Product Description
This book is a complete, definitive study guide for gaining a certification pass in the Sun Certified Web Component Developer (SCWCD) exam (310-080). Each chapter is structured around one section of the exam objectives and follows it closely. This helps you to focus on learning what is necessary for the exam without surrounding clutter. By the end of each chapter you will have the knowledge required to answer any question on the subject that could appear in the exam. A revision sheet and exam-standard questions follow each chapter to further reinforce the topics in that chapter.

What's more, the book has been design to be useful beyond the study period. All the objectives are explained using real-world examples so that your can come back to the book for reference. In addition to this, the book contains a large case study that will integrate all the topics and objective you have learned through the rest of the book. Java web applications are more than a disparate collection of topics and as such the case study pulls together all the topics in the book to give some context to the whole technology.

The book provides all that you will need to become a fully certified, professional Java web developer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very exam focused
I like the layout of this book - the chapters follow Sun's outline for the exam topics.I found the book to be surprisingly well written / edited - very few of the all too common typos and wrong answers that pass muster in many geek books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Passed SCWCD with 91% and Wrox's SCWCD
This book is well organized according to the order of the exam objectives. If you have work experience about Servlet and JSP, you can read it and pass the SCWCD with ease. However, some questions of SCWCD exam are not listed in objectives, such as front controller, servlet code for security constraint. Therefore, the book can help you only pass SCWCD but can't help you get a high score. Other reference notes or books are needed if you want to get a high score.
Anyway, it is a good book for SCWCD.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book
This is a book that try hard to stick to the exam objectives. The plus point of the book is the set of questions asked at the back of each chapter also the accompanying CD contain very good mock exam. The book is only meant for those who are considerably good at the technology, and beginners will find it difficult to read between the lines.
I don't think one can rely solely on this book to score more than 90% in the exam not becuase it dosen't cover all the objectives/topics required but the depth is lacking.

Noaman.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must buy
"If you have it, you don't need ne other book."

5-0 out of 5 stars Just take it!...
I had just completed SCJP with 78% and wanted to go for SCWCD ASAP! thought who else to trust than a name like wrox? I simply read few reviews about it and bought the book. It really exceeded all my expectations!... SCWCD became just a cakewalk for me! It covered all the objectives in just the adequate depth. Also gave me a mock exam CD to practice with! Wow man! that was fundoo! And it is precise, just the right things no extra work to be done. I just read it twice and practiced with the CD given along with it. I later bought SCWCD@Whiz full version also. I felt veri confident once I used both and straightway took the plunge! I scored 94%! I couldn't have asked for more. I felt the exam was a little easier than I imagined.

I don't think you would need anything else once you take it. Just don't waste time!

All the best!

4-0 out of 5 stars needed a quick overview
I needed to understand very quickly what the topic of J2EE for an upcoming interview. This book, very simply, helped me understand how I
should prioritize my further reading.

The book has enough information to get started. This is not a comprehensive book about J2EE, or a J2EE bible. I would not use
this book as a reference for programming or coding, but if I was
applying for a job, or moving into Java from a legacy system, like in
my case - this was perfect. It got me up to speed.

Again, this is not the J2EE bible or massive technical reference, it's
a career guide for J2EE jobs and J2EE job seekers.

Why this book is unique :

ITCOOKOOK readers have a need for information they can use right
now.And our series of IT interview questions books is an answer to
that need for instant information. Our books are written by IT
practitioners and expert authors who have varied and vast
experiences in the world of information technology.

Rather than focusing on comprehensive, textbook-sized or voluminous
reference guides, ITCOOKBOOK includes only the information that can
be used immediately by the reader in their job search or IT career.
In this regard, the books are much shorter, and this is the
overwhelming preference of our readers. Rather than providing more
information, our books focus on providing the right
information.ITCOOKBOOK Interview Question books can also be
thought of as "cook books" in the traditional sense in that they
provide the reader information in a very concise and useable manner,
not unlike a recipe. In this way we hope we serve our readers by
saving them time - by helping or readers understand what is
important, and what they can safely ignore.

