Product Description

Microsoft Office is the number-one selling software for the Mac; the Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Entourage applications are more dominant in the Mac world than they are among PC users. And Microsoft has greatly improved and enhanced Office 2004 to take advantage of the latest Mac OX features. In short, Microsoft Office for the Mac is wildly popular and better than ever.

But as incredible and powerful it is, the Office 2004 suite comes without a single page of printed instructions. That means you're left to forge your own path through its countless innovative and useful new features and tools--until now.

Office 2004 for Mac: The Missing Manual is the manual that should have been in the box. It's the map that clearly and easily guides both beginners and veterans through this new suite. Mark H. Walker, Franklin Tessler, and Paul Berkowitz deliver all the practical information you need to master the basics and make the most of all four Office 2004 programs--Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Entourage. It's four books in one!

According to Microsoft's own research, the average Office user taps into less than fifteen percent of the suite's features. With first-rate writing, a handcrafted index, and the trademark humor and clarity of every Missing Manual, Office 2004 for Mac: The Missing Manual will change that. Because this isn't an authorized book, Walker, Tessler, and Berkowitz candidly point out which features are gems in the rough worthy of your focused attention--and which are junkware that you best continue to overlook.

Whether you're an Office beginner eager to master one or all of the applications in the suite or a longtime Office user looking for detailed coverage of what's new (and what's removed) in Office 2004 and hoping to implement power-user techniques for better and more efficient work, this funny and friendly, comprehensive guide will prove indispensable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference
I am a writer. My publisher asks for the manuscript in word and as a Mac user there are nuances to Office products that I don't know. This book gave instructions that are easily understood. The book both builds on earlier material in the book or one can just look up information individually. A good companion book for MS Office for the Mac.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rather Underwhelming
I purchased Office 2004 for Macintosh with the goal of mastering Excel on my MacBook. Much to my dismay the three chapters on Excel were extremely basic, and failed to even mention such features as "VLOOKUP", amongst others. The summary claims the book is "your complete, authoritative, and entertaining guide".

Unfortunately for this Amazon consumer this book failed miserably to match the book's claims.

4-0 out of 5 stars Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac - Missing Manual
I found just what I was looking for in this manual. I'm sure I'll refer to it many times when I have questions in the future.

1-0 out of 5 stars Only for Beginners
I've used Office (primarily Word and Excel) extensively on a PC for over 12 years. This book could be used for a Mac or PC--it is not helpful at targeting the differences if you are switching from a PC to a MAC.Why there should be differences, I don't know, but there are.Mostly a lot of things that make it easier to use are apparently missing from the Mac version.Based on the description, I thought that it would describe the differences. There may be a way to do most of the things I miss from the PC version, but this book is not the way to learn them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Office 2004 manual
A big, heavy book that I wish I could read in bed but it weighs too much on my stomach. It has a lot of stuff and I will use it as a reference when I have a problem converting my old Word 2000 text to the newer 2004. I'm new to the Mac computers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Good Book
I've taught myself the basics of getting interesting graphics done with this book, so I consider it a great success. All of the VQS books in my library have been very useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, concise and easy to follow
I wanted a simple guide and went for my old favourite, Visual Quickstart Series. I was not disappointed. This guide is logical, succinct and without the padding one encounters in many guides. The index is very good as well. Highly recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars Illustrator CS3 for Windows and Macintosh
This gives you a hands on feeling when you read it.The best thing I can tell you is do NOT rush through reading and understanding this book.
Yes it is a Visual QuickStart Guide, but to get the most out of this book, I'd really say take your time, do little projects to get you comfortable with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice guide.
I start working with that guide and I think is very complete. The explanations are clear and everyone can understand them even if this is the first time they try illustrator.

I would like to have it with an exercise-example cd though.

Reccomended at max.

Product Description
Usually it’s only the “major” catastrophes—plane crashes, hurricanes, terrorist attacks—that make the news. And the most vividly remembered tragedies in recent history took place on 9/11/01.

