transmission vehicle to a standard transmission:Sure there are always people who are purists that want to feel the basics as they happen, but Windows, automatic transmissions and Dreamweaver are luxuries that have become a part of our daily life and are here to stay.Once you've experienced the luxury, there is no desire to go back to the old, labor intensive way.You will, however, want Macromedia to build even more functionality into Dreamweaver to keep up with the newest web technology as it changes. This is a wonderful primary reference book for Dreamweaver users...

2-0 out of 5 stars Standard Peachpit ease of use, but you don't need this book
You can learn this much Dreamweaver from the manual and playing aroud with it for a while. If you need a simple reference manual, go ahead and get this. But if you want to learn Dreamweaver as a regular user, invest in a better book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Does a satisfactory-but not outstanding-job
This book does what you expect--teaches Dreamweaver without a having to slog through thick, dense manual, but is lacking in some areas. The instructions aren't always clear, and there are typos/mistakes. It helps a lot if you already know HTML and other desktop publishing/layout programs already. If I had to pick again, I'd probably look for something else first, but buy this one if I couldn't find another guide which is supposed to teach you fast.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disorganized
A more useless book I have never encountered. In order to perform the simplest task such as changing menu appearance the author takes you from chapter to another, instead of having the information organized within the chapter.I would recommend Dreamweaver 4:Essential Skills and Drills by Iconlogic instead.

2-0 out of 5 stars Quickstart My Heart!!
This is a decent referance book but by no means should be used as a training guide. In reality this book is no more than an extended manual. They claim that the easiest way to learn is by looking at their photos but the truth is that there is no better training than actually getting on the computer and doing. For beginners I would say skip this book and head directly to Hands On Training with Dreamweaver 3, possibly one of the best learning tools for Dreamweaver 3 around. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Accelerated learning caused me to crash.
This book lost me near day 13. At that point the author seemed to be trying to put 10 pounds of java info into a 5 pound bag, so to speak, but without explaining many important concepts. As the days progressed I felt less and less comfortable with this book. I realized that many attempts at "accelerated learning" fall flat and are worthless.

I went to the university bookstore here and purchased a java textbook that is used in an introductory (but challenging) computer science course. So far, it seems to be "just what the doctor ordered" however it is not geared to Mac. The name of it is "Introduction to Programming with Java A Problem Solving Approach". There is a fine introduction that starts from ground zero and will benefit all who are new to programming. There are review questions and exercises at the end of each chapter, and also project assignments. A web site takes you to answers and supplemental information about the book. The authors are John and Raymond Dean. The first chapter is great and provides a history of Java and how to download a free Sun compiler onto your desktop.

1-0 out of 5 stars If I could give it NO stars, I would
I got this book hoping for a good introduction to Java; I got a garbage-y book and a useless CD-ROM.First of all, the version of the software on the CD does NOT work.I wasted hours trying to relate it to the softwaredescribed in the book; and it's not even the same thing!!!!If you want usto buy a full version of a compiler, FINE...but please stick to what's onthe CD, otherwise the whole damn thing is useless.I went out and got J++6.0 and the J++ Programmer's Guide (both from Microsoft) instead, and it isten million times better.Don't waste your money on this book; in thiscase, go with Microsoft.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good book but Roaster is unusable without purchasing it too
This would be a 5 star book had the version of Roaster™ provided been afull or at least usable version!

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad, bad, bad!
Worthless, at least to a beginner. The code in the samples and on the disk don't match up, the code contradicts instructions given in the text, unexplained logical leaps are plentiful, and the copy editing is shameful considering these people are accepting money for this thing. Bad, bad, bad! Run, don't walk, as far away from this book as you can!

1-0 out of 5 stars waste of a tree
Interesting attempt but the relation of the text to the included software is abysmal.Obviously another case where the writers and programers were not in touch with reality.Overall, worthless for a relative beginner. The simple things were not explained in the least, not even for someone conversant with C. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Use
This book is very helpful and easy to follow. It's a very nice book for anyone trying to figure out Fireworks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great one!!
Fireworks made easy!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Concept to Get Started Fast
Macromedia is clearly devoted to the web page production business. Fireworks is their graphics package that is ideally suited for producing the kinds of images you want on web sites. It is also smoothly integrated into the rest of their packages such as Dreamweaver, which is hands down the preferred web authoring package available at the professional level.

If you're thinking about Fireworks but aren't sure, you can go to the Macromedia site and down load a free trial of the package to see if you like it. As for the literature that comes with it, you will find that this book is a much better option.

