4-0 out of 5 stars As I make the transition to System Verilog, this book sits at my left hand
I am using the book and getting value from it.the examples are not complete, but in a week I have scanned the book and had it open to review several times a day as I write and debug code.

On choosing which books to get to start with System Verilog: This one is focused on design, so has pointers on synthesizable descriptions and types. If you are doing verification you need both this and its companion, SystemVerilog for Verification: A Guide to Learning the Testbench Language Features by Chris Spear

You also need a verilog starter book, I may come back with an update on a recommendation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I use SystemVerilog for test bench coding.Nice to see a revised edition to correct and improve the original. This book is fantastic: good examples, well thought out.The topics flow well and are well written.Don't waste your time or money with any other SV book - this is it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for experienced Verilog designers
(My review is about the 2006 2nd-edition, not the older 1st edition!)

In general, I agree with the other reviews. This book is written for an audience of Verilog designers, who know the Verilog language (and its limitations) all to well. The book covers Systemverilog's new features like, enum, struct, interfaces, etc., from the perspective of "how to write better RTL-code using Systemverilog instead of Verilog.'For example, it explains the pros/cons of the (Systemverilog) "interface" construct, vs a flat group of (Verilog) module-port declarations. The discussion helps designers appreciate RTL-coding from a (slightly) higher levle of abstraction.

You don't need a specific background (i.e. design-engineer) to benefit from this book; you just need a good familiarity with conventional Verilog.

As others have said, this book is not suitable as a reference. The paragraphs flow well, but it's hard to lookup an arbitrary topic from the index. So far, no hardcover-book can displace the official IEEE Systemverilog LRM as the best reference.

And since the book focuses on the 'design' (synthesizeable) aspect of Systemverilog, it doesn't cover non-synthesizeable language features (like classes, constrained random variables, etc.) ... Read more

Product Description

New manufacturing technologies have made possible the integration of entire systems on a single chip. This new design paradigm, termed system-on-chip (SOC), together with its associated manufacturing problems, represents a real challenge for designers.

SOC is also reshaping approaches to test and validation activities. These are beginning to migrate from the traditional register-transfer or gate levels of abstraction to the system level. Until now, test and validation have not been supported by system-level design tools so designers have lacked the infrastructure to exploit all the benefits stemming from the adoption of the system level of abstraction. Research efforts are already addressing this issue.

This monograph provides a state-of-the-art overview of the current validation and test techniques by covering all aspects of the subject including:

  • modeling of bugs and defects;
  • stimulus generation for validation and test purposes (including timing errors;
  • design for testability.

