4-0 out of 5 stars Great Transition and Starting Point
I made the leap to Mac this past week and purchased this book as soon as I ordered my MacBook Pro. This is a quick read and I finished it using Kindle for the iPad on a roundtrip from DFW to Boston. There are some weird page breaks on the Kindle edition and the pictures and diagrams do not have the resolution to be enlarged and of much use.

This is exactly what I needed to get started and highly recommend the book. There are some areas it goes into more detail than I needed (all the ways to run Windows on a Mac) and some others that were less detailed and helpful (how to integrate Mail, iCal, etc. with Exchange Server - particularly Exchange Servers prior to 2007 - it doesn't). These are my only comments that keep it from being a 5 Star Review and I understand that everybody will have diffrent areas of emphasis, it is still a very worthwhile $15.

If you order your Mac online it will arrive in about 5 business days, more than enough time to read this book. It is also easy to have it open next to you when going through setting up preferences and some disaster preparedness issues like an additional Admin User Account.

I recommend the Portable Genius series.

Best of Luck.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a useful book for experienced editors.
I've been video editing on Final Cut Pro for about ten years now and I'm always looking for more information on ways to improve my work which is why I purchased this book. While this book may be very interesting to readers who are still new to editing and Final Cut specifically, I flipped through this book and couldn't find one specific tutorial that I wasn't already familiar with. I was looking for a guide of clever tips and shortcuts to improve my skills and work flow but ended up with a refresher guide to Final Cut editing. While the quality of this book is good, I don't see this being useful for experienced editors.

Richard Harrington
Robbie Carman
ISBN-13: 978-0-321-60472-9

This is a fantastic resource for those already well-versed in the fields of video production and image editing. You won't learn the actual software mentioned (After Effects and Final Cut Studio), but rather gain an overall perspective and useful tips while following along with the projects presented.

I found the production planning, budget, and project organization chapters especially useful in an otherwise technical resource guide. There were lots of useful tips on the sides of the pages as well. A lot of work goes into a production, and I learned about the various roles and expectations during the process. I also found the terminology useful for getting up to speed with real-world scenarios.

There's a DVD included that covers extra training as well as files that correspond with the lessons in the book. The appendix includes an excellent section on Working with DSLR Video.

The book's two authors not only teach the software but have gone on to speak at conferences, write books, and contribute regularly online.

5-0 out of 5 stars look no further
I love love love this book. Read it cover to cover twice already. Been in this field for 30 years and still learned much from these two guys. The training videos alone are worth the price of the book.As is the chapter on how to organize a project more efficiently. As is the real-world-logical suggestions about how to use type in Motion. As is-- oh, stop reading this and buy the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Pros and Hobbyists
I love this book. It is a daily reference. As a producer editor who has been working in tv for a long time, I'm not easy to impress. But by page 6 of this book Rich Harrington and Robbie Carman were teaching me things I didn't know. I wish I had this type of resource when I was starting out. It covers so much about how to actually make a video. Even PC users can benefit from the templates and information contained in this book. A clear winner - Video Made on a Mac: Production and Postproduction Using Apple Final Cut Studio and Adobe Creative Suite

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading
This book isn't just good... it's essential reading for all editor's and digital content creators.

What Harrington and Carman manage to do in fewer than 400 pages is help you sharpen your skills while providing tips and tricks on everything from Greenscreen solutions to crucial steps you must take for organization, archiving, review and approval.

A quick and easy (yet incredibly informative) read, you'll find yourself keeping a copy in your office as well as wanting one for your Kindle so they're guidance will always be close at hand. These guys are tops in their field for a reason.Whether you're working with Apple Final Cut Studio or Adobe Creative Suite... this book (and companion DVD with over 5 hours of training videos) will help you master the dark arts of "good" video creation and post-production.

I've been editing corporate videos, concerts, and indie features for over 15 years, and I still don't know it all... but these guys help me look as if I do. Again, if you make your living working in post-production, this is an absolutely indispensable tool for your arsenal. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Books!
We bought 2 of these books for our 1 1/2 year old son who LOVES tractors. He now can't go anywhere without them.I just ordered the other 4 to complete the collection since as much as he carries them around and sits quietly (alone) and looks at them, they are sure to be WELL worn in a few months. He is already recognizing the animals and mimicing the animal sounds from looking at the pictures. Our 4 year old daughter (who is HUGE princess fan)loves to climb up in the chair and listen to the stories as well!