But there are thousands of other disasters that never make the news. They happen to us, our family, our friends. Death, bankruptcy, divorce, terminal illness—any of these tragedies (and many others) can leave people feeling devastated. When a person’s world falls apart, it seems like nothing can put it back together again.

Mike MacIntosh, a pastor and police chaplain with specialized training in Critical Incident Stress Management, is specially qualified to help people in times of crisis. He has written this book to do just that. Drawing on over thirty years of pastoral and counseling experience, as well as some of the painful passages of his own life, Mike shows us the stages we go through during the course of any personal catastrophe. Then he helps us understand what needs to happen during each stage and gives us hope that we can survive our own disaster and move forward.

As a member of a National Disaster Response Team, Mike was on call for the month of September, 2001 and spent several weeks ministering to rescue personnel at the site of the World Trade Center disaster. Though he describes some of his New York encounters, this is not primarily a book about Ground Zero. Its main purpose is to help you make it through your own devastating experiences, and then move forward with God.

5-0 out of 5 stars When Your World Falls Apart
My daughter found this book listed in the newspaper around the time of the 9/11 anniversary this year (2003). Her husband, my son-in-law, suffers from Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS), and my daughter was coming apart at the seams. The book has given her strength, answered questions and gave her tools to cope. She says it has totally transformed her thinking. I ordered a copy for myself and cannot wait to read it. I hope it helps others who are facing a tough time. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to get you started with Flash
This is the first book that I bought to learn Flash. It introduced all the functionality of Macromedia Flash 8, and I still keep it as a handy reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informational
I hate Flash.I bought this book to help me with flash. It was helpful and I started to understand the basics of flash. This is a must have for anyone getting into flash.I used this book but was unfortunately still not able to successfully learn flash, I guess flash and I will never get along, but I have faith in you that this book will help

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
Great book--really helps me understand the concepts in Flash.Just in the first couple of chapters I knew alot more about the tools in flash and why I would use them.

2-0 out of 5 stars Somewhere between basic reference and step-by-step guide
I had to buy this book as it was used for a beginner's course on Flash, but I was very disappointed - not so much with the course but with this book. It tells you how to use this tool and how to use that tool, but never tells you WHY. Like, ok now I can convert to a MovieClip, but why would anyone want to do that, and so on and so on. If you know a bit about Flash, I guess you can easily dig up something in this book if you forgot how to motion tween or something - but then, as a reference guide as well, pretty much any other book on Flash is more thorough. Basically: this book is very superficial - I guess to not overload the novice - but then, it doesn't explain you much either. For the experienced Flash-user looking for a reference guide, look elsewhere.

Product Description

Combining a guide for the Museum visitor with scholarly discussions of all objects on display, this catalogue provides background on the society, history, technology, and commerce of the Etruscan and Faliscan cultures from the ninth through the first centuries B.C. Several groups of material illustrate social, historical, and technological phenomena currently at the forefront of scholarly debate and study, such as the crucial period of the turnover from Iron Age hut villages to the fully urbanized princely Etruscan cities, the development and extent of ancient literacy, and the position of women and children in ancient societies. Many special objects seldom found or generally inaccessible in the United States include Faliscan tomb groups, Etruscan inscriptions, helmets, and trade goods.

The catalogue presents and analyzes objects of warfare, weaving, animals, religious beliefs, architectural and terracotta roofing ornaments, Etruscan bronze-working for utensils, weapons, and artwork, and fine, generic portraiture. It discusses the symbolic meaning of such objects deposited in tombs as a chariot buried with a Faliscan lady at Narce, a senator's folding stool buried in a later tomb at Chiusi, and a pair of horse bits with the teeth of a chariot team still adhering to them where the teeth fell when sacrificed for a funeral in the fifth-century necropolis at Tarquinia—much later than the horse sacrifice was previously known in Etruria.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Dreamweaver 4 Introduction
Since this book is a bit outdated I won't write a long review, but this is a great book for anyone that is looking to learn how to use Dreamweaver 4 and get up and running to making your web site.Packed full of 600+ pages, I have always felt that the Quickstart guides are perfect books for anyone that is looking to quickly start learning a new technology, and that certainly is the case with this guide.Snappy writing, a nice layout, and all and all a great FEEL for the book (all the Quickstart guides have this feel) make this a proven winner.

