From the supplier: CNA Insurance Cos has announced that it will not cover policy exclusionary losses, resultant from the Apr 13, 1992, Chicago River flood, and has rejected the Illinois Department of Insurance's request for payment of all claims. CNA Insurance CEO Edward Noha defended the company decision as protection against liability for claims from damages that may still occur in the future. CNA has already paid $2 million for 32 claims and has 63 unsettled claims. Three other insurance companies have also refused to pay all claims.

From the supplier: The merger of CNA Financial Corp with Continental Corp likely will result in the layoff of between 3,000 and 6,000 employees. The combined workforce of the two companies numbers approximately 21,000 employees, and the redundancies would trim the workforce of the merged insurer to between 15,000 and 18,000 employees. The cutbacks would reduce the duplication of personnel and boost efficiency and will primarily be accomplished through attrition.

From the supplier: CNA Insurance Cos' denial of coverage on business and property losses resulting from the Apr 13, 1992, Chicago River flood protects other insurance companies from court action in future unrelated loss cases. Illinois Insurance Director Stephen Selcke requested that CNA forego its policy exclusions and cover damages for which Chicago, IL, has admitted liability. Although Selcke promised that if CNA paid the claims it would not waive its exclusion rights in other cases, the promise would not be binding in court.

From the supplier: Moody's Investors Service's April 1995 report found that inadequate returns on investor capital and excess insurance capacity were spurring company consolidations, including the CNA-Continental merger. The CNA-Continental merger is the largest since the 1970s and unlike many others actually involves the integration of the two operations into a single entity. Challenges to such mergers have included technical difficulties in merging computer systems and the fact that foreign buyers had more incentive than US buyers because of favorable exchange rates.
