4-0 out of 5 stars Only Book used to pass 220 exam
I bought this book & yes it is quite a long read, it did give alot of background info in rolling / upgrading a secure windows 2000 network, but the information to pass the 70-220 exam is in there & thats the main thing.
Maybe if I was in I.T. to just pass exams I'd have chosen to get the MS Book, but I do love my Cappuccino's.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a waste of good trees
Somewhere in this book there may be the information necessary to take the MCSE Security Exam 70-220.I couldn't find it, maybe you can.The author rants on about coffee shops and lakes of Minnesota, doing his best to be like Garrison Keillor telling the "Tales of Lake Wobegon", which may be entertaining in a detached way, but has absolutely no place in a test prep manual.

He is also obsessed with a book written by Bill Gates, and works it into his presented lessons, when even Microsoft doesn't try to make the Gate's book into an MCSE issue.

Clearly the author has lost the sense of mission in this manual, which is to help you get through the test, not entertain you (actually, I'm not sure the author actually entertains anyone except himself).

If you want to pass the test, stick with the Microsoft dull, boring training manual which actually has the info you need to pass the test.

This book was just a waste of money to me, it's too big to even hold up the leg of a wobbley table well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good overall, but lot of extraneous material
The book does indeed cover every objective of the 70-220 Microsoft exam. However, more than half of the book is, or at least seems, irrelevant to the topic of the book.First 6 chapters all discuss the types of company models, management methodologies, risk analysis, analysis of current infrastructure, requiremenets analysis, and so on.Indeed, all of these do apply to how security would be designed for a network, but frankly, most technical readers would tire out reading 300 pages of business material (types of managements, types of companies, risk management analysis, etc).

I do think that all of this stuff was necessary in the book, but not with the length that it has.It should have been dealt with more succintly.

All in all, a good overall book, but for the purposes of the exam, I wouldn't choose this book

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Solid material for a strong foundation
I liked this book because it is pretty well explained and gave me a solid foundation to understand more about how to design Network Security for Windows 2000. I say it is a must for anyone seriously wanting to grasp a strong foundation in Windows 2000 Network Security. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This book help me to get start on ISA 2004
A lot of information cover in this book which could help me to get start and master ISA 2004. However, you need to have the knowledge of 70-290, 70-291 and Exchange server 2003 (70-284). You need to have a lot of stuff to complete this book (PC, server, internet connection, relevant software).

The only disaapoint thing of this book is it not include ISA 2004 Enterprise edition for its last chapter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Study Material
I used this book (ISA 2004) as the primary material to study for the Isa 2006 70-351 Exam.

It more than covers the foundations of ISA Server and with some time spent on MS.com researching ISA 2006 enhancements is all that was required.

I am becoming a huge fan of the MS Press books and this one is no exception.

Perhaps a little more focus on Enterprise rather than the single chapter would be good as there are a few Enterprise questions in the exam, but still that takes nothing away from this text.

5 Stars!

4-0 out of 5 stars MCSA/MCSE Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-350):
The writing style is somewhat dry.

The enclosed software (ISA server 120 day evaluation) and the computerized test questions make the book worth the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book.
This book does not base itself in only Microsoft scenario, it covers networks and security in a wide context.
Well written, gives you the ability to deploy and understand the ISA SERVER, which by itself is an excelent software, and the environments which your are deploy in.
You don't need to be an expert in IT to comprehend this book, but need to know a little about protocols and TCP/IP.
Who buys it can enjoy a good travel through the network boundaries world.
I didn't rate it 5 for 2 reasons. First, the book says, sometimes, you have got an enterprise isa cd, but you have got the standard one.
The author, sometimes, endeavours so much in assuring your understandable of the subject that spend a few pages morethan needed. Another drawback is the excess of "plan, analyse, get information" advices. It becomes repetitive through the pages.
Well, that is it, a good book and enough to pass the certification exam by yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars MS Security
Very nice book , I recommended it for all specialist in Microsoft networking, and systems. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy it.It's a waste of money.
I won't fault this book for it's outdated content. That would be assumed if you're using a 5 year old book to prepare for an always-being-updated test. I will just say that I took the test a few days ago and only 2 of the practice questions in this book were on the test. Most of the questions on the test dealt with topics that were never even covered in this book.Surely there must be a better and more relevant book.

The book also has a problem with typos. The typos are not just annoying, but also confusing. In most cases, the typos were not related to misspellings, but rather wrong answers.

Staying on the topic of answers, the book claims to have over 500 questions with "detailed" answers. What they mean by detailed, is that they add the words "You need to" at the beginning of the answer, and "in order for it to work" at the end of the answer which forms a complete sentence or "detailed" answer. For example, if one of the choices for a question is:
A. Enable third party cookies
Then the "detailed" answer would be "The correct answer is A:You need to enable third party cookies in order for it to work."

You're just repeating it back! How the hell is that a detailed answer!?Granted, most of the time when the book pulled this stunt, it was on a very easy question.

I bought this book because at the time it was the most recommended companion study book by Amazon customers.I want to throw my review into the bunch and say that it's a waste of your money - Don't buy it!

