5-0 out of 5 stars Useful, well-organized, succinct
As part of my educational requirements, I was required to write a literature review. While I understood what that meant, the nuts and bolts of doing so was overwhelming to me. Thankfully, I found this title on Amazon. I found this book to be incredibly useful in writing my literature review. What seemed to be the most important factor was that this book lays out a step-by-step plan in writing the review, and what exactly must be done. Additionally, the book de-mystifies the idiosyncrasies of writing style when writing one of these. I firmly think that if I had not found this title, I would have had a much more difficult time writing my review. Highly recommended!

Product Description

Smart object technology, sometimes called the Internet of Things, is having a profound impact on our day-to-day lives. Interconnecting Smart Objects with IP is the first book that takes a holistic approach to the revolutionary area of IP-based smart objects. Smart objects are the intersection of networked embedded systems, wireless sensor networks, ubiquitous and pervasive computing, mobile telephony and telemetry, and mobile computer networking. This book consists of three parts, Part I focuses on the architecture of smart objects networking, Part II covers the hardware, software, and protocols for smart objects, and Part III provides case studies on how and where smart objects are being used today and in the future. The book covers the fundamentals of IP communication for smart objects, IPv6, and web services, as well as several newly specified low-power IP standards such as the IETF 6LoWPAN adaptation layer and the RPL routing protocol. This book contains essential information not only for the technical reader but also for policy makers and decision makers in the area of smart objects both for private IP networks and the Internet.

  • Shows in detail how connecting smart objects impacts our lives with practical implementation examples and case studies

  • Provides an in depth understanding of the technological and architectural aspects underlying smart objects technology

  • Offers an in-depth examination of relevant IP protocols to build large scale smart object networks in support of a myriad of new services

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on understanding what the Internet of Things really is
I wrote a lengthy review about this book on my website which I'm reprinting here. I cover wireless sensor networks and have watched it grow from being a glimmer in people's eyes to where they're becoming extensions of the internet. The area is currently difficult to navigate with a lot of work going on from disparate groups. Hence, this book is exactly what is needed to figure out what's really going on. Here's the review...

Akiba
FreakLabs

The Internet of Things is a buzzword that's generating quite a bit of hype at the moment. I'm seeing it all over the place to describe all types of disparate things but mostly being used as a marketing term. I suspect that the majority of the people that use the term don't fully understand its meaning or how it will be implemented/used. That's why I was very pleasantly surprised when I picked up the book "Interconnecting Smart Objects with IP" by Adam Dunkels (author of the ContikiOS, uIP, lwIP, and general programming extraordinaire) and JP Vasseur (distinguished engineer at Cisco, co-chair of IETF's ROLL working group, and one of the chairs for IPSO).

I don't really know JP Vasseur, but I've been an admirer of Adam Dunkel's work since I started in wireless sensor networks. In my mind, ContikiOS is one of the best operating systems/environments ever designed for wireless sensor networks, or what I like to call, "engineering hell". But that's a different story.

Before I get into what I thought of the book, I think it might be appropriate to give a bit of background on why I'm writing this post. In my opinion, the internet is basically a set of standards that everyone agrees to abide by. That standardization is what allows manufacturers and users to adopt the technology with confidence, knowing that they won't be the only ones or part of a minority of people using it. That also inspires confidence that time spent learning the technology and standards, how to use it, and developing applications for it won't be wasted. I think this is the reason why the internet became so popular within the last however many years/decades.

So when I hear the Internet of Things being thrown around nonchalantly by press releases, marketing people, or just in general, I tend to wince a little bit. There's a misunderstanding that anything that can connect to the internet, i.e. speaks TCP/IP and has a communications interface, forms the Internet of Things. The problem is that they're missing the whole part about standardization which is why the Internet of Things doesn't exist yet. There are still many areas that need to be standardized such as using UDP vs TCP, how security will be implemented (did you know that there is no standardized equivalent to SSL for embedded devices?), how device services will be discovered, how data will be exchanged, what types of device profiles will exist, how web services will be implemented, etc. Actually, all of this and more is being discussed and hammered out right now in the IETF working groups. Check out the 6LoWPAN , ROLL , and CoRE groups if you're interested.

Without the standardization, then what you have are technology islands, archipelagos of data formats, protocols, and other silly things. It's basically what you see in the wireless sensor network protocol space right now with Zigbee, 6LoWPAN, Z-Wave, Bluetooth Low Energy, Active RFID, ISA100, Wireless HART, and a host of other communications protocols. It was the same way back in the wired networking wars with Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI, LocalTalk and a host of other communications protocols. The internet as we know it couldn't exist until everyone standardized on ethernet, TCP/IP, RIP/OSPF, SSL, HTTP, HTML, and a few others that I'm leaving out. That basically takes you up the chain from communications medium, communications protocol, networking protocol, routing implementation, security, and application data exchange. From there, applications like web browsers started popping up and further standardization on data exchange such as formatting, display, and APIs occurred. That's when things started to really take off and the technology islands turned into one big-ass continent we know as the internet. But today's internet is mostly designed to be accessed via browsers or GUIs, usually with a person on at least one end, which narrows the application domain.

Now when you start getting into embedded devices accessing the internet and communicating with each other, things get more complicated. Unlike a browser which has a well known/understood profile, each device will support a different set of services, like turning on and off a light, sending a data stream from a sensor, or turning a servo 30.3 degrees. Those devices will need to know what other devices to talk to (service discovery). They'll need to exchange data in a common format, like specifying the sensor data is floating point, 32-bit integer, or an ASCII string. The data exchange will need to happen securely so that some other device can't spoof the real one and mess up the data readings. And there needs to be some type of web service so that the device can be accessed or access another remote device. And this is just at the application layer.

Well, that was a bit of a wordy introduction to my review of Interconnecting Smart Objects with IP, but I wanted to make sure people knew why a book like this needs to exist. The Internet of Things isn't as simple as slapping a TCP/IP stack on to an object. There is a lot of standardization that needs to occur before such a large transformation can happen on the Internet. All of these standardization processes are in progress or finished and can be found on the internet (ironic), mostly via IETF RFCs. However if you have ever read an RFC or a standards document, you'll know that it's as much fun as reading the fine print on your credit card agreement. What Adam and JP have done with their book is took all of those standards documents, boiled them down to their main points, and presented them in a very readable and interesting way with examples and illustrations. They also discuss competing technologies, such as Wi-Fi vs 802.15.4, binary XML vs JSON, REST vs SOAP, etc. And that's just the first section of the book. That alone would have been reason enough for me to pick the book up.

However in the middle section of the book, they go into the actual technology implementation, and although it's more technical, they give very concrete explanations of each of the technologies. They go in-depth from the communications media (802.11, 802.15.4, 802.3), networking protocol (IPv6 and 6LoWPAN), routing (RPL), application protocol (TCP/UDP), and then give a survey of other competing technologies (Zigbee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth, etc). Incidentally, I helped out on the Zigbee part of the book. Just thought you should know...uhhh...a very minor contribution...*sigh*

And finally, the last section of the book talks about how all of this fits into different application areas. They discuss the smart grid, industrial automation, home automation, building automation, health monitoring, and more.