The Visual Quickstart Guides us an interesting format where each page has one column of text and another of screen images. The idea is to show and explain at the same time. This is a very easy and quick way to get up and running on a software package. The concept is good, and Sandee Cohen does a great job here.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid iWeb - it should be called iLie
Here's the skinny on the iLife software: It works if you give all your money to Apple and their associate companies. If you don't, the software appears to be specifically engineered to *not function properly* using third-party services.

I have a client who purchased iWeb and created a simple one-page web site.He was using my company for hosting. He was unable to publish his pages to the server so he brought his macbook over to the offices and we analyzed the iWeb software and the ftp session it was creating to see what the problem was.

First off, the latest version of iWeb (3.0) has bugs in it.In some cases it will rename a file reference within a web page, but it will be different from the file reference on disk.I verified this.If you name your page something like "index.html" which is common for web pages, iWeb will call it "index.html.html" in one place and "index.html" in another and make the site break.Second, iWeb creates a web page layout that is unnecessarily complicated and problematic.Rather than push your web site to the server in a straightforward manner, it moves the entire web site into a subdirectory and then creates an empty landing page with a meta refresh to your actual site. This can result in your entire web site not being indexed by some search engines. It's ridiculous and stupid.

Third and most important, iWeb does not appear to work properly with third-party hosting. We watched as I published a ONE PAGE web site with three images and some text and it repeatedly failed. And when it failed, all iweb said was, "There was an error communicating with the ftp site."

I watched the ftp logs on my server and there were NO ERRORS.iWeb started putting files to the server and then, for no reason whatsoever, just stopped and reported an ambiguous error message.

I called up a friend of mine who is a major developer partner with Adobe and he laughed and said, "iWeb basically only works with Apple's web hosting."Nowhere is this mentioned.

If you think about it, it's a brilliant, yet unethical scheme. If you have a hosting company you're happy with, you use iWeb, and suddenly things don't work and iWeb says "there's a problem with your hosting company.."You call Apple and they upsell you on their web hosting.Their program appears to INTENTIONALLY MISLEAD CUSTOMERS into thinking there's something wrong with a non-Apple service provider, when in reality, there is no problem. The iWeb software lies.

I have been advising customers to move to more ethical and reliable software such as Freeway.

3-0 out of 5 stars What is the use?
Now there is Life' 09 and according to everyone is much better than Life' 08 and I feel I should have waited. Doesn't it always go like this? You got the goods one year and next you are lacking. The book is helpful, written in a friendly style and even though I detected minor limitations it does give an educated view and grasp of Life' 08 which like I said is not as good al Life' 09. Man, I am getting tired of the consumer in me frantic desire to have almost everything up to date. I realize it can not be done unless the dough is plentiful and the addiction to shopping is way out of control. 3 Stars since the new 09 is probably the one that deserves 4.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not real comprehensive
The book is quite good and easy to read.It would be nice if it were more comprehensive.

1-0 out of 5 stars poor iWeb coverage
I found the coverage of iWeb to be too brief and didn't answer numerous questions I had in this complicated and important feature of iLife. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars It's cool.
I'm happy with the quality of the book, the one thing that bummed me out was they didn't have the work book CD! They shipped the book very fast,
nice to work with. I would buy from them again.

Thanks

4-0 out of 5 stars Aimed at the photographer.
My own conversion from film to digital photography has been a very steep leaning curve. Not all the products I purchased have proved to be useful. Furthermore, I have been disappointed with some of the books aimed at CS3 users and, consequently, purchased this product "after" I had purchased Adobe CS3.

Laid out in a manner which allows the user to build on each lesson as they progress, this is a straight forward learning process which is both thorough and educational. Aimed at the photographer, the book comes with a CD which allows the student to progress at a very reasonable pace. Having worked my own way through the book, there were very few places where the differences between CS2 and CS3 were relevant. I learned a great deal and am now able to improve many of my stock photographs before allowing then to be considered for publication.