For instance, you might find our books particularly useful for
gaining knowledge and understanding of a completely unfamiliar area
of IT.By skimming the table of contents and index, you may quickly
understand the most important aspects of a particular area, and also
have access to the accumulated knowledge of our expert authors. It is
the unique "Question and Answer" nature of the books that make them
so valuable.

It can be said that, "If you can't find the right answers, maybe
you're not asking the right questions..." Our books not only help the
reader understand the answers, by providing explanations where
applicable but also provide the right questions. Our books also
include code listings and command references which set them apart -
and keep them close at hand at work rather than collecting dust on
the shelf.

Finally, ITCOOKBOOK books are published with several goals in mind
which we believe set them apart from other sources of information.
Our mission is to provide the reader with timely, useful information
that will increase their technical literacy, increase the awareness
of careers in information technology, and challenge our readers to
question the status quo.All of our authors are IT professionals -
and we know that our books offer a great deal of value to our
readers - we hope you find them as useful as we do!

1-0 out of 5 stars Definitely the worst book I ever bought
In short, this is a troubleshooting guide compiled by someone who has no knowledge of J2EE. I think the text is copired from some technical forum or Blog...I am not seven ure how the manages to get published, but he has written similar books on many other topics, sold on Amazon. I think the author publishes his own books. Authors credentials are not mentioned anywhere in the book (just the name)....the book has no logical flow or content management. It is highly disorganized...actually after reading few pages you will even forget anything you know about XI....

I think this is a SCAM!!! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Sloppy Sloppy Sloppy!
I'm not ready for the exam yet, but already I've picked out numerous typos, goof-ups and errors. Seriously it seems like they didn't even bother to proof read it before printing. The more I read the angrier I get - there's no excuse for this kind of sloppiness in a text that deals with very complicated material, where subtle differences in meaning make a HUGE difference for the exam. I'm tempted just to not finish reading it, it's very difficult to read, worded poorly and circularly, and often just does more to confuse me than help. The full size study guide is much better. Read that first and then approach these exam notes critically, and DON'T rely on them. If in doubt check your facts with other sources, cause this book can't be trusted.

5-0 out of 5 stars good book
I got the book and didn't see any of the typos that other people were mentioning and I am a consultant who uses the language quite a bit... perhaps it was a newer edition, but i found this book useful

3-0 out of 5 stars Full of errors and typos.
I typically don't bother writing reviews but the quality of this book is upsetting. In terms of the content this book is alright but don't expect to get away without one of the larger ones. This is only a brief review after all and sometimes not well explained. However, I must say this book is the lousiest quality I have seen for a while now. More errors and typos than all the books together I have read during the last year. Be aware, this book is brief and compact and it gives you a lot of brief and compact misinformation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sloppy
Although this book is a good review for the certification exam, it is filled with errors in code and language. Many code examples, when applied into JDK, gave results that were different than expected (compile errors etc.). Computer programming textbooks, especially a study guide for certification, cannot afford to be sloppy.

I am not a publisher and do not claim to know anything about publishing. However, I was taken aback by the lack of attention given to the correctness and compilibility of the code examples. I would compare it to missing ingredients in a book of recipes. It might be excusacble as an oversight or typo - but what good is it to you if you have to keep second-guessing the contents.

Do not attempt to take the certification exam with this book as your only source (unless you are a Java Guru and a walking Java compiler). The most helpful book I have found is Deitel & Deitel's Java How to Program Third Edition. All of their code compiles cleanly and they give wonderful explanations of the topics at hand.

You can buy The Complete Java 2 Certification Study Guide, by Simon Roberts, Philip Heller and Michael Ernest (although this book has many errors and is bone dry when it comes to real life analogies and examples) and use the Exam Notes review as a review only!! There is a lot that is mentioned in the review book that is not covered in the Study Guide and vice versa.

I am a computer professional for close to ten years and am relatively new to Java. I was able to get Sun Certified only through mixing and matching the strengths of many Java books and web resources.

