5-0 out of 5 stars The First Networking Book I owned
This was the first networking book I bought when I was still in school. The book is good and helped me setup my first network at home. I am writing my review today even though they already moved up two more editions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the Newbee
I had to get this book because of college. It is a great book for anyone trying to understand basic concepts. It is very easy reading and keeps you interested.I would not recommend it for anyone who has a good understanding of communcations and networking.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent but Outdated
The layout of this book could have used some work, and I understand the later editions do a better job, but it nevertheless provided a foundation of networking and datacomm principles. The material is out of date, so since there is a newer edition out, I would recommend it over this edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is my 2nd review...
Well, I must confess...I wrote my first review BEFORE reading any other reviews.Wow - after reading the others, I started thinking "I MUST HAVE BEEN READING A DIFFERENT BOOK!"Well, that is exactly the story. My review is of the 7th edition and I specifically went looking for the grammatical errors and the packet-switching complaints and all the other complaints, one-by-one.You know what?HOOEY!!All the problems others speak of in the 6th edition have been corrected and improved upon! This is a good book!I liked Mr. Nagle's review and the only negatives he mentions were mere weaknesses that have been beefed up. So, I still say this is a book that you'll find useful if you read it.If you want to peruse it, looking for tips and tricks on setting up your own network, then I say this is NOT the book for you - I'd look for the networking for dummies.(I'm not trying to be flipant, either. Those books only have the tips of the icebergs and are great for perusing - kinda like a cliff's notes.)

I say you will like the improvements over whatever the 6th edition missed (or messed up).

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!!If you buy one book, make it this one!!
I just finished a graduate course using this book as the textbook. At first I thought "Hmmmph - another OSI Layer book."What I learned is that it is very current, going into Blue tooth, Internet II, and all the latest Wireless protocols, too.Like consider the multiple Gigabit networking architectures, including optical and copper. This is "one for the shelf" of every do it your selfer wanting to learn and it reads like a "how to" manual that you'll use.Whether you want to learn, bone up, or be the one who has all the right vocabulary at the drinking fountain - this is a book you should give a chance to.It surprised me and I manage a significant IS dept.I think you will consider it a value-added addition to your library! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for Beginner!!
First, i must thank the author who wrote this book is very helpful when i encountered a problem from this book, i e-mail to him.

Some of my background, i'm a student studying at "Informatics", an IT college in which a guidance recommends to read this book for the CS course. I used this book and got A grade for the Networking module.

This book is well-written and easy to understand and to learn in a manner. Although you might not read whole chapters in this book because it covers many different kind of topics in relation to computer network and the flow of data in a variety of network environments. It also gives you a basis of networking concept including the most updated networking technologies and the techniques, such as "Internet 2, IPv6, Switching, and Encryption," used nowadays. It is designed for those who are now studying year 1 or even year 2 at university or planning to excel or now working in IT industry. That's why it designated "A Business User's Approach"

Because of the book is to be designed for different kind of people, therefore you might just want to read some of which chapters are helpful based on what and where of your uses, situations, and backgrounds, etc... You just need to follow your learning pace on your studies or your jobs. Random reading in this book is further the way in which helps you to understand deeply and to apply.

To sum up, i think it will not be disappointed to you.
That's all my own opinions. Those who have any opinions are welcome to give a review to my views for this book. Thank you!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book! Excellent Condition!
The delivery was quick, communication with the seller was very easy! Everything worked as well as I had hoped. This is a classic story of everything going right with Amazon. No complaints what so ever!

2-0 out of 5 stars Confusing and Incorrect
I puchased this book, in addition to many other telecom books and found this to be one of the worst ones. Not only is the information useless it is written in a diffucult to understand fashion.I recommend that you do not waste corporate money of this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Grade A Content, C for Delivery
I'm new to telecom and bought this book to get up to speed.I must say first and foremost that I am getting up to speed.

But right after that I have to say that I can't read more than 10 pages in a row without finding a glaring error. For example, the term "jitter" is defined twice in two pages. Why?Plenty of typos, some of the illustrations look like the postscript monster ate them, and the 1,000 pages could easily be condensed to 500-600 by getting rid of redundancy.

For example, the difference between analog amplifiers and digital repeaters is defined around 5 times in the first 300 pages (with more or less the same illustration at least two of those times). So, yeah, I get the concept now and couldn't forget it if I wanted to, but I didn't need to be told so many times.