Technology moves on so fast that even the manufacturers of my new digital cameras had produced a brand new camera within 12 months of my buying what was then the very latest models. It is the same with Adobe Photoshop and, although CS2 has been replaced (and replaced again) these books are still very good value for money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Intermediate Reading
I came to this book too early in my Photoshop personal development. It's a thick, useful tome and now I'm glad I've got it but it had to reside on a bookshelf for many months before it attained its full value. You will find it handy if you have at least intermediate skills and you're sticking with CS2.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I found the Book Excellent value for mooney, and very informative. This will i beleive.be of enormouse help to me although i have already attended Photoshop courses previously

Product Description
Greek tragedy is currently being performed more frequently than at any time since classical antiquity. This book is the first to address the fundamental question, why has there been so much Greek tragedy in the theatres, opera houses and cinemas of the last three decades? A detailed chronological appendix of production information and lavish illustrations supplement the fourteen essays by an interdisciplinary team of specialists from the worlds of classics, theatre studies, and the professional theatre. They relate the recent appeal of Greek tragedy to social trends, political developments, aesthetic and performative developments, and the intellectual currents of the last three decades, especially multiculturalism, post-colonialism, feminism, post-structuralism, revisions of psychoanalytical models, and secularization. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not Great
The author has (what appears to be) a well-developed tutorial. I didn't use it because it would have been too time-consuming. I was looking for simple explanations for some basic functions: tracking, mixing, editing, inputs, sends and returns. The sometimes flowery writing makes it unnecessarily difficult to understand some basic operations. The services of a competent editor would have improved this book considerably. The author also spends an unnecessary amount of time to explain how to set up the hardware and software. (The owners manuals will get you through that stuff.)
Someone unfamiliar with software recording could benefit from this book. Anyone familiar with this, or similar, recording programs will find this book minimally useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mitch Gallager- Excellent Job!!!
I recently purchased a Digi002 and had read another one of the top rated books out there, but this book is so superior. It takes you from level one all the way through so that you get a complete understanding of LE. Written clearly and concisely, this will be my reference book for a long time. Great book!! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great book foradvanced flash
I love the quickstart series! As a webmaster, they are my first go-to resource. They are laid out in a way that I can find what I need, quickly. They give just what I need to get started.

Flash CS3 Professional Advanced took me to the next level in FLASH.Espeically the audio/video information, which I have more and more customers asking for.

The information on dynamic pages was also extremely helpful.

This is worth every penny!

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended for beginner and intermediate AS 2.0 users.
When actionscript 3.0 (Flash CS3) came onto the scene, it caused great consternation among interactive designers who were used to working directly in the Flash IDE and coding AS 2.0 on the timeline.Almost all the new books/threads on the topic, including Moock's 'Essential 3.0', showed a bias in demonstrating AS 3.0 in the context of OOP and Flex. Granted, that is where the true power/purpose of AS 3.0 lies. BUT, this also created the sentiment in the non-developer camp that AS 3.0 is severely verbose and not as flexible and fun as AS2. This is simply not the case as AS 3.0 was created to embrace BOTH designers and developers.

I think Adobe was so preoccupied with wooing the developer crowd that it failed to reassure existing beginner/intermediate 2.0 users that 3.0 works just as well on the timeline and that you CAN still make a banner ad, personal portfolio site, microsite without building/executing your codes as Classes or authoring them in Flex/Components.

Having said that, if you are hardcore OOP developer and need to build an enterprise level web app using AS3, this book is NOT for you. In fact, you have no business using the Flash IDE or coding on the timeline.

Russell Chun takes nothing for granted and starts by giving a quick overview of the program's tools. Then you'll be taken through a series of exercises that is very easy to follow. By the end of the book, you will have learned enough to build a decent interactive web page. You will also have the foundation to move onto OOP.

I have owned a number ofRussell Chun's books since MX2004 and will vouch for its effectiveness. Its generously illustrated, concise, clearly written examples will help beginners and intermediate 2.0 users EASE into 3.0.

Get this book and you'll see that AS 3.0 can be just as fun.

