5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST, but too lengthy
I used this book to pass tho of the exams. I am confident I will pass the rest. But this book is boringly lengthy. Again it is tooooo lengthy. He is adding many non-relevant text. Almost 20 percent of the book is unnecessary stuff.

BUT, it is the most accurate book. In other books, you can find a lot of errors. This has few. NO book on CNE is better than this book. Some other books are easy to read and understand. But, they are not enought to pass the exam!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not helpful at all
I received this book as a free offer from McGraw-Hill a few years ago when I was new to networking.I learned very little from it.I am so glad I only paid for the shipping and handling. If you are new to the field andneed a good study guide, don't buy this one!

1-0 out of 5 stars A rip off
This book doesn't even deserve 1 star at all. What a waste of money and paper. The authors have no clue on what it is meant by "Study Guide"

1-0 out of 5 stars useless!! Don't buy it!!!
The book is about 900 pages and it wasted 233 pages for introduction of CNA/CNE, the cert, and the advantage of the cert, etc.For 4.x Administratin, it only provide 22 pages (and there is 16 pages forQuestions).Do you think that good studying content can be included in 40pages?? You know the answer!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading Title
This is easily the most misleading title I'm sad to say. I've wasted 60.00. It has no real information to prepare you for the Novell certification tests.e.g. Service and Support, probably the most complextest, gets 38 pages; only 16 that contain info and not a fraction of itcovers what is on the test. If you use this as a study guide, you will NOTpass one test.

About the only thing it does is tell you the titles of thetests and you can get that for free from Novell. Also, it stresses theimportance, and with this book the necessity, of taking the Novell coursesand taking GOOD NOTES. Yet the cover boldly states "Master thematerial quickly - without costly courses."

If I could have lookedthrough it at the bookstore, it would have been in my hands less than 2minutes before it was back on the shelf.

I'm stuck. I'm trying to helpothers avoid getting stuck.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing outcome of expectations
This book is more or less an insult to McGraw-Hill's reputation. It haslittle to add to help gain real knowledge of how-to, hands-on experiences. The enclosed CD is a come-on that simply reiterates what is in the textquestions (that is, if you can get the CD to run at all). There must beother sources out there that are more helpful in helping one get realnetwork knowledge and experience. ... Guides you through the entire NetWare 5 network from the administrators viewpoint. Covers all important Novell administrative utilities and command-line programs. Leads readers through NetWare installation, from design, through testing and deployment, including automated installs.Amazon.com Review
Interested in becoming a Certified Novell Engineer (CNE) onthe most recent release of NetWare? The Exam Cram for NetWare 5Administration CNE/CNA is a highly readable and navigable guide touse as a good first step. Though Novell may not have the marketcaché it once did, the NetWare operating system still appearsto have a large installed base and the Utah company continues to crankout new versions of its flagship product.

Like all quality exampreparation books, this one provides information on the when, what, where, why, and how of much of the CNE exam. For example, you can findout everything from where exams are held to what trick questions mightcrop up. Also included is a 77-question sample exam, along with ananswer key and an extensive glossary.

In addition to its testcoverage, this book explains core components of NetWare, such as theNovell Directory Services (NDS). It gives the basic concept and then,in the case of NDS, for example, moves on to objects, tree structures, and the like, always doubling back to reiterate the information. Theopening page of each chapter contains two lists--terms you'll need tounderstand and techniques you'll need to master--a feature weespecially liked because it's a great way to help the reader maintainfocus throughout the book. --Sarah L. 5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book
I loved this book and I love the whole Exam Cram series. All the certification tests I have passed can be directly credited to the help this series. It is true that this particular book has several typographical/editorial errors. This can be a little frustrating at times.I subsequently loaned this book to two other individuals that have passed their certification tests with this book's assistance. The consensus among us is that, in a peculiar way, the typographical/editorial errors force you to verify your understanding of the materials. If you are unaware of these errors, your grasp of the subject matter is simply too loose to attempt to take the exam.It is nice to know that you understand the material even when the book is wrong. These typographical/editorial errors are a very small part in proportion to the comprehensive coverage and testing contained in this book.I would highly recommend this text to all parties interested in becoming certified.I have great faith in the whole Exam Cram series and will continue to use them in my test preparation.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Disapointment to the Exam Cram Series
This sould not be a tool you use to pass the exam!

I usually use the Exam Crams on the last week before the exam. After using this book I was lucky I passed. It has example questions that are wrong and many mistakes. One questions about Country being a required objects is answered 2different ways.(it is not a required object!)

The technical editors shoudbe embarased. If this book was proofread at all.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very poor actually - Not to be trusted for exam success
I thought the Exam Cram for NT Server 4 was the key to my success in getting my MCP, so I thought the same would apply to an Exam Cram for Novell... Wrong!... This book has some good information in it, but it hasHUGE holes in the presented information which is hopeless for the exam...The sample tests are nothing like the actual, and the book has manymistakes in it... Initially I read this book along with David JamesClarke's CNA Study Guide (which is excellent)... This book only confused mebecause it seems to follow it's own study path which didn't flow with theClarke book... The Clarke book was written specifically for the Novell examand is authorised by Novell... That should say it all...