5-0 out of 5 stars man in the machine
Hardware in trade paperback?....finally. Its been a long wait but the"high tech dreadnought" gets his overdue solo spotlight. Yes,Icon was a great series with a unique hero.Yes,the wildly popular static was a refreshing character with laugh out loud humorous dialogue, but it was Hardware the resident "bad boy of Dakota" that arguably was the crown jewel of Milestone media comics.Hardware made its memorable debut in 1993 during the so called "big boom" period in comics.Like many comics of that era Hardware was brash and uncompromising. That's where the similarities end.The 90's comic book anti-heroes were mostly big guns, bigger attitudes, big muscles and big breasted heroines that lacked depth and insight. In contrast writer/creator Dwayne Mcduffie crafted a story that was thought provoking, complex, and engrossing to the highest degree.Somewhat ahead of its time,Hardware reads even more relevant today.Scan across current tv landscape and you will see bits of Mcduffie's masterpiece.Young prodigy secretly plotting against their larger than life mentor and boss?, those elements are the backbone of Fx's twisty legal drama Damages.Cranky genius who takes a big delight in displaying the huge gap between his intelligence and everyone around him?,look no further than the critically acclaimed medical drama House m.d.This does not suggest Hardware influenced these brilliant shows,it does show how timeless the themes that were explored during the series were. Hardware introduces readers to Curtis Metcalf a genius level scientist/inventor who is both cocky and brooding at the same time.It is very apparent early on Curtis Metcalf is cut from a different cloth than Marvel comics'Tony Starks.Curtis benefactor is world renowned inventor millionaire Edwin Alva. Alva spotted Curtis brilliance at an early age and pretty much raised and nurtured Curtis in father like fashion Curtis eventually becomes Alva's top earner and inventor at his company.Without giving plot points away, I will say certain events transpire that cause a major rift between the two men.Out of this confrontation comes Metcalfs greatest invention, a mind boggling suit of armor which he dons called Hardware. So would be king is denied keys to the kingdom so,he destroys the kingdom, end of story right? Not quite. The fact that Curtis Metcalf is black and Edwin Alva is white must mean Hardware is basically a story about an angry black man seeking revenge against white, corporate America right? Not quite. In fact, not even close.Mcduffie weaves a taut narrative that never goes in any predictable direction. This is one of many reasons why Hardware is such a great read. The hallmark of any great comic series is strong characters to interact with the central character.Edwin Alva,Barraki young,Deacon Stuart, and cracked mirror image villain Deathwish rounds out great ensemble. There is a little something for everyone. If you love great writing,Hardware has it.If you love good action in your comic tales,Hardware has it.If you love science fiction based stories, hardware has it.All of this is backed by the gritty outstanding art of Denys Cowen.I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed reading Hardware. My only complaint is that although some capable writers wrote Hardware none had handle on the character like Dwayne Mcduffie.Towards the latter stages of its run the character became mostly attitude and lacked the charm and sarcastic wit that was infused by Mcduffie.Particularly irritating was the back and forth banter between Hardware and Dobie, ala Deathlok.Hardware's strength was that it stressed the man in the machine both figuratively and literally. Some of the writers that followed lost sight of that. But I digress. This review is for the first eight issues that are now available in trade paperback. If the first 30 issues are classic than the first eight are near flawless. Hardware in trade paperback?....about time. ... Read more

Product Description
Dr. Melham shows here how formal logic can be used to specify the behavior of hardware designs and reason about their correctness. A primary theme of the book is the use of abstraction in hardware specification and verification. The author describes how certain fundamental abstraction mechanisms for hardware verification can be formalized in logic and used to express assertions about design correctness and the relative accuracy of models of hardware behavior. His approach is pragmatic and driven by examples. He also includes an introduction to higher-order logic, which is a widely used formalism in this subject, and describes how that formalism is actually used for hardware verification. The book is based in part on the author's own research as well as on graduate teaching. Thus it can be used to accompany courses on hardware verification and as a resource for research workers. ... The Practical, Start-to-Finish Guide to Modern Digital Design Verification

As digital logic designs grow larger and more complex, functional verification has become the number one bottleneck in the design process. Reducing verification time is crucial to project success, yet many practicing engineers have had little formal training in verification, and little exposure to the newest solutions. Hardware Design Verification systematically presents today's most valuable simulation-based and formal verification techniques, helping test and design engineers choose the best approach for each project, quickly gain confidence in their designs, and move into fabrication far more rapidly. College students will find that coverage of verification principles and common industry practices will help them prepare for jobs as future verification engineers.

Author William K. Lam, one of the world's leading experts in design verification, is a recent winner of the Chairman's Award for Innovation, Sun Microsystems' most prestigious technical achievement award. Drawing on his wide-ranging experience, he introduces the foundational principles of verification, presents traditional techniques that have survived the test of time, and introduces emerging techniques for today's most challenging designs. Throughout, Lam emphasizes practical examples rather than mathematical proofs; wherever advanced math is essential, he explains it clearly and accessibly.

Coverage includes

  • Simulation-based versus formal verification: advantages, disadvantages, and tradeoffs
  • Coding for verification: functional and timing correctness, syntactical and structure checks, simulation performance, and more
  • Simulator architectures and operations, including event-driven, cycle-based, hybrid, and hardware-based simulators
  • Testbench organization, design, and tools: creating a fast, efficient test environment
  • Test scenarios and assertion: planning, test cases, test generators, commercial and Verilog assertions, and more
  • Ensuring complete coverage, including code, parameters, functions, items, and cross-coverage
  • The verification cycle: failure capture, scope reduction, bug tracking, simulation data dumping, isolation of underlying causes, revision control, regression, release mechanisms, and tape-out criteria
  • An accessible introduction to the mathematics and algorithms of formal verification, from Boolean functions to state-machine equivalence and graph algorithms
  • Decision diagrams, equivalence checking, and symbolic simulation
  • Model checking and symbolic computation

