5-0 out of 5 stars You Can Almost Hear The Ringmaster!
Circus fonts have always been fun to use and a number of these are unique. Dan Solo had a huge collection of great old and new type faces. You'll find 24 of them here. The fonts are in both Windows True Type and Macintosh formats. The pages have the complete alphabets and a character chart. Be sure to notice the "extra characters" that are offered in some fonts. ... Read more

Product Description

This lively account of the printed word draws together the histories of typography and printing into one robustly illustrated volume, and describes how dramatic changes in technology have affected type design. Historical paintings, engravings, and photographs give a visual context to the different eras of type design and print, and key typefaces from each historical era are discussed and compared to others of the era. The original use of each typeface is pictured alongside contemporary examples, providing a broad sense of the character of each face. Sidebars explain how to use individual typefaces, warn of pitfalls, and highlight the particular benefits of using the face. A superb and engaging introduction to the world of typography, the book is also a vital reference for anyone who works with type and knows that understanding the history of letterforms is key to using type creatively and effectively.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally-a great book on type!
Finally, a great book on typefaces! I must have a dozen books on type, and this book has leaped to the front on my list!

Most books on fonts are written for graphic artist professionals, who generally care little about the history of type, but are big into the 'feel' of type. I find these too ephemeral, too highbrow, for someone with a scientific background. Others are written for people interested in the history of type, printing, etc., and provide no information on using type today.

This book covers both bases well. It treats type faces historically, tells why some were invented (some fonts were developed as a result of the invention of advertising) and gives (at least to those of us who do graphic design work part-time-I work for a small company and do occasional graphic design) hints on using type faces, like which faces generally do well as body type versus headline matter, when leading or spacing is needed, etc. Great examples, both historic and current, show examples of many fonts in use.

Very well printed, in a large enough size to make examples clearly visible (where many type books fail) and provides multiple examples of using each type face (another common failing). Highly recommended for everyone interested in the history of printing and to beginners and amateurs in the use of typography today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good
It was nice doing business with you. I got the item in good condition. Keep it up!

5-0 out of 5 stars From Gutenberg to Opentype

5-0 out of 5 stars A welcome addition
From Gutenberg To Open Type: An Illustrated History Of Type From The Earliest Letterforms To The Latest Digital Fonts by Robin Dodd (Associate Lecturer, London College of Communications) is a seminal and detailed historical survey of the printed letter from the era of the Gutenberg press moveable fonts down to today's desktop publishing software typefaces. Profusely illustrated throughout, From Gutenberg To Open Type is especially recommended to the attention of academicians, authors, publishers, and non-specialist general readers with an interest in the history of printing as well as professionals, artists and designers who work with type design and print. Of special note are the side panels to the regular text that explains how to use individual typefaces, notes common pitfalls, and showcases specifically related benefits to a given font. Informed and informative, From Gutenberg To Open Type is a welcome addition to personal, professional, and academic library reference collections. ... Read more

Product Description

Graphic designers love music. This is attested not least by the tremendous enthusiasm that readers of the typography magazine Slanted bring to its "Typo Lyrics" column, in which designers interpret music in entirely new ways with the help of fonts. For this publication of the same name, celebrated graphic designers like Fons Hickmann as well as talented young designers from all over the world have taken song lyrics and used them as the inspiration for innovative font designs. The result is a collection of fascinating visuals "typographic images" that present contemporary fonts a little bit differently. The extraordinary interplay of type design and music brings the fonts to life and practically sets them dancing. In contrast to classical pattern books and font fans, this volume provides a special, more emotional experience of typography and illustrates the great expressive potential of typefaces. On analogy with the traditional classification of fonts, the book is organized into eleven chapters, each of which treats a particular font family and song lyrics from a particular musical style.

5-0 out of 5 stars CONCISE EXPLANATIONS for Real World Usage
When OS 9 Classic was retired, it forced a radical transition to reorganize and manage fonts without the ATM.