5-0 out of 5 stars There is more than one way to win.
My three-year-old son loves the Tractor Mac series. In this one, Tractor Mac goes to the county fair to compete against the big tractors and comes up short. However, on his way home, he fixes the broken carousel to the delight of all the children proving that there is more than one way to be a winner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!!!
Our very energetic 16 month-old loves this book.It is often his first pick from the bookshelf. While he rarely sits still long enough to read an entire book, he is quite content to sit from cover to cover for this one.He loves pointing out all of the animals and the different tractors, and he always grins when we reach the last line of "Tractor Mac you're a true winner!"This is a great book for country and city children alike! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars MAc OS X Command Line: Unix Under The Hood
Hi all, I have a pleasure in letting you know that I got my book as I expected. My suggestion is it would be nice if an ebook of this kind can be developed so as customers that bought it can download for an option to read from the iPad or Kindle.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is more for Unix novices
I found 2 chapters to be very useful, Chapter 12 on Working with Users, Groups and Permissions and Ch. 14 on Managing Programs and Processes. The remaining chapters are pretty much standard Unix commands; but, very well written for Unix novices.Overall the book is well written that I would use it as a Unix reference for commands that I am familiar with (example, didn't know ls -F would show me the directories with a slash).

5-0 out of 5 stars It is really good book, pleasure to spend time with.
OS X UNIX is amazingly friendly and accessible. Some people who had never used command line before, type commands and work with the operating system directly as a "cool guys" in movies! This book is very helpful and well written and it is serves as a very nice reference. If you really need the initial training I would say that "UNIX Essentials" DVD I found here on Amazon is a nice option. It is complete UNIX course recorded and this book and a video they contribute one another greatly. You improve the reading and by reading you improve what you have seen.
The book is very particular about the subjects that related to OS X and because there are some differences between OS X and other UNIXes it is nice to have a book that deals with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mostly good stuff
Structured in a distinctive but helpful way, "The Mac OS X Command Line: Unix Under the Hood" is quite a solid introduction to the command line, a mechanism that not only speeds and simplifies many tasks but also lets you do a number of things unavailable under the GUI. Its 400+ pages, arranged fundamentally as a tutorial, are replete with basic steps and shortcuts alike. The book covers everything from Terminal ("gateway" to the command line) to the file system to text editing and printing; in the later chapters, it moves on to such relatively advanced topics as file compression and archiving, groups and permissions, networking, program and process management, system maintenance, and shell configuration. Interleaved between the chapters (and here is where the book's structure is distinctive) are sections devoted to key Unix concepts that recur to the point of transcending multiple chapters; these nine sections, referred to as Interludes, tackle things like command syntax, pathnames, redirection, the "open" command (more powerful than it may sound), wildcards, and ways of automating commands.

Besides obviously providing a nice treatment of the basics, the book offers plenty of advanced material for the experienced user. The index is nice to see and easy to use. Other nice touches are a command list, chapter summaries in the introduction, and an appendix with additional readings.

Allowing for a variety of problem areas, in large measure evidently outside the author's control, this is a book well worth reading and using. It is true that some of the editing errors are thoroughly confusing (references to subsequent material as supposedly already presented, references to misidentified chapters, related graphics positioned out of logical order, and so on); still, the book is redeemed by the readily understood and applied, comprehensive, and mostly well-organized content.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clear and easy to follow
As anyone who's used one of Kirk McElhearn's other books on the Mac OS will be unsurprised to hear, I found this book very easy to follow -- so easy in fact that I found I could skip the first few chapters. That's probably because I'm not a complete command-line virgin (I remember the days before Windows and the first Mac OS, and as a web designer I've done a bit of tinkering in Unix on some of the web servers I use) but even if you are, from my impression of the first chapters, this book can tell you everything you need to know to start using the command line.

The book is designed as a chapter-by-chapter tutorial, teaching you the things you need to know in a methodical order, but it contains enough information, and has a good enough index, to be used as your main reference for the command line once you've mastered the basics.