Basically, this book is an impressive piece of work, and the first section alone is worth the price in time saved sifting through standards documents. This is probably the only book that can give a complete and concrete picture of what the real Internet of Things will be. There are very few people I know, quite possibly none, that can discuss this topic from the communications physical layer to the web services so I know that anyone interested in what the Internet of Things actually is will learn something from this book. I certainly did. But most important, it will allow anyone that mentions the term Internet of Things to actually know what they're talking about.

4-0 out of 5 stars A little dry, but insightful
This book really scores its points when it gets AWAY from the dry IP address schemes, and into how devices can be used in cities of the future.
Like "Parking lots". Who wouldn't want to know where the empty spot is in a lot without having to drive around like a crazy person?
Also, practical GPS and health monitoring of blood pressure, and other medical stats, to integrate that info, with friends, neighbors and care givers. All of this is on the cusp of happening, and to better understand it, this book can help.A little dry at many times, but still insightful for many.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Underlying Technology of Ubiquitous Computing & The Internet of Things
This guidebook provides an excellent overview and a fair amount of architectural detail of the underlying IPv6 Technologies that will make Ubiquitous Computing and the "Internet of Things" possible. With an approbation by Vint Cerf the TCP/IP and Internet Pioneer it introduces a mature technical discussion of the technologies that will make Internetworked Intelligent Objects a reality. It provides a good balance between technical architecture and a review of the issues that this technology will introduce in public policy.A variety of applications for this IPv6 Internet of Things is given including Smart Grid, Metering, and Smart Building Technologies.Since this is the first Ubiquitous Computing review that focuses on the IP-Internetworking architecture I would have looked forward to greater detail painting the applications environment in terms of the underlying implementation architecture. For example, I could see a useful chapter on Medical Internetworking, Biophysical Sensors and the Networking/Privacy/HIPAA Compliance Issues as they are affected by Internetwork technologies.

But, this is an excellent most important work on Internetworking and the IPv6 technologies that will underly much that has been written about Ubiquitous Computing and "The Internet of Things". I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Plans of studies at the universities
It is a book very interesting objects. I believe that in the curriculum of Universities should be included this item , for preparing students for the future.
In a future research on the networks be designed with the objects IP

4-0 out of 5 stars Today's Version of Martin Waldseemüller's 1507Map of the New World
Just as Waldseemüller's 1507 map of the New World set in motion the naming of America, Vasseur and Dunkels help today's engineers, computer scientists and students explore the world of tomorrow. The new IPv6 protocol for access to the Internet of things, like our washing machines, provides for 340 trillion trillion trillion addresses. No, I didn't write the word "trillion" by mistake three times.

In a future world of ubiquitous embedded computers, the authors provide us the context of history, outline issues such as interoperability so that our toys play well together and begin the basic outline of how to build the networks of the future. What are the smart objects? What hardware, software and protocols are needed? Those are some of the topics covered. The book also features case studies, which tell more complete compelling stories.

The book should and, more importantly, CAN be read by technicians and policy makers alike... being as readable as it is. My favorite section was on the 6LoWPAN adaptation layer... for handling packet fragmentation and reassembly. Who would have guessed optimization of transport could be laid out so elegantly? Don't try interconnecting smart objects at home without this path breaking guide. Whether your designing water-quality monitoring systems (i.e., pH, chlorine, turbidity, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, etc.) or designing routing metrics for smart object networks, this is the book for you. ... If only I had known about this gem of a book sooner! The Dictionary of Computer and Internet Terms FINALLY gives me somewhere to turn
when I run into one of those words so frequently found in Computerese, the name that I use for the language of Computers.

Prior to finding this book, I spent countless hours trying to find out what a specific term or word meant.Suddenly...FTP instead of
saying something to me like "F indT his P uppy" magically became "F ile T ransfer P rotocol" in two blinks of an eye! Then, even
greater wonder of wonders....the Dictionary proceeds to explain what it is and how it is applied in everyday Computer Use!

There are over 500 fact packed pages in this Dictionary, making it the Rosetta Stone of Computerese! If you plan to continue to

4-0 out of 5 stars a solid worth while source book
This is the latest in the Barron's Business Guide on Computer and Internet terms. It is up to date has has over 3200 key terms made easier to understand by diagram, pictures or examples (as in programming). There are some terms not covered for some reason such as the types of networks, only a generic reference that if you were looking up networks you would know anyway. I hope they correct this over-sight and add more network terms but otherwise a very useful and helpful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm faithful to this likewise faithful companion.
First off, I hope people see my review and that Amazon does something about the reviews connected to this publication. You will notice a couple reviews after mine that are recent enough, but most are from what I saw as far back as 1999 and more. This edition was released in April of 2009, and those reviews are complaining about omissions and typos. This most likely due to it previously smaller size.I have no idea. But I have never had a problem of accuracy with this series, however, it would be totally forgivable and acceptable with the plethora of information provided here.

I have been using computers in some capacity for over 20 years, and been online since the 90's. I got a job at the offices of the first Cybercafe which became a chain, so I all of a sudden needed to know everything about the internet. Luckily at time, not many knew about it at all. And the thorn of the internet's side, called AOL, was an unknown entity. But, AOL and all other types of providers sprung up rapidly all around us, and be it freezing Macs or PCs crashing with Windows 3, I had a lot to learn. Entered bookstore.Bought a ton of books. And have used only THIS one ever since. At that time, it was more like a little booklet to refer to in my pocket when I screwed something up etc.

Through the years, everything grew, including the content of this little book. It's still small at about 6" x 4", but this edition had to grow a bit more than the others since everyone and their grandmother is online now. It's very convenient, Easy to find quick info and refresh your memory etc.

I don't do books.Never have the patience.I learn by doing and referencing.I should mention that I left that office in the mid 90's and became self employed as a Webmaster, Designer, and grew in many computer type areas.I now focus on internet marketing and software, and still maintain many web sites.Did this little thing teach me?... of course not. But, it is a great backup for a short concise answer relating to anything connected to your computer. It's a great deal even at the list price. When a new edition comes out, I simply pass it down to a friend. The geek in me also fills stockings with them as it curbs the tech support calls from family members a bit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just keeps getting better
I started buying Barron's Dictionary of Computer and Internet Terms back in the 1990's when I just just learning about the internet. It was much thinner then but still a valuable resource. Now in their 10th edition it is still a must have.I have it within arms length at my workstation at all times.Since I've bought it there is only one obscure term that I did not find a reference to but that was a term particular to an individual program. Can't fault them for that. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not a great read, but some basic information is there
This is a good book for a beginner. The history of Internet marketing is there and it is clearly written for a non-techie. However, I believe it is translated poorly or written by someone who does not have a great command of English. Disappointing in that regard.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend!
Excellent, methodical, easy to understand, comprehensive book! I am recommending this book to my entrepreneur students and anyone else interested in learning about internet marketing. I think this is the best book out there on the topic! Miguel if you see this - > I would love to see a power point and/or video presentation available through youtube for promotion to students.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good plan for internet marketing!
My disclaimer: As with any opinion, it is only my opinion! And everyone's will vary depending on who reads the book and what the reader is looking for. I look for ways to improve businesses, sales, and my life. This book shares a plan to better market whatever you want to sell on the internet

On a 1 to 5 scale, 5 being the best:

Readability4: Not the easiest book to read, but the information was relevant and helpful. It will take a little time to get through this, but this is a reference book to help guide a person through the process of marketing on the web.