I also wanted to say that this book was supposed to come with a Cram Sheet Tear Card, which is an "Easy-to-handle item that condenses all the necessary facts found in the exam".My book did not come with one and it doesn't look like there was ever a place that held one.I actually would have liked one of those, although it probably would have been just as irrelevant as the rest of the book.

The only good thing about this purchase is that it contains a PDF copy of the entire book on the included CD.For some reason, this is not even advertised. The book is no longer relevant however, so it really doesn't matter.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money, helped me pass
This book is worth at least twice the listed Amazon price. Not only does it have a LOT of 70-270 Prep Questions, all of those questions are included on the CD and delivered via the MeasureUp engine.

I used this book, the FastPass and lots of hands on to pass the 70-270 exam on my first try.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, not great
There are too many easy questions, many errors, and the explanations to the answers tell you little more than the obvious. For the price, it's not a bad way to get a bunch of questions though.

5-0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS BOOK, You will not be disappointed!!!
I bought this book and read it over a two week period and passed my exam with flying colors.I can't begin to tell you how awesomely well this book prepared me for the exam.I scored almost 900 out of 1000 from reading this book and doing a couple of practice exams, nothing else just the book and practice exams. The chapter on monitoring and remote access is awesome. There is nothing wrong with this book. This book is a hole in one, a bulls eye, a pefect compliement to your experience and know how.Just make sure that you read it cover to cover. To pass this exam follow these simple steps.

1.Read this book cover to cover
2.Take a few practice exams.Make sure you get an 800 or higher on your practice exams, that will give you wiggle room just in case the test proves harder than you expected.
3.Take your real test. That's it nothing else.

If you want to pass your exam... Then use this book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars This book is all right if you already know the subject
I read the Microsoft Press 70-293 book as well as taking the Testout video tutorials and Transcender practice exams.I felt pretty good about passing the test, however, I ended up failing it due to simply running out of time.I got this book to go over the subject matter once again, which it does in pretty good detail and from a different perspective than the Microsoft Press publication. If I were trying to learn this material from ground zero, I don't think this book would of been much help because it is somewhat hard to understand at times and the writing style is verbose and more overly complicated than it should be.Also, I feel that on the practice questions and answers, that if they would of explained why something was wrong or right, it would of been more helpful.I did find quite a bit of typographical errors throughout the book, which I feel was unprofessional on Syngress' part. One feature I did like was the Frequently Asked Questions at the end of each chapter which I found helpful.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is the first time I have ever felt compelled to write a review!
If you understand the material covered in this book already then you might find it useful. However if you are new to this subject, forget it. Unless you enjoy poorly written books then avoid this book like the plague. I shall explain why.
1. This book uses pages and pages to explain something that could be explained clearly and completely in one paragraph.
2. This style of writing in this book is overly complex. Instead of putting things in clear simple English, the authors decided to use complex words in place of simple ones just to make it sound more complicated than it really is.
3. It goes over topics and does not cover them in enough detail and then says you won't get this in the exam but you should know it anyway.

Let me finish my review by saying this. I understand sub-netting completely. I read the chapter on it to refresh my memory. I ended up not having a clue what the authors were saying and thinking that no beginner would have a clue what they are on about let alone be able to do it.

So in closing, this is a terrible book. Avoid it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I am studying for my MCSE (all self study) & am no stranger to computer based testing. I had the MS Press Book for this, so I read it cover to cover & then tried to do Testking Exams... big problem, there were plenty of questions that were not even mentioned in the MS Press book. I got this book & after going through the gaps that the MS Press book left was very confident to pass the exam, & I did with a score of 928. It's a great book & I'll be getting a sygness book for my next exam too. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good learning tool but not a total answer
Use this for my MCSE but you need to have a really good reference book to go with it to have all the information you need for the exam. The Microsoft Training Kit is a better investment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Exam Prep
Great book for obtaining a foundation of Windows networking.
Make sure you have a real life network to practice on in order to derive the full benefit from the book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Agree with the others
Amazingly lazy effort. Some of the data, like basic security concepts, are universal (the definition of a "threat" is the same, regardless of OS) but after that this book is... well, saying it's a "retread" is being nice.

The screenshots in this book even still refer to Windows 2000.Chapter 3 has a very nice "System Properties" screenshot that says "Windows 2000, Service Pack 3".Going by that, it's not even completely up to date on Windows 2000.

If you're looking for basic security concepts, this book should be alright... but there are better options (like anything Security+ related).Unfortunately, this was my first Sybex book... and will probably be my last.

1-0 out of 5 stars Outdated and horribly written
As mentioned in the previous review, most of the text and diagrams reference Windows 2000, despite the book being titled for Server 2003. After using Sybex books to pass the core requirements for my MCSA cert, I was eager to use this one for my elective requirement. However, the book is written in a very non-technical manner; the text as well as the review questions are vague and even incorrect at times. I have found a few obviously incorrect statements / questions that will be submitted to Sybex as errata. For once I'm glad I purchased the Microsoft Press book on this subject.