My only criticism would be that while it tells you how to do all sorts of useful things, it doesn't have enough real-world, detailed examples of the kind of uses you could put your new knowledge to -- I was expecting some kind of 'case studies' feature, giving real examples of how to use commands you've just learned to automate your back-up procedures, for example. The information's all in there, but to some extent you have to work out what you can do with it for yourself.

But I guess that's only a minor criticism -- you probably wouldn't read this book in the first place if you didn't have some idea of the kind of thing you can do with the command line.

So all in all, it's a great starting point, and I can see that in the future I'm going to find it a valuable reference. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Computer Reference Books
I received Excel X for Mac OS X in excellent condition. Love it. Thank you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners
This is the second book I've purchased written by Maria Langer. The first was Mac OS X Panther (Visual QuickStart Guide).Like the book for panther. Excel X is great for those new to the program, or for those who have little experience in formating the spreadsheets, conjuring up formulas, and establish and managing lists.

For more experienced/advanced users, you'll appreciate the book as quick reference and the nice tips you'll find to increase your efficiency. But if you're looking for more advanced techniques (i.e. scripts, macros, advanced formatting) you might want to look elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent way to quickly transfer your Excel skills from Wintel to Mac.
This book probably works just as well for an introduction to Excel for the ones who have no experience with this program.Given that I have extensive experience with Excel, my review focuses on this guide's ability to transfer your Excel skills from the Wintel to the Mac OS environment.

This guide does a very good job of transferring the skills you have acquired in Excel/Wintel to Excel/Mac OS in the minimum of time. The format of the book is even superior to the Dummies series (my favorite until now). This is because each page is smartly divided between a relevant simple list of action steps to take to achieve a specific function. And, the other half of the page shows actual pictures of what the screen will look like. So, the emphasis on actual visuals is second to none (it is ahead of the Dummies series on that count).

It is the simplest stuff who will baffle you at first. The more advanced features of Excel are common whether you work on the Mac or the Wintel platform. But, what is unsettling is that the simplest features are different. When you first work with Excel for Mac, just the simple viewing and editing of cells is different. It leads one to believe that Excel for Mac and Wintel are really incompatible. They are actually very compatible. But, you just have to understand how the Mac environment works. It is a little bit different.Once you get the hang of it, it's a cruise.

After studying this guide, you will quickly realize that Excel for Mac is just as flexible and powerful an analytical tool as Excel/Wintel.It even has some advantages. The Clipboard is more visible and useful. The Calculator feature gives you more space and control when developing complex formulas. The List function offers more robust database capabilities than the traditional Excel. It integrates Access capabilities into Excel. The graph function has several additional 3-D capabilities. Thus, overall I strongly recommend this book, that will quickly teach you Excel for the Mac.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mac users do well to get Windows Excel books
I'm a long-time (since 1984) Mac user and devotee, so I'm not being heretical when I say that the best books about Excel are written for a Windows audience. The Mac versions of Excel are sufficiently compatible with the Windows versions that almost everything you learn from a Windows book will apply on the Mac. There are so many more Windows users (and especially power users) of Excel that many more books have been written for them. If you want to become a power user, try "Microsoft Excel 2000 Formulas" by John Walkenbach.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great 4 Beginners - Power Users Will Be Disappointed
I've bought several of the Visual Quickstart Guides for other Mac applications so when I decided I wanted to become a real Excel power user, I thought this would be a good book to start with. For those just getting into Excel, this would be the place to start.(In fairness, this is probably their target audience in the first place.) I even found it useful for gaining a better understanding some functions I hadn't attempted in the past.

My only complaint is that it just doesn't go deep enough.I wanted some help with formulas in general and more advanced formulas in particular (e.g. HLOOKUP, VLOOKUP, etc. and nested formulas) and the book didn't provide any more information on formulas than the application's help file, which isn't much.

To be helpful, it would be nice to see a nice long list of example formulas with descriptions on how or when you would use them.

OK, maybe I'm being a bit harsh, but hey, I bought the book and was a little disappointed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Bet for Novice Explorers
I owned a Mac for 5 years but had my son nearby and simply asked for help whenever I needed it. Great relationship but I never really learned how to navigate on my own. So when I recently purchased a new Mac, I wanted to do more than just phone for help. This book is perfect for me and anyone new to the Mac. It has projects that not only introduce you to the possibilities, but step-by-step reminders for things you won't do often and may have forgotten. There are 54 chapters/projects that run the gamut from basic navigation to creative ideas - all making life easier as there is no guesswork as to how to find something using the proper computer language, which I will never master. If you are a techie, this is probably too easy, but for someone like me, it is fun and informative and sits beside my computer for quick reference or a casual exploration. Use it to manage files, edit and store pictures, shortcuts, foreign language help, and finding all those things once they are on the computer. Highly recommended for its simplicity and helpful guides.