All that said, if I would recommend this book to anyone new to telecom, but advise them to be gentle critics or keep their red pens handy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Keep looking for "the" one-stop, comprehensive telecom book
I am a senior engineer for network security operations.I bought "Voice and Data Communications Handbook, Fourth Edition" (VADCH:4E) to gain a general understanding of communications technologies beyond the LAN.Although the book mentions all of the systems which interested me, I was not satisfied with the manner in which they were covered.VADCH:4E is better than Ross' "Telecommunications Technologies" but inferior to Green's "Irwin Handbook of Telecommunications."Nevertheless, I'm still looking for an author who delivers the goods on voice and data communications essentials.

VADCH:4E's table of contents is sure to impress; it mentions T carriers, VPNs, X.25, Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI, SMDS, Frame Relay, ISDN, ATM, DSL, SS7, LNP, Cellular/PCS, WAP, 3G Wireless, SONET/SDH, and other key telecom systems and concepts.Unfortunately, I rarely finished a chapter with a good grasp of the material.I desperately searched for clues to questions I felt were key to understanding each technology.Rather than launching into an extended discussion of each system, I would have preferred hearing exactly how each technology works, with comparison to other technologies.More is not better if the "more" isn't helpful!

VADCH:4E is advertised as being "straightforward and jargon-free."This approach supposedly appeals to management types. In reality, the book swings wildly from mind-numbing grade-school-level analogies to material only understood with outside references.A 1074 page book needs to pick a writing style and stay the course.Otherwise, it alienates both nontechnical and technical readers.(Incidentally, technical readers may wonder why the authors believe Windows screen savers contribute to LAN traffic; see page 674 to read this odd claim.)

On a positive note, VADCH:4E consistently offered useful information on the history and business rationale for many telecom systems. Many of the connectivity diagrams were excellent.(These were usually offset by cheesy "clip-art" type graphics elsewhere, unfortunately.)VADCH:4E also includes descriptions of the framing formats for most telecom transmission systems.

Overall, I don't recommend reading a book this large if it doesn't answer the key questions I expect readers to ask. While I'm more familiar with telecom basics after reading VADCH:4E, I still hope another book makes more sense of the telecommunications environment.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst College Book of all time
Ok well it may not be the worst book that I have used for college but it is on my top 5 list.I hate this book!!!The chapters are long.It uses to many acronyms.I hate having to go to a previous chapter just to find out what IEC stands for.But the worst thing of all is the chapter questions. You really have to search for the answer. The questions do not go in order with the chapter making it a very time consuming task to answer the questions (especially when you have 10 other chapters to complete in one day).Come on make it easier on us college students, we have enough to do already.I guess this book could be alot worse but it also could be alot better. Its very hard to stay awake when reading this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
If you want to really learn and understand the world of telecommunications and data communications this book is a must read.Written in plain English, Horak's book is equally useful to the uninitiated and professional alike. In 15 chapters and two appendices spanning 762 pages, Horak has created a complete course of instruction that would cost the reader thousands of dollars to attend if it were offered live. The depth and breadth of information contained in this single volume is unmatched by other books I've read.Equally important is the use of plain English and Horak's writing style making this book eminently readable.

Horak has created a full course in a single book that will give the reader more overall knowledge of telecommunications and data communications than most practitioners working in the field today. In my years in this field I have not been more impressed by a single publication.I enthusiastically recommend this book to all who want to better understand this industry: be they students, professionals, or merely interested.

Jeff Owen is an independent consultant with 20+ years experience in telecommunications/networking and IT. He has worked in engineering, project management, and management positions for major corporations in the telecommunications, finance, aerospace, and IT consultancy industries. 5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive, yet readable guide to Telecom technologies
The "Telecommunications and Data Communications Handbook" by Ray Horak provides a detailed tour of electronic and optical communications technology, from basic principles to the latest telephone, cellular, internet, and satellite-based standards.Rather than just explaining how these technologies function (which Horak does well with his characteristically engaging prose), this Handbook also illuminates the historical contexts of new standards and technologies, exploring economic pressures, social drives, and political considerations influencing their development. This volume is a must-have for both the student and working professional. An excellent companion reference for this book is Horak's "Webster's New World Telecom Dictionary".