2-0 out of 5 stars Copy/Pasted Server 2000 book (barely for 2003)
Although the book has a 2004 copyright, much of the info is dated. Tables are referred to as for Server 2003, but the tables were obviously made for Server 2000 and simply copied into this book. Table 3.1 is a perfect example, referenced as the command line switches for the mbsacli.exe command, yet the table is titled HFNetChk Switches (the authors couldn't be bothered to do anything except copy/paste this info in). This is a common thread throughout this book, obviously NOT written for 2003, but a slightly updated (making references to 2003) security book for Server 2000. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book complicated subject.
Microsoft security design exam 70-298 is very hard. It is not for the faint at heart.

I used this book and this book only to pass my test. This said I have 7 years experience in DOD, HIPPA, PCI and general hands on security design and real life experience. The test is a "Case Study" exam it will ask you question that are conceptual design questions but are complicated by the fact that you must read and understand your customers needs.

If you are just beginning security ...Look other places and start reading a lot!

4-0 out of 5 stars Acceptable
I didn't have the problem with this book that the other reviewers did. It prepared me well enough to pass on the first try. If you very recently passed 70-299, then this is a good book for building on what you learned for that exam by hitting the new areas needed for 70-298. Why would you want a behemoth of a book wasting your time by covering security from scratch when you just learned all of the basics while studying for 70-299?

You should *not* use this book if you passed 70-299 quite a while ago. Perhaps that is the situation that the other reviewers were in; I don't know. This book will not cover everything to the satisfaction of someone who's forgotten much of what they learned from 70-299 or who struggles with security. If security topics don't come easily for you, you're probably better off with a larger, more comprehensive book.

My recommendation: if you got a good book for 70-299, passed that exam very recently and feel comfortable with its topics and your knowledge of them, then this book will do the job of supplementing your knowledge with what's required to pass 70-298.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it!
The MS Press books and Syngress titles will serve you better than this book. While there is some useful information in the book, it is not nearly enough to justify the purchase.

You will be better served looking elsewhere for resources for the 70-298 exam.Transcender is a good place to start.

3-0 out of 5 stars Won't help very much
After reading the book and taking the test I cannot highly recommend this book.I don't think there is many study guides for this test, so I'll give it three stars since it is better than nothing!

1-0 out of 5 stars No Items on Test!
Book seemed to be well written but did not seem to follow test very well. There was too much stuff on test I never heard/saw from reading this book and passing all supplied tests. ... Read more

Microsoft Certified Trainer Alan Carter has been teaching the Microsoft Official Curriculum for more than a decade, and his previous MCSE books have more than 160,000 copies in print. His newly designed, two-color study system--which features fully integrated test-prep software on CD-ROM--is just what you need to master the material and pass all of the "Core Four" required exams on the Windows 2000 MCSE track. It also boasts a special section for those upgrading from the NT4 exam, making this 5-in-1 title an incredible value.Amazon.com Review
Windows 2000 MCSE Study System is an odd book by MCSE standards, and the simplest way to put it is this: If you like the concept, you'll love the book; if you don't, this book might well confuse you.

Why? Because the Windows 2000 MCSE Study System isn't really a study guide for the exams; the exams themselves are segmented, and focus on various aspects of Windows 2000. The guide is actually a study course that explains the various aspects of Windows 2000 networks and how they work together, the Microsoft curriculum be damned. By the time you get through this book, you will have an intense working knowledge of Windows 2000 that should serve you well in the real world. If you're the sort of person who is good at recalling vast amounts of details and wants to know everything (because the topics that come up on Microsoft exams are not necessarily always the topics that are important in real life), this is for you; if you're not, the sheer amount of information might flood you under.

The Study System's main strength lies in its detailed and comprehensive walk-throughs. Every MCSE book has hands-on exercises, of course, but the sheer variety and depth of the tutorials in this book practically guarantee Windows 2000 comprehension once you get through them all. Assuming that you have two Windows 2000 computers that are networked together (which, given the relative cheapness of low-end PCs and the easy availability of trial copies of Windows 2000, is probably not a bad idea for any MCSE candidate nowadays), you'll find a clearly written and memorable tutorial for most every aspect of Windows 2000, from disk volumes to creating DNS zones to configuring network settings. Go through every walk-through in the Study System, and you'll have a wealth of actual hands-on experience to use in future systems. Simply put, you will not find a better resource if you like to tinker with live systems.

Unfortunately, the writing itself is long on detail, but short on explanation; this works fine as a reference for post-MCSE candidates, but sells it short for confused pre-testers who still don't quite get critical MCSE concepts. You'll find some excellent walk-throughs for creating DNS zones; but, if you're unclear on exactly what a DNS zone is or why someone might need one, you won't find much hand-holding here. To confuse concepts for the neophyte further, the book doesn't necessarily explain things in order. Again, taking DNS as an example, you'll find "Installing and Configuring DNS" in chapter 7, but won't get a full explanation of what is TCP/IP (the protocol on which DNS is based) until chapter 16. If you're willing to read through the entire book, you'll get all of the detail that you need. But everything that you need to know to comprehend a particular topic might be scattered across two or three chapters, which possibly necessitates two or three reads to nail everything down in a coherent whole.