4-0 out of 5 stars Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac OS 10 Visual QuickStart Guide
This books makes learning the workings of Microsoft Office 2004 super easy. The photos and instructions take the reader step-by-step through the inner workings of the program. A must for the beginner and a resource for the experienced user. Learn Word, Excel and PowerPoint, as well as Entourage and more by using this guide any way you wish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gets You Started Quickly
Aimed at the beginning and intermediate user of Microsoft Office for Macintosh, this book is part of the Visual Quickstart Guide. The philosophy of the series is to use a lot of photographs so that you can see what the screen should look like as you do various tasks during the learning process.

The organization of the book, after an introduction that you really should read or at least glance over, is modular just like the software. There's a part on Word, on Excel, on PowerPoint, and on Entourage. Each part is self standing and can be used independently of the other parts. You can read the part on the software you need without having to go do everything at once. Although to be sure you will sooner or later want to use the various applications together, and for this there is Part VI: Combining the Applications.

As a visually oriented book, there are hundreds of pictures/drawings to illustrate just about every point. It's a very fast way to get started.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent quick guide to Microsoft Office
This 453-page book is written for beginning and intermediate users of Microsoft Office 2004. It blends short, well-written sections on the various parts of Office 2004 with screen shots and other graphics that show you visually how to do things. This is a winning combination and makes learning about Office 2004 easy and fun.I also was pleased to find short "tips" following the various discussions that further enhanced your ability to use the feature being discussed.

Starting the book is a good summary of what's new with the four components of Office 2004, namely Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Entourage. This is followed by separate"Parts" for each of these four applications plus an introductory section and a special ending section. The latter contains instruction on combining some of the aspects of the four applications.Within each of the major "Parts" are Chapters of major features each broken down further into short sections focusing on the various useful ways to use various features of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Entourage.

For example, Part II is on Microsoft Word.It is broken down into 6 chapters focusing on working with word, document formatting, text formatting, adding graphics, creating tables, and other word features. Then within each of those are several subsections providing specific help on various aspects of each chapter topic. For instance, within "document formatting" you'll find specific focus on paper size and orientation, margins, headers and footers, page numbers, inserting page breaks, creating multiple sections, and multiple columns. And all are user-friendly and quite helpful!

This book is part of the "Visual Quickstart Guide" series of Peachpit Press, and the again lives up to the other fine visual guides from this company.I was also impressed by the knowledge shared in this book by the skilled author whose past works included more than 50 other books and hundreds of computer-related reviews and articles for various well-known computer magazines. He knows his subject and has the skills to guide the reader to a most satisfying understanding of Office 2004.

All and all, I would highly recommend this helpful book and I'm sure I will be referring to it many times whenever I have a question about Office 2004 - and I have confidence that I'll find the answer! ... Read more

The Mac has fully embraced OpenGL throughout its visual systems. In fact, Apple's highly efficient, modern OpenGL implementation makes Mac OS X one of today's best platforms for OpenGL development. OpenGL® Programming on Mac OS® X is the first comprehensive resource for every graphics programmer who wants to create, port, or optimize OpenGL applications for this high-volume platform.

Leading OpenGL experts Robert Kuehne and J. D. Sullivan thoroughly explain the Mac's diverse OpenGL APIs, both old and new. They illuminate crucial OpenGL setup, configuration, and performance issues that are unique to the Mac platform. Next, they offer practical, start-to-finish guidance for integrating key Mac-native APIs with OpenGL, and leveraging the full power of the Mac platform in your graphics applications.