This book is the clearest and simplest guide for OSX users to understand how font functionality has altered in the OSX environment. Also vital to crossplatform users, the author Zardetto Aker simplifies the complex nature of sharing fonts between two platform radicals (Windows and APPLE).

Those who earn their living in computer design using real world situations would benefit from buying this book.

One analogy that describes it best:

Any graphic project is like the recipe for a perfect pot of "CHILI"
FONTS are the spices going into that pot.
If you don't manage the spice in your chili, like not managing the fonts in your project .... You wind up with disaster.

MUST READING ... Zardetto Akers' Font Management in OSX takes the confusion out of the font dynamics restructured on OSX.

4-0 out of 5 stars A guide through the labyrinth
I love my Mac, & I love typography. What I don't love is the mind-numbing complexity of OSX's font handling. Although I don't lament the passing of the ever-crashing OS9, it's framework for fonts was beautifully simple. There's a price for progress.

This book provides what's needed to understand the foundation concepts and terminology, and to deal confidently with common font issues. Thoroughly explained, it's made apparent that the font framework of OSX is not so incomprehensible after all. For any tech-savvy graphic artist or designer, an indispensable volume for your reference shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Making the Mac Safe for Fonts
What a splendid guide! Even if you are content to useTIMES ROMAN all the time, you should still look at this book to see a model of how to write a computer guide. None of the breezy self conscious humor you find in some books (the Dummy series or Scott Kelby's otherwise informative PhotoShop books). But friendlier and more attuned to the reader's anxieties and potential mistakes than the standard dry guides (e.g. the Missing Manuals series, which are not bad). Aker seems to sense exactly what you might need to know at just the right moment, but yet does not overwhelm you without a lot of detail all at once.

I recently switched from a PC (since 1980)to Mac, which is as everyone said so much more elegant, stable and better in almost every respect. But the font system is just as complicated and eccentric in OS X as in Windows XP.You need to do some housekeeping even if you are not a font maven. Follow the steps carefully laid out in Chapter 2 (rather tedious but precise), and your system will run more smoothly and you will know a lot about where your fonts are, and how to keep them behaving well.

I am almost never moved to write reviews here, and certainly not of computer books. But this is an exceptional contribution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solved the mess!
I do graphics and own Macs from October, 1985. I passed thru all the font technologies that were done into the computer... from enlarging 72pt bitmaps and correcting them, the early times of Adobe's ATM and so on.
But --maybe I'm getting old-- with the introduction of Mac OS X, typography went almost out of control for me. Althought I do not use per se Office I need to install it to open others files... and it destroy any organizated fonts folders that you had managed,
Then, in a desperate move, I bought Zardetto's book!
And everything came back to order: clear instructions lead me in a clever and consistent way. I confess I did it twice. First time I said myself: "I'm an old macintoshian..." But then I realized that following the step-by-step instructions was more inteligent. Then, with everything in order, I was back "in control".
So, my advice --for newbies and oldies-- follow the instructions and then personalize your fonts. OK, first buy and read the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fix font problems - Flawlessly
Face it - you'd think just putting your fonts in the FONT folder would be sufficient. But, strange things do happen. And, for me it is never at a good time.Like when you upgrade Adobe CS ... which made half my fonts DISAPPEAR.
Thanks for the info and instructions about AdobeFntXX.lst alone - made this book a must have in my library.
And,that was just one small enlightened moment Aker's offered ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible!
Bought this book for a friend who's in the graphic design business;all this book does is show you a bunch of fonts on paper, you still have to purchase the fonts through seperate vendors.TOTAL RIP OFF!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is great!0 Stars for Amazon though... Consider Yourself Warned!
I bought this book from Amazon thinking that I'd have better luck than the Oct. 2005 shopper... Boy was I wrong! Not only is the book all broken in/cover torn & scratched... the CD IS MISSING!!! That's part of the reason I bought this book. I purchased this book "brand new" from Amazon (triple-checked my receipt to confirm).

The book itself is great, but please do yourself a favor and DO NOT buy this book from Amazon--you'll be thoroughly disappointed.