On the plus side, however, there are many fine and detailed charts that will serve you well in your post-MCSE days. As stated, this book works fine as an on-the-job reference, which is far more than can be said for most MCSE books.

The quizzes at the end of each chapter are well thought through, and give you two question types: Assessment, which comprise multiple-choice questions that measure raw knowledge ("Which tool should you use to create VPNs?") and Scenarios, which are open-ended questions that focus on troubleshooting and problem-solving. Between the two question types, you'll get a good idea of what might appear on the test; but, for a book of this size, the questions are fairly scant (perhaps 8 to 10 per chapter). Still, the CD adds more questions, and the quiz-oriented lab exercises add critical depth.

In short, this is not a book that focuses on the exam, but on Windows 2000 itself--which is both an advantage and a disadvantage. The advantage is that you gain a fuller knowledge than if you simply had studied for the narrowly scoped exams. The disadvantage is that Microsoft has been known to be pedantic on their exams, and a large book that doesn't focus your attention on heavily tested topics might cause you to flunk a section that seemed of little importance at the time. If you're a searcher for knowledge and an experimenter, this book might well be right for you. --William Steinmetz ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best "Getting Started" MCSE Training Book EVER !!!
I have been reading this book and completely feel that this is the very best way to learn what's nessesary to pass MCSE certification. This book takes the approach of teaching you the material (as opposed to helping you slide past an exam). This book will help you pass the exam and prepare you for real-world hands on situations that you'll face in the workforce, putting your MCSE to work for you.

Read this book first and no doubt you'll be much more prepared to take on individual study books for each exam. This book is the most direct course to successful MCSE study.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too many words!
I WANTED to like this book. I love the idea of covering all four exams in one study guide (even if, as others have said, it's only enough to get you through two of them). I also love the idea of learning Windows 2000 Networking As a Whole, as opposed to studying for four individual tests. After all, to learn Pro, you must know some things about Server, but to learn Server, you must know some things about Pro, and so on.

But a quarter of the way into it I realized it wasn't working that great. With only a feeble explanation of zones, the author begins talking about how to implement and configure them. That's where I started to get lost. How can I configure a zone when I'm still unclear as to what one is, exactly, and why I would need it?

Onward. I carefully read an entire page of dense text (time elapsed = 2 minutes), only to realize that he had just told me that sometimes W2K doesn't have the proper drivers for PCMCIA card services and you must contact the manufaturer (time elapsed to read this sentence = 3 seconds).

And the exercises are similar in wordiness. For example, the explanation of how to install DNS would start like this: "Click on the Start Menu. Go to Control Panel. Click on Add/Remove Programs. Click on Add/Remove Windows Components. Move index finger of right hand over left mouse button. Apply pressure, forcing left mouse button down....etc."

In other words, loooooong repetitive explanations for the simplest of tasks, but then insufficient explanation of theory and vital concepts. I'm really starting to like the idea of those visual guides (Read Less, Learn More). Glance at one picture and know instantly what they are talking about, where it is located, and how to do it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good book for 210 & 215
I liked this book for the 210 & 216 but it was severely lacking in the 216 & 217 tests. You will not pass unless you have a TON of experience. Its a good book to kill 2 birds with 1 stone. Not 4 birds. Get different books for 216 & 217.I was NOT impressed with the CD rom either. Its asked hard questions NOT coverd by the material.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good bookfor General knowledge not MCSE Exam
This book has too much of expnation for not very specific reason
Itdoes not seperated the professional version and Server versionIts very hard to mix NT and professional and Advance Server and Saerverin any givingchapter I wish he could seperate the material for each Examthrough individual chapter for specific Exam or else take MCSE tittle off , and if you want to take for example 70-215 exam you have to look ot many chapters and read lots of none related explanation and practices, Bunch of Windows NTIdeas makean exam taker more confused,I find it boring none sense and too much waste of time If you want to take MCSE exam .

4-0 out of 5 stars Just okay... but it worked for me...
I agree, as few can argue, that Carter's NT 4.0 text was the text to use.The 2000 study system, I believed, was lacking specific detail on a few topics. To supplement (or I should say in conjunction with) the text I borrowed a non-production server from work and tried nearly every new feature of the Win2000 OS.I took the 70-240 exam and passed.I also purchased the complete BFQ software 70-240--good buy.I used no other study material.Perhaps Carter too assumes that the reader has experience with NT 4.0.Either way, the book served its purpose.

Yes there is repetition--it's called reinforcement. The intro chapters are great, always stating that more detail is to be found in a later chapter. The highlights of what has changed from NT4 to W2K are also a benefit.

Not as good as his NT4, but worth while for exam study.Once you pass, get something else for reference and more detail.Remember this is an MCSE study system-not complete coverage of Windows 2000. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly organized, too little practical information
This book has two main flaws that caused me to abandon it after the first few chapters.

First, it spends an inordinate amount of time on theory, compared to giving practical examples.