Coverage includes

  • A thorough review of Mac hardware and software architectures and their performance implications
  • In-depth, expert guidance for accessing OpenGL from each of the Mac's core APIs: CGL, AGL, and Cocoa
  • Interoperating with other Mac APIs: incorporating video with QuickTime, performing image effects with Core Image, and processing CoreVideo data
  • Analyzing Mac OpenGL application performance, resolving bottlenecks, and leveraging optimizations only available on the Mac
  • Detecting, integrating, and using OpenGL extensions

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs some work
I would agree with the other two reviewers that the book is in general well laid out and gives some good background for mac os and opengl. However I found the authors style somewhat meandering. For example VBOs are introduced, then something else is talked about and then back to the VBOs again, sometimes its very difficult to tell exactly which technology they are talking about.
This would be ok if the code samples made it easier - but in fact the code samples are a mess and largely missing the important examples referenced in the text.
For example the "please tune me" example mentioned in the other review? Not there. The vertex submission example - also in chapter 11 - also not there. I not sure whether its standard practice that I should be debugging the code as well in order to get it to work. A simple example - the paths to resources (eg Quicktime movies) are hard coded!
Currently it is a useful reference for me - but more because it brings to light a certain technology (eg an Apple extension) - but then I usually have to go elsewhere for it to be explained. In conclusion : it needs a good editor who understands the topic, and whomever the code was outsourced to, they should not be paid. In addition authors should not bother putting up a website if they are not going to respond to queries - just put a CD/DVD in the back of the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars multiple APIs to choose from
The text describe the nitty gritty of coding or porting your OpenGL applications to the Mac OS X environment. To a limited extent, the book has a general treatment of programming in OpenGL. But it is not meant as a text on the latter. Instead the focus is on the "issues" that making for possible problems on OS X.

One of which is that OS X has 2 types of windows, Carbon and Cocoa. It might perhaps be nicer if there was only one. But this is what you have to deal with. The Apple OpenGL (AGL) is the interface to Carbon, while you need the Cocoa OpenGL for Cocoa. It is slightly unusual that a major platform would have 2 types, and you may want to code just for one type. The book gives many details about both APIs, as well as the GLUT API. An evenhanded discussion. Different readers might well have different preferences.

Some of you should check out the discussion about multithreading, if intensive graphics performance is needed in your applications. The OS X OpenGL engine is said to have much better performance due to its multithreading, than typical serial engines.

5-0 out of 5 stars Boost your OpenGL Programming Productivity
This book has a lot of shining points. First, all its explanations are crystal clear, focused into the concepts and techniques OpenGL developers really need. Furthermore, the book comprises OpenGL architecture and configuration on OS X, and the various APIs we can use in order to create OpenGL applications, specifically, CGL, AGL, Cocoa, (our old buddy) GLUT, and X11 APIs. A chapter focused into API interoperability is also included. But there is much more information in this book: history notes, a germane review of Mac's hardware, OS X programming, compatibility between Mac platforms, and a discussion about OpenGL extensions. Appendices contain an useful Glossary and notes about Cocoa API for OpenGL in Leopard. Last but not least, the book is the OpenGL/Mac companion we were demanding.

This, however, is not a book for starting to learn OpenGL (use the OpenGL SuperBible or the Red Book instead). This is a book aimed at two categories of programmers: Mac developers in general, and those with OpenGL foundations who want to explore the enormous benefits of OpenGL development on Mac OS X. I do strongly believe that any OpenGL developer will benefit of studying this great book.

Personally, Chapter 11 is the one I've enjoyed the most. The technical wisdom revealed in such chapter almost justifies by itself the full cost of the book. It's such a fine chapter. The almost 5 pages covering the "Axioms for Designing High-Performance OpenGL Applications" are very interesting, particularly the care we must have when doing our OpenGL drawing in Object-Oriented programs; we could easily incur considerable glVertex overhead, if our code is not properly structured. The little tutorial section "Putting It All Together" includes a detailed optimization of an OpenGL program, "Please Tune Me". Delicious. Very Recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Alaska Apple User Group Review
Pro:Excellent tool for exploring the operating system Snow Leopard for purchase.Outstanding reference from install & getting started to troubleshooting. It is light, easy to handle, read, and look things up.Information is outlined for use page by page from overview of the critical path to deep drill down as needed. The author writes from an experiencedhands on approach.I can open any chapter in this book and work back or forward without getting lost.It is a gem.The accompanying DVD is an added bonus. It is great for working through difficult learning curves, as needed for those times when I need IT hand holding! It's the cat's meow.