When I threwthis book away and concentrated on the Clarke book my study began to flowagain...

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as useful as expected
The information in this book is well laid out and the explanations of many topics are very good. However, the book has many problems that keep me from recommending it to anyone.First of all, I think it doesn't haveenough detail.Unless you are already familiar with the topics (and inthat case, why are you reading this book?), you might have a hard timeunderstanding some of the explanations. For example, the very briefexplanation of disk suballocation could only be meaningful to someonealready pretty familiar with that topic. In addition, there isn't enoughdetail to help you with some of the test questions!Ugh.I think there isenough to pass if you review the book carefully and combine it with otherbooks and resources.Next, there are way too many errors in this book. The author and editors should be embarrassed.I know I would beembarrassed to have my name on anything with so many glaring and confusingmistakes. For example, the two-page example of file security, which issupposed to help summarize and clarify the chapter, is totally wrong.Youcan see in part of the example the rights "flowing down" or beinginherited, as they should be, and in the piece of the example next to it,where nothing is different, the rights are not being inherited. Many ofthe end-of-the-chapter review questions have the wrong answers andexplanations. Some chapters have contradictory, wrong, or vagueinformation. In some places, the book unexpected changes terms and startsusing the wrong terminology...as if the person who typed the book up wasconfused.I found myself constantly turning to other NetWare 5 referencebooks and Novell's webpage to figure out where the book was wrong or toclarify vague points. In the end, I felt like I couldn't trust theinformation in it.I threw it away right after taking the test--because ofall of the errors, it is not very helpful as a reference and I wouldn'twant to give it to someone else to use.I still give the book two stars, because if you combine it with another, better book, use other sources, andare already somewhat familiar with NetWare, you could find the bookhelpful.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very poorly edited and does not cover all exam objectives
I am an experienced 4.11 CNA, but was not able to make an acceptable score on any of the practice tests after reading this book until I bought CNE Clarke Notes book. With the Clarke Notes book I passed the exam with a 93.Don't waste your time or money with the Exam Cram for CNA 5 book. However,I did find the Exam Cram for NDS Design & Implementation book very, very helpful in passing that test. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful but not up-to-date
This book covers more or less all you need to know, and more. However it is out of date (this becomes very obvious as you start to read it), and contains both a lot of errors (in the text and tests) and covers subjectsthat are no longer part of the NetWare 4.1 Admin exam (messaging servicesand fault tolerance for example).

The book could be very good, but itneeds a re-write. It's useful as supplementary reading, but I would notfeel confident using it as the only source of reference material.

2-0 out of 5 stars An Otherwise Good Book in Dire Need of Editing
Were it not for the amazing number of typos and editing errors in thisbook, it would have made for a wonderful stand-alone guide to the 50-613exam.

It gets two stars from me due to the almost uselessness of theself-help tests at the end of each chapter.Every test had one (most hadmore) questions which when you went back to the reading material, theanswer they gave was incorrect.

The exception was Chapter 5, which almostcaused me to throw the book away. This chapter dealt with NDS rights, andthe examples they gave were correct and very useful! But the self-helpexam included several of these problems, and with one exception, all werecalculated wrong.

While I did find some minor typos in the actual readingmaterial, I found it was generally accurate. It did tend to ramble on,often repeating itself in subsequent paragraphs, as if it had been typed onthe fly.

To conclude: This book is a good book for brushing up existingknowledge of Netware 4.11 Administration, however due to the errors, particularly in the self-help tests, I would not recommend it as astand-alone study guide.

Network administrators don't necessarily have to understandspecific procedures to use within software packages. Rather, administrators must have a deep, general knowledge of what's goingon. The general skills required of a network administrator are notunlike those required of a medical doctor, and the "networkdoctor" motif of this book is both entertaining andappropriate.

Most of this book is about general troubleshootingpractice (keeping records, testing possibilities, and eliminating themone by one) and about procedures unique to fixing problems inNetWare. Clarke endorses specific products (for example, he cites AMPtools and connectors as the best he's worked with and the least likelyto cause trouble), which is the kind of information new CNEs need.

The author attacks troubleshooting generally, describing NSEPro andother diagnostic tools, and then moves on to particular troublespots. He devotes entire chapters, full of hints and procedures, tonetwork interface cards, hard drives, client machines, andprinters. He then takes a turn for the theoretical--also part of theCNE exam--to discuss network topologies and protocols in depth. Anextremely handy appendix correlates exam topics to specific pages inthe book. Quiz questions appear throughout the text, and a companionCD-ROM includes a database of I/O card properties and a testsimulator.