Information and new ideas 5: Maybe the ideas aren't going to be new for everybody, but to someone like me, who is just starting to use the web to market, it has been very helpful. The only caution I have is that the way sites are ranked on the web, changes and will keep on changing. The book and its information will need to be updated every other year. Even the book indicates this.

Applicable Ideas 5: As I stated, plenty of good ideas.

Value 5: Very useful and a great value for the dollar.

Overall Score 5: A good understandable reference for expanding one's presence on the web.

Great job Miguel Todaro!

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor writing
In all fairness the content of the book is good. However, I agree with the gentleman who also commented on the writing quality of the book: it is very poor. Throughout the book the reader will come across writing errors which are always very disturbing and some other times just do not allow for proper comprehension of what the author is trying to communicate.
I would barely recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very unclear writing
While the content is very good, the writing is poor. On every page I encounter sentences that are poorly strucutred and vague, so I cannot extract the full meaning. The author owes it to the buyer and reader to get an editor who can fix these problems before marketing a book. I would not recommend this book. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review
Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) does exactly what its name implies--it routes traffic efficiently from its origin on one network to its destination on another. Most typically, it's the protocol that provides a private network with Internet connectivity. Internet Routing Architectures is an authoritative text on BGP in theory and practice, covering everything from good design of BGP-based internetworks to actual implementation of those internetworks on Cisco Systems routers. This second edition includes more information than its predecessor on BGP-4; other improvements are updates rather than major additions or revisions. You will appreciate having this book on hand if your job has to do with optimizing traffic under BGP, or if you're preparing for one of the Cisco certification exams.

Sam Halabi--a respected authority on Cisco routers--discusses addressing schemes and the ways in which routing protocols operate within those schemes. The general information serves mainly to set the stage for BGP, which Halabi explains lucidly in theory before getting into design issues and, finally, implementation via router configuration. The book presents practical situations ("Multihoming to a Single Provider," for example, which is subsequently broken down into sub-scenarios about how the multiple connections are used) and steps through the design decisions associated with them. It's also big on diagrams and uses one on nearly every other page to drive home points. The result: this book earns its cover price as a tutorial and as a reference. --David Wall

Topics covered: Means of connecting one network to another, especially by means of Border Gateway Protocol 4 (BGP-4) on Cisco Systems routers. There's coverage of addressing and routing-protocol generalities, as well as of BGP tuning for routing inside and outside autonomous systems. Design decisions are a big part of this book's scope. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars the bgp 'bible', even for non believers :-)
This book has been reviewed many many times before, and because it is such a brilliant masterpiece, it thought it was worth while mentioning this again.
I simply don't have words for this book.Everything is so well explained, well documented, well written... it simply is a must read for anybody who wants to do anything with BGP.
Personally, I have found it valuable to first learn some basics about BGP before reading this book. But even if you are a BGP beginner, you will like this book.

High five, well deserved !

4-0 out of 5 stars A must read on BGP
This is a great book to get the fundamentals of BGP and many advanced concepts related to BGP on the internet and in your enterprise. Even though Halabi wrote the latest edition almost 10 years ago the information is very relative to today. It is of course very Cisco specific but gives you a great understanding of how the protocol works and will help any engineer who deals with BGP. A must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Internet Routing Architectures Book
Very satisfied. The description of the condition of the book said it was like a new book. I wasn't disappointed. It was in excellent condition. The seller was very good and actually followed up with me to make sure that I was happy and totally satisfied with the book and delivery. I was.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic BGP and Internet Architecture
This is a really great book on BGP and Internet Architecture. The explanation of BGP at the protocol level is great.More importantly though is its explanation and examples of using eBGP / iBGP with an IGP.

I've heard it criticized as being dated and too Cisco specific.Though it is Cisco specific, it's still very relevant.I would start with this book and read past NANOG presentations on introductory BGP if I wanted to learn how the Internet works.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great BGP book, but not the first book for the CCIE
I have always felt that I am part of the small minority that just does not see the beauty of this book if studying for the CCIE.I have, for years, read other's comments on the how Halabi's "Internet Routing Arch" is a `must have', yet I still have not found a similar reason why. While I do feel that the book does (probably) the best job at explaining BGP and how to implement BGP in a Cisco-centric world, I have not discovered the value for the CCIE.I would much rather spend my time with CiscoPress's "Routing TCP/IP" Volume 2, by Jeff Doyle and Jennifer DeHaven Carroll than this book.

One item of concern, there is a noticable amount of trivial errors in this book that can lead to disaster if implemented incorrectly. For example:

Page 106 - "...any traffic that has an origin OR destination that does not belong to the local AS."This clearly should be an AND, not OR.

Page 315 - "You can also specify a PREFIX list..." - I believe this should be a filter list, not a prefix list.

And then there are places where the book is too opinionated - for example - page 206 "Many operators choose to filter dynamically learned defaults to avoid situations in which traffic ends up where it is not supposed to be."I do not feel this is true, and can think of multiple times when not filtering the advertised default route may just end up being the worst option. In fact, I do not feel either configuration is the right configuration to admit or condone, as the wrong configuration can have disastrous effects.

I still have to give this book 4 stars - simply because of it's utilitarian value and overwhelming sense of loyalty given to this book by others. But I don't reach for this book too often.

I give this book 4 pings out of 5:

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the old version!
This was the first poker book I read and I give it a lot of credit for my success. It is an excellent foundation for any player. There is a new version of the book out, however, and I would recommend getting it instead. The new version, called Internet Texas Hold'em: Winning Strategies for Full-Ring and Short-Handed Games is basically the same book but is updated to reflect different game types. The short handed strategies in the expanded version are a must for anyone who plays a lot of 6-max.

4-0 out of 5 stars helped
Bought for gift and she was very pleased with all the help it gave her, at the gambling tables.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good information
The book has a lot of helpful information for an aspiring poker player.Just be warned that this book is for "limit" hold'em and not "no limit."

4-0 out of 5 stars Rich source of concrete tactics and advice
Hilger's book, though a bit older now, still offers a rich source of concrete tactics and advice for playing online Texas Hold'em. For new players it provides a sensible basic strategy.

