3-0 out of 5 stars More likely a handbook
The author put a lot of "facts" in this book. However, there are few explanation and no references. He describes many detail specifications that makes this book read as more likely a handbook. It's so easy to find out the differeces if we compare it with Tananbaum's or Stallings' computer network books, the laters are written in a teaching oriented form that readers are guided to understand basic theory and architecture. And of course, there are numerous references for both students and instructors to find out where those contents are originally from, or what to read for further studies. The lack of refernce is a big drawback for Carne's book. It's really abnormal. No matter if I were the instructor or the student I won't pick this book for textbook or self-learning. Even if I need handbook for reference, I'll choose either Freeman's books or just get a Newton's Telecom Dictionary for fast check. By the way, the graphs in the book are really rought and ugly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what the name implies
I had to come up to speed on the current telecom technology now. This bookanswered my needs with a thorough intro to the latest technologiesincluding (gasp!) clear illustrations and enough detail to conveyunderstanding without drowning me in arcane details. The glossary isespecially well done.It is not a simple minded survey leaving out theimportant details; instead it provides clear definitions and directs thereader who needs more info with useful references.

It is indeed aprimer. If you need all the hideous (glorious?) details, get Freeman'smagnum opus.

5-0 out of 5 stars PRIMER ++
I have looked at many books that cover a wide variety of topics in telecom but didn't find one that covered everything and gave functional details.Digital Telephony (by Bellamy) is good if you are solving differential calculas problems and it still does not give enough details (functionalengineering wise).

The title says PRIMER but it is a good detailedreference also and illustartions and diagrams are very helpful.I amwriting as a telecom software developer ofcourse. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended book
Security in networks is an important aspect. This book provides
a substantial and up-to-date overview about this topic.
In the first part of this book the mathematical background of
cryptography is described in detail. In addition, all important
cryptographical mechanisms and methods including the
generation of secure random numbers are clearly described.
The focus of the second part of this book is on the application
of cryptographical mechanisms in today's wide-area networks.
Protocols like PPP, IPSec, and SSH as well as the properties
and functionalities of VPNs and firewalls are described in
detail.
Finally, the third part of this book considers security aspects
in modern wireless / mobile local and global networks
like WLAN, GSM, and UMTS.
This book is designed as a textbook. But due to its clear and
elaborated structure it can be also used as a reference book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I found the section in this book on LMI to be very useful
This is the only book I was able to find that hada section on LMI that was over 2 pages in length.( The section on LMI in this book is 16 pages long ).I have not used this book for any purpose other than studyingLMI.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book on Frame Relay
The book is in two parts and each addresses Frame-Relay in a different way.The first part is a largely non-technical introduction to the subject. If you want to know what Frame-Relay is, why it is the way that itis, what it is meant to be used for and how it might fit into a networkingsystem, then you will get all of that here.

The second part is atechnical description of the protocol. It goes intoenough detail to allowyou not just to understand the protocol but, if you have the coding anddesign skills, to write your own F-R stack and get it interworking withother networks.

I did that using this book as my reference. In the courseof that work, I spotted one small error in the book. One bit in theFrame-Relay header field is mis-described but apart from that, it was agreat help.

Not only is the technical content spot on but it is wellpresented. The layout and diagrams make sense and the English is clear andreadable.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very good, but needs to be updated.
This book will give you a good understanding of why and how Frame Relay appeared, where are its strong and weak points and how does it work inside, as well as sound criteria for implementation. However, since 1993 manythings have happened, and the book needs to be updated. Frame is comparedto X.25, which is almost extinct, and very little is said about Frame vs.ATM, which is now a mature technology. A more recent version would havedeserved 5 stars.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good to have if you need concise FR data
A little, dinky, expensive hardcover which is pure, low-level data on the topic. Good to have if you need it. Better to complement it with a high-level book which explains the technology in a more mentally digestableformat. ... Read more