Before you spring for this book, consider Novell'sCNE Study Set: IntranetWare/NetWare 4.11, a box set that includesthis book, Novell's CNEStudy Guide: IntranetWare/NetWare 4.11, and a two-user versionof NetWare 4.11, for a lower price than it would cost to buy thecomponents separately. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best CNE books out there!
I like the way Clarke organized the relevant topics in passing the CNE exam---adding Humor to a boring concept. This book also contains stuff that would help you even for MCSE. It is really a good source of knowledge forboth CNE, CNAs etc. wannabees.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book - highly recommended
Clarke has an easy way of presenting what is otherwise complicated technical concepts. The book is organized well for the reader to take breaks in the middle of topics.

3-0 out of 5 stars Technically complete, but info is hidden in useless garbage.
It's too bad that Mr. Clarke feels the need to share his thoughts on Zen, include useless quizzes totally unrelated to NetWare or networking, and offer crossword and wordsearch puzzles instead of useful, real-life quizzesand tests. This book was quite complete as of it's publication date, butit is a little out-of-date now.Mr. Clarke also confuses readers withinconsistent terminology at times, once referring to a server as adedicated 'workstation' rather than a dedicated computer, and a continuingreference to a 'central print queue' rather than just 'print queue.'Hisconstant medical analogies and references are mundane and worthless.Thebook is written to about an eighth grade level, not an eighth grade readinglevel, but an eighth grade intelligence level. It's like reading a child'sbook of NetWare. The book does appear to be organized well and thenecessary information is contained in the book. It's just unfortunate thatit is buried between and beneath endless pages of medical school wannabediatribes, 'Zen' garbage, and off-topic quizzes as filler. The book isnearly 1,000 pages, but if the useless garbage were removed, it would bemore like 600-700 pages. It's truly too bad because Mr. James does appearto know NetWare very well.I teach computer courses for a business collegethat uses this book as a text.It is extremely difficult to teach fromthis book because of the filler and the lack of useful quizzes and tests inthe book. The Clarke Tests on the CD are good, but are filled with stupidsound clips from movies and TV that are of varying volume, some quiet andsome quite loud. They are very unprofessionally recorded and very annoyingduring testing. The tests on the CD included with the New Riders MCSEbooks are far superior to the Clarke tests, however. The saddest realityis that this is apparently the best book available other than Novell's owntraining books which are much more expensive and are apparently onlyavailable through authorized training centers (with training courses).

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the book to understand networking fundamentals!
As an MCSE who has been teaching Networking Essentials to systems engineering students I figured that I would breeze through the Novell Networking Technologies course.Whoa! The Novell course goes intosubstantially more detail than the Microsoft course.I found Clarke's bookto be an excellent guide through the maze of material that Novell requiresfamiliarity with. And it was a pleasure to notice that this book seems tobe the foundation of many other guides and lectures that I have beenexposed to both in Novell and Microsoft curriculums. The author does gooverboard on Zen commercials, puzzles, brain teasers, and the like but itis easy to skip over these parts when you have time only to study materialyou will need for an exam (or in my case, for my next lecture).

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book I have ever seen.
It does not matter if you are studying for your CNE or CCIE, this book covers the basics of the OSI model and it will get you passing your CNE exams and get your on your way to the more superior Cisco certificationseasily.

I got my CNE with this book and I did not use any others. It wasnot boring like other books I glanced at.This book not only helped mewith my CNE and is helping me with my Cisco certifications, but it alsohelped me review for my A+ certification.

Absolutely wonderful book, great to use for MCSEs wanting to catch up to the knowledge level of a CNEtoo. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Certification Book I Have Ever Read
I'm a CNE since Version 3.X.I have took a lot of test reading only theWhite book and practice. The results: I had to take test twice even threetimes before passing it.For the NW5 Update, I took the course and readthe white book twice, but I also bought this book. The results:Passed thefirst time!!It's incredible how this books wraps all you need to know inorder to pass the test.It is easy to read and give you clues of what topay special attention. If you are studing for the update test, this is theonly book you will have to read (you will need hands-on, as well).

5-0 out of 5 stars This is all you need.
I originally got my CNE back in 1994 - the 3.11 days. That was the lasttime Novell came out with a CCR (Continuing Certification Requirement) -the update to 4.11.That was the only test I flunked the first time andsqueaked by the second time. Now I'm working in an NT environment andhaven't even touched a Novell server in over a year.Needless to say, thelatest CCR had me worried.I wanted to keep my CNE, but didn't want tospend thousands of dollars learning a NOS I'd probably never use.Idecided to get Clarke Notes only and sink or swim.I'm happy to say Ipassed the test on the first try after two days reading and studying thisbook. Thanks, David! Now if we could only talk him in to developing aWindows 2000 curriculum.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Read & Good Pointer to Test Objectives
The book is very easy to read and the author has even put in material to make it fun to read.If you want your professional reading to be as dry as a bone, that feature may jolt you.The book is a good general referencefor NW 5 and not just for test-takers.However, the prospective test-takershould look at Appendix B.It provides the Novell test objectives and givethe reference to the pages in the book where each objective is covered.Ifyou've gone over the official text so many times that you're about blind, this explains the same things (plus more) in a very clear manner.