Second (and a truly fatal flaw) is that during the course of the book, the reader is directed to build a database that is essential to reading the following chapters. The reader is encouraged to think theoretically about the general structure of the database, but is given no specifics. Yet specifics are exactly what the later chapters require! If the reader follows the directions, it will become necessary to make numerous structure changes later.

Worse yet, the "correct" database is not included on the CD, nor is it available online. That makes it impossible for the more advanced user to skip chapters that he doesn't need.

This book has become one of my more expensive doorstops.

4-0 out of 5 stars I passed the test...
I bought this book the day before I took the exam because I was struggling with the measure up tests. I read through the book in one day and passed the exam the next day.

I was disappointed that the exam questions on the CD were the same as in the book. I was hoping there would be a different set of questions.

I recommend this book if you're just looking to pass the exam and also have access to the course material. It will help reinforce what I learned in the course material in an exam-type way.

3-0 out of 5 stars good
This book is just a test book.
If you are able to pass all the tests in the CD, then you will not have problems with the real test. However, as always, some ot the questions are wrong.
The software for the test is not so good, if you just take the test for the third time, half of the questions will be known to you.
Since the main reason you buy this book, is to check your preparation pro-certification, i think i can give it 3 on 5 stars.
If you are italian, you should not take the italian version of the book, it is just written in something different from a language for IT professionals.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Really Accurate
I had thought that this book and the sample Exam on the CD would be a realy close reflection of the exam content. But whan I took the exam, it didn't seem like that was the case. The book and sample exam seemed to focus on Admin. stuff while the exam seemed to emphasize SQL, TSQL and database design a lot more.I also don't think the book prepares you for security-related questions very well. But it might still be worthwhile for someone who feels ready to take the exam and just wants some practice.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not much help...

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Ordinary Indeed
Firstly, I don't know where the 800 pages are in this book! I ordered this exact book from this exact web page, and my copy has 593 pages including all the Que Publishing adverts at the back.

I'm not quite at the end of chapter 2 in this book and I've just ordered the Sybex equivalent to work from instead. The writing style of the author/s is unclear and leaves a lot to presumption of the reader. The layout of the book is hard to follow, with exam tips and important notes displayed in boxes in the left and right margins, instead of being placed amongst the main paragraphs where the information is relevant to what you are reading at the time.
Added to that there have been numerous typos and errors already (up to page 87), including vital errors that can leave you very confused. An example being:The book states at one stage that 255.255.224.0 is a 27 bit subnet mask when in fact it's a 19 bit subnet mask. This statement causes great confusion when you are right in the middle of learning IP addressing and VSLM's.To me, this kind of error is inexcusable.

Although the Sybex books aren't perfect (have used 70-290 & 70-210) I've found so far that they are much easier to follow, better laid out and a little less prone to errors. These mixed with the Exam Cram 2 books seem to be the best route I've found so far.

The only reason I tried this particular book was because I was so impressed with Que Publishing's Exam Cram 2 series that I thought their Core Training Guide's would be equally as good.I was wrong.

With a lot of study and some hands on experience, you can pass the exams. The less hands on experience you have, the more you have to study. The hardest part is finding the right literature to study from.Good luck!

1-0 out of 5 stars A review of the reviews
Interesting that so far all the reviews for this 800-page study guide were posted within a month after the book's publication date; all give glowing, five-star endorsements; and all are written in a very similar writing style.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't get much better than this.
I looked through a couple of other books at my local bookseller and decided on this one as the winner.Ordered it and it came a few days later from Amazon. This book is great, I can't really put it any simpler than that. It's concise and straight to the point, but still gives you some extra information above and beyond the exam that makes it a good read and a good reference. This was my second MCP exam (I took 70-290 a few weeks ago) and it was a painless experience thanks to the great material in this book. Thanks guys, you rock!

5-0 out of 5 stars #1 Test Prep Resource
An outstanding certification guide.Lots of examples and thoroughly goes over every topic in the 70-291 exam.Moves over each topic clearly and in a way that is easy to understand and implement.A must have for anyone preparing to test.

5-0 out of 5 stars The *must have* book.
Quite simply, I was blown away at the quality and structure of this title! The authors & editors have created more than a great study guide for 70-291. Easy to read, lots of good hands on labs and real world advise. Because it is such and easy read, it susprised me how much data was packed in.

Further if an area of specific interest isn't covered well enough for a particular reader, it has great references for further study.