I still think it's worth your time to get the review book - but just be aware that it does not come without its shortcomings.

Good luck to all you certification candidates!! The exam is tough!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good review for exam.
I passed the Java 2 programmer's exam this morning and with a comfortable margin. This book is the primary reason why I passed.I would recommend "Thinking in Java", "Complete Java 2 Certification Study Guide", and this book. That's all you will ever need to pass.I did it from scratch, on my own without any instructor or experience.Starting from scratch without knowing java to taking the exam and passing took me about two months. Good Luck! ... Read more

Product Description

Certification and Security in Inter-Organizational E-Services presents the proceeding of CSES 2004 - the 2nd International Workshop on Certification and Security in Inter-Organizational E-Services held within IFIP WCC 2004 in August, 2004, in Toulouse, France.  Certification and security share a common technological basis in the reliable and efficient monitoring of executed and running processes; they likewise depend on the same fundamental organizational and economic principles.  As the range of services managed and accessed through communication networks grows throughout society, and given the legal value that is often attached to data treated or exchanged, it is critical to be able to certify the network transactions and ensure that the integrity of the involved computer-based systems is maintained.

This collection of papers offers real-life application experiences, research results and methodological proposals of direct interest to systems experts and users in governmental, industrial and academic communities.  This book also documents several important developments.  The uptake of distributed computational infrastructure oriented to service provision, like Web-Services and Grid, is making C&S even more important.  E-services based on legacy systems managed by autonomous and independent organizations, a common situation in the public administration sector, increase overall complexity.  The increased presence and use of e-service IT-infrastructures depends on the critical ability required for all security issues, from the basic (availability, authentication, integrity, confidentiality) to the more complex (e.g. authorization, non-repudiation), to track responsibilities, --"who did what".

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
This is a good book. I used it for a parallel computing undergraduate course at UCSD. It has many interesting case studies that go from sequential versions to parallel versions. The parallel versions usually start out slow and naive, and progress to an improved solution, helping you learn the techniques for parallel programming along the way. Software development is fun using the author's GPL'd Parallel Java library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoy your work with Java technologie
As a Sun Certified Java Programmer the SCWCD Certification is a next step in the Java world of possibilities. The Sun Certified Web Component Developer Study Guide is a great source of pleasure if you really like to understand how to control what is happening behind the scene. Don't be afraid of that big book it will just really enhance your Java skills on the World Wide Web.

3-0 out of 5 stars Messy , but practical
This book material is actually decent, accurate and complete, but exposed in a very disorganized and confusing way, with a writing style that will put you to sleep in seconds. It also contains some typos, a defect particularly unforgivable in a certification book. For style , organization and overall coolness 'Head First SCWCD' is way ahead of this book, but it does have a drawback: no code examples. Certification book or not, lack of code examples is a mortal sin (of laziness) by the authors. This book does have a few code example (structured as exercises) for the most important sections in each chapter, and a final 'lab' (simple exercise) at the end of each chapter. I like that, but I also have to say that the code examples are sometimes unnecessarily convoluted, and badly structured. Each small example is a single web application. Trust me, you will soon get tired of having to decompress and mess with every single damn war of these examples. How about a single web application organized as an Eclipse project with a ant build file to build it and deploy it instead? So, if you already have enough practice in coding java webapps, and just want to brush up the dusty corners and get used to the nasty, useless, tricky questions that plague certification exams,'Head First SCWCD' should be your favorite choice.
But if you like to do a little practice and see the concept you're studying in action, this book would be more appropriate. This book can also be used to actually learn Servlet & JSP, not just to pass the exam.
Finally, a big plus is having the entire pdf version of the book on the accompanying CD, which also contains a free exam simulator. (All things you don't get with the O'Reilly book).