5-0 out of 5 stars #1 Novell Study Guide
Undeniably the best study guide around. I scored a 780 out of a possible 800 with this book, and a great quizzer, and with 12-16 hours of study time. You can't beat the quality of the of the material for the price. As aMaster CNE I have taken tons of tests and using Clarke Notes is always theway to go.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This book is by a big margin the best certification study book I have come across. It is to the point, clearly written and more importantly, set out sequentialy to reflect the official Novell Education training materials.Ipassed my exam with this book plus some eight months experience ofNetWare5.

My hat off to David James Clarke for this book, I have nohesitation giving it five stars. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great, but out dated
First, if you are looking for a clear and compact source of information to review for Novell 4certification tests, this was a great book! Unfortunatly, today (March, 1998) the book is outdated and needs to be replaced with a new version to cover the IntranetWare CNE. However, there is still valuable information here. The book is organized by test, is set-up specifically for test review and preparation, and covers most of the info of the current tests (70 to 80%). Realize, however, that the current tests are not covered completely and Building Intranets with IntranetWare is not included. This is (was) the best test prep/review book I've seen. Please Dorothy, give us a second edition of your GREAT book!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
I used this book and Self Test software together to pass the test on Oct 22nd, just in time for the deadline. I liked this book better than his past super hero comic strip CNE guides. He covered the topics completely and provided good lab scenarios that were useful for the exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read it once, passed the exam
Since the purpose of this book is to teach the reader what is necessary to upgrade their Novell CNE 5 certification to a Novell CNE 6 the review is rather simple and to the point.I read through it, skimmed through it a second time, looked at the included CD and reviewed the questions at the end of each chapter, took the exam and passed it the first time. That makes it pretty clear that all the information is in here to pass the exam, all you have to do is study it.Since it made upgrading my certification a snap I would have to give it a very high recommendation to anyone seeking to do the same.

1-0 out of 5 stars Exercise caution when using this book as a reference
I've never read a technical book that would contain so many inaccuracies and even false information, not to mention numerous minor incorrect or doubtful statements.
I'm now just in the middle of the book but I feel fed up with having to go to Novell's official NetWare 6 documentation in order to verify accuracy or just to make sense of what the author talks about in his book.
In some cases like, for example, in the section called Solving eDirectory Migration Problems (p.129-133), it's obvious to every educated, experienced NDS/NetWare administrator that the author speaks non-sense. God forbid you to follow what this "NetWare guru" advises !
I can't believe that Mr. Clarke is a Certified Novell Instructor who wrote so many books about NetWare and that Novell approved them with the "Novell Authorized" stamp. Well, I'm not so sure about other his books (I guess, I was lucky not to buy them) but I would definitely never recommend this one to anybody.

Whoever is going to use this "Study Guide", either to prepare for an exam or, even more importantly, in real life projects and daily administration, be sure to double-check correctness of all the info it provides that sounds suspicious or makes a little sense.

5-0 out of 5 stars ! ! ! This study guide NAILS it ! ! !
Clarke hits every topic on the exam without all the silly 'Super Hero' metaphors (thank you, DJ). If you're not familiar with the utilities (iManager, Migration Wizard, ICE Utility, etc...) there are whitepapers on the Novell Support Site you'll need as well. Also keep in mind that the NW6 support pack (currently 3) will supply minor discrepancies with the text in the book (really not a big deal). Armed with this book as well as the info above, you can probably pass this exam without STS or Transcender (I bought Transcender anyway 'cause it was cheaper than taking the exam again: insurance).

So, for what it's worth, I HIGHLY recommend this study guide!

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Cne," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Cne in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Cne when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Cne, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Decent overall guide, but do not use to pass tests.
I am currently a CNE for Netware 3, I was needing to pass the Building Intranets test to upgrade my certification for Intranetware. This book gave a good overview, was easy to read and quick to learn from. The main problemwith this book became painfully obvious after using CNE Quizzer 4.5 andfailing a couple times that there is no way to pass this test using thisbook. The book lacked the fine details that Novell likes to test you on. Iobtained my CNE certification in 9 1/2 weeks using mainly Novell coursebooks. There is some irony in how I passed Building Intranets. Afterfailing the test, I went to a book store to look up objectives that Imissed. The irony is that I found a paperback study guide for intranetwarepublished by the same company that published this book. This book was lessexpensive, more detailed had sections with questions, and a CD-Rom with aquizzer on it. In less than 15 minutes I found where I went wrong on thetest and went back and kicked the test out with a 636 (passing score was575). Although I did not buy this book, it looked like a good alternativeto Novell books. From now on, I plan on using only Novell course materialso I don't waste my time or money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Buy, Beg or steal the Novell Courseware
I bought the book originally because the organization and language seemed straightforward. Luckily I purchased a copy of CNE Quizzer 4.5 from Certify.com to pretest since the accompanying CD-ROM proved worthless. It was after doing the pretests that I became painfully aware that the bookfell short in three very important areas:1) Terminology-Novell exams arevery specific and the book isn't. 2) Detail-There just isn't enough detailon Object or File System Rights. 3)Examples\Case Studies-Very few reviewquestions and no real case studies.