Cons:I really can't think of one.Maybe that it dampens my interest in exploring other reference tools for this operating system.Maybe that it is not out in a Kindle version yet.Hair splitting.

3-0 out of 5 stars For newbies only
I was about to switch over from PC to Mac after nearly 20 years and a high degree of familiarity (and frustration) with Windows. I wanted a visual guide of where to find things and how to do them; because obviously the Mac operating system is organized differently from what I had been using. The book, with nice pictures and step by step instructions, succeeds in providing the bare essentials for a someone new to computer; but is woefully incomplete. There are simply many subjects not touched on (there's for instance, no mention of the fact that Macs are not designed to Defrag, and a few that could have been omitted (does someone starting out really want to tackle Terminal(from what I can discern the Mac equivalent of a DOS window), when first starting out?The CD provided with the book provides little more than some files to push around.I had a ton of those from my previous computer.
I found that, perhaps because Snow Leopard is so stable and logical, I could stumble around the system, opening menus and windows and teaching myself how to do virtually everything I can do on a PC.If one is not intimidated by a new machine, and has some prior experience on computers, there surely are better books out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for all levels of OSX Snow Leopard users
I am a seasoned OSX user and have been working on Macs for years. The content in this book has been enlightening and is on-the-money for any level of user. Whether your just making the switch to Macintosh or a veteran, this book is filled with detailed information. Every thing from navigating the finder to setting up your own home network, Chad has covered it all. This book is a must have, ready to grab at any moment of trouble for me. I even figured out how to get that old printer to work with Snow Leopard with the CUPS information in this book. The instructional DVD that is included has all the files needed for the step-by-step tutorials in the book as well as the bonus video training too. I have already recommend this book to friends that have not had a lot of experience with Mac OSX till now and they love it. Thank you to the author for all the hard work! No detail has been left out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
I am very critical of poorly written, trite books. This book is clearly not that!Very fresh, funny, entertaining, and fun!I am a new fan of Mac Barnett. My daughter loved this book! Please keep them coming Mac (we want to see a whole series of these books!)

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book with nonstop adventure!
Need a good summer read? Try The Case fo the Mistaken Identity by Mac Barnett. It's a great mystery with nonstop action featuring young Steve Brixton who has a national treasure to find, secret agent bad guys to outwit and cops who want to get their cuffs on him. There are plenty of laughs, secret passages and funny disguises along with the thrills in this fun book! As a fan of Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys, I loved the references to the Bailey Brothers and the old fashioned type pictures.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Hardy Boys wanna be.
I really wanted to like this book. From the blurb that tells about the book on the inside cover, it sounded like a great read. Well, I was wrong.

The Plot: Steve is an amature detective, and a darn good one. When he has to do a school report on something he doesn't want to do one on, his life soon changes, and not for the best.Soon, the government, and ninja librarians are after him. They think that he's a super spy on a dangerous mission for the invisible Mr. E.Steve has to rely on his skills as a detectiveand his knowledge of the The Brixton Brothers mysteries to help him. That's all I really want to say on the plot. I don't want to give to much away.

This book falls short on so many levels.First, Barnett has a strange writing style. He uses a lot of parentheses when he writes, and it's very distracting. He'll be going along (then have something like this) then continue with the story. As I said, it's very distracting and annoying. He also used, "aka" a lot. For example, "Carol aka my mother"this is done many times at the start, and it grew on my nerves.

I also didn't like the main bad guy. When you find out who the bad guy is, and why they did what they did, I found that very weak and sort of a cop out.It was just over the top silly.

If you have boys that you want to get hooked on reading, then I'd say start with this series. I'm sure they'll love it.I do plan to tell my students about this series. For me, it just falls short.

This is just a Hardy Boys wannabe.