The bottom line is this is more than a study guide. It is also a great reference work as well as a good way to learn Windows 2003. I strongly encourage professional of *any* level who need to know TCP/IP or Windows 2003 to get this book and keep it close by at all times. Candidates for CompTIA A+ and Network+ would be well advised to at least read the book. The coverage of TCP/IP is done with amazing simplicity for such a complex topic. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Warning: This book can cause exam failure.
I should have listened to Amazon customer David T.'s review of this book.He is exactly correct about this book being loaded with contradictions and inaccuracies.I had to stop after the first chapter because I was afraid this book would make me dumber.Amazon reviewer L. G. Poe's review said he read this book before taking the 70-290 a second time and scored even lower than he did the first time.I'm not surprised by this at all.2 of the 10 review questions for chapter one provide answers that are flat out wrong.
I am extremely disappointed and I wish I could get my money back. There is simply no excuse for providing incorrect information in a study guide. The editor of this book does not deserve a job.I wish that all the people who read this book and consequently failed their exams can be reimbursed by Mike Meyers. This book is going in the trash!I would sell it a half-price book store to recoup some of my loss, but I have too much of a conscience to put this damaging book back out into society.
I purchased two other books to help me prepare for this exam:Sybex's 70-290 study guide written by Lisa Donald and Microsoft's 70-290 Self-Paced Training Kit written by Dan Holme.I haven't read Microsoft's book yet, but I have to say that I have been pleasantly surprised by Lisa Donald's book.Unlike Mike Meyers' nightmare version of a study guide, I've gone through 3 chapters so far of Lisa Donald's book and haven't found any inaccuracies. Also, she walks you through, step-by-step, how to access and perform specific common tasks, instead of just saying "You'll want to spend some time with x if you're not already familiar with it."Wow, Mike Meyers' book! That was helpful insight.I should spend some time with something I'm not familiar with, in order to become more familiar with it.How did they come up with that concept?

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice.Primary book!
This is a good book to have in your collection. These Passport books are great.Gives you enough to pass the test, and then some.I used this as my primary book for the test, plus CBT videos, and test lab in the house. Also throw in a study guide, and practice test, and you should be good. When studying just practice the things you are learning over and over, and you you should be good for the test. This makes a good reference as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Study Guide on the Market
I was introduced to the Passport series while studying for my Network+ exam.Since then I have used the Passport series for 70-270, 70-290 and 70-218, both tests were passed with flying colors.I purchased numerous other books but always come back to the Passport series.Couldn't pass a test without them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book if you have a lot of experience.....
I am using the passport series to work on my MCSE. I have taken two exams (70-290 and 70-293)using just this series as guides and have passed both first time.I have been working with NT/AD technology for years so I am looking for concise info concentrated on what I need to pass exams and find these books fit the bill.

If you are new to Windows or networking, these books are not tutorials. They do not provide much hand holding through examples, they are just study guides.

I can only rate the books as four stars because on each exam I took, I was blindsided by a few questions.Things on the exam that the book did not even cover.

However, they do earn a solid four stars for their conciseness. They are relatively short, easy to read and well focused on giving you the information you need to pass.If you have a solid background in the technologies already, they will not waste your time with tutorials.

All told, I have found them to be excellent study guides. If you are new to Windows, you'll need another series.

2-0 out of 5 stars supplemental only
Do not rely upon this book only. You will be disappointed. Also, the book assumes that the reader already has knowledge of this server. Statements like "spend some time looking at the group policies" are supposed to help. Come on there are over 160 group policies on the 2003 Server. I have taken the 70-290 twice and did worse the second time. The night before I reread most of this book which I don't think helped much. I really haven't found anything that matches the last test that I took (70-290).
I wish that I could find something that matches what Microsoft does on test day.
Don't rely on any one book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book...
Great book.Mr Archer does a good job bringing technical knowledge together with practical application. It obviously won't give you everything you need to know for exam. But I don't know a book that does on any subject.I recommend it.

Happy Reading!

4-0 out of 5 stars Covers Exam
This book is exactly what Microsoft wants.Microsoft wants IT people to start thinking of the business and that's how you structure the Active Directory.I read this book cover to cover, got the Transcender demo, and some other Internet study "guides".This book got me a pass on the exam.Yes the first chapters are not on the exam but the thought process is.Chapters 10-14 are the meat of this and if you do the book and the exercises you will have gone a long way to pass the exam. The transcender demo shouwed me what the exam looked like (the new format) but was not that helpful, dumps and guides were OK to refresh the book, but when I took the exam I got case studies that were on the dumps but the questions were different, the name was the same but the solution had changed. You still have to reason through this to pass and this book helps you see what is going on with DNS, Group Policy and Active Directory design option.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a good "Training Guide"
I purchased these books for my MCSE course curriculum and was very disappointed . This book does very little to prepare students for the 70-219 exam. They find it very dry, and lacking in the implemtation and technical aspects of designing an AD infrastructure. This is more of a business application book, and would be good reading for consultants and network engineers with experience and the technical aspects already mastered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for Design exams
This book ia a must have for anyone who is in the industry as a Consultant or Systems Engineer.Mr. Archer has done a tremendous job of bringing an overwhelming amout of information into a concise, well structured and easy to read book. Some of the reviews I have read have knocked this book on the amount of technical information. These readers should have read the introduction of this and the other "design" books which clearly state that the core technical information is in the administering ... training guides. If you do not have a grasp of the technical skills, how can you possibly hope to design a solution.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I have used the New Riders MCSE study guides all the way through my MCSE study preparation, usually in conjunction with the Coriolis Exam Cram series. I found this book to be very light on technical content, and to contain several errors. This is very annoying and confusing when you do not know enough about a subject to be sure that you have just discovered an error. I am currently looking for additional study material for exam 70-219 as I do not feel confident after reading this book. This is a good general introduction to AD design, but look elsewhere for substance. The Exam Gear test questions do not seem anywhere near as challenging as the Microsoft Test PEP questions that I have purchased, which leads me to further doubt the content of this book. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Good if you want a guide to what you should remember
I previously studied and aced the 70-228 exam and obtained a wealth of information from 'Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Unleashed' (ISBN 0672324679).It had enough information for both that exam and this exam.I've never used an Exam Cram book before and have to say I was disappointed. While it occasionally passed on some specific info, it was more like a guide that tells you a topic is important and that you should study it!If you want to learn and understand how/why you are to do something, this book doesn't cut it.If you want a guide to give you a few quick facts and then tells you to study other materials, then this guide is fine.I was expecting something along the lines of a concise listing of what you needed to know without delving into non-exam topics (which was fine by me after reading the exhausting 1500 book I mentioned above); but, this is anything but concise.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the money
If you have several years experience with MS SQL 2000 you may be able to pass the 70-229 with this book only.A great way to measure your readiness is by taking the test that comes included in the CD.If you pass it with an 85 or above, I'll say you're ready. If you don't, this book should be enough to prepare you for the test.