2-0 out of 5 stars Needs better technical editing, or at least an online errata guide
After I finished the first chapter self-test, and saw that there were two obvious errors in the answer key (questions 7 and 19), I considered buying another book. I searched for an errata listing for the book online, with no success. I emailed the author and techical editor. To his credit, David Bridgewater replied promptly, but was not much help: he suggested that the publisher probably has it on their website (as of when I emailed him, they did not); and he also sent me corrections to two places in the book, but there are a lot more just two errors in the book.

The technical editor did not reply to my email. This comes as no surprise; perhaps she is embarrased at the poor job she did editing this book. She obviously did not give thorough consideration to the self-tests.

I decided that I did not want to spend the time or money to get a different exam guide, and that 99% of the book was most likely accurate, and the errata are probably easy to spot (even if they are really annoying), so I trudged on.

I regret that decision. I am now at the end of chapter 4, and have spotted a total of five major errors in the self-tests, and at least a dozen minor errors in the self-tests and the text of the chapters. Also annoying is the ambiguous wording in some of the self-test questions; some of the phrases used are open to interpretation, and should be worded to be less ambiguous.

Without knowing how good or bad other SCWCD exam guides are, I'd feel pretty confident in recommending that you should probably go with a different study guide that this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars save your money
The author probably has great insight into the subject matter;unfortunately, he does not know how to convey his knoeledge to the reader. The practice test questions are ambiguous and full of errors. There was probably minimal editing of questions and answers; as a result, a reader has to correct the errors and then try to fully comprehend the explanations to the practice questions. It is an inefficient way to study and learn. Head First, despite its errata (it has corrections at its website), is a superior product. This textbook is not worth the headaches.

2-0 out of 5 stars A lot of errors
I would not recommend this book even though it covers all of exam objectives and has a lot of examples and exercises. The reason is that there are a lot of errors that make this book hard to read. It is very irritating, annoying and time consuming.
Here are just some of errors I found in the book.
1. Answer to question 13 on page 88: "...HttpServletRequest.getHeaders() returns all request header names..." It is not correct because the method that returns all request header names is getHeaderNames(). There is no getHeaders() method (with no arguments) in HttpServletRequest class.
2. Page 82 question 19. Author mistakenly took the code from question 8 so the question 19 and answer to it on page 90 are completely irrelevant.
3. On page 559 author says that the type for 'items' attribute is java.lang.Array. There is no such class in Java!
4. Page 637 answer to question 8: "...J to 14 (c:forEach, again)". If you look at question's code on page 625 you can see that correct answer should be: J maps to 'body'.

Number of errors, big and small, is very high in this book. This is the case of unprofessional work both on the part of author & editor.

You'll learn not just what the technology *is*, but more importantly, *why* it is, and what it is and isn't good for. You'll learn tricks and tips for EJB development, along with tricks and tips for passing this latest, very challenging Sun Certified Business Component Developer (SCBCD) exam. You'll learn how to think like a server. You'll learn how to think like a bean. And because this is a Head First book, you'll learn how to think about thinking.Co-author Kathy Sierra was one of Sun's first employees to teach brave, early adopter customers how to use EJB. She has the scars. But besides dragging you deep into EJB technology, Kathy and Bert will see you through your certification exam, if you decide to go for it. And nobody knows the certification like they do - they're co--evelopers of Sun's actual exam! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST! But not today, of course
Best! It does not cover EJB3, as it's outdated, but few years ago it was great! Not sure if there is 2nd or 3rd editions, probably they are more updated, but the one I read was about EJB, which is an interesting technology but so terribly heavy-weight, led in raise of Spring framework, etc. (I am getting into history now, sorry!.. ;-)

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing -- confusing with lots of jargon
Had high hopes for the book, with cartoons and all. But they got into lots of agonizingly boring technical detail without putting it into a clear context. The explanations could have been much clearer by providing that context.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable even if you want to use EJB 3.0
This book helped me to understand what is enterprise how they fit together how to create EJB 2.0 actually it let you have a strong understanding of J2EE concepst.the authors are very experienced and their books are really the best and should be best ev er selling

3-0 out of 5 stars Outdated but still good for EJB 2.X folks out there
This was a great book for me, ( had to use wrath of EJB 2.1 in several projects =( ). So when EJB 3 came out and i went through EJB 3 ( via Oreilly's book ) i was amazed, pleased and overjoyed.