Each chapter approaches a specific aspect, or situation, of the game. For example, "Probability and odds" covers the basics of probability and "Two Pair" explains what should be done when the flop matches both hole cards.

Unlike many other books, Hilger's material is an applied, clear approach. Rather than speaking of abstract topics and generalities he provides actual situations with specific action plans. For newcomers this may be a significant benefit.

Ensuring a good understanding of what was just written, Hilger provides small tests at the ends of the chapters. These present real poker playing situations and require choosing the next action. The correct answer derives from content contained in the preceding chapter.

Answers are presented along with a clear explanation of why it is the correct choice. The correct choice of course according to the strategies as described in the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Solid Book - Great Starting Hand Chart
I try to pick up something new from each poker book I read.As I am a new student to the game, I have found the starting hand chart found in this book to be extremely helpful. The chart lays out what hands you should play from what positions, and under what conditions (unraised/raised pot).

But beyond this chart I have to agree with Bartman_9 in that internet poker is pretty much live poker without tells. There were a few pages of specific internet related material and internet tips here and there but not much at all.If you want to play serious online poker and you are somewhat of a beginner, then this book would be a good cold call, however don't expect it to impart an online silver bullet. You can't go wrong with this book, 3 stars. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good place to start for CSET review
I bought this book because it was recommended as a good resource for studying for the CSET science series. Since it has been a while since I've been in school, I found that this book was a good starting place to get an idea if I had a handle on a subject. I didn't use te book's internet resources at ll, but he articles give a decent, very road overview of a huge amount of subject area. From there I went online or to other college texts when I needed more info. Worth he money if you're looking for a pretty general science reference text. Oh, and I passed my CSETs!

3-0 out of 5 stars Thanks!
The condition of the book was described acurately in the description. Thanks for prompt shipment. :)

Product Description
It's official: There is no longer a stigma associated with Internet dating. It's true. We promise. Nearly 50 million Americans have tried it. That means roughly half of the single adult population has filled out an online dating profile or has at least browsed a few personal ads, just to see who's out there.Quickly disappearing are the days of awkward setups and random encounters. Today's singles simply post a profile on a handful of dating websites, then sit back and wait for the dates to roll in. Well, that's the idea anyway. The reality is that most people slap together vague and uninspired dating profiles and quickly become disillusioned when "the one" doesn't respond the next day.In I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M BUYING THIS BOOK, Internet dating expert Evan Marc Katz, a former MatchNet consultant and avowed online dater, demystifies the world of Internet dating. He offers practical advice on choosing the right dating website, writing eye-catching profiles, striking up that first email "conversation," turning a first date into a second, and much more. Equal parts how-to guide and inspirational pep talk, I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M BUYING THIS BOOK is like having a chat with a good friend, in this case, a hysterically funny, insightful friend who tells it like it is while remaining cheerfully optimistic about the universal quest for love. Whether you're an online dating junkie or a complete newcomer, an enthusiastic twentysomething or a been-there-done-that divorcée, this irreverent and intelligent guide will teach even the most jaded single how to master the dating game and find true love online. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars There's already many online dating books...
... which makes it hard for me to rate this one more than an average 3-star.The problem is all books about online dating offer the same advice. When internet dating was new 10 years ago, a book such as this would have been helpful!

If you are a newbie to internet dating, I recommend this book!

However, if you have been dating online for a year or two, it seems the advice offered in the book are basic common sense suggestions - be honest, post a good photo, write a good positive profile!

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Perspective with secrets for a strong profile
I'd never thought I meet someone from an internet dating site. Yes, like anything it else, it takes time. I enjoyed reading this book.
Katz does a good job explaining how to write a polished profile without writing a novel. Opposed to general statements, this provides insight for someone to become familiar with you.
If someone on a site sends you a response, Evan provides excellent suggestions on how to respond.
Since you are both strangers, Katz describes where to go & what to do on a first date.
Also, he provides warning signs pertaining stalkers, & scams.
Furthermore, Katz mentions actions your date may do that aren't meant to offend U.

4-0 out of 5 stars Guidance for Newbies
Katz is a consultant for online daters, so this book is a come-on that probably gets him additional consulting business. This is a short, readable guide for people new to online dating. It is particularly good in comparing the features of the leading online dating services and in consistently advocating for honesty in what you say in profiles.Less helpful is a chapter of five profiles he has helped write which is supposed to show you how to do a better profile but actually ends up encouraging you to seek Katz's consulting help. The book has much helpful information, but for a better introduction to online dating for beginners I would recommend Online Dating for Dummies.

Gordon Scott Edwards, author of Internet Safari,Finding Love Online At 65

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read, Good information, Funny and Entertaning
I disagree with the negative comments some others wrote about this book. Judging from what I see on the dating sites, a lot of people are going about this wrong. So, it is not outdated nor is it simple common sense that every one already knows. Instead it has relevant and useful tips on making your profile stand out. Your communications will be more effective and your online dating experience will be better overall. Lastly, he writes about all this with a great sense of humor.

1-0 out of 5 stars The first part of the title is right
If you buy this book, you may very well end up hitting yourself over the head with something near at hand (probably the book itself) and exclaiming "I can't believe I bought this book!"Luckily, the worthless book in question is also mercifully brief and bound in paper, so hopefully you will do no more than emotional damage to your psyche. That's about the only positive thing you will be able to say about the experience of either reading or hitting yourself over the head with this book. The written contents are a mix of the amazingly obvious and the horribly shallow and sexist.A good book on organic gardening is more likely to help you attract a romantic partner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
Contrary to other review, this book is very good.

It has 10 chapters, covering every buzzword you need
to know about the technology of Internet.

Most people treated Internet as a tool. All they do
is to use Google and Facebook. This book tells you
a lot more than that.

I recommend this book to all professors and students.

The book will be better if more real-life applications
can be covered.

1-0 out of 5 stars Garbage, like the entire series
This book, like everything else in the "New Perspective" series, is utter garbage. You don't actually learn anything from it that's useful. You'll learn how to click buttons, but you will not gain an actual understanding of the subject. It's riddled with mistakes, out-of-date information and the changes from edition to edition are very minor and irrelevant to the actual subject, instead they're merely re-arranged homework assignments. The only reason anybody would buy this book is when it's required for a college course. Why anybody thinks this is college-level material, I do not know. You'd be better off with one of the "...for dummies" books if all you need is a feeble grasp on the topic. If you must purchase this book, don't pay full retail on it; it can be had for a minor fraction of the retail price all day long. ... Read more

Product Description
Praise for the first edition of Multiple Streams of Internet Income

"If ever the world needed some help to succeed on the Internet, this is the moment. Robert Allen's new book is just in time to save the day."
—Jack Trout, President, Trout & Partners, Ltd.author of Differentiate or Die

"Earning money . . . serious money, is no different than piloting a jet aircraft or baking an apple pie. You have to learn how and you must understand what you're doing. Robert Allen is a master flight instructor if you want your income to soar. He knows what ninety-eight percent of our population have proven they don't know. Read this book and follow his advice. In a relatively short period of time, you will become wealthy and be amazed at how much free time you have when you never have to worry about money."
—Bob Proctor, author of the bestseller You Were Born Rich

"The only thing better than the promise in the title of Robert Allen's wonderful Multiple Streams of Internet Income is the enlightening information in the book itself. And the only thing better than the book is the life a reader can lead after reading the book and taking the actions that are suggested. Of all the books I've read about earning money online, this one tops the list for a multiple stream of reasons."
—Jay Conrad Levinson, author of the Guerrilla Marketing series

"Robert Allen has done it again! Multiple Streams of Internet Income is an exciting look into the many creative things you can do with your money in today's new economy. I can't wait to use its wisdom!"
—Ken Blanchard, coauthor of The One Minute Manager® and Big Bucks!