**** RECOMMENDED

3-0 out of 5 stars My adventures with Dreamweaver
J. Tarin Tower's book, "Dreamweaver for Windows and Macintosh" is a good book, as far as it goes; but there is nothing (as far as I can find) about Timelines, which are important if you're going to create any kind of song and dance on your website. It has been helpful to me in the self-taught business of learning Dreamweaver. While it is very polished and well organized, with step by step instructions on how to implement the many features of the program, it is weak in terms of the big picture, how and why various sub-routines can be used to solve a design problem and achieve a particular effect. I'd say it's the best book in its field, mainly because there isn't anything else out there - yet, as far as I know.

4-0 out of 5 stars Top notch teaching manual
Listen Software Solutions: The book is perfect for teaching: 1. It has two to three visual screen shots for each page 2. Step by Step instruction lead the student through the concept 3. Notes and definitions to provide clarity and help tie concepts together.

The book starts off simple by explaining and demonstrating the dreamweaver development environment: workspace, planning your site, and moving files.

The book assumes you have little or not knowledge of HTML or Javascript. So they cover: edit HTML, working with images, working with links, fonts and characters, paragraphs and block formating, forms, and javascript behaviors. This was ok.

But the section on Style Sheets was excellent.I've create style sheets from scratch, but using dreamweaver made the task very easy.

Since, I've already have a strong understand of javascript and html. The book was more about learning how to use the dreamweaver tool rather than learning how to code a web page.
Filling out forms and modifying behavior events was helpful in terms of learning how to use the dreamweaver tool.

I found the multimedia section fun.The authors do an excellent job explaining and demonstrating timelines, keyframes, layers, and behavior events.

This was a very user friendly book to read and use.The book has a learn by example approach to learning how to use dreamweaver.

3-0 out of 5 stars This book is good but it left some important steps out.
I am new to dreamweaver and this book has quickly helped me become productive BUT it has a few problems.

Sometimes there are crucial steps missing from detailed step-by-step procedures and these have left me in the proverbial. For example, when explaining how to make a link appear in a popup window that does not have any controls, I followed what the book said and I got two windows popping up instead of one! It did not say I would need to open the popup window on the mousedown event.I had to figure that out for myself. Surely they could have had somebody test the examples in the book before publishing it.

Also, the book does not show you objectives and how to achieve them by tying together different parts of dreamweaver. This makes explanations of different dreameaver topics feel disjointed. For example, it discussed layers and tables seperately without much guidance on layout in general. As a beginner, I needed more guidance in what I should be aiming for with layout. I needed more than just a listing of the options available in dreamweaver.

On the other hand, a lot of stuff in this book is very good. The explanations are clear and the illustrations are great. I have learned a lot about dreamweaver but I reckon I should have bought the HOT Dreamweaver book instead. It seems to be a better guide towards the whys and wherefores of building a site with dreamweaver.

I am disappointed with this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.
If you want to learn Dreamweaver, this is NOT a good choice. I bought this and Lynda Weinstein's Hands-On-Training (HOT) for Dreamweaver. Weinstein's HOT book is awesome and I highly recommend it. The QuickStart Guide is purely a reference manual and you might as well use the manual that comes with Dreamweaver (it's better). ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Another excellent book!
I've been a fan of Peachpit Press books for a few years now.Their books are always well written and laid out to make them excellent for learning and later for reference. This book takes the somewhat confusing task of setting up a personal web server and breaks it down to a simple process.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, well-written, well-illustrated reference
This is an excellent learning tool and reference. It is written very well; the instructions are concise and clear. The book is well illustrated.