The new Exam covers EJB3. However if you are still planning to give EJB 2.X exam, this is BEST book you'll buy. It guides you step by step towards steep learning curve that EJB comes with and makes it real easy to remember things.

I am usually critical of Head First "Kids" like format, but this book justifies that because of the subject being such. EJB 2.x deserved this kind of book, where one go one step at a time to understand things.

Book Covers :

1. ) Transaction Management
2. ) All kinds of Beans ( what you do, what container does etc etc. )

What it does not Cover :
1.) EJB 3
2.) Deployment to JBOSS container ( these days with EJB 3 more and more people are adopting JBOSS AS ), neither does it cover deployment specifics of Websphere. ( And in reality Why should it ever do that? this book is only for certification etc. )

If you want to earn SCBCD ( old one ) or if you are working for EJB 2.X project, do yourself the favor of buying this book

Regards
Vyas, Anirudh

2-0 out of 5 stars Book is Out of Date for EJB 3.
This book is out-of date.It does not cover EJB 3 which is the current paradigm. For EJB 1 & 2 it is a good book, but these are not used.If you are preparing for SCBCD this is not the book to use ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely no support - outdated
Please don't buy this book.Material is no longer pertinent nor supported. IBM Press has a more applicable book for the renamed WebSphere Studio...

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible and almost useless book for the cerification!
Spelling errors, wrong figures, inadequate examples, chapters not in order and more! CAUTION: the trial version of Websphere will STOP working after Dec 31, 2005 and is good only for 60 days! Unacceptable. I just bought the book in Nov 2005. No errata on the publisher's web site either. I have never seen such a useless certification book. Buy "Enterprise Java Programming with IBM WebSphere" (unfortunately from IBM Press as well). Be also wary of a good review written by the editor himself!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this
Worst book ever.

The intention of this book is to guide you through an example to understand WSAD 5.0. This starts roughly at page 19. On page 21, the illustrations no longer match the example and you WILL get a compile error. Now, with a little luck, I was able to continue with the example until page 30, where I'm completely stuck!

I would certainly give this book 0 stars if it was possible. Don't buy it! You WILL be disappointed!

1-0 out of 5 stars I AM APPALLED!
The book has absolutely NO source code provision and you cannot just decipher the code from the steps outlined in the book.

Then when I tried to go to the mcpressonline.com site to contact the authors I was unable to do so and I was unable to even post a review of the book over there (DESPITE spending 15 minutes registering).

If you just want to read what the people are writing without testing out the sample code then this is the book for you... but then you might as well read anything ... and it would be a little more entertaining.

Mr. Craig's book is a little better but both these books however lack support and detail. Its excruciating to go through the book when you know some of the steps have been skipped (reminded me of the assumptions made by authors when I was reading an awful math book). So you just wanted to get published, guys? Congrats you can now put that on your resume!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good material for passing the certification test...

Review
IBM offers a number of certifications that revolve around the WebSphere Studio product. The top end certification in this track is the IBM Certified Enterprise Developer, also known as test 287.If you want some help in focusing your study, take a look at this book.

The author lists each certification objective to start the chapter, and then does an introduction of the subject matter, like security. From there, the topic is covered with text, diagrams where needed, and how it relates specifically to the WebSphere Studio package. This last part is where you'll get the most value. There are a number of books that can teach you about JavaServer Pages or servlets.Very few will make the connection to allow you to use WebSphere Studio to create those design elements. To wrap up each chapter, there are a number of questions you can use to assess your knowledge of the topic in preparation for the test.

This book does assume that you already know the J2EE technologies that are being covered. While the author does attempt to provide background material on each topic, you really do need to know it before you get to this point. The focus is on how each technology works with WebSphere for the purpose of passing the test.

In addition to using this book, I would also recommend getting a sample test from a test vendor.Between that and the book, you will stand a very good chance of passing the test.