"Information is less expensive to manufacture, promote, and ship than hard products such as running shoes and CDs. Robert Allen shares how you can apply Internet technology to selling information: books, reports, articles, seminars, speeches, and consulting. There are a lot of fluff books on e-commerce. This one is detailed, accurate, and readable. Multiple Streams of Internet Income is not just a book, it's a complete and hands-on course in advanced commerce. Congratulations."

1-0 out of 5 stars Proceed with Caution
Be very careful how you follow up with some of the information presented in this book.Don't assume that just because a marketing guru is mentioned in this book, that it is completely safe to do business with him or her.Use Google and read in-depth comments about each one before you decide to proceed to their web site.

For example, when I Googled the marketing gurus quoted in this book, for six of them (as well as the author) when I entered their first and last names, the third word that Google autotyped following the name was "scam."Reading comments for one individual in particular revealed many complaints that he was verbally abusive to prospects when they declined to buy.Not good.

In addition, other reviewers who signed up for the author's newsletter have found themselves inundated with spam.I did not personally sign up for the author's newsletter, but signed up for one distributed by another of the gurus cited in the book.I am now receiving over 140 spam e-mails a day and may be forced to abandon an e-mail address that I've used for 15 years.

I'm also receiving exactly the same kind of spam e-mails that other reviewers have reported receiving after signing up for the author's mailings.Rest assured that these people are swapping their mailing lists. On page 161 of the book, Bob Gatchel (who wrote that section) says, "I discovered yet another way to make money with my database--I found other people on the Internet with whom to joint-venture and swap leads. If I had 1,000 leads who showed interest in my products in the past and my new partner had a comparable product, we agreed to an even exchange of leads and marketed our respective affiliate programs to those new people.I also sold my older leads lists to other marketers."

So, be aware that when you sign up for one of these guru's mailings or products, your contact information may be shared with many others without your permission.

Some of the people cited in this book might be reputable. The problem is, you may not know which ones aren't until it's too late.Do your homework and proceed with caution...

5-0 out of 5 stars A bit outdated
There is lots of good solid and useable infomation in the book. There are a few outdated things, but that is to be expected with anything dealing with the internet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Being "Realistic" Is Why Average People Don't Make Big Money
I had to chime in with my own review because, after reading several comments about it not being "realistic" for the average person to generate as much wealth as the author, is preposterous. The author never promises that his techniques will be "easy." He does promise, however, that it can be done. The average person can make a million dollars in passive income using multiple streams of income. It's all about your attitude and your system of thinking, not so much whether or not Robert Allen's specific techniques for the Internet work for you. So what if they are a little outdated? That's not the point. There IS a system that works today and thousands of people have figured out. He's just saying that he did it and so can you. And he can do it again. And so can you. But you have to think big and let go of your limiting beliefs. He warns you to use good judgment when taking risks, but the people who face their fears and take the biggest risks get the biggest payoff. That is a statistical fact. You can read more about that in The Millionaire Mind by Thomas Stanley. Some people who take big risks fail the first time. But it's the people who see it as a temporary setback, learn from their mistakes, and try again are the ones that eventually succeed and become wealthy. You have to work hard and believe in yourself!

5-0 out of 5 stars Multiple Streams of Internet Income. How Ordinary People Make Extraordinary Money Online
The book was excellent and gave me several very exciting ways to make money in this economy.I also received it in a very timely manner in excellent condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome resource for Online Marketers
Mitch Meyerson has done it again. This book has simple to follow, easy to implement online marketing straegies for anyone looking to develop and implement a low cost, high impact online marketing plan.
Highly recommend this book!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth your time or money
I bought this book for my on-line marketing course (graduate level) and I found this book to be a complete disappointment. The book is not targeted at people who have a basic knowledge of marketing in general. Even if you have no knowledge in this field, purchase a different book. The information in this book is so basic, repetitive, and dumbed down that it is difficult to take seriously.

It is apparent from the very beginning that as a reader you are being marketed to. This becomes annoying and I lost my trust in the authors because of this. Not to mention I didn't think the examples of excellent on-line marketing tactics were very good at all. For everyone who wants expert examples that are amazing, this is not the book for you.

The book is also poorly edited. The mistakes are all over the place and I would love to recommend a copyeditor to the authors. It is hard to take a book seriously when there are typos and out right errors throughout the book.

The repetitive language is highly redundant. You will read the same thing over and over and wonder if you've some how lost your place in the book. It is clear that the authors do not have high expectations for their audience; they repeat basic ideas continuously and use overly simplified language. The simplicity of the language doesn't allow the authors to clearly explain what crucial internet/computer components are, what they do, and why they are important for marketing.

The information in the book is already dated. I would recommend finding a book that has more up to date information, the authors of this book are mourning the addition of pop up blockers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful and positive
Internet Dating is Not Like Ordering a Pizza is geared toward those folks who have been unsuccessful with computer dating.

Cherie takes us through the steps to write a terrific profile with a positive approach. A few pointers mentioned are: Don't to talk about what you do. Your hoping to meet someone, not seeking a job. Don't say "I'm just your average Joe or gal". Folks want to know the real you so don't disqualify yourself.

Coffee dates are for when you want to meet that person finally face-to-face. It's the time you want to utilize to decide if you want to go on a real date. Cherie discusses a few rules you should know to hopefully make it a success. For example, public places are a must. The length of the meeting and how and who should pay is also a few topics touched on.