I also discovered that this book is a compressed regurgitation of the "MCSE SQL Server 2000 Database Design and Implementation Training Guide" (ISBN 0789729970) written by the same author a few years earlier.I definitely recommend the Exam Cram 2 instead of the one mentioned in this paragraph.

One thing I found very interesting is that the questions in the CD are extremely similar to the ones in the actual test.It will definitely give you a good sense of what the test is going to be like.Make sure you pass 3 practice tests with 85 or above before you go and take the real test.

Good luck!

I used this book as part of my revision portfolio. i found it a comprehensive reference in my revision for Exam 70-229. it is light on a couple of stuff ie: XML , estimating the size of a database and such. but all in all after reading it, i felt like i had a clear grasp of all the areas i needed to know about & prepare for , for the exam. Having that confidence helped in moving forward to the next phase ie: tackling past questions.

what i liked about this book :
- it lists the various objectives of the exam & there is a chapter for each Exam objective.
- it is a comprehensive read at 321 pages.
- there are exam questions after every chapter, Relating to that chapter
- there is a CD with 50 questions set in an application that simulates the exam room scenario.
- on the ExamCram2 site, a section features 64-100 additional questions & answers
- Answers with explanations are provided with every question featured in the book.

However, i also coupled my preparation with the following and when it came to crunch this is what made all the difference when taking the exam: u might want to check these out

(and this is why i cant give the book alone all 5 points of credit)

(1.) SQL Server 2000 Fast Answers ISBN: 1590595920
value:( the only place i found anything on estimating the size of a database , (apart from BOL) and past question scenario explanations. besides that, this is also a very good reference for 70-229 & 70-228. -- Sack is a good SQL Server author
(2.) SQL Tips & Techniques: ISBN:1931841454
Value:(for matters SQL ie: using ROLLUP,CUBE , T-sql rules, cursors, triggers, sprocs, server security elements, the works. a magnificent reference. with plenty of examples-(very important).I cherish this author.
(3.)Portable DBA SQL Server. ISBN:0072230169
Value:(if u read this before the ExamCram2 book, you'll feel much more prepared for ExamCram2 and the past questions stage.it helped consolidate my knowledge and identify areas of weakness.

However, if you have used other study aids or big 700page type Tombs, or feel resonably confident of your understanding, or have identified your areas of weakness & really just need a bit of practise for the exam, then this is what u should do instead.
(Go on The fast track)
(a.) Get a copy of Transcender certification for Exam 70-229 answer all 132 qestions and read the expanations where u go wrong.
(b.) Get a copy of Testking Exam 70-229, anything from version 1.x up is good, answer all 107 or 238 questions on the various problem scenarios and study the explanations where u go wrong.
(c.)visit braindumps dot com and get the latest exam 70-229 brain dump. answer all 107+ questions. understand the stuff & leave no stone unturned.

schedule and sit the exam when you've finished with these various example scenario questions.u r ready.

Ace the exam.

listen, there are many other books that i referenced, but what i think is most important (after revising and knowing your stuff) is to pass the actual exam in 160minutes & 44 questions. you need to tackle question regarding problem scenarios in order to sharpen your wits about applying/selecting/choosing the right solution /tool or strategy within any given problem scenario. this is the crunch of it. do that ,and u pass.

End of.

oh, for those wondering, i took the exam just thursday last ie:(30th March 2006); scored 93% ie: 931. The pass mark is 700 ie: 70%.

Good luck.

cheers :-)

3-0 out of 5 stars Average exam review
A good review book explains all the topics in a consise fasion this book does explain the topics that well is a bit disorganized and has topics missing. There are better review books out the for SQL 2K

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not enough
This book is a good, general introduction to the 70-229 exam concepts - but I had to couple it with the Transcender practice exam before I felt comfortable taking the exam. The exam topics are so broad that the book doesn't do enough to emphasize when to use what.It also skips some important topics (sp_cursoropen) and its practice tests include Full Text Searches which the book notes are unlikely to be on the exam.To the editors: A 'databases' index entry with three pages of sub-entries is redundant in a book about databases.I love the Exam Cram series, but this was the poorest book of the bunch. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Average, not more. Cut and paste from 2000 Pro?
I teach at a small college and just gave a course on XP from this book. My impression is that this is a repackaged Windows 2000 Pro book, updated with XP Pro screen shots. Since the two systems are so similiar, this approach works most of the time.