I don't think this is the best book to start with if you are just learning about dynamic applications. I would suggest that you begin with Jeffrey Bardzell's Macromedia Dreamweaver MX Dynamic Applications. If you are using DW8, don't worry--it's not out of date. The tutorials in Bardzell's book will enable you to build a web site using ASP or Coldfusion. (I am using ASP).

Lucinda Dyke's book, Macromedia DW 8 Advanced, will clearly explain and reinforce what you learned with Bardzell's book. With these two books, you should have no problem building a web site with dynamic applications.

The book has one flaw: the lack of complete exercise files. The author refers to the Cafe Townsend tutorial that comes with Dreamweaver, but these files do not completely correspond with the exercises. There are additional files that you can download from the Peachpit web site, but these files are not very helpful. You will have to improvise a little to complete some of the exercises. Hopefully, the author will get some feedback encouraging her to create a more fully set of files for download.

Also, if you want to learn how to create a web site using dynamic apps, it would be helpful to have a fundamental knowledge of databases.

Excellent book; well worth the money! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise, clear, and effective
EXCELLENT reference book. Material is presentedly lucidly, without the superfluous details. The extra visual guides facilitate the learning process extremely well. If you are looking for a book that covers the fundamentals (including flowing text and styling sheets), I HIGHLY recommend this visual quick guide book.

After all, who wants to read a verbose material that never seems to address your questions?

5-0 out of 5 stars From a novice Quarker
Those of us who communicate in spoken English sometimes despair of technical manuals written by those who don't. This is true even for those of us who are quite literate in computer-speak. This Vistual Quickstart Guide to QuarkXPress 6 is a wonderful exception. Quark is a highly intuitive program that makes sense once one grasps the basics, and I found this an excellent reference guide to learning this powerful program. However, I found it worked best if I was at my computer exploring the areas being discussed in the text. What was most helpful to me were the screen illustrations.

2-0 out of 5 stars Have you ever read the dictionary cover to cover?
Reading this book in order to learn QuarkXpress is akin to reading the dictionary cover to cover in order to learn the English language. Can it be done? Maybe. But it is not recommended.

This book may be useful as a detailed reference guide on a given subject but it should not be used to learn Quark. After attempting to read this book cover to cover for 70+ pages I had to put it down and find another quick start book to learn Quark.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and concise
I have read a couple of the Visual Quick Start books by these authors and find them to be readable and concise.
The way the material is portrayed is precise, and conveys the general idea of the task to be accomplished with a minimum of extraneous information.
Highly recommended.
The only downside is that there is not example material included with the books.

I'll stay away from long reviews. If you have used Elaine Weinman's books before, you know to expect a first-class guide. If you haven't, put down the ... bible and go for this one. I taught myself Quark 4 from one of her books and these are invaluable references. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good starting place
There is a new (February 2005) edition of this book available as a PDF from Spiderworks. It's an update for OS X, using the XCode software that comes free with OS X. Otherwise, the book is unchanged, including a few minor errors carried through from the 1995 edition. I don't know of any other resource for learning C on the Mac, but I don't hesitate to recommend it. It could use more programming exercises; I recommend supplementing it with Oualline's "Practical C Programming". After you've done this, read the ObjectiveC primer that comes with XCode and use a Cocoa programming book by Hillegas or Anguish.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good for beginners, but not for starting in Mac.
I've found this book a good introduction to C, it has refreshed my forgotten c knowledges with good explanations and examples.
But I haven't learned about Mac programming. Just one chapter and not in a depth way.

5-0 out of 5 stars The greatest book!
Now this is what a programming book for the mac is supposed to be! From the beginning this book takes you on a tour introducing you to the mac and how to program it, with useful source code and good exsamples.

The only minor about this book is the fact it`s nearly 6 years old, but it`s not a big problem. It`s well written, and I can absolutely recommend it to everyone.