5-0 out of 5 stars hilarious - a page turner...
my 9 year old and I adored this book - we couldn't read it fast enough and she can't wait until tomorrow to tell her friends/class about this "MUST READ!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Mac Barnett!
My 10 year old son isn't one to get into a book. Not for lack of my trying: I've got a huge children's library and have introduced lots of different genres. "The Brixton Brothers" is a GEM. My son devoured it like nothing since "Skinnybones".A perfect combination of action, adventure, and humor, "The Case of the Case of Mistaken Identity" is an engaging read for 3-5th graders. The brillant tounge-in-cheek humor and great story line makes this a kind of "National Treasure" -like entertainment. We look forward to many more!!! From this first installment, I would characterize "The Brixton Brothers" as: Barbara Park's take on "The Hardy Boys" with a "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" spin." Love it. ... Read more

Conflict of interest disclosure: Wiley Publishing Inc.provided a free copy of "Mac OS X Snow Leopard all in one for Dummies" to me for the purpose of the review.
Being a previous consumer of the "for Dummies" product line (juggling, Intermediate Italian, French Wine, Catholicism, and a few others) I have found the books to be written in a humorous not so serious way that really helps keep me interested in reading more.I am not embarrassed to admit that these books speak to me...Feel free to make your assumptions now.
Being diagnosed with S.O.D. (Shiny Object Syndrome) , I may not have noticed a printed user guide accompanying the Snow Leopard OSX software. This book fills the role well.An easy to navigate index helps you zero in on a topic quickly. The brand's signature Icon's found throughout this tome, help readers easily identify important reminders, warnings, tips, and notable tech stuff. And for this book particularly, because of it's size (700+pages), no matter where my wife would move it too, I had no problem finding it.
My first thought, was that I didn't think I would really learn anything new from this book. Surprise. There are many little jewels of knowledge throughout, i.e. Did you know that iTunes will allow you to listen to radio stations?Yeah, well I did to, but what I didn't know was that if the radio station you would like to listen to is not listed in iTunes, you can add it to the list.
"...4Dummies" provides a well organized easy to read reference to programs in the OSX upgrade: iTunes, iWeb, iDVD, Garage Band, iChat, iMovie, etc.Buy it and keep it close to your Mac, you will use it.

1-0 out of 5 stars tough book
I like the Dummies Books. However this one is a hard read, the chapters seem to wander & I will stay away from this author in the future. there is another "Snow Leopard for Dummies" ( different author ) which is much better. I get it from the local library.DeVitus,Bob is author of that one

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Info
Bought this for my brother who had never used a computer before. He is happy I sent this to him, the book is easy to read and follow. We tried to find at the local bookstore but I had better luck on Amazon and also was at a good price.

2-0 out of 5 stars Confusing

I needed to know how to navigate Stickies but this book doesn't list Stickies in the Index.I found it in Notes....

Next, it said nothing about how to navigate Stickes, so I'm still using the 'up' and 'down' button and it takes forever to get anywhere in the Sticky.

Next, the book says to click the X in the upper left-hand corner to Delete it.Delete it?That doesn't delete it, it just closes it out, but that instruction will keep new users from ever using the X to merely close their Sticky.

Next, some of the tips start by telling you what to click, then somewhere in there you may find the purpose of what you're doing, which should have appeared at the beginning.....Disorganization....

This the first Dummies book I've bought that I really don't like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mac OS X snow leopard
The beginning chapters share several hints about the product that is very helpful. I haven't had very much time to read this book, but from what I have read I have enjoyed and use the tips. ... Read more

Product Description
Sure, you were happy when the first Mac OS X-compatible version of Word arrived (after all, it's the one software program you can't live without). But this is the version you've really been waiting for. In contrast to Word for Mac OS X-which gelled nicely with the new OS but didn't offer much compelling additional functionality-Word 2004 offers a slew of usability improvements. To start taking advantage of them immediately, you need this task-based guide from popular Mac teacher Maria Langer! Using simple step-by-step instructions, loads of visual aids, and plenty of well-placed tips, Maria gets you up and running fast on the basics before moving on to cover more advanced techniques (formatting, inserting objects, creating outlines, and more). If you're a veteran user, you can go directly to the new material (for example, learning how to record audio notes and link them to your Word docs). And if you're a beginner, you'll appreciate the thorough coverage of all the most common Word tasks. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Hard to read
I find the print quality very poor, especially for the example figures. Some of the print is so small and blurred
that I can't even read it with a magnifying glass.Otherwise the overall general text is pretty good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Word 2004 for Mac OS X
I use this program because it is ubiquitous. But that is the only reason. There are programs now beginning to be available that are somewhat interchangeable with Microsoft Word, and it will be a blessing then I can get away from Word. It was a pioneer and therefore seemed great. But now we have much more sophisticated and user friendly choices beginning to come on the market

2-0 out of 5 stars OK for beginners, but
I was looking for a reference for Word 2004 that I could use to solve problems while I use Word.I am an experienced user and was hoping for something that would give me tips and insights into issues like how to work with anchors so that figures get positioned where I want them, and then stay there.Ms Langer's book is an introduction to using Word and is pretty much the same information you'll get from the online help. I've found it to be of little use for the issues I'm trying to address.