Conclusion
If your goal is to pass test 287 in the IBM certification track, this is a good choice to focus your study time. ... Read more

Its fun to read and learn! Each page will give you an "AHA" moment !

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect
The seller did a amazing working. the product was shipped in the same day that I paid. thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars The book helped me a lot
The book helped me a lot with my J2EE studies. Everything is being explained in very friendly and understandable way.
I'd like the book to include also explanations about the work with Data Bases though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book but not complete
It is a good book but to get the J2EE 5 Web Component Developer certificate you must use other resources. Nevertheless, I would say that I learned a lot reading this book and it wouldn't be fair to grade it with 4 stars. I recommend this book for people who don't know nothing about web development using Java. However, if you want to be an expert you should read other books for complementing the knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on Servlets & JSP
The Head First series is like a seal of quality, its friendly approach and way of explaining concepts just show that. And Head First Servlets & JSP is no different.

The book is recommended for those who want to learn JEE (the web part), but if you have to have some background on Java, if you don't buy Head First Java first!

The book starts showing some concepts on the Internet, how servers work, pages and HTML. ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! They can make computers look much simpler and easy to learn.
Then, they show some simple web app. and explain it, then you'll see that this small app. got some problems (the HTML and Java code are mixed, making it painfully hard to maintain and understand) so they introduce other concepts like JSP, and they progress, showing that scriptlets in JSP are terrible too, so they present JSTL and so on. Even Enterprise Design Patterns are covered.

I found the book covers pretty well all the non-framework part of JEE, that is just Sun technology, no Struts, JSF, Hibernate, Spring, etc. But that's an excellent intro for Java Enterprise Edition. And of course, probably the best book for the Sun Certified Web Components Developer (SCWCD), with a lot of exercises in the last pages of each chapter. Every topic for the SCWCD is covered.

Definitely recommended! ... Read more

Product Description
Primarily Written for those who want to earn the Sun Certified System Administrator (SCSA) certification for Solaris 10, this guide presents full coverage of the official objectives for both the required exams: CX-310-200 and CX-310-202. In spite of the laser sharp focus on the exam objectives, this is not a cram style book. Written in a classroom-based teaching style, this book presents material in a sequential fashion: topics and chapters build upon the previously covered topics and chapters. There is no hopping from topic to topic. An introductory chapter for beginners and a cohesive, concise, yet comprehensive presentation of the material makes it a self contained book that requires no prior experience in Solaris or UNIX. Even after passing the exam, you will find yourself coming back to use this book as an on-the-job reference.

Full coverage of exam topics includes:

  • Basic and advanced Solaris 10 installation
  • Managing file systems and core dumps
  • Performing user and security administration
  • Managing network printers and system processes
  • Performing system backups and restores and managing storage volumes
  • Managing naming services
  • Managing role based access control and system messaging
  • Understanding fundamentals of TCP/IP networking and managing network services

The book features complete details on all exam objectives, 250+ practice questions, step-by-step exercises, on-the-job elements, a two-minute drill at the end of each chapter that reviews the key points in the chapter, and chapter self-tests. The CD contains MasterExam practice exam software with all new questions, a Searchable electronic book, and a second practice exam (with free online registration). ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book
It seemed to me that this book was written by and edited by persons whose first language is NOT English.I can stand a typo or two, but this book got on my nerves - and the typos were in critical exam related verbiage - ie: the nits that the exam picks!

Also when I did the exam, and looked up the references, some were not on the page/in the section specified, or were not there at all.The quiz and the exam were the same questions - exactly. The same goes for the "bonus" downloadable quiz and exam. And the cd version of the exam only covers part one of the test, so you never get what you expected when you bought the book.

Had I known what I was getting, I'd have just bought the two Caulkin books and not wasted my time.