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the Internet!
Telecommunications and Data Communications Handbook contains fifteen chapters and covers a wide variety of topics. The book can be recommended for different audiences, starting from students, which decided to become Electrical Engineers, as well as for engineers and managers, and technicians who need always to have a reliable source of information. It is a timely encyclopedic work and will remain so for many years! It also is a perfect companion to Horak's other excellent work, Webster's New World Telecom Dictionary, also published by Wiley in 2007.

Horak is an independent telecom consultant. He is active in litigation support as a consulting expert and testifying expert, often in cases involving intellectual property such as patent, copyright, and trademark and service infringement. He has authored five telecom books and written of hundreds of technical articles, white papers, case studies, and solution briefs.

Vladimir Kaminsky, PhD is a President of Practel, Inc, a consulting company that is specializing in advanced communications technologies and network design.

5-0 out of 5 stars Telecommunications and Data Communications Handbook
Telecommunications and Data Communications Handbook
"Telecommunications and Data Communications Handbook" is a great building block to Ray's previous book, "Communications Systems and Networks". I have been in the Telecom industry for over 30 years and have used "Communications Systems and Networks" since it was published in 1997. I had also provided each management employee that has been in my organization with a copy of "Communications Systems and Networks" and am in the process of providing "Telecommunications and Data Communications Handbook" to each employee. The book has been a valuable resource to me in every aspect of the various positions I have held and it will benefit any Telecom professional.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Reference Manual for Telecommunications
Ray Horak's "Telecommunications and Data Communications Handbook" is a definitive reference manual for all types of computer, telecom and data communications networks, devices and models. What impresses most is the fact that this book takes the most important elements and concepts from both telecom and datacom and squeezes them into one reference. I have dozens of books in my telecommunications library and I'd happily trade in most of them for this single reference. The second thing that impresses is the no-nonsense style in which it is written. I expected no less from Ray, whom I have worked with over the years on numerous educational projects including face-to-face workshops, and conference tutorials for over a decade. His straightforward and easy-to-understand approach is powerful and effective both in person and in print. If you had but one book to buy on networking and communications, this would be it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand practical explanation of networking
This book was easy to read and explained how a data network operates.

1-0 out of 5 stars Where are the Exericise Solutions?
This book explains things fairly well.I would have rated it a 3 or 4, but they forgot the most important thing: THE SOLUTIONS TO THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS!!!!!Where are they???Without the solutions to the practice problems a technical textbook is pretty much useless!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for beginners
Here's and excellent book for anyone who wants to learn about data communication and network systems. It uses an easy to understand language and gradually introduces a new topic. It touches all aspects of transmission modes and protocol concepts but if you want to study the seven OSI layers a better book would be Computer Networks by tanenbaum.Still a good book for beginners of the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best online sales experience I've ever had.
Excellent purchase ! I ordered the book and I received promptly after 3 days of purchased through amazon.com. and is in excellent condition. I would recommend this seller.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the better books I have ever read!
This book, though based on some older technologies, is truly exceptional. Before reading this book I practically knew nothing about telecommunications and data communications.I now understand everything from how the public phone system works to the OSI model to how bits of data are sent over a fiber optic line.

I say this book is based on many older technologies because it is.It talks about modulation and demodulation, and at this point in time I think we are quite a ways from 14.4 modems - which were huge in the 90's, just not so much anymore. However, even though this technology is getting quite old, the concepts are still in use today and it is an important part of understanding data communications.

If you think you might be interested in knowing how any of the following work, then this book is definitely for you:PBX's, DSL, Multiplexing, Networking (WAN and LAN), Protocols, Bits and Bytes, Wireless, Data Security, OSI model, Public Network, Fiber Optics, Modems, Protocols...The list goes on and on.There is so much in this book, that you can't help but feel enlightened after reading it!