Safety, be yourself, and be positive are key elements in this helpful book. Cherie herself met her husband through internet dating. I've seen the results myself. A few good friends and members of my family have had success with internet dating. It works! There is that perfect someone out there for you and Cherie Burbach helps you utilize the online tools available to you to help you with your success. Internet Dating is not like Ordering a Pizza is very upbeat and easy to read. A great addition to your self-help section of your bookshelf. I'm already married and after reading this book, I felt good about myself. Imagine the possibilities for those single folks looking for their special someone using computer dating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool for Those Desire Greater Success with Online Dating
I would never consider myself to be someone who quickly embraces the latest opportunities that come with our ever-developing technology.I finally learned to send text messages when I realized that was the only way to reach my husband during the day.I still do not own an iPod for my trips to the gym or a GPS device to assist me when I become lost on the way to a destination. However, I believe I was one of the early participants in the world of online dating more than ten years ago.The results were more than disappointing.I met one gentleman who was at least six inches shorter than the height he shared on his profile and another who missed our lunch date altogether because he got drunk after his softball game and completely forgot about our meeting.I quickly became disenchanted and left the world of internet dating.I have no doubt that the process is now much more sophisticated and the variety of people who participate has grown.I even think that, if I was not already happily married, the expertise of Cherie Burbach could make my navigation through online profiles and first meetings much more enjoyable. In her new book, Internet Dating is Not Like Ordering a Pizza, Burbach provides in detail all of the hints you need to create a successful profile and the process to follow once a connection has been made. Her conversational writing style and practical information make this book a must-read for anyone who is ready for greater success with the online dating process.

Burbach takes her readers through each specific component of an online profile, from the headline to the essay to the use of photos. She explains how each piece that you create tells part of your story and can either draw in a potential date or end any interest with a simple choice of words.Burbach provides a thorough list of the "don'ts" for each part of the profile in bulleted form that is easy for the reader to digest because, let's be honest, we first want to we are doing wrong so that we can fix it.For example, she reminds readers "Don't call yourself a hopeless romantic" and "Don't crop an ex-boyfriend out of the photo."Once the negative elements are successfully eliminated, Burbach also shares some great suggestions for text and photos to include that really highlight one's personality. She teaches her readers how to incorporate their hobbies, families, and careers into a profile in a natural way that does not make a profile come across as dry or self-serving.Burbach also understands that men and women who have been a part of the online dating scene for some time without success are pessimistic and wary of anyone who offers new advice. So, she incorporates a "Dear Ms. Dating Consultant" section into her chapters in which she imagines some of the questions that readers will have about her advice and addresses the concerns with understanding and the attitude of someone who has been there.

Cherie Burbach met her own husband through online dating and therefore provides a valuable perspective on the way to develop a successful approach. This is not only important when she is sharing advice concerning the creation of a profile, but also when it comes to the date itself. She warns her readers to meet in a public place, set a time limit on the encounter (which she recommends to be coffee, not dinner or drinks), and take any suspicious behavior seriously. She stresses repeatedly throughout the book that you do not really know a person with whom you have been communicating online.I appreciated her honest reminder that while you can meet some wonderful people (perhaps even your life partner!) through internet dating, people must always be aware of the participants whose intentions are less than innocent and genuine.

The book Internet Dating is Not Like Ordering a Pizza is a great read that provides concrete tips for online daters on every page. The writing is clever and Burbach obviously has a real sense of respect for those who are struggling with their efforts to find a special someone through their computer screens.I know that there are millions of people with profiles on the various sites that promise to find your perfect match, and all of them would benefit from having Burbach's book in their hands the next time they sit down in front of the keyboard.

5-0 out of 5 stars A dating manual targeted at making one's way into the frenzy that is online dating
Pizza orders are one of the modern world's greatest conveniences. If only more things could be like that. "Internet Dating Is Not Like Ordering a Pizza" is a dating manual targeted at making one's way into the frenzy that is online dating, and how to deal with the frustrations that resemble real world dating. With advice on getting noticed and making one's notch in the world, "Internet Dating Is Not Like Ordering a Pizza" is a must for anyone playing the internet for true love.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book could lead to true love!
Have you tried computer dating, but found discouraging results? Do you have a profile languishing, forgotten and ignored, on a dating site? Have you given up on computer dating because "all the good ones are taken?" Well, have I got the book for you! Internet dating consultant Cherie Burbach's Internet Dating is Not Like Ordering Pizza may change your dating life, or if you have Ms. Burbach's luck it may end up changing your entire life. She met loads of great guys through online dating, one of whom she ended up marrying!

In a reassuring, upbeat tone, this author provides an easy-to-follow formula to help you present yourself well online. Her style is chatty and friendly without being at all cheesy or condescending. Burbach provides straightforward, easily applicable advice for successful internet dating. Internet Dating is Not Like Ordering a Pizza covers all the bases: writing an eye-catching profile essay (for example, "Don't call yourself a `hopeless romantic'" and please don't mention walking on beaches!), picking winning photographs to post (No kids!), writing the perfect headline (the examples of bad ones and her snappy comebacks are hilarious,) honing your search criteria (cast a wide net,) exchanging email messages with potential dates (like how to come off as open but not desperate,) finding a good match, smart and safe rules for the first date (she's a big fan ofthe 60-minute coffee shop date,) online dating etiquette (like how to let someone down easy,) and developing a good online dating attitude. Burbach also offers some good and solid "Dear Abby" -styled advice on circumstances under which you should not enter the world of internet dating (for example, if you haven't gotten over your ex,) as well as how to stay positive, how to move on from a hurtful relationship, and how to avoid coming off as an online stalker.

In addition to being thorough, clear and concise in her advice, Burbach's writing style makes reading this book feel like you're having a funny conversation with an experienced guide, a cheerleader and an honest friend all wrapped into one. The tone is light and positive with many interesting elements, such as the question and answer sections, that make reading this useful little book both fun and captivating. The author writes about her online dating experiences, "For the first time I really saw how many great guys were OUT THERE. It wasn't slim pickings. It still isn't. You just have to know how to do it. There's someone out there for you. I know it." She encourages the reader to stay optimistic and genuine, "Let some of your true-self come through, and others will naturally be attracted to you." And she helps readers chuckle while they wipe off the dust of past relationships gone bad and get back out there into the dating scene, "Now, I know what you're saying. You don't want to waste your time with people you aren't going to end up dating. To this I say: get over yourself!"

If you are at all interested in being more successful at internet dating, then I heartily recommend this book. And if you happen to be new to internet dating, you also may want to pick up Burbach's previous book At the Coffee Shop, a humorous introduction to online dating. Plus, check out all the cool articles on her website at www.thedifferencenow.com to shake up and refresh your dating life.

Quill says: Single folks who are ready to meet a lot of great people should pick up this book. At the very least, it's a fun read. At the very most...it could lead to true love!

5-0 out of 5 stars A necessary internet resource for daters!
Reviewed by Paige Lovitt for Reader Views (12/08)

If I had only had this book four years ago when I attempted Internet dating!Cherie Burbach offers sound advice for those of us who are willing to take the chance to meet potential mates online. This book will both assist people who have unsuccessfully tried Internet dating and people who are new to it.Just glancing through some of the Internet dating sites you can get a good idea of why some people might never receive a response or why they might receive the wrong responses, for example, the women who pose for their photos in lingerie but state that they are looking for a serious relationship.

Cherie Burbach discusses many mistakes that people make when creating their profiles. Her suggestions gave me a lot of food for thought. These included remarks about:bitter comments about past relationships, using improper grammar, using generic responses and posting the wrong kind of photos. My biggest gripe with the wrong photos is when it is obvious that the man has his arms around a woman who has been cut out of the photo, or when the man takes a photo of himself. Let's face it; you can't get a good angle when taking a picture like that.