4-0 out of 5 stars For the beginner a great start
Like all of the Visual Quickstart Guides, this book is peppered with hundreds of screen shots and tips. This easily accessible, step-by-step guide will take you from absolute beginner to being able to use Word very well. The book does not cover the advanced techniques available in Word, but does show you how to use the vast majority of functions and menu options. At the end of the book, you will be able to create just about any document you could think of, even if it is not always done in the most elegant way available in Word - that is to say not using the elegance of the advanced functionality of Word. But in all fairness, this book does not present itself as an advanced tutorial, but as a beginner/intermediate book and in this it does deliver every thing it promises.

The step-by-step instructions are easy to follow and are nicely supplemented by the related screenshots. My one complaint is that there are several occasions in this book where, either because of space constraints, or because the topics broach the territory of advance techniques, or because she wishes you to learn by experimentation, the author will discuss a topic only to tell the reader to experiement with the different option buttons. While this is my one complaint, I did not find this too onerous, since this is how I learned Word in the first place. But for the newbie or faint hearted (when it comes to pressing unknown buttons on a computer) it can be a little daunting. Despite this minor issue the book is a great way to learn to use Word on the Mac and for the newbie or fainthearted, do experiment on practice documents before trying a technique on an important document.

While I have used Word for many years and know many advanced techniques of the application, I am happy to say that I did learn several tidbits that I did not know before. I highly recommend this book.

Editorial Review

Product Description

Many systems administrators on the Mac need a way to manage machine configuration after initial setup and deployment. Apple’s Managed Preferences system (also known as MCX) is under-documented, often misunderstood, and sometimes outright unknown by sys admins. MCX is usually deployed in conjunction with an OS X server, but it can also be used in Windows environments or where no dedicated server exists at all.

Enterprise Mac Managed Preferences is the definitive guide to Apple’s Managed Client technology. With this book, you’ll get the following:

  • An example-driven guide to Mac OS X Managed Preferences/Client technology
  • Recipes for common use case studies and patterns
  • A targeted approach appropriate for any sys admin that manages Macs in an OS X or Windows environment

This is the only book that focuses on this facet of OS X exclusively. If you’re a sys admin, this book will take away much of the pain of working with OS X client systems. Even better, both of the authors are very involved in the Mac community—Greg Neagle is part of the MacEnterprise steering committee, and Ed is the Executive Editor and an author for MacTech magazine and a member of the Apple Consultants Network.

What you’ll learn

  • The Managed Preferences system and how to manage it
  • All about Directory Services Local Directory Services
  • How to work with property list files
  • How to deliver files with Open Directory, ActiveDirectory, local scripts, third-party utilities, Puppet, LANRev, Casper, and more
  • How to work with compositing preferences, including the hierarchy of preferences
  • How to write a Plist for management, using Workgroup Manager and Dock Example
  • How and when to enforce Managed Preferences
  • How to understand manifests
  • What recipes to use and when
  • When, how, and where to use mcxquery, System Profiler, and MCX Cache flushing

5-0 out of 5 stars Tour De Force
Having seen presentations by each author on the topic helped highlight some of the concepts behind the book, but I wasn't prepared for how eminently readable this was.Taking each moving part of how the Mac is customized/managed in turn, Mr. Maczak and Mr. Neagle take us right up to the minute with (obviously well-rehearsed) best practices that remove headaches from an administrators job, including Active Directory integration practically handed on a platter.Common recipes are detailed, and the cutting-edge (yet flexible) "Local MCX in a custom (non-default) node" method is discussed to boot.
Many technical books feel like they are all talk and lofty theory, with heavy labor needed to get practical use out of what's written.By explaining the why's behind what to do, and taking GUI-based and bash tools alongside python and automation techniques, this book is very accessible, whether you're a novice or a seasoned pro.Highly recommended for anyone hoping to deliver an enterprise-grade computing experience to Mac users. ...