The one complaint I can see people having with this book is there is too much information. It simply covers so many different aspects of computing that you might feel overwhelmed. This did not bother me at all, but it is something to keep in mind.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for Engineers or anyone with a technical background
This book covers all the major topics in data communications but does soin a very simplistic manner that barely scratches the surface of any of thetopics covered.Of course the breadth of the book is so wide that it wouldnot be possible to cover even a fraction of the topics in any detail.Theback of the book says that it is a suitable book for those with a technicalbackground and that the 'shaded areas' go into more technical detail.Ifound the shaded areas to be just as elementary as the rest of the book, and in many cases doesn't tell the full story. This is a good book if youonly want an introduction to telecomm topics, or want a dictionary oftelecomm acronyms. It is fairly well written and has some very simplisticanalogies for those who might need plain english illustrations of telecommconcepts. The reason I'm giving it a low rating is because I feel thepublisher/author is trying to sell this to a technical audience, which Istrongly feel it is not suitable for.But if you know nothing about volts, bytes, bits, baud, hertz, etc... then this would be a goodplace to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bps or Baud Rate? What's the difference?
Excellent first reference on networks. Definitions are well defined, and new terms are highlighted. Author uses easy to understand analogies to describe complex concepts. Good for novice to intermediate student.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for anybody who wants a thorough intro to the subject
An amazingly well organized and readable introductory book for anybody who is curious about the telecom/datacom infrastructure.I highly recommend this as the first primer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Comprehensive
This is one of the best organized handbooks that I have run across for telecommunication and IT specialists. It has everything that you would ever need at your fingertips. It covers everything from POTS to broadband, and even delves into video communications.Formulas? This handbook has 'em....Charts?They're in there...Need to know the exact bandwidth of an OC-192 line? It's just a flip away.Pinouts? It even had a hard to find pinout for a 6MMJ...I looked everywhere for that pinout!

No self-respecting IT or COMM specialist should go anywhere without this in their back pocket...It's only 20bux to boot!

I know I sound like a commercial, but I was THAT impressed with this handbook.I normally never write reviews. This handbook warranted it.It's definately going to make the IT or COMM specialist more productive, as it will save a TON of time in research.

Kudos to Paul Rosenburg, et. al.

3-0 out of 5 stars Applied Data Communications book review
This book is a required text for a master's class I am taking. The content is very good and germane to the subject of data communications, but is well dated. Both the book and the associated case studies refer to the technology of the early 2000s.While the basics of technology remain the same, the content should be updated given the price of the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible
I wouldn't even give a zero to this book, it is simply the worst book I have used and definitely outdated. Just can't understand why would a college use the old book horrible written. Nothing make sense, the back index is horrible - one cannot find what is needed, the definitions, everything is all over the place... Shouldn't even cost a cent...Horrible

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Supplemental Information
This book was selected as a part of my graduate program at Johns Hopkins University. While the course didn't rely heavily on the book, it was an excellent resource for supplemental information to the class lectures. On numerous occasions I would make notes in class regarding a particular technology or protocol that was listed in the lecture and I could locate the information very easily in the book. You really can't ask for more and I would definitely recommend reading this book and then making a good place on the shelf for further use.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative
Taking into consideration that this is a text book and I've only gotten through the first 3 chapters I find it a very informative, in-depth, and readable book. The information is provided in a manner that the average, non-computer, person can understand and absorb.I am an older adult returning to school after 20 years. It is hard to retain almost anything these days but this text makes it easier than most.I won't say its easy, that is a matter of personal opinion, but easier in the sense that you can read a section and still realize that you understand what it is you just read and that it flowed smoothly from the previous section; incorporating previously stated ideas and information while addressing new ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Pick

3-0 out of 5 stars A regular book
This book is reasonable but has a lot of defects. I list two I consider more annoying:1) It was carelessly edited. For example on page 94 there is an incomprehensible formula. Another example is that the concept of Baud is not in the index. It is defined on page 1382) It is not very deep. For example, on page 199 it is said that Shannon formula (presented on page 115) is a limitation on the number of Bauds that can be transmitted. This is wrong and I suggest that the reader that want to learn about Shannon theory either to read the book by John R. Pierce, An introduction to information theory or see page 200 (mainly figure 5.21) of the book Understanding Information Transmission by J.B. Anderson and R. Johannesson.

2-0 out of 5 stars too easy, yet too complicated....
This book doesnt not provide practical knowledge to the reader. It is way too easy for reader who want to find out more in particular topics such as networking, WLAN, or even just RS232. Oftenly, the author just list out many standards(which many are not common in the industry or even obsolute), and without further elaboration on how to use it. In other word, it is lack of practical usefulness.