Ms. Burbach relies on her experience as an Internet Dating Consultant to offer sound recommendations based upon her extensive experience in this area. She teaches the reader how to best present ourselves so that we can show off our positive attributes and encourage positive responses from potential mates.

The first piece of advice offered in the book was my favorite. She states, "You have to be complete as a single because you can't expect someone else to make you whole."This is so true.Who on earth would want that responsibility? She also promotes two huge ideas for dating success; you must have the right attitude and the right profile. Also included is a valuable list of online resources that offer information that will cover all aspects of relationships.

I highly recommend "Internet Dating is Not Like Ordering a Pizza" by Cherie Burbach. I think that these principles could also be applied to non-Internet daters that need to find new ways to present themselves that will attract the interest of others and spark up some good conversations.

it is used booked as it mentioned but it is worst..torn in between and mark with pen every page hard to read. not worth for 20$. My friend got same book but very good condition in less price as it is outdated edition. I am sorry but dont go for this!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Textbook I've Ever Read
This is probably the worst textbook I've ever used. The information, though helpful, was packed full of poorly explained diagrams and formulas in a series of unorganized chapters.

5-0 out of 5 stars satisfactory/great
This product was in great condition and arrived on time. This text was useful for learning how computers work and communicate.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good
The item was shipped and wrapped carefully. Very good service and very satisfied with the product. It was shipped before the estimated time arrival.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anexcellent overview of network theory
This book gives a comprehensive overview of computer networks and internet. Since its coverage is broad, it does not go into much detail but gives one the general overview of computer networks. It is appropriate for someone who wants to understand how the internet works, but does not need an in depth knowledge.

The book is well written, non-mathematical and explains the concepts in a way that a beginner would understand. The chapters are short, concise and very readable, making it a very good introductory book on the subject. It covers almost anything you can think of in networking. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Quite good, but...
I don't like the extensive use of illustrations of subjects via a scanning electron microscope. If users are expecting to see this sort of thing through their simple compount microscopes they'll be quite disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars microscope
Great-gransons enjoy looking through it, will introduce many interesting things to view through a microscope.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
The book is great for reference and for those of my students who need a little more simpler terms.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful material
I got it for my 4 year old together with a microscope and extra slides. It's full of pictures, so my little scientist enjoys studying it. It's divided into small chapters and includes how to use a microscope, what kind to buy, and how to use a simple microscope on all kinds of things from paper to bugs. The internet links are a great source! I think this book will be useful for many years to come.

3-0 out of 5 stars Illusrations are deceptive
The many, undoubtedly beautiful, photos are mostly from electronic scan microscopes, and arecomputer-color enhanced. They are indeed gorgeous, but the average child will be greatly disappointed that what she or he sees through their own opticalmicroscope bears little resemblance to these showpieces. Better if many more of the photos were representative of what will be seen under "normal", amateur, home conditions. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite was I looking For
This book does give alot of helpful information on how to market your website by doing such things like "Affiliate Programs", etc., but it seemed to dwell on "How to build your website" which mine was already set up.I was looking for pointers on how to promote the site not how to CREATE the site!

Not to bash this book in any way, but it wasn't my cup of tea.Maybe it will work for you or maybe it won't.

There were some suggestions he suggested that I will use, but overall I don't think it was worth the purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful reference to get started
This book is a very useful reference for any individual who needs to learn how to promote their business or website and has little funds to do so.

I was surprised by the number of opportunities to do just what the title of the book claims. My copy is now well thumbed, dog eared and written in.

My one complaint with the book is that I would like to have had some step-by-step instructions included for some of the ideas presented. This was in the case of some of the internet based suggestions. While I have come a long ways in learning how to use a computer and the internet, I am still not the most tech savvy person in the world and would have liked to have had just a little guidance in what to do.

Still, this is a very useful reference and a good starting point for ideas.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clearing up the Confusion: Bruce Brown's Steps to Success
"How to use the Internet to Advertise, Promote, and Market your Business or Web Site with Little or No Money" by Bruce Brown was a pleasant surprise. Before reading this book I was a little worried that Bruce would be just like every other entrepreneur who thinks they know what they are talking about, but he is much more than. Bruce sets out easy steps to follow when first using the Internet for your business. Each chapter is broken down as follows:
* E-Commerce and Web Sites
* Starting Your Business
* The Importance of Internet Advertising
* Generating More Traffic to your Web Site
* Branding
* Automation of your Web Site
* E-Zines and Newsletters
* Using a Successful Auto-Responder
* Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
* Banner Advertising
* Business Directions
* B2B Web Communities and Portals
* Google, Yahoo!, Overture, and Froogle Advertising
* Affiliate Programs
* Promoting Your Business Offline
* Unlocking the Secrets of eBay
All of these chapters are important to follow when starting a business or web site for your current business or starting a new one. I followed this book while creating the web site for my family business and it is still a work in progress, but it is definitely coming together with the use of this book. Each chapter is broken down into steps to encourage the success of your website. Learning the ins and outs of how to use the Internet properly greatly improves visibility to current customers and increases ability to generate new customers. The in-depth explanations of banner ads, online auctions, search engine optimization and affiliate programs can and will take your business to the next level. Not only does it explain the secrets of Internet advertising it discusses online business concepts and how to apply them to your online business.
Throughout this book Bruce talks about potential customers very frequently. Being able to reach new customers is what will grow your business. Going into an Internet business blindly is basically setting you up for failure. Understanding all of the Internet lingo and what to focus on will dramatically help you out. Even if you currently have a Web site for your business, this book will help you connect the missing link within your concept or how you place your ads. Connecting this link can be the difference of a tremendous amount of revenue from potential customers out there on the Internet.
Simply having a Web site for your business is not enough these days. It seems like every business has a Web site with the new push towards Internet marketing. You have to be able to set yourself apart from every other Web site out there. You have to remember that your competitors also have Web sites and are taking customers away from you. You can steal those customers away from your competitors by having a well thought out marketing plan by using this book. Placing your ads across the Internet is not going to be the quick simple fix to increasing revenue. It is about placement of these ads and how often they appear. Making sure to connect your marketing strategy and your business objectives are very important to the success of your business. Bruce Brown tells you where to place your ads and what to put in them to attract customers. All customers are different and need to be attracted to your company in different ways. Having multiple techniques shown in Bruce's steps will help you reach these customers.
On the negative side of things, this book did have a few down sides. I did notice grammatical errors throughout the book. I was able to understand what was being said, but it was still very annoying for a published book with great reviews to have grammatical errors. Also, I felt like there was a lot of repitition on several things, which was a bit unnecessary. In addition, when discussing the use of keywords they simply suggest that you "guess at the words or word combinations for which your potential customers are searching when they look or services using a search engine on the Internet." I did not like this at all because there is a tool on Google called Wonder-wheel which helps you find the most popular words searched for your business type. Lastly, the book mentioned e-zines earlier in the book before actually discussing what they were until chapter 7. This was a bit confusing since I didn't have a full understanding of what an "e-zine" was until later in the book.
In conclusion, I felt that this book could unquestionably turn your business into a thriving moneymaker. At times it is very repetitive, but if you think about it Bruce may just be trying to drive home his main points by repeating them throughout the book. Simply being able to see the potential within your business is not enough. You need to take action into making it a reality. I believe that this book is the difference between seeing possibilities and making them come to fruition.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very good overview, but not enough meat.
The book provided an excellent overview of e-commerce in general, but it didn't give enough "hands-on, how-to". I wanted to see more code. It also had far too much repetition. It seemed like every time a subject was mentioned, the author was compelled to explain why that subject was important.I'll refer to it for the checklists and the many recommended free web sites, which are the books greatest benefit.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but becoming slightly dated
I found this a most useful collection of various components to internet marketing.I like that the author generally gives a number of (often free) resources that are useable. There is great breadth and some depth on these topics.I recommend this as one of several books on this topic for someone starting out.It is my hope that this will be updated.I'll buy it!