1-0 out of 5 stars worthless for me
I suppose this book may be fine for anyone wanting to learn a broad overview of AS3 ("Flash" is a misnomoer; Flash is ActionScript). But for anybody like myself trying to build a website with specific components, the book is worthless. This is because the author, instead of showing the steps to create a complete component (dropdown menus that LINK; scrolling thumbnails that LINK), shows you instead how to build shells that do nothing, and says, "we'll discuss the rest in a later chapter."Then doesn't, at least not in a way directly applicable to the previous instructions. Why not just show us how to create something that actually works, all in a single lesson?Forgive me if that's too much to ask.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference!
Constantly refer to this book as a reference while coding. This book provides short, but well explainded "How To" on esssential Actionscript 3 coding topics.I own several Actionscript 3 books, but this is the one I refer to again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you buy just one Flash CS3 book, this is the one to get
The Visual QuickPro Guide Flash CS3 Professional Advanced, the follow-up to the Flash 8 book*, is a great tool for anyone trying to make the transition from ActionScript 2 (Flash 8) to ActionScript 3 (Flash CS3). I am Flash 8 Certified, and as I make the push to re-certify for ActionScript 3, this is the book I am studying. It is more concise and compact than the Flash Bible, yet still contains the information needed to build great Flash apps and to pass the expert exam.It covers all the big differences between AS3 and AS2 in a clear, concise manner. But newbies shouldn't be put off by the title: beginner topics like 'what is a Movie Clip' and how to do timeline animation are also covered. The only complaint is the lack of a companion CD-ROM containing tutorial files. But even without a CD, this is still a fantastic resource for the Flash aficionado, professional or student. (*Anyone buying this book might also consider the Visual QuickPro guide for Flash 8, which is also excellent--and still relevant. The Flash 8 book deals with ActionScript 2, which is widely used for developing mobile / cell phone apps.) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A milestone
I'm a supporter of the Mac since 1988 and I got this book in 1992, while starting my first software project in HyperCard (do you remember that little wonder?). I really think that this publication will make you think twice before any step of your programming and this can only be a good thing!

We can almost say that these guys are the ones that actually invented the concept of Human User Interface Design. We have to remember that the Mac IS this book and that's why Microsoft has always been trying to copy the Apple's user interface.

You will surely enjoy this book's style: easy and at the same time dead serious and even scientific about its topics. Interface planning will become second nature in most thing you'll do. Not just programming, but even your communications in general will be influenced by it.

You can download it from the Apple site now, but I do still prefer to read the real thing. ;-)

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Introduction

Product Description

The University Museum's classical collections are among the largest, most diverse, and most systematically collected of those of any museum in the United States. Of particular importance is the Etruscan material, spanning the entire history of the Etruscan peoples, from the ninth to the second centuries B.C. The strengths of the Roman collection are its glass, coins, sculpture, and the excavated objects from the Italian sites of Colonia Minturnae and the Sanctuary of Diana at Nemi.

The Guide covers religion, daily life, language, commerce and trade, and death and burial among the Etruscans and Romans, and the legacy of the classical world in Western culture. It celebrates the completion of a suite of galleries at the University Museum—Worlds Intertwined: Etruscans, Greeks, and Romans—and is a companion guide to The Ancient Greek World (1995).

5-0 out of 5 stars I was charmed
This book is an incredibly charming read, made even better by the beautiful pictures.I enjoyed it so much that I have given several copies of this book to friends and family. When I grow up (?), I want to be an archaeologist!!

Thank you, Naomi Miller, for giving me many evenings of pleasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars the author signs in
Amazon.com had a mistake in the listing (since corrected) which prompted me to write and take the opportunity to transmit what my friends say about the book (I, of course, would be too prejudiced to write my own review):

One of the people pictured in the book wrote to me: "Thanks a million for your wonderful book. I've just spent a while taking refuge from a grumpy evening by flipping through it, pausing to read about the parts of your life I don't know. How wonderfully generous of you to enshrine us like this, with such precise evocation of time, space, foolishness & purpose."

Another friend wrote:"Your lovely book of drawings and watercolors arrived yeaterday. [We] were immediately entranced by the images and text--such an amusing, informative down-to-earth description life on the dig. The watercolors are really wonderful, but I've always known that.... I had never seen the Shiraz bazaar or Malyan village scenes. Then there are all the pals: ...--they evoke such memories! Is that Dash, the Wonder Dog, on the back cover? Remember, he had a "thing' for you, invading your bedroom with his cargo of fleas! And there he is, wagging his tail at your photograph. Plate 16 is a sweet rendering of my favorite view of Yassihöyük. The Euphrates views are as close as I ever need to get to that old river. Finally, I love all the little sketches scattered throughout--especially the birds and animals. Thanks again for the originals, which I treasure, and thanks for the book. ..."

And another friend wrote: "...Your book is wonderful: your narrative is a delight to read and you know how much I admire your watercolors--each is exquisite w/ great sureness of line, balance of composition pacing & repetition that makes a whole of the multi-paneled ones, and of course great use of colors to die for. I love them! I am lucky to have seen many in incomparable person but there were some that were new to me--the luminosity of the originals and your wonderful backlighting were undiminished in reproduction. Of course we love best of all discovering new things in the plates with each reading.
Congratulations in getting your book out. I am so happy that everyone else will get to share in the pleasure of looking at them.
Thank you again, I am most proud to possess a copy so wonderfully inscribed!"

I won't bore you with the rest of the rave reviews! ... Read more