When I identified the failings ofthe study guide, I found myself referring back to the Novell PressIntranetWare Administrator's Handbook By Kelley Lindberg to fill in thegaps. Although it's not a study-guide, it was more valuable than theMoncur\Chellis book and has a permanent place in my crash kit.

If itwasn't for the CyberPass pretest and Lindberg's book, I would have failedthe CNA test. It's sad that there aren't any better guides on the market-soat this point I'm fronting the money for actual courseware.

2-0 out of 5 stars If you want to pass, buy something else
Sybex would be the only book I would suggest if you are taking a Microsoft test, I used them to obtain my MCSE, however for Novell tests they just don't cover enough information to pass the test. This book is way toexpensive and I would suggest buying the Novell Press books.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good NetWare review, but not for test takers
Unlike other study guides, this book is much better laid out and attempts to present information in a logical manner. However, there are many issues missing and certain sections that should be heavily emphasized for the test (the design and implemenation steps) are merely mentioned. If you know nothing, read this book and take a test you will fail.

Needs much more detailed info and examples. The sample questions are nothing like the actual test questions. The CD is pretty much freeware stuff. Whole test sections and questions are missing (ex. there is nothing on client migration strategy or partitioning examples)

Unfortunately as a whole it's just another of the countless lack-luster CNE study guides with better than average layout...can't ANYBODY make a decent CNE study guide? Maybe the people writing these books should spend a little more time implementing NetWare networks and less time writing books. I find it hard to believe the authors really modeled this book for the exam preparation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Buy the official Novell version
After trying to take the tests for CNE: Administration and CNE: Advanced Administration, I am of the opinion that this book is not the ideal choice. The exam questions are very picky about language, and you would do better to have official Novell brand material to study from. This book does a decent job of hitting the highlights, but an official Novell student manual would be more helpful and would help the reader avoid having to guess what Novell meant. It's sort of like having a study guide for the King James Bible vs. the NIV Bible and having the exam be on one specific version. This is my opinion after having thoroughly read this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The practice questions are very close to the actual test.
I read the David Clarke 4.11 books then decided to switch to the CNE 5 track. I read this book one time through with no other reference to any CNE 5 book and I aced the exam. This book actually covers more than the TestObjectives. Excellent book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good companion book.
I liked this book because it gave me what I needed to know to comfortably pass the 50-634 exam without getting bogged down with too much detail.I used it as a study aid along with my class textbook and selftest software. Good discussion on time synchronization, WTM.NLM, and merging. There arequestions at the end of each chapter and at the end of the book that can beused to really test your knowledge.Would be better if these questionswere on CD or the publisher's website.I liked the treatment the book gaveregarding an IP environment - it enabled me to answer two or three realexam test questions that I otherwise may have missed.I really rate thisbook at 4 1/2 stars, almost a 5.The Cram Sheet of key facts provided atthe front of the book is more of a marketing gimmick than anything else;it's OK for a quick review before you go into the exam but don't rely on itfor anything else. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Uneven and incomplete
Based on the previous reviews of this book, I relied on this book as my main source to get me through the exams, and I was very disappointed. The Advanced Admin section was adequate, but just barely. I passed the exam, however there were several questions on the exam on points that were not even mentioned in the book. The NDS Design & Implementation section, however was much worse. One of the keys to passing the test is knowing the concept of how Subordinate Reference Replicas are placed inside and out, and how to read a server chart to determine where these SR Replicas are placed. The book mentions how these types of replicas are placed in one or two very cryptic sentences and only mentions that you need to know how to read a server chart without actually explaining it. I failed this test miserably on my first try. After that I visited a friend of mine who is a CNE, and she drew me a server chart and explained how to determine how SR replicas are placed, and I 'got it' in about 5 minutes - it really isn't all that difficult of a concept. I retook the test one week after the initial attempt and aced it. In fairness, the section on Design & Implementation does cover EVERYTHING ELSE you need to know for the exam in sufficient detail and explains it very well. So, if you rely on this book for the Design and Implementation exam, make sure to know everything in that section of the book, and then seek out an actual CNE and have them explain to you how to place Subordinate Reference Replicas. I cannot overemphasize how important that is for the exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the larger study guide
This book is the exact same thing as the larger CNE study guide but without all of the stupid ACME jokes and cross word puzzles. Many of the passages in the larger guide are just copied and pasted into this book. There are a few things however that just aren't covered in enough detail. You have to have a good knowledge before you read this book.If you are going to use this alone I would make sure you have a practice server to play with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beleive it or not, this is all that you need
I know that this book is suppose to augment the main CNE book. But quite honestly I only read this book for both tests and passed both of them in one day with just reading this book.I found it to be very good and accurate for these tests and had no problems passing both tests. And if I can do it with only reading this book, anyone can.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Choice!
The author clearly intends this book to be supplemental to his larger study guides, or to some respectable knowledge of networking and NetWare in particular. As such, there's nothing like it on the market. If you can'tpass the test with this book, regroup and buy a Dummies title on basicnetworking.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great choice!