Product Description

Teeming with chatrooms, online discussion groups, and blogs, the Internet offers previously unimagined opportunities for personal expression and communication. But there’s a dark side to the story. A trail of information fragments about us is forever preserved on the Internet, instantly available in a Google search. A permanent chronicle of our private lives—often of dubious reliability and sometimes totally false—will follow us wherever we go, accessible to friends, strangers, dates, employers, neighbors, relatives, and anyone else who cares to look. This engrossing book, brimming with amazing examples of gossip, slander, and rumor on the Internet, explores the profound implications of the online collision between free speech and privacy.

Daniel Solove, an authority on information privacy law, offers a fascinating account of how the Internet is transforming gossip, the way we shame others, and our ability to protect our own reputations. Focusing on blogs, Internet communities, cybermobs, and other current trends, he shows that, ironically, the unconstrained flow of information on the Internet may impede opportunities for self-development and freedom. Long-standing notions of privacy need review, the author contends: unless we establish a balance between privacy and free speech, we may discover that the freedom of the Internet makes us less free.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Future of Reputation (LocalPlan Perspective)
I've become a huge advocate of the role that "social media" can play in creating participatory environments within communities and local governments, however I've rarely taken a step back to look at the privacy implications of the rapidly emerging "Gov 2.0". Technology advocates (such as myself) tend to push a system where people dump their ideas, feelings, and misgivings about their communities into an online environment, but is there ever a moment where we stop and think about how we might be asking people to incrementally give up their privacy? Each piece of information, each opinion, each comment allows potential onlookers to gain more insight into our private lives. In The Future of Reputation author Daniel Solove takes a broad look at privacy on the internet and the consequences of what can happen when information intended toward one audience ends up in the wrong hands.(more after the jump)

The internet takes more information than we could ever hope to process and dumps it at our feet.In the midst of this information rich society, it seems that there are a greater number of people that consider their own knowledge on a subject to have reached a level suitable to critique the opinions of others. In fact with many Web 2.0 technologies, the open dissection and criticism of ideas is not only possible but in many ways highly encouraged. We freely post comments on blogs, we share information on Twitter with our own insightful twist, we quip about articles sarcastically on Facebook, and in so many other ways we no longer allow a fear of our own lack of knowledge to hold back our opinion.Solove explores the ways in which these information exchanges, criticisms, and comments function and how they diverge from our methods of communicating outside the internet.

The Future of Reputation dives into the many psychologies present on the internet and how they can allow us more freedom to express ourselves while at the same time creating a stronger responsibility to protect the reputations, agency, and autonomies of our fellow humans.Perhaps the most striking example that Solove presents of our new found responsibilities is the YouTube video of the "Star Wars Kid".Many of us passed the video along to friends and enjoyed a good laugh at his expense without ever pausing to think about the psychological impact wrought on the Star Wars Kid by being mocked by millions of people via the internet.Solove guides the reader through a variety of other internet related mishaps and illuminates the darkside of the internet's wide open frontier.

It forced me to examine the ways in which we are asking people to expose themselves and the lack of protections that we have in place for the reputations of those who want to be outspoken in our community. What are the repercussions for those individuals that we ask to make their opinions known about a particular topic? Is there anyway to protect them from any acts of retribution carried out by an employer that might not agree? Are there any true guarantees to privacy in our electronic era where all of our demographic information (and perhaps much more revealing personal information) is only a click away? While the law is still fuzzy with regards to privacy via the interent, Solove lays out the ethical and moral imperatives of how we communicate. The book examines what information we are publicizing about ourselves and shows how it could be used against us.Most importantly, Solove makes the reader stop and consider their own actions from the perspective of the people they are talking about.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but incomplete
The Future of Reputation is thoughtful and thankfully devoid of the "get off my yard" ranting that many books on the "future" of the internet fall into. For anyone that has read (and hated) The Culture of the Amateur, you're safe.

Solove discusses privacy and rumor from a legal standpoint rather than as a culture critic. It gives the reader a rational, objective discussion of the consequences of a fast paced, post first, edit later media landscape when sources are considered bonuses rather than requirements. All of which Solve analyzes with plenty of evidence, caselaw and anecdotes.

Perhaps that's why its so surprising that this book misses both the landmark internet lawsuits involving Tucker Max, who was sued for writing graphically online about a sexual encounter with Miss Vermont and for harassing a rich heir to a farming fortune through an internet messageboard. Both cases fall right into the wheelhouse of the book but are not mentioned even though their precedence was critical. (The ACLU filed an amicus brief in one.

In 2009, this book is two years old, a bit dated and missing some crucial material but is otherwise an interesting read.

This book addresses an incredibly important topic - and is well written to boot. The danger of reputations ruined by carelessness, or by deliberate ill will, should be understood. In fact, this book should be mandatory for human resources personnel and any search committee that uses the Internet to check on a potential employee.

Hopefully Solove will follow up soon with another book. Sites such as Topix, provide a frightening forum for people who are less than ethical.Although Topix provides an alternative format for news, there is no oversight for accuracy or even truth. If Orson Welles had had access to the Internet, perhaps we would all have learned a valuable lesson about questioning and independent thinking. Since Welles is no longer with us, at least we have Daniel Solove to encourage us to question timely issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking
Solove's book doesn't provide answers, rather it provides situations that help you ask the right questions.

As an extra bonus it is extremely well written and an enjoyable read.

What I loved about this book is that it asks us to rethink assumptions about how we define ourselves in an age where search engines tell our story to future employers and old high-school classmates. The book helped me appreciate that online shaming plays a new and perhaps important role in shaping behavior but also has serious costs. It offers thoughtful suggestions for what we can do about these problems without sacrificing so much of what is liberating about our online interactions. This is a must read for anyone who is interested in living a full and informed life in the Internet age. ...
