Product Description
Digital preservation is the management of digitalinformation over time. Preservation of digital informationis widely considered to require more constant and ongoingattention than preservation of other media[1] . Thisconstant input of effort, time, and money to handle rapidtechnological and organisational advance is considered themain stumbling block for preserving digital information.Indeed, while we are still able to read our writtenheritage from several thousand years ago, the digitalinformation created merely a decade ago is in seriousdanger of being lost, creating a digital Dark Age. Digitalpreservation can therefore be seen as the set of processesand activities that ensure continued access to informationand all kinds of records, scientific and cultural heritageexisting in digital formats. This includes the preservationof materials resulting from digital reformatting, butparticularly information that is born-digital and has noanalog counterpart. In the language of digital imaging andelectronic resources, preservation is no longer just theproduct of a program but an ongoing process. ... Read more

Excerpt: QEMU is a processor emulator that relies on dynamic binary translation to achieve a reasonable speed while being easy to port on new host CPU architectures. In conjunction with CPU emulation, it also provides a set of device models, allowing it to run a variety of unmodified guest operating systems; it can thus be viewed as a hosted virtual machine monitor. It also provides an accelerated mode for supporting a mixture of binary translation (for kernel code) and native execution (for user code), in the same fashion as VMware Workstation and Microsoft Virtual PC. QEMU can also be used purely for CPU emulation for user level processes; in this mode of operation it is most similar to Valgrind. One feature exclusive to QEMU is that of portability: the virtual machines can be run on any PC, even those where the user has only limited rights with no administrator access, making the 'PC-on-a-USB-stick' concept very real. Similar applications exist (such as MojoPac) but they currently require administrator rights to run, making them useless in areas such as public libraries, internet cafes, and so on. QEMU was written by Fabrice Bellard and is free software. Specifically, the QEMU virtual CPU core library is released under the GNU Lesser General Public License (GNU LGPL). Many hardware device emulation sources a...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1465669 ... Read more

Excerpt: Virtual Console ), sometimes abbreviated as VC, is a specialized section of the Nintendo Wii Shop Channel, an online service that allows players to purchase and download games and other software for Nintendo's Wii gaming console. The Virtual Console lineup consists of titles originally released on past consoles. These titles are run in their original forms through software emulation, and can be purchased for between 500 and 1200 Wii Points depending on system, rarity, and/or demand. The library of past games currently consists of titles originating from the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and Nintendo 64, as well as Sega's Master System and Mega Drive/Genesis, NEC's TurboGrafx-16 and TurboGrafx-CD, SNK's Neo Geo AES, Commodore 64 (Europe and North America only) and MSX (Japan only). Virtual Console Arcade allows players to download video arcade games. Nintendo has no plans to add Nintendo GameCube games to Virtual Console due to their 1.4 GB capacity (and even higher for certain games), and because the Wii is already backward compatible with the GameCube's original Game Discs. Virtual Console titles have been downloaded over ten million times as of December 2007. While the gameplay remains unchanged for all of the classic titles offered for the Virtual Console, Nintendo has stated that some games may be improved with sharper graphics or better frame rates. Certainly, many PAL SNES games run with significantly reduced borders compared to the original cartridge releases. As with disc-based games, the Virtual Console service is region-locked that is, different versions of games are provided...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2622904 ... Read more

Excerpt: The Emulator is the name given to a series of disk-based digital sampling keyboards manufactured by E-mu Systems from 1982 until 1990. Though not the first commercial sampler, the Emulator was among the first to find wide use among ordinary musicians, due to its relatively low price and its size, which allowed for its use in live performance. It was also innovative in its integration of computer technology with electronic keyboards. E-mu Systems was founded in 1971 and began business as a manufacturer of microchips, digital scanning keyboards, and components for electronic instruments. Licensing this technology gave E-mu ample funds to invest in research and development, and they began to develop boutique synthesizers for niche markets, including a series of modular synthesizers and the high-end Audity system. In 1979, founders Scott Wedge and Dave Rossum saw the Fairlight CMI and the Linn LM-1 at a convention, inspiring them to design and produce a less expensive keyboard that made use of digital sampling. Originally, E-mu considered selling the design for the Emulator to Sequential Circuits, who, at the time, was using E-mus keyboard design in their popular Prophet-5 synthesizer. However, soon afterward, Sequential Circuits stopped paying E-mu royalties on their keyboard design, which forced E-mu to release the Emulator themselves. Finally released in 1982, the Emulator was a floppy disk-based keyboard workstation which enabled the musician to sample sounds, recording them to non-volatile media and allowing the samples to be played back as musical notes on the keyboard. The 5 1/4" floppy disk drive enabled the owner to build a ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1194220 ... Read more