Includes complex user administration requirements, customized user logins, application launcher setups, and more. Explains integration of wide and local-area networking links and technologies, and use of specialized routing protocols and configurations.Amazon.com Review
Though it delves into much more sophisticated topics than itssister publication on basic NetWare 5 administration, ExamCram for Advanced NetWare 5 Administration manages to maintain thesame pragmatic tone. For example, in the discussion of upgradingindividual servers as well as entire networks to NetWare 5, readerswill find material on minimum hardware and configuration requirementsfor the latest version of the Novell operating system. In addition, there are lists of pre, during, and posts steps, some of which, suchas powering down servers before upgrading them, may be obvious to moreseasoned administrators but are good reminders nonetheless.

Thesections that cover more radical departures for NetWare--in otherwords, the ability to exist in a pure IP network--are also wellconstructed. Good, succinct explanations of IP addressing, DHCP(dynamic host configuration protocol), and DNS (domain naming service)and their interdependence, followed by detailed directions on how theyare implemented in NetWare 5, make for a solid combination.

Anaddendum to each chapter contains related Web sites and the number andtitles of relevant Technical Information Documents, or TIDs. Thesample questions and answers at the end of each chapter are alsohelpful, as are the excellent glossary and appendices on commands, utilities, and sample configuration files. --SarahL. Roberts-Witt

5-0 out of 5 stars NetWare 5.0 Test Prep and NOT for NetWare 5.1 Test Prep
Hello Readers (and to be readers)

I just wanted to make sure you are aware that this book is for the NetWare 5.0 version of the exam. When the courses and corresponding tests were composed for NetWare 5.1 there were some changes. The NetWare 5.1 Advanced Admin course and exam went through MAJOR changes. At this time, BOTH the NetWare 5.0 and 5.1 exams are available so make sure if you use this book you signup for the NetWare 5.0 version of the exam. In addition, there have been several Service Pack updates for NetWare 5.0 and none are addressed in this book since they were not available when the book was written!

For the latest on Novell exam information, check out http://www.novell.com/education and follow the certification links.

Good luck and have fun!

3-0 out of 5 stars Inadequate to pass the exam
From page one, critical mistakes all over the book that force the user tonot only question whether the entire contents are accurate but whether theauthor even has a CNE yet a CNA. The book doesn't follow the courseobjectives nor does it even mention them in the book. The practice testshave misprints and some of the answers are out-right wrong. It scares me tothink that the editor is as popular as the book claims. These people areout to make a buck and did from me, but that won't happen again.

Product Description
The only official CNE Exam guide and the only guide for NetWare 5.1! The most comprehensive tool for the Novell Courses 565, 570, 575, and 580 from best-selling author David James Clarke, IV.

Employers want tech employees who are certified on the latest operating systems. Gain industry recognition, better on-the-job performance, and acquire the knowledge and skills that provide the foundation for CNE and other Novell professional certifications.Amazon.com Review
Novell NetWare remains a big power in corporate networking, which is why it pays to have a Novell certification on your résumé when you go looking for work. Novell's CNE Study Guide for NetWare 5.1 helps you prepare for the whole battery of Certified Novell Engineer (CNE) and Certified NetWare Associate (CNA) exams, and--with the exception of a gap or two you will need to fill in with supplementary documentation or your own experience--earns its cover price. Author David Clarke does a great job of explaining the Novell way of networking: he's eminently patient and obviously subscribes to the philosophy that it's better to explain too much than to assume too much. As a result of his careful approach to his subject, Clarke succeeds both in bringing Novell newcomers up to speed and in connecting new NetWare features--like Novell Storage Services (NSS) and Novell Certificate Server--to old pros' bodies of existing knowledge.

Readers can't expect this book or its companion CD-ROM, taken alone, to prepare them for the CNE tests. The exams are designed to fail people who have only academic (as opposed to hands-on) experience with NetWare, after all. But these learning materials do about as well as can be expected in preparing their readers. Clear prose, combined with helpful conceptual drawings and relevant screen shots, complement sample test questions (both in print and on the CD-ROM). It's a good combination of tutorial, reference, and test-prep material. --David Wall

Topics covered: The subjects Novell has said must be understood by people who wish to pass its battery of Certified Novell Engineer (CNE) tests, including those for courses 565, 570, 575, and 580. Essentially, this means everything about NetWare 5.1, including its installation, Internet support, network services, and relevant troubleshooting strategies. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars An incomplete work by Clarke.
Having learned most of what I know about Netware 4.11 from Clarke's books, I took a leap and bought both the admin and CNE books that he authored for Netware 5.1. I was disappointed. The books lack the anecdotes that break up the monotonous material, and it's evident that Clarke wasn't enthused with writing this book.