However, there are some technical errors. For example, the book states that Windows 95 OSR2 can be upgraded directly to XP Pro, even though the Microsoft web site says the contrary. This was true for Windows 2000 Pro. A practice question (P 32, #9), probably also left over from Windows 2000 Pro days, suggests Windows 98 as the best choice OS when security is not a priority. Microsoft today of course disagrees, recommending XP Home Edition, but that probably didn't exist when this question was written.

If you do buy it to prepare the 70-270 exam, make sure that you also get the companion lab manual. The hands-on exercises are much more thorough than the ones in the text book.

This is the third book I have used to teach XP Pro, and sadly, I can't really recommend any of them.

2-0 out of 5 stars Kibble and bits, no real meat.
With so many unclear and shallow explanations and very little effort in actually teaching, and instead packaging a scrambled mess of facts and information; this book has left me disappointed and unsatisfied.

I am far from a novice when it comes to computers, but I struggled many times trying to make mental connections; basically putting all the puzzle pieces together in this scattered and incomplete jigsaw puzzle. As far as being prepared for the MCSE/MCSA test after reading this book, I'm no more confident than I was before.

Being that there were no reviews for this book here on Amazon, along with the low popularity shown by the sales rank and the high price, I would never have boughten this book had one of my classes not required it.

Anyone considering this book, my suggestion to you would be to look for a tried and true, better quality book, that's actually worth the money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book for Preparing for TCP/IP certification.
When preparing for the TCP/IP exam, I read both Sybex, and New Riders books. The New Riders covered exactly what was on the exam.It was much more detailed and to-the-point.It really got down to the nitty-gritty "what you need to know". It is definitely worth the money!

3-0 out of 5 stars Authors Know SMS well - needs to be redone for 1.2
I felt the book's content reflected a deep and practical knowledge of SMS on the part of the authors. This book is actually a very good overall planning guide for SMS.Most third party references focus on operations and gloss over site planning issues - yet these are the most important if you are consulting. The book definintely needs an update for SMS 1.2 and the SMS Installer.Success in the SMS test hinges on having a very unpractical level of knowledge of all the complex and interlocking SMS configuration requirements - "small" differences between 1.1 and 1.2 could mean failing the test. This is still the most effective reference for the 1.2 test if you cross-reference it with other resources (product manuals and classroommaterials).

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!
Technical problems with the book.It has many technical and SPELLING errors.Read that again:SPELLING.Our company is shipping back twenty copies of the book.It is also very dated. It is for NT 3.51 and for SMS 1.1.If you simply must buy the book, then I have some land in Florida that you would just love!

4-0 out of 5 stars TCP/IP section is good, SMS REALLY DATED v1.0
I used this exam to write the 2 MCSE electives and i scored pretty well. The SMS part is really old, MS is at 1.2 now, and thsi book covers 1.0. However, this book has just about the BEST and EASIEST to understand explination on how to do subnetting with subnet masks. It breaks down theTCP/IP address is great detail and its still easy to understand. This book is worth having alone just for it's Subnet mask explination and examples.

3-0 out of 5 stars Easy-to-read, many bugs in the material, good TCP/IP book
This book was a great text for teaching the Microsoft Certified System Engineer TCP/IP course and the optional SMS course. The material is dated because of its tie to NT 3.51 and needs to be updated. There are numerous errors in the material including contradictions in the text and practice questions that have incorrect answers. If your purpose is to pass the certification exam, this will help. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Some real review
I purchased this book for 70-058 exam preparation and I think it was a good choice. I bought two books on the same subject (SAMS > NetEss in 14 days and ExamCram > NetEss) and when I took some online tests I recognized that wasn't prepared enough. Why York's book is better? Well, I think it's written pretty clear language and includes the exact info you would need to pass the exam ( you have about two month to do so from the present day ).I can't recommend this book as the ONLY source for preparation but it also helped me much. Worst the money and definitely deserves 4 stars.Hope you'll pass with score like mine. Good luck !

5-0 out of 5 stars QUE really is the best!
This is one superb book.I read it and understood it completely in 2 weeks.Dan York explains things in a systematic fashion which does not condescend, but at the same time assumes nothing.I had comprehensive desktop pc experience before reading this book.I now feel competent to talk the network language, and in some detail in some cases.I passed my exam easily due to this book's clarity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Very clearly written--doesn't try to blow you away with obtuse jargon. Also tracked very closely with what was asked in the exam.I think this is the only book you'll need for 70-058.

5-0 out of 5 stars Passed!
Great book.I used only this and some practice exams and passed with a 900 on my first try.I feel it covered everything that it needed to and was easy to read. ... Read more