Simply put, Hardware Design Verification will help you improve and accelerate your entire verification process--from planning through tape-out--so you can get to market faster with higher quality designs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Comprehensive Book
I have read many books on hardware verification covering simulation, emulation, and formal verification. Lam's book is the most comprehensive and the best explained. The book covers simulation, test plans, coverage metrics, and formal verification. It covers the theory and the practical issues. HDL examples of test benches for various kinds of hardware properties and behaviors are provided in the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars good graduate level text
Lam addresses an increasingly troubling problem in semiconductor design. As the transistor count keeps climbing, how to adequately simulate and test a chip?

Well, simulation comes first. The book describes design verification, where by this Lam restricts himself to functional verification. This is itself a large field, as can be appreciated by what the book presents of it. The text gives a good account of key ideas like equivalence checking and property checking. Where the basic idea is to have a redundant check that will hopefully point out any errors.

Then simulations are considered. These take up a large portion of the text. One approach is to build a comprehensive set of input test vectors. Of course, usually the number of possible combinations is too large to test all of these. But Lam points out that often groupings of the input are possible, with you only needing to test a few values from each group.

Another approach is to start from a formal set of specifications. It may be fair to say that both involve different types of complexity.

Lam also helps the reader by furnishing an extended problem set at the end of each chapter. The problems are nontrivial enough to give the reader a good workout. Very suitable as a graduate text, as well as at the professional level.

5-0 out of 5 stars good depth and breadth on both simulation and formal stuff
Finally a book on both simulation and formal verification with good depth. My company uses both tools on a daily basis.

I always wanted to learn about formal verification. Many books I have are too mathematical to follow. This book gives an easy intro. to formal verification and leads to the inner working of algorithms in formal verification. The sections on equivalence checking and symbolic simulation are very enlightening. Now I am more confident working with formal tools, after I know the principles behind them.

The book is great on simulation-based verification. it has a lot of practical advices and its presentation is very well organized. The chapters on coding for verification is especially practical --- I put them into use right away. The testbench chapter gives not only examples but also provides an insightful overview of testbench architecture. I skimmed through the chapter on simulators and caught a couple of good insights on the architectures of various kinds of simulators. I haven't finished the book yet but it is so far so good.

The only problem is that the book is too big, 600 pages! Some of the stuff probably should belong to another book.

In summary, I think every verification and design engineer should read it to get a running start. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Microprocessors and Peripherals Review
This book was originally used as a college text book for DeVry Institutes' (Now University) Associates Degree Program. It was introduced into the ciriculum in the 5th trimester.

It is a good book for those already familiar with digital components. It is however, very dated since it was published in 1988.

It uses old 8088, Z80 and Motorola 6800 (Apple/Mac) processors to name a few.It also uses old "BASIC" programming.Which is what was used before Visual Basic. This makes it pretty much useless as far as learning newer technology but, it is a good starter book for those wanting to get a basic understanding of how microcomputers got started and the language used.

The Book delves into the various microprocessors and thier support chips, storage discs (Hard/floppy Drives), keyborads, stepper motors, communication devices, i.e. modems, video technology, and printers. It also provides instruction sets for the 8085 Z80, and 6800 processors, data sheets and excersize questions and answers, and finally application examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really made things "click"
After reading this book, computers weren't as scary. Somehow it made sense how it operates. Now I enjoy time on the computer!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good, very good!
I have read several beginner computer books lately and this is by far best of them, if this is beginner book at all! This book doesn't underestimate the intelligence of reader and doesn't "buy more pages" with nonsense. I mean, if you don't know how to move mouse or where Enter button is on keyboard, buy '-for dummies' books. But if you want to get little bit (well a lot actually) deeper than that, buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Seller
Book was in perfect condition as promised. Service was great and shipping wason time. The price was also very reasonable. Overall excellent seller. Would buy from again and recommend to others.

4-0 out of 5 stars explains hardware and software to a general audience
Spraul gives a quick and easy introduction to explaining this mysterious thing call computer science. He explains the common Neumann architecture of a single CPU computer. Something which has essentially remained unchanged since the Manhattan Project.