Much of the material isn't fully explained. For instance, in the Advanced Administration section, Clarke mentions subordinate reference partitions, but doesn't go on to explain what a subordinate reference is. His explanation of b-trees for NSS volumes is likewise lacking. It could be summed up as a replacement for FAT that allows the volume to mount faster, but instead he concentrates on explaining it's heirarchical properties, losing the reader in the process. A full 100 pages of information new to Netware 5.1 was lost upon me for this very reason.

But in the absense of other study materials for Netware 5.1, you probably don't have much choice but to buy this book if your aim is to obtain a CNE via self-study. If you can get your hands on the Exam Cram books, I highly recommend them as a supplement (good luck getting the exam cram for Advanced Admin, which is out of print). If you use Transcender exams in conjuntion with these books and set up a netware 5.1 server to practice with, you should have absolutely no problem passing the tests. But don't depend on this book alone, because it probably won't suffice.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed too!
I started seriosly my study with this book. The good one is, the style he (the author)talk to us in the book, I really like it!
But some thinks are logical and I understand easierly, but some others really difficult. And if your head is burning, and still you don't understand the meaning, your are demotivated. A little bit later, you find out that not you are mistaken, there are explanations in the book, the can 't be true! That are not translation-mistakes, like from english to german. I compared it with an original english book. And? The it 's the same! How can a Leaf-Object recieve "C" as an Object-Right. Check it under the capital:Netware-Security. Where you can make your own test! The other mistakes are softer, but enough to make you confus.
I wouldn`'t explain everything here, if I could find out who is responsible, to give a chance to modify the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed - -
After passing NetWare Administration 5.1 using the companion CNA 5.1 book as my primary study resource, I was hoping for a similar experience with this book.I am finding that while the CNE 5.1 book does cover much of the material for the remainder of the CNE examinations, it is a bit light in some critical areas.I have expanded my studies with another CNE series from Novell Press, a set of third party CBT's, and even broke down and took the official Advanced Administration 5.1 course.I'm not at all certain that I would have passed Advanced Admin or NDS Design if I had trusted just this book to get me prepared.

My other frustration is that for a new book, it does not attempt to cover the latest version of the NDS Design and Implementation test or the Service and Support exam. Why not?The latest tests have been out there for a while.Like the CNA book, I get the feeling that this book is a slight re-write of the previous 5.0 version and was rushed to publication without attempting to cover everything in the most current versions of these exams.

While I still find this book valuable for CNE test preparation, I do not feel comfortable using it as the main resource for my studies. It certainly is a good secondary resource.

All I have left for my CNE certification is Service and Support and an elective.I will definitely keep using this book to help prepare for S&S, but I am already lining up other resources to fill in the anticipated gaps.

I hope when this book gets updated for Netware 6, the publisher will allow the author to take the time to provide a comprehensive text for those of us who prefer the relaxed pace and flexibility of self study over the shotgun (boom, here it is, we're done) authorized courses - and make certain that all of the objectives from the most recent courses and exams at that time are covered in depth.Perhaps it is time to break this book up into more than one volume to allow room for the needed detail.

BTW, lose the crossword puzzles and the word searches at the end of the chapters. They are next to worthless in helping to make the information stick and pretty much a waste of time. How about putting that effort into a set of sample test questions on one of the companion CD's?

Again, all in all, this is a good book, but for me, it just isn't enough to make me feel totally prepared for the tests.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy way to pass
Novell's CNE Study Guide for NetWare 5.1 really hits the mark.It contains all the information needed to pass the Novell exams.Just by reading this book I was able to pass each required exam in an average of two weeks.I thought the chapters on NDS especially hit the mark.It is a tremendous value considering it covers 4 exams for the price of 1 text. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best, most useful CNA and CNE test prep/reference ever.
Organized by test, perfect for CNA and CNE test prep, expect to pass a test per week.I PASSED A TEST A DAY FOR FOUR DAYS STRAIGHT, then passed 3 tests in 2 weeks while working full time days. With your new CNE-4, expect the book to pay for itself in the first week of your new pay rate increase.....Mine did.Pass a test---get a raise..... ALSO, great DESK REFERENCE organized by subject area. Sections for each test, from CNA 4.1 through 4.1 ADVANCED ADMIN, 4.1 INSTALLATION, 4.1 DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION (NDS trees and replication), NETWORKING TECHNOLOGIES (protocol stacks), SERVICE AND SUPPORT (troubleshooting), AND NETWARE PRINTING....all the neccessary CNE 4.1 tests are presented in a clear and easily understood manner. Each section has enough depth for EXPERT LEVEL on-the-job real-world competence, AND is presented in about 200 pages per test. This makes each test easy to "get your arms around" very quickly; compared to all the other Netware books I've bought (lots), the information just flowed off the page and into my brain. This book made all that "complicated" Netware stuff very understandable. (PS. Take Netware Printing as your elective---so TCP/IP counts towards your MASTER CNE, since you will want to know printing and TCP/IP for today's market) As a desk reference, this book is a first-choice resource for quickly confirming the proper way Netware 4.1 should be installed, how to operate utilities, security issues, and how NDS replication should be configured. ... Novell NetWare has a huge, when installed, code base, andCertified Novell Engineers (CNEs) do a tidy business in maintainingNovell networks. If you're a CNE and want to upgrade your rating toinclude the latest network operating system from Novell, have a lookat Exam Cram: NetWare 4.11 to NetWare 5 Update.

