Product Description
Beneath the coastal waters of the world lie thousands of artificial reefs. Some are old and retired freighters and ships that once plied the oceans of the world but now serve as habitats for marine life. Others are newer reefs that have been designed and built for specific applications. With the field of aquatic habitat technology continually growing, this book responds to the global need for a compendium of consistent and reliable practices with which to evaluate how well artificial reefs meet their objectives.Artificial Reef Evaluation With Application to Natural Marine Habitats is a comprehensive guide to the methods used to document the performance of artificial reefs in coastal and oceanic waters. It is the first volume to combine the essential disciplines required for proper evaluation, including engineering, economics, biology, and statistics. This work covers the design of reef studies, multi-disciplinary methods of investigation, data analysis, and examples of applying the methods to reefs built for different purposes. Further, the methods examined in this book apply to other benthic marine habitats, such as coral reefs or "live bottoms", thus expanding the book's relevance to a wider audience and enhancing research efforts in the field of artificial habitat technology. ... Product Description
Spatiotemporal models are emerging as a very important topic in several disciplines, including neurobiology and artificial neural networks. Many hard problems exist in this area. Examples include understanding the capabilities of nonlinear dynamical systems on a lattice and of networks of spiking neurons (both natural and artificial), training such systems, implementing them in hardware, understanding biological signals like the EEG, etc. Besides the state-of-the-art in the area of spatiotemporal models, the book also covers the neurobiological, and the artificial systems communities. ... Product Description
This is the second volume in a series intended to give clear expositions of the applications of the new techniques developed to understand nonlinear phenomena in the life sciences. The first paper by West, Mackey and Chen is methodological in nature and reviews how to distinguish between noise in biomedical data sets and irregularities generated by deterministic dynamical equations. The second paper by Hock, Schoner, Balz, Eastman and Voss addresses the problem of pattern formation and pattern change in the vision system. The premise of this research is that our understanding of visual pattern formation can be furthered using the theoretical concepts and associated experimental methods borrowed from nonlinear dynamics, stochastic processes and the theory of pattern formation. The authors emphasize the experimental correspondence between quantifiable perceptual phenomena and certain features of nonlinear dynamical systems theory. The paper by Chay focuses on modelling strategies for biological phenomena that manifest strong nonlinear behaviour.Biological rhythms and electrical bursting phenomena are discussed in detail, and certain apparently random processes are shown to be describable by chaos. The final paper is an attempt by Nicolis and Katsikas to use nonlinear dynamics systems theory to develop a general theory of linguistics. The concepts of information and pattern recognition are used in concert with that of a dynamic attractor to argue for the general properties of a cognitive processor. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
An excellent discussion on what life is, evolution, and how it all may apply to computer viruses and what we may learn from them.I would recommend all books on computer viruses by Dr. Ludwig.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
A great discussion of evolution - the author takes us through the basics of evolution, and the arguments for and against it, and how this all might apply to computer viruses. Also has an interesting virus designed toemulate Darwinian evolution.

1-0 out of 5 stars I wanna be like you (Hackers)

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent study of the basis of evolution
Have you ever wondered if the theory if evolution is true? Evolution has passed into scientific doctrine, not because there is overwhelming evidence, but simply because there is no alternative. And yet, evolution seems to propose the impossible, that life could spontaneously appear from the random interaction of chemicals, and that the simplest single celled organism could, through mutation, transform itself into something as astoundingly complex as a human being. This book examines evolution using powerful new insights gained from the study of computer viruses and other artifical life programs. Computer viruses reproduce, mutate, are killed, become extinct, or prospher in much the same way as organic live forms. This book does not propose any alternative theory to evolution. It does, however, confront the reader with some impossible aspects of its fundamental principles. Even if we don't have any alternative but to believe in evolution, we should still approach that belief with all the caution we would give a theory that had many viable alternatives. ... Read more

Excerpt: Core War (or Core Wars) is a programming game in which two or more battle programs (called "warriors") compete for the control of the "Memory Array Redcode Simulator" virtual computer ("MARS"). These battle programs are written in an abstract assembly language called Redcode. The object of the game is to cause all processes of the opposing program(s) to terminate, leaving your program in sole possession of the machine. Core War was inspired by a program called Creeper (Creeper_virus) and a subsequent program called Reaper that destroyed copies of Creeper. As described by Shoch and Hupp (CACM, vol. 25, no. 3, 1982) from PARC, Creeper was created by B. Thomas at BBN. Dewdney was not aware of the origin of Creeper and Reaper and refers to them as a rumor originating from the Darwin game and the worm experiments of Shoch and Hupp. The 1984 Scientific American article on Core War nonetheless cites the game Darwin, written by Victor A. Vyssotsky, Robert Morris Sr., and M. Douglas McIlroy at the Bell Labs in the 1960s. The word "Core" in the name comes from magnetic core memory, an obsolete random access memory technology. The same usage may be seen in other computer jargon terms such as "core dump". The first description of the Redcode language was published in March 1984, in Core War Guidelines by D. G. Jones and A. K. Dewdney. The game was introduced to the public in May 1984, in an article written by Dewdney in Scientific American. Dewdney revisited Core War in his "Computer Recreations" column in March 1985, and again in January 1987. The International Core Wars Society (ICWS) was founded in 1985, on...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=274362 ... Read more

Product Description
This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSONAFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A855163. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The retention of skilled pilots continues to be a problem that plagues the United States Air Force. After spending millions of dollars on training and education, it is disheartening to see the mass exodus of experienced aviators from the Air Force that has been occurring in the past decade. Many blame the economy, others the Air Force itself but few are able to accurately predict how or why they are all leaving. The current personnel models do not adequately determine retention rates. Complex adaptive systems theory, however, might provide some insight. By modeling the system at the pilot's level, allowing each pilot to be represented as an autonomous, independent agent continually adapting to its environment and the other agents in it, an alternate model can be built; one that accounts for the interactions among the pilots, not just their interactions with their environment. PICAS (Pilot Inventory Complex Adaptive System) is just such a model. Constructed in the Java language, the PICAS model exploits the notions of complex adaptive systems theory and employs dynamic user controls to discern retention rates. Pilots 'evolve', for lack of a better word, to a greater fitness within their environment, and in the process the model user can better determine what kind of environment needs to be created and maintained in order to ensure that trained and experienced pilots are in fact retained for their services. ...