2-0 out of 5 stars Quasi-helpful book
I have to admit, this book was very good at teaching me the concepts of programming (structures, pointers, variables, algorithm design, etc) but for learning the C language it was terrible. Very little Macintoshprogramming is covered at all, it's just the dry ANSI C. Needless to say, Idid not know how to program after using this book. However, it was a usefulguide (albeit a bit confusing at times) to learning the basics ofprogramming. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Maya 8
I used this book in my Maya class at school. Having no talent at art, drawing or artistic rendering, this book was very helpful. Following the chapters to learn how to use Maya, by the end of the class I was quite comfortable creating shapes for different purposes. The use of lighting, shadowing, projecting, etc were fairly straight forward. I still am not able to render detailed things like faces or animals but, I am able to do rather nicely with furniture and other basic items around the house or office if a scene calls for it. Definitely recommend for the beginner to intermediate. Also a good reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful...
I'm currently taking a Maya class and my teacher recommended this book. I have to say, it is very helpful. The directions are very clear and easy to understand. I mainly use this book as reference when I want to review some of the lessons I learned in class. So far I have no complaints. If you are interested in learning Maya, I would recommend this book. There aren't any tutorials (for example, how to model a hand, a foot, etc.) but it does teach you the basic tools to help you get there.

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty good reference for us noobs
I'm currently taking an introductory Maya class, and this book was the recommended text for the class by our instructor.I'm definitely glad that I have this book.I use it quite often as a reference. For times when you forget how to say move a pivot, or are having trouble getting snapping to do what you want, this book is easy to pick up and find such answers. On the flipside though, if you are new to Maya, and trying to learn it on your own, I don't think that this book is a very good "cover-to-cover" type of read. For that, and more of a "course substitute" I recommend the "learning maya" books.I also recommend video tutorials by digital-tutors (you can "google" them, they have a website). Those tutorials take you step-by-step how to do various full projects in maya, which is extremely helpful and supplements these books really well.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved my life!!
Yes, this book saved my life in my beginning Maya class. My teacher recomended it, and I'm very disapointed that he doesn't require it. It gives simple, step by step instructions for individual tasks that can be used for modeling, rigging, parenting, animating etc. My one complaint is that it does not mention anything about using locators, but as a basic "How To" Maya book, I highly recomend it. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Moderate at Best
If you have a slower or older computer don't bother. You have to download all the information from the disk onto your computer, and it could cause a horrible lag.

Buying the online code may be a better route, you can go to cengagebrain.com and buy an online subscription for $32. Also if your getting it for a class, you can get it right away by the online subscription. Everything is updated online-unlike the disk and all you have to do after purchasing is sign in online. Allot of foods/recipes that people add to the program are saved into a database, so its nice to not to have to put in as many individual foods or recipes that are not listed.

However, if your looking at price as your main factor, the disk is probably the best way to go. It doesn't have a whole lot of foods, other than very basic and healthy American foods. I had a problem finding allot of foods and had to type allot of my own recipes in but price was what drew me to buy the disk.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Packaged and New!
This was just as descibed, its new. The software was easy to install and super easy to use. It didn't take up to much memory. Even after the class is over and your into dieting or other related to nutrition this is a great way to keep up with what you eat and compare it to statistical information. 5/5 stars~

4-0 out of 5 stars Diet Analysis+
I really like this software. I bought it for a class I ended up not taking. I am a weightlifter, bodybuilder and fighter and this software (although a bit time consuming) allows me to track my daily activities and my food and nutritional intake. It is very easy to use and has a very large database of foods and activities, it allows you to input custom foods and recipies as well.

1-0 out of 5 stars Untrustworthy!
I was supposed to receive a CD, and I received an empty package the first time, so I contacted the seller. They sent me another one, and what do you know- it was yet another blank package.I am getting a refund; it's worth the extra $10 to buy it from the bookstore at school- at least I know I'm getting what I ordered!