Like theother books in the Exam Cram series, this book doesn't pretend toteach you the material. It's simply a review aid. If you understandthat the authors aim only to help you organize your knowledge andexperience in advance of the test, you'll do fine with the assistanceof this book. Since this book is made for review, you'll find plentyof practice questions in the text (but no CD-ROM).

Authors RandyGrein and Patrick Brown take on the exam objectives in outline form, beginning (after overviews of the exam and NetWare 5) with theoperation of Novell Directory Services (NDS). Upgrading existingNovell installations to NetWare 5 gets coverage, as do the newdevelopments in Internet connectivity (including DNS [Domain NameService], DHCP [Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol], TCP/IP, andNetscape FastTrack Server).

Exam Cram: NetWare 4.11 to NetWare 5Update also gives thorough coverage to ConsoleOne, along with theother Java capabilities of NetWare 5. Zero Effort Networks(Z.E.N. works) gets a lot of attention in NetWare 4.11 to NetWare 5Update. The authors explain in sufficient depth how to set up thevarious versions of Z.E.N. works and use them to manage applicationsacross a network with a minimum of trouble. --David Wall ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful book.....worked for me.
Another strong book in the exam cram series. Remember that the only purpose of these books is to assist you in passing the tests, and this book works well in that area. I don't think you can pass the test based only on this book though. I used it in conjunction with two other books and some practice tests. Passed the test first try.

As usual the information in the Exam Cram is useful and well organized. The Cram Sheet at the beginning is to the point. That is what you need to learn. If you don't know it, find the information in the book. The book is well worth the cost, and is quite useful in helping you keep your certification. The only real drawback to the Exam Cram series is that once you have passed the test the books are pretty much worthless. They really aren't good volumes to keep for reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most economical way to continue as CNE
This is the one book that you could count on in getting your CNE update. I read this book page to page, follow the exercise through and read the suppliment material from Novell website to pass the CNE test with only 1month preparation. I will recommend this to anyone who is looking intoupdate his CNE. It's the most economical way !

4-0 out of 5 stars Alot of info - to the point
Grein/Brown's book provides good study guide material, is to the point, but is not very good as a hands-on tutorial. I started with this book, but didn't feel ready. Played with the software, purchased a software self testand Clarke's book (liked the tutorial layout, but not the writing style orlength).

Should be read more than once. Wouldn't suggest using this bookas your only resource. Play with the software and get a good self test.

Iused this book, Clarke's Update to Netware 5 Study Guide (see review), SelfTest Software (Big Red testing software), one week of study, and installedand played with all the software (Server, CMD, DHCP/DNS, Fasttrack, NDPS,NSS, ZENWorks). Passed the exam on my first try.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Review Material
I found the book good, but not all I was hoping for. As with some other readers I found myself verifying information from Novell rather than relying on the facts contained within this book.

The examples in thebook are great and dictate by "do step A..B..C."The exampleswork well when setting up a NetWare 5 server in the lab, but fall short inreal life or when anything other than defaults are used especially when itcomes to DNS and ZEN.

When I was expecting examples I got useless drivel, when I wanted discussion I got technically perfect examples.

Thank God Iam not relying on only this book to pass the exam! And, you shouldn'teither.

Most everything in this book you can get from the Novell websiteand save you the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Except for a Few Problems.
I used this book because of the success I had with another Exam Cram publication, NDS Design & Implementation.I thought I was very well prepared for the 4-5 Update Exam that I took today. However, I believethere are some inaccuracies in this book that left me quite puzzled.Forinstance, in server requirements for Zenworks, why do they give 205 MB HDspace and 70 MB memory in the book when Novell itself states 175 MB and 40MB, respectively? Also, it would be nice if the authors discussedCompatibility Mode in greater detail so the reader could have somethingelse to fall back on besides the Supplemental Notes provided by Novell'sWebsite.Be sure to read this book if you have to take the 50-638, butdon't rely on it exclusively. ...