2-0 out of 5 stars I passed 310-200 with 65% - not good as sole study guide
I used this book to study for 310-200 exam 1 and ONLY JUST passed the exam (passed with 65% on 7/29/09). The only reason I passed is because I've been supporting Solaris 10 for 3 years. The book does not provide the depth necessary to really learn those features you haven't used extensively. For the 310-202 exam 2, I purchased a web-based course from SUN with ePractice exams. This was much more in-depth covering Zones, ZFS, Jumpstart, Name Services, RBAC and other topics each in their own chapter/module. These are complex topics that are very deep and broad. This book cannot cover those topics in sufficient depth by combining Zones, Jumpstart, Flash Archives into one chapter. These should EACH get a chapter to cover the material in sufficient depth to understand and make the necessary links. And I saw NO mention of WAN Booting at all! No mention of the ldap_client_file and ldap_client_cred files or what each contain. This was on the exam! Because I used additional material for exam 2, I recently passed exam2 (12/29/09) with 82%. Exam 2 is much harder than exam 1 and covers much more information.

If you already have this book, don't rely soley on this book to pass the exam. At least buy a good Solaris 10 reference book to walk you through the topics and use this book to hit all the important key points for the exam. Even memorizing this book will not give you the understanding of the topics to correctly answer questions. The exam will give you 9 commands and ask you to choose the three commands that will each solve the stated problem. If you haven't learned the Core and Crash Dump management topic, you won't understand how to temporarily disable core files from being created and redirect core files to all go to a specific directory.

My suggestion - Download VMWARE Server (free) and install, Download Solaris 10 x86 (free) and install 3 instances of Solaris 10 in separate virtual machines. Boot these virtual machines and run through each topic. You'll want a dual or quad core machine with 4GB ram minimum. Consider purchasing "Solaris 10: The complete reference" but also download the PDF files on Solaris 10 Administration (free) from SUN. Print the PDFs and have them bound (about $5 per binding at kinkos, staples, officemax). Use these as your reference material and write your notes in them. For each exam topic, make sure you've used the utility or service in the solaris 10 virtual machines. Lastly, purchase a used SUN SPARC machine ($150-$200) to run through OpenBoot config and advanced installation from OpenBoot.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good
Nice book, enough to pass the test probably. Very very basic topics on Solaris, how to install, navigate, manage devices, create directories, perform backups, etc. Very good for beginners. Nothing specific on Solaris architecture x86 or SPARC boot process or PROM, or anything on hardware, which is ok because the book is designed for administrators. For stuff like I think Sun books are the best. However, administrators should also be able to perform necessary steps on configuring new devices, mapping and managing external storage. This book barely covers external storage mapping or hardware installation and configuration.

Good explanation on installation of Solaris 10, configuring network and file systems. Certainly one of the best books for the beginners.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Solaris Book
The book has very little coverage of the Solaris Material, doesn't cover all the exam topics, the questions after the chapeters and the sample test has nothing to do with the actual Solaris 10 Test.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good baseline skills for the exam but will not make you pass
This book is a good read and has some great information but it will not help you pass the certification test.Knowing everything in the book and the quiz answers will get you to about 45% on the test and the rest is found either through experience or the Sun website.

I did use this book for my studies as did a number of my co-workers.It is helpful but don't count on it ace the test. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book to get you started in JDBC Programming
This is a really good book to get you started in JDBC Programming. It does expect you to know a little bit about object oriented programming and Java.If you don't have this basic knowledge, I recommend you get a book that covers Core Java Development to fulfill this need.

This book provides a lot of useful examples for developing SQL queries and PL/SQL data manipulation functionality. It shows you how to write functions, procedures, and packages in PL/SQL, which I found useful.Remember, however, that this covers Oracle 9i.I was programming a jsp web site that was using Oracle 10g and some of the functionality does not work the same in 10g as it does in 9i.But if you can't find a book on 10g, then get this book.

In addition, the part that I found very helpful was the writing of Java jsp methods to invoke the calls the PL/SQL Data Manipulation Scripts.