1-0 out of 5 stars bad for business
this item was described as brand new in plastic wrap, which is why i purchased it as a gift for a friend. not only was this item CLEARLY used, it was falling apart. the book was shipped to me with a broken spine, the paper sover had marks all over it and there was NO plastic wrap protecting the item. i am very upset with the service i received, and will NOT be shopping with amazon again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Resource for graphic artists and web designers--wonderful
This is an unusual volume; you get a book with 408 pages of various resources, organized by font foundry. You can sample the work of each foundry and get an idea of their product line.

Best of all, the front of the book has in index in alphabetical order showing each font. So you can locate a font you like and then look it up for additional information.

You can also find the AIGA's guide to the Use of Fonts, important for understanding copyright in using fonts in your work.

The bonus CD has 33 fully-licensed fonts. Not all of them are unique--you can find some of these gratis on the web, but the collection is handy for those who can't get enough fonts. I only found a few of these really worth having.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Reference
Although this book was printed 15 years ago, it remains one of the best reference guides to type faces. Back when I was still working with type, when I needed to identify a type face, I turned to this book first. It's one of the few that show the entire alphabet (usually) in an easy to see size. It's still valuable today since many of the fonts are timeless classics. Another feature is the font listing (and brief showing) by foundry. Some of the foundries are now out of business so this is also a historical reference. If you plan to purchase the book, you might want to shop around for one since the price for the used copies varies greatly. Be sure you get a nice clean, unmarked copy, though. The paper for the pages and the cover are a bit thin and if the previous owner was careless with it, the book will show signs of usage (wear). I have two copies. One is my "working copy" and the other is my "bookshelf copy". Highly recommended to anyone that has an interst in type.

5-0 out of 5 stars Font Reference Guide a Typesetters must!
I highly recommend!! It is an excellent font reference book for anyone that uses many fonts for production or personal use. Having an extensive "visual" of fonts makes matching up new client fonts so much easier. A must have for typsetters and graphic designers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Identify A Font
The title sums it up. This is a reference for fonts. The sample print is very fine quality displaying listed fonts at their best. This is a book that has a place on any graphic artist's bookshelf. I thumb through this like a dictionary. So many fonts are listed this book would be huge if not for the fine weight of the paper it is printed on. This makes the book fragile for a frequently handled reference. This is my only regret. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Une auteure à découvrir

... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll Surely Like These Fonts!
I bet you'll find several fonts here that will become favorites. Dan Solo had a huge collection of great old and new type faces. You'll find 24 of them here. The fonts are in both Windows True Type and Macintosh formats. The pages have the complete alphabets and a character chart. Be sure to notice the "extra characters" that are offered in some fonts.

3-0 out of 5 stars Dan X Solo presents alot of nice fonts in clipart .
Dover has done alot to preserve the classic graphic artwork of the 19th & 20th century , presenting it as "copyright free" for minor use for those who would rather copy than make there own artwork . Here is achance to have those fonts at a reasonable price . Dan has done pretty goodin the past , but I would like to see what is on it before I buy it. On theother hand, Carol Belanger Grafton has given Dover much better qualitycollections and I would buy her work without question . Visual previewnecessary . ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Unique Addition to Any Typophile's Library
This English-language reissue provides a quick overview of some important contemporary type designers and their creations. The authors review a fairly unique collection of typefaces in this compact book. Anyone interested in type design would appreciate this book on a few levels. First, it features sketches and development drawings of many typefaces in progress, showing some of the designers' thought process. Secondly, there are quite a few examples of the typefaces in use, which always gives a nice context to the types, since they can often look and feel quite different when just seen as an alphabet or specimen. Third, the authors provide nice insight into the qualities of many of the designs, pointing out some neat aesthetic and practical details which make them unique and interesting. I didn't necessarily agree completely with the authors' categorization of designs, and I would have liked to see more specimens of complete type families, but the editing and curation of types is delightful and the book is nicely fast-paced, with lots of illustrations. The price is right, too. ... Read more