Then he talks about the software that runs on this hardware. From this model of software running on 1 computer, the discussion segues naturally into a network of such machines. Wherein the Internet appears. And its common version, the Web, which many users casually and wrongly assume to be synonymous with it.

There is little specialised hardware knowledge or maths required for the book. Indeed, the Boolean logic is shown to be utterly simple. Though, within the constraints of his presentation, the reader is not shown enough to appreciate that from the Boolean logic, one can build up an entire edifice of digital maths. [It's properly the subject of a more advanced text.] ... Read more

The exponential increase in transistor density on computer chips, supporting Moore¿s law now for four decades, poses new design challenges to engineers and computer scientists alike. New techniques for managing complexity must be developed if circuits are to take full advantage of the vast numbers of transistors available.

This book investigates both the design of high-level languages for hardware description and techniques involved in translating these high-level languages to silicon. The author introduces the first-order functional language SAFL, designed specifically for behavioral hardware description, and describes the implementation of its associated silicon compiler. Finally, the SAFL language is extended with pi-calculus style channels and channel passing and primitives for structural-level circuit description. The semantics of these languages is formalized and results are presented arising from the generation of real hardware exploiting these techniques.

This monograph is based on the author¿s PhD work conducted at the Computer Laboratory of the University of Cambridge, UK, under the supervision of Dr. Alan Mycroft.

1-0 out of 5 stars For ages 5 and under
This book is only helpful for extremely young children that want to learn about basic computer architecture. There is extremely little redeeming value about this book. The explanations of basic concepts are ludicrouslylaughable. The title should be changed from "The Architecture ofComputer Hardware and Systems Software: An Information TechnologyApproach" to "Watered Down Computer Architecture that is even toobasic and elementary for even dummies and idiots".Any money spent onthis book is better spent on a pyramid scheme.

If you want to learn aboutcomputer architecture, I would recommend: "Computer Architecture: AQuantitative Approach" by John Hennessy and David Patterson.

4-0 out of 5 stars A comfortable and well-written read
This book is an excellent introduction for those familiar with computers, but is neither for dummies nor for rocket scientists.

It is a well-balanced book suitable for both IT students and those working in the industry who want to know what goes on in PCs and system servers. The cleanlayout, the sequence of information presentation and the author's writingstyle makes this diffcult topic a joy to read about.

Some criticism -the presentation of numbers could be reduced, the appendices on logic couldbe expanded and a chapter on client-server architecture would be the icingon the cake. Another worthy book but a bit dry is 'Silberschatz et al.'.Check it out before you buy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much useless detail, not enough context
Required text for a computer course...very poor. I would suggest a Scott Mueller book instead. Lacked context, went into too much detail.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is crappy..I use it for a course
This book tells you a lot about the computer but the problems at the end of the chapters are very BAD. The problems really don't correlate with thetext. The problems are too vauge.

2-0 out of 5 stars Practice questions without giving any answers!
Yes, it seems to be a readable book. But what kind of crappy book contains practice questions without giving you any answers? How am I supposed to use this book to study from if I have no way of knowing that my answers to theauthor's questions are right?

Also, I would say that although Irv'swriting style is readable it is wordy. It would be a much better book ifthere was a summary section following each section of each chapter. And ifthe damn answers were in there! ... Read more

Product Description

Over the past 15 years, the twin giants of Asia—China and India—have jumped on the opportunity provided by the IT revolution to turbocharge their economic growth. India has become a software services powerhouse, while China churns out much of the world's IT hardware. How did these countries achieve global competitiveness so quickly? Why did software predominate in one and hardware the other?

This book represents the first attempt to go beyond anecdote and generalization in discussing the unprecedented emergence of these new industries over such a short period. It presents the first rigorous comparison of the growth performance of hardware manufacturing and software services sectors in China and India. It examines the economic context and the business environment for private enterprise in China and India, and considers how far differences in economic policies or the business environment can go in explaining the observed distinctions between the two. The book concludes by evaluating explanations for the growth performance of hardware and software in each country, drawing conclusions for future economic policies and business strategies.