Excerpt: VisualBoyAdvance (commonly abbreviated as VBA) is an emulator of the Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance handheld game consoles sold by Nintendo. Besides the DirectX version for the Windows platform, there is also one that is based on the free platform independent graphics library SDL. This is available for a variety of operating systems like Linux, BSD, Mac OS X, Xbox, and BeOS. VisualBoyAdvance has also been ported to GameCube, Wii, and Zune HD. As of 2008, VisualBoyAdvance is the most popular such emulator for Windows. Distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License, VisualBoyAdvance is free software. The VisualBoyAdvance project was started by Forgotten. When this person left the development of the emulator, the project was handed over to a team named VBA Team, led by hacker kxu. Development on the original VisualBoyAdvance stopped in 2004 with versions 1.7.2 and 1.8.0 beta 3, and a number of forked versions were made by various developers in the years since then. A team of hackers has assembled to code a version of the emulator named VBA-M, which aims to combine all features and fixes from different forked versions into a single release. VBA-M development is actively in progress and has received a number of updates in 2008 and 2009; some versions can only be downloaded from the SourceForge project page. VBA-M has not released a stable version yet, but it already has many more features than the original VisualBoyAdvance (for example, verified compatibility with Windows Vista and Windows 7, many more graphic filters, and debugging tools). The Xbox 360 competes with Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii as part of the seventh generation of video game consoles. Some major features of the Xbox 360 are its integrated Xbox Live service that allows players to compete online, download arcade games, game demos, trailers, TV shows, music and movies and its Windows Media Center multimedia capabilities. The Xbox 360 also offers region specific access to third-party media streaming services such as Netflix in the USA or Sky TV in the UK. The Xbox 360 was officially unveiled on MTV on May 12, 2005, with detailed launch and game information divulged later that month at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). The console sold out completely upon release in all regions except in Japan, and, as of April 2010, there are over 40 million Xbox 360 consoles worldwide. The Xbox 360 is currently available in two configurationsthe "Arcade" and the "Elite"each with its own selection of accessories. Known during development as Xenon, Xbox 2, Xbox FS, Xbox Next, or NextBox, the Xbox 360 was conceived in early 2003. In February 2003, planning for the Xenon software platform began, and was headed by Microsoft's Vice President J Allard. That month, Microsoft held an event for 400 developers in Bellevue, Washington to recruit support for the system. Also that month, Peter Moore, former president of Sega of America, joined Microsoft. Chapters: Dosbox, Virtual Dos Machine, E/os, Dosemu. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 23. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: DOSBox is an emulator which emulates an IBM PC compatible computer running MS-DOS. It is intended especially for use with old PC games. DOSBox is free software. DOSBox is a command-line program, configured either by a set of command-line arguments or by editing a plain text configuration file. For ease of use, several graphical front-ends have been developed by the user community. DOSBox is a full CPU emulator, capable of running DOS programs that require the CPU to be in either real mode or protected mode. Other similar programs, such as dosemu or VDMs for Windows and OS/2, provide compatibility layers and rely on virtualization capabilities of the 386 family processors. Since DOSBox can emulate its CPU by interpretation, it is independent of its host CPU. However, on systems which provide the i386 instruction set, the option to use dynamic instruction translation is available in DOSBox. Though this setting is less accurate and reliable, it is faster than interpretive CPU emulation. It is capable of emulating many types of graphics and sound hardware. Graphics emulation includes text mode, Hercules, CGA (including composite and 160x100x16 tweaked modes), Tandy, EGA, VGA (including Mode X and other tweaks), VESA, and full S3 Trio 64 emulation. Sound hardware that can be emulated includes the PC speaker, AdLib, Gravis Ultrasound, Tandy, Creative Music System/GameBlaster, Sound Blaster 1.x/2.0/Pro/16, MPU-401, and Disney Sound Source. (MT-32/CM-32L emulation is included in unofficial builds, but not in the official source code repository due to need for copyrighted ROM images.) Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Post-silicon validation and debug is the last step in the development of a semiconductor integrated circuit. During the pre-silicon process, engineers test devices in a virtual environment with sophisticated simulation, emulation, and formal verification tools. In contrast, post-silicon validation tests occur on actual devices running at-speed in commercial, real-world system boards using logic analyzer and assertion-based tools. Large semiconductor companies spend millions creating new components; these are the "sunk costs" of design implementation. Consequently, it is imperative that the new chip function in full and perfect compliance to its specification, and be delivered to the market within tight consumer windows. Even a delay of a few weeks can cost tens of millions of dollars. Post-silicon validation is therefore one of the most highly leveraged steps in successful design implementation. ... Read more

Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Delrina was a Canadian software company founded in Toronto in 1988 and acquired by the American software firm Symantec in 1995. Delrina's business strategy was to "establish technical and market leadership in niche markets", which it accomplished with its electronic form and PC-based fax software. Delrina's electronic form products included PerForm and FormFlow, but it was best-known for its WinFax software package. WinFax enabled computers equipped with fax-modems to transmit faxes to standalone fax machines or other similarly equipped computers. Delrina also produced a set of popular screensavers, including one that resulted in a well-publicized lawsuit for copyright and trademark infringement (Berkeley Systems Inc. v. Delrina). The case set a precedent in American law whereby satiric commercial software products are not subject to the same First Amendment exemptions as parodic cartoons or literature. The firm grew steadily over the course of the early 1990s, with revenues from WinFax amounting to 80% of the company's revenues. It attempted to diversify into other areas such with online communications software with its WinComm product and produced a Web browser called Cyberjack that ultimately could not compete effectively in the emerging browser wars. The firm was sold to Symantec in 1995. After the company was acquired by Symantec, various divisions were sold off and several of Delrina's former executives went on to found venture capital firms. Early corporate logo for Delrina, circa 1988Delrina was founded in Toronto in 1988 by Zimbabwean expatriate Bert Amato, South African expatriates Mark Skapinker and Dennis Bennie along with American Lou Ryan. Product Description
A microcontroller (also microcontroller unit, MCU or µC) is a small computer on a single integrated circuit consisting of a relatively simple CPU combined with support functions such as a crystal oscillator, timers, watchdog timer, serial and analog I/O etc. Program memory in the form of NOR flash or OTP ROM is also often included on chip, as well as a typically small amount of RAM. Microcontrollers are designed for small or dedicated applications. Thus, in contrast to the microprocessors used in personal computers and other high-performance or general purpose applications, simplicity is emphasized. Some microcontrollers may operate at clock rate frequencies as low as 4 kHz, as this is adequate for many typical applications, enabling low power consumption (milliwatts or microwatts). They will generally have the ability to retain functionality while waiting for an event such as a button press or other interrupt; power consumption while sleeping (CPU clock and most peripherals off) may be just nanowatts, making many of them well suited for long lasting battery applications. ... Read more

Excerpt: Application virtualization is an umbrella term that describes software technologies that improve portability, manageability and compatibility of applications by encapsulating them from the underlying operating system on which they are executed. A fully virtualized application is not installed in the traditional sense, although it is still executed as if it were. The application is fooled at runtime into believing that it is directly interfacing with the original operating system and all the resources managed by it, when in reality it is not. In this context, the term "virtualization" refers to the artifact being encapsulated (application), which is quite different to its meaning in hardware virtualization, where it refers to the artifact being abstracted (physical hardware). Limited application virtualization is used in modern operating systems such as Microsoft Windows and Linux. For example, IniFileMappings were introduced with Windows NT to virtualize (into the Registry) the legacy INI files of applications originally written for Windows 3.1. Similarly, Windows Vista implements limited file and Registry virtualization so that legacy applications that try to save user data in a system location that was writeable in older versions of Windows, but is now only writeable by highly privileged system software, can work on the new Windows system without the obligation of the program having higher-level security privileges (which would carry security risks). Full application virtualization requires a virtualization layer. Application virtualization layers replace part of the runtime environmen...http://booksllc.net/?id=5299251 ... Read more