In contrast, I think it is too complicated to beginner. The author is greedy to put in wide range of topics, and cover some detail on hardware, electronics, information theory, compression etc which are in the area of telecommunication engineering. Therefore, in every chapter, you will need to go through the history development of some basic electrical theory, information theory, hardware implementation, and many protocols. Often, after I have spent time understanding a particular protocol, then later was told that it was not used anymore and it has been be replaced by another protocol.

In conclusion, I think it is more appropriate to use this book as a reference. You want to know some basic knowledge on certain topic, just find the particular pages from the content, and jump to it. Don't read this book from the begining to the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-written book
This book was very understandable. Gilbert Held presents his information very well. I did find several typos, but that's a minor quibble.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Intro Text
I review many technical books in the fields of telephony and data communications every year, and I found this book to be a great Intro text.It covers data communications concepts from the beginning, providingreaders with a solid base of knowledge.

I use this book in some of thedata communications classes I teach, and can easily recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars This is a beginners intro book.
I was hoping for something a little more detailed and technical. It is a good overview of the various technologies out there but not reference material. It is prticularly weak on the following topics, RS232, T1, V.35. ... Read more

Product Description
Today's increased use of digital sound and video makes data compression crucial to computer technology because of its vast storage and transmission requirements. The question in many applications is now not whether to compress data, but what compression method should be applied. Most data compression books have been written for professionals and require a strong background in data compression techniques as well as an understanding of algorithms based on sophisticated mathematical models. This book is one of a handful of textbooks to present Data Compression for students in an academic environment. This is not a simple task since most of the widely used algorithms rely on sophisticated mathematical models. ELEMENTS OF DATA COMPRESSION addresses the needs of students who will use these techniques on a daily basis. The author accomplishes this through the use of elementary-level representative methods of text, audio, and video compression. Drozdek presents these methods with pseudocode, tables, diagrams, and many worked out examples, all the while employing commonly used techniques that build upon the mathematics students have been exposed to in earlier courses. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars concise, precise and easy. What's not to like?
I really really loved this book.

I'm a self-taught programmer, and this book is one of the easiest introductions to the subject. The language is simple, the examples are clear and unhurried, and the important topics are covered. In fact, I understood basic concepts of information theory here for the first time. For example, while everybody else says "the information content of a random variable is \sigma(P_i log(P_i))", this books takes a couple of pages to explain the intuition behind this formula.

For the fact that this is a concise guide, it packs quite a bit of information, from LZW, Huffman, zip, arithmetic coding, wavelets, jpeg and audio compression (just to pick a few). The best way to read this book is to have a calculator handy, and to hand-do the examples from the description of the algorithm _before_ you read the solution.

This is a keeper.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very hard to follow text book
The author doesn't see fit to show the inputs and the outputs of each of the processes.

A terrible example is LZW.We know there is a processed buffer and a look-ahead buffer. We don't know the step-by-step process. ... Read more

Product Description
Appropriate for all introductory-to-intermediate courses in networking, telecommunications, or data communications. This book combines a thorough introduction to data communications and networking theory with a practical, "how-to" approach that enables students to apply the theory in real world environments. The text is organized into five logically-related parts, helping students discover how a data communications infrastructure builds from standards, to protocols, to working networks designed to solve a wide variety of business problems. Allen Dooley begins with fundamental concepts such as OSI and TCP/IP layered modeling and standards, as well as essential physical and data link layer details. He next turns to local area networking, introducing components, design considerations, topologies, logical IP addressing/subnetting, and network and application layer services. In Part III, he explains backbone, metropolitan, and wide area networks, covering topics ranging from Gigabit Ethernet to Backbone architectures, frame relay and ATM to DSL.Dooley then shows students how networking models, standards, protocols, devices, and other network elements can be integrated into a total total enterprise solution. In so doing, he addresses a wide range of technologies, from servers and storage area networks to VPNs, VoIP, firewalls, and encryption. Many topics are taught in the context of a running business case study. The book concludes with a preview of emerging network trends and technologies, addressing convergence, wireless, IPv6, and especially careers for data communications and networking professionals. Every chapter contains an Ethical Perspective section asking students to reflect on the ethical issues associated with the topics that have been covered. To support effective learning, Dooley provides learning objectives and detailed summaries, keyword highlighting, questions, exercises, and more. ... Read more