In summary, this book will help you with the Oracle and JDBC side of programming and give you good examples. This is not an all inclusive book, however. If you're programming JSPs, then you'll also need a good book on JSP programming.I recommend the Murach Java Servlets and JSP 2nd Edition to fulfill this need. With these 2 books, I was able to do some pretty cool JSP/JDBC development.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent work
Rarely one comes across a book so complete as this one. What I liked the most in the book was COMPLETENESS in its discussion. Must say that the author is very precise and consistent in his approach for all topics throughout the book. Just like Mr. Tom Kyte, (Does he need any introduction?), the author too does not hesitate in sharing his personal preferences on dos and don'ts and also shares his personal preferences on the books for advance readings.Advance Java Programmers might be little disappointed if they evaluate book from Java Programming perspective alone but the book is mainly related to JDBC programming for the Oracle Environment and he has covered much more than that for that matter.I must say that for quite sometime I was looking for a book of exactly this kind, and sure this has found a permanent place in my bookshelf now.A brilliant work by Jason Price, will look for more such books from him in future!

5-0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read
I've been programming with Java and Oracle for about 3 years now, and this book shines the light on things like best practices when using Java and Oracle together. This book is a must have if you are using Java and Oracle: kind of like the Thomas Kyte book "Expert-one-on-one" is now.

This book teaches you not only how to do things, but _why_ you want to do things a certain way. Because of that, this book is streets ahead of anything else available on Java and Oracle - even the other Oracle Press Java books.

This book even teaches you how to use JDeveloper to create Java programs.

If you're a newby or an expert, this book will be useful when using Java and Oracle together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nicely Done AND a Quick Read!
I wish more books were written like this.Price did a nice job of balancing depth with usability as well as explaining JDBC standard features with Oracle JDBC specific extensions (and their performance characteristics). It was a very quick read yet I didn't feel slighted in any way.I can see referencing this text frequently as I occasionally require to tap into more Oracle specific features from within Java (JDBC) applications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book
If you buy just one Oracle Java book, this is the one to buy!Just the tuning chapter is well worth the price.

Also covers Java stored procedures, EJB programming, servlets and JSP. I liked the conciseness of the book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Technical
I purchased this book based on previous reviews and it seems it was not correct decision to buy based on reviews. I am not sure why title is "Oracle JDeveloper 10g for Forms & PL/SQL Developers" because book is saying all technical stuff about Java and others however knowing oracle forms and PL/SQL will not really help you to understand what it says about JDeveloper and there is no step-by-step approach so that user can try that and can understand by going through some exercises.

Most technical books give examples and how to use the development tools, however this book does not tell you how to use JDeveloper, some examples are there from Chapter 1 to 8 however they are not really helpful in understanding concepts because when you start working on those examples, at some point you don't know how to do that and you will not be able to complete it. Books explains some concepts from Chapter 1 to Chapter 8, but the examples are not complete that you can try by self and learn the concepts before going through 2 sample applications, starting from Chapter 9.

I am still at Chapter 7, not sure about the remaining chapters and also two sample applications. So please don't be under wrong impression that if you are an Oracle PL/SQL or Forms Developer, you can learn JDeveloper by going over this book and couple of sample applications given in this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars ok book
this book is ok.
just like all other oracle books, they just "talk too much"..
to much junk and too little meat...
almost feel like they are putting in too much filler to make it to a
500-600 page book....
if you get the class notes from oracle's classes...it's much more compact
and to the point.
Too bad there is not much other jdeveloper book out there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction
Being a traditional pl/sql developer, I was drawn to the title of the book immediately.I know I need to eventually buckle down and learn Java, but what better way than by drawing parallels to pl/sql and Forms.

I like the hands-on examples that has you build a fairly complete application from scratch.I say fairly complete because its only a 500 page book and it allows the reader to go out and research ways to improve it.

One of my favorite parts of the book is a summary section that shows up after a large chunk of instructions called "What did you just do?"This sums up what the reader just performed - explaining in layman's terms what you actually just did.

Although I'm sure you can get similar tutorials on OTN somewhere, having a book to flip back through is always nice.
